Chauffeur service in Belfast and both of its airports

Belfast has two airports and they are nowhere near each other. Getting that one detail right is worth more than any amount of clever routing.

Chauffeur service in Belfast — summary

Kerb space in Belfast is finite, and most of what makes a collection here go smoothly happens before you open the door. The car is in position early, parked where it is legal to stand near Queen’s University, and one message tells you where. From there Belfast City is an indicative 15-25 minutes and about 4 miles, usually by M2 with A12 Westlink as the alternative. We also cover station work at Titanic Quarter, hourly hire across County Antrim and long-distance runs out of Belfast. Every vehicle class on this page is quoted individually, and the written quotation confirms the final price for the run out of Belfast.

01First things about Belfast

Chauffeur service in Belfast

George Best Belfast City sits at Sydenham on the harbour side, four miles from the City Hall and reachable in a quarter of an hour. Belfast International is at Aldergrove, eighteen miles out past the top of the M2. Passengers say Belfast and mean one or the other, and we always confirm which before a booking is fixed.

The city itself is compact and easy to drive once you know the Westlink, the dual carriageway that carries traffic between the M1 and the M2 through the middle. Around it the centre has a good deal of bus priority and pedestrianisation, and the roads out to the university quarter and the Titanic Quarter each have their own character.

03The area

What Belfast is like to drive

The parts of Belfast that decide a pick-up, listed without flattery.

A river, a motorway through the middle and hills on three sides. The Westlink is the spine, sunk below street level for much of its length and joining the M1 to the M2 without touching the centre. The core around Donegall Place and Royal Avenue is heavily pedestrianised with bus lanes on the approaches. South Belfast around Queen’s and the Malone Road is leafy Victorian terrace with permit parking. The Titanic Quarter east of the river is new, wide and easy.

04Demand

The work that comes out of Belfast

The regular work out of the BT1 district.

Airport work in both directions dominates, split between the two fields and needing different timings for each. Conferences at ICC Belfast and events at the SSE Arena generate concentrated movement. The Royal Victoria and the Belfast City Hospital serve wide catchments. There is also a steady flow of cross-border work down the A1 to Dublin, which is common enough here to be routine rather than exceptional.

05Road time

Belfast to Belfast City, by the clock

Counting backwards from check-in at Belfast City to a door in Belfast.

The Westlink congests from half seven to half nine and again from four, with the Broadway roundabout and the York Street interchange the two places it goes wrong. The M2 northbound in the evening is the run to allow for if you are heading to Aldergrove. Event nights at the SSE Arena fill the Queen’s Island roads. Bank holidays and the July period change traffic patterns across the city, and parade routes close roads at short notice.

06The kerb

Waiting in Belfast without blocking it

Handover notes for Belfast, written by people who have stood there.

Belfast Grand Central has a proper transport interchange with set-down areas, which is a considerable improvement on what was there before. Lanyon Place has its own approach off East Bridge Street. The pedestrianised core cannot be driven, so city centre collections happen on the ring of streets or from a car park. Hotels along the Dublin Road and in the Titanic Quarter have their own frontages. The Royal Victoria is a large site needing a building name.

Collection notes for Belfast

  • 01We confirm which airport you mean before the booking is fixed: City at Sydenham is four miles out, International at Aldergrove is eighteen.
  • 02Belfast Grand Central has proper set-down areas at the interchange, and Lanyon Place has its own approach off East Bridge Street.
  • 03The pedestrianised centre around Donegall Place cannot be driven, so we meet on the surrounding streets or at a car park.
  • 04Parade routes and event closures can shut roads at short notice, so we agree an alternative meeting point in advance where it matters.
  • 05The Royal Victoria is a large hospital site; a building name saves a long walk between entrances.

07Included as standard

Standard on every journey out of Belfast

  • 01

We watch the aircraft into Belfast City

If the aircraft holds over the airfield for half an hour, the chauffeur stays put and the drive into Belfast starts later. Nothing on the written Belfast quotation moves because of it.

  • 02

What the boot takes on a Belfast City run

Luggage is sized at the quotation stage, before a car is allocated to Belfast. Skis, golf bags and flight cases all change the vehicle, and it is cheaper to know that in advance than to discover it on M2.

  • 03

    Holding the car in Belfast

Hourly bookings hold the car in Belfast for the whole period. It waits near Queen’s University between appointments with your coat and your papers still in it, which is the point of taking a chauffeur rather than a taxi.

  • 04

A chauffeur who knows the Belfast kerb

Punctuality in Belfast means being in position before the booked time rather than at it. The chauffeur is standing on the street in Belfast with the engine off while you are still finding your passport.

  • 05

    Belfast City arrivals, in person

Groups are met the same way, with one chauffeur per car and a single point to gather at inside Belfast City before the run into Belfast. Four people and eight cases across two saloons into Belfast is usually calmer than everyone waiting at Belfast City for one large vehicle.

