Chauffeur service in Carrickfergus and the lough shore

Carrickfergus has a Norman castle sitting directly on the water, a marina beside it and four railway stations in a town of its size, which is generous by any standard.

Chauffeur service in Carrickfergus — summary

Trains do the middle of a lot of Carrickfergus journeys and a car does the ends. We collect at Carrickfergus and Downshire on the side of the station where a car can legally stand, watch the service the way we watch a flight, and carry the bags from the barrier. The same standard applies to Belfast City, an indicative 25-40 minutes from Carrickfergus over roughly 13 miles, where the chauffeur meets you inside the hall. Hourly hire, airport transfers and long-distance driving are all booked from Carrickfergus on the same terms. Nothing on this page carries a figure; the written quotation confirms what your own Carrickfergus journey costs.

01Carrickfergus, to begin with

Chauffeur service in Carrickfergus

The town runs along the northern shore of Belfast Lough with the A2 threading through it and the railway following the same line. Four stops serve the town and its edges, which makes rail a genuine option here and means a good share of our work is meeting trains rather than planes.

Belfast is eleven miles down the shore road or the M5, so the city and the City Airport are both easy runs. Belfast International is further round at about twenty-two miles. The castle and the marina occupy the centre of the seafront and the town wraps around them.

03The area

Carrickfergus on the ground

What A8 and the roads around it do to a timetable.

A long shore town with the water on one side and rising ground on the other. The seafront around the castle and the marina is open with proper parking, which makes it one of the more comfortable places on this lough for a car. The older streets behind, around High Street and West Street, are narrow with short-stay bays. Residential development spreads uphill and out along the coast towards Whitehead, where the roads narrow again.

04Demand

The work that comes out of Carrickfergus

The regular work out of the BT38 district.

Commuters into Belfast make up much of it, and airport work follows from that. The marina brings sailing visitors and events. The castle draws tourists throughout the season. And there is regular movement along the shore towards Larne for the ferry, which is fifteen miles further north and a common enough destination to be part of the routine here.

05Road time

When Carrickfergus moves and when it stops

When A8 works, when it does not, and how far ahead we build in.

The A2 and the M5 into Belfast queue from half seven and again from four, with the section approaching the M2 the slowest part. Locally the seafront fills on summer weekends and during marina events. School traffic affects the roads uphill from the shore. Nothing here is severe, and the town is one of the more predictable places to work in this part of the country.

06The kerb

Doors, boots and the Carrickfergus pavement

Loading, waiting and the handover, in Carrickfergus terms.

All four stations have small forecourts or a workable kerb, and Carrickfergus itself is the most convenient for the centre. The seafront and marina car parks are the best waiting places. The older streets behind the front have short-stay bays and limited width. Residential streets uphill generally have room to wait at a door. Whitehead, further along the coast, is tight and we agree a meeting point there.

Collection notes for Carrickfergus

  • 01Four stations serve the town on the Larne line, so tell us which one you are arriving at rather than just the town name.
  • 02Belfast City is about thirteen miles down the shore and International around twenty-two, so we confirm which you need.
  • 03The seafront and marina car parks are the easiest waiting places, and they stay usable out of season.
  • 04Larne Harbour is fifteen miles further north on the A2, which makes ferry connections a short run from here.
  • 05Whitehead, along the coast, has narrow streets and we agree a meeting point rather than a house frontage.

    What the Carrickfergus price includes

Tell us the shape of a job around St Nicholas’ Church and the figure comes back before you commit to anything. The written quotation for a Carrickfergus booking confirms the final figure and what sits inside it.

  • 02

The welcome on the Belfast City concourse

We watch the flight from the tail number, so the chauffeur is standing in Belfast City arrivals when you clear customs rather than circling on the way in from Carrickfergus. Waiting time from touchdown is built into the Carrickfergus transfer.

  • 03

Tracked from the tail number into Belfast City

A delay at Belfast City is our problem to solve. We move the chauffeur's start time in Carrickfergus, hold the car, and the price on your written quotation does not move because the airline's did.

  • 04

    Luggage, properly handled in Carrickfergus

The chauffeur lifts and loads at the Carrickfergus kerb. In the rain on A8 with a laptop bag under one arm, that is worth more than most of the things chauffeur companies get compared on.

  • 05

Knows which end of A8 to avoid

Every chauffeur working Carrickfergus is licensed for private hire and drives one of our own vehicles. Beyond that, what matters here is that they know Carrickfergus: the turnings, the loading bays and the two minutes it takes to walk from The Gasworks.

  • 06

One car, one price, two Carrickfergus addresses

Where the day has no fixed shape, book the car from the first address in Carrickfergus and release it when you have finished. Everything between that and St Nicholas’ Church can be decided as it happens.

The outbound run to Belfast City

The outbound run to Belfast City

A pre-dawn departure out of Carrickfergus is easier to plan than a nine o'clock one. A8 is empty, the drive sits close to its lower bound, and the only variable left is how long you take to reach the car.

Where somebody is staying behind, the car carries on afterwards: back into Carrickfergus, on to Newtownabbey, or held for a later collection. It remains one Carrickfergus booking and one price either way.

The fleet against a Carrickfergus journey

Most of the time the right answer for Carrickfergus is one class below where people start looking. That is worth knowing before you read the card for a run off A8.

If you are undecided, describe the journey: passengers, cases, where it starts in Carrickfergus and where it ends. We will recommend a class for Carrickfergus, and the recommendation is usually cheaper than the one people expect.

How a collection from Carrickfergus actually runs

LF-03How a collection from Carrickfergus actually runs

How a collection from Carrickfergus actually runs

The chauffeur reaches Carrickfergus with a margin, parks, and then does nothing at all. That waiting on a Carrickfergus street is deliberate. It is what turns