  • 06

What sits inside the Belfast quotation

A price you have to ask for is only a price that moves if the answer changes with who is asking. It does not here: the same Belfast journey is quoted the same way for everybody, and the written quotation adds the specifics of your own run.

08Terminals

The airports Belfast uses

The figures are the ones we plan our own cars around in Belfast. They are not padded to look impressive, and not trimmed to make Belfast City look closer to Belfast than it is. On a wet Monday out of Belfast, the higher end of each range is the honest one.

Between appointments the chauffeur finds somewhere legal to sit in Belfast and stays reachable. In Belfast that is sometimes directly outside and sometimes a street away on A12 Westlink, and either way you are told which.

Overruns on a Belfast day are charged at the published hourly rate and confirmed in writing afterwards. Nothing is added at the roadside in Belfast and nothing turns up later that you have not already seen.

We ask for a mobile number for one reason: so the chauffeur can say exactly where in Belfast the car is without you having to guess. In Belfast that single message is often the difference between leaving on time and not.

The whole collection should take about ninety seconds from the door in Belfast to a moving car. That is the figure a Belfast pick-up is built around, and everything above exists to protect it.

  • Collections from ICC Belfast arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
  • The car holds on A12 Westlink when the kerb outside your door will not take it
  • Cases carried from the door in Belfast rather than watched
  • Chauffeur briefed on the Belfast address before the car sets off
The morning run out of Belfast

LF-03The morning run out of Belfast

The morning run out of Belfast

Before a flight the useful question is not how long the drive out of Belfast takes but when you need to be at the Belfast City desk. From Belfast we count 15-25 minutes of road, then the walk from the drop-off, then the queue, and set the pick-up early enough that none of it is close.

The car stops at the Belfast City terminal your airline uses, not the first one signposted off M2. Cases come out, the chauffeur checks you have everything, and that is the end of the Belfast ground half until you land somewhere else.

The forty minutes before you reach Belfast City

LF-04The forty minutes before you reach Belfast City

The forty minutes before you reach Belfast City

Landing at Belfast City after a long flight, with Belfast still to come, is the point at which most ground arrangements fall over. A Belfast return is built for it. The chauffeur is inside arrivals, the car is close, and the drive back into Belfast starts within a few minutes of you clearing customs.

Once the cases are in, the return into Belfast is deliberately dull. If you want to sleep between Belfast City and Belfast, sleep. If you want the fastest way to Queen’s University rather than the shortest, say so and it happens.

  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Belfast
  • The same chauffeur who drove you out of Belfast
  • Board held at Belfast City until you are standing in front of it, Belfast bound

Stations like Titanic Quarter are not designed around stationary cars. The ranks are enforced, the drop-off is timed, and the Titanic Quarter entrance the signs point at is rarely the one where a chauffeur can legally wait for you.

If the train into Titanic Quarter is cancelled entirely, the car can meet you wherever you end up instead. That flexibility is easier to arrange in advance than at the moment it is needed, so mention it when you book the Belfast leg.

Most of the time the right answer for Belfast is one class below where people start looking. That is worth knowing before you read the card for a run off M2.

The classes below are the ones sent to Belfast, and each is quoted on the journey rather than read off a table. The written quotation for a Belfast booking names the vehicle and the price together.

Quoting a journey out of Belfast

We would rather have too much detail about the Belfast collection than too little. If the collection in Belfast is awkward — a gated entrance, a narrow turning off M2, a building with two doors — say so, and the chauffeur is briefed before the day.

Once the Belfast booking is confirmed you get the chauffeur's name, the vehicle and the registration before the day. On the morning itself you get one message when the car is in position on M2 or wherever it can legally stand.

17Answers

Belfast chauffeur questions

What people ask before booking a car in Belfast, and the honest answers.

Which Belfast airport will you take me to?

The one on your booking, and we ask rather than assume. George Best Belfast City is at Sydenham, four miles from the City Hall and typically fifteen to twenty-five minutes. Belfast International is at Aldergrove, eighteen miles out past the top of the M2, usually thirty to forty-five. Turning up at the wrong one is an hour you will not get back.

Do you drive from Belfast to Dublin?

Regularly. It is around a hundred miles down the A1 and then the M1 on the southern side, and generally two to two and a half hours. The road is dual carriageway for almost the whole way with a straightforward border crossing. Dublin Airport sits on the northern edge of the city, which makes it a little closer than the centre.

How does the Westlink affect a journey across Belfast?

It is the fastest way between the M1 and the M2 and the slowest thing in the city when it backs up. The Broadway roundabout at the southern end and the York Street interchange at the northern end are where it fails, both in the morning and again from four. We watch it before setting out and use the surface routes when it is not moving.

Can you collect after an event at the SSE Arena?

Yes, and we position the car before the show ends rather than joining the queue afterwards. The roads around Queen’s Island fill quickly as an arena empties and the bridges back into the city take a while to clear. We agree a specific meeting point away from the main exit so you are walking to the car rather than looking for it.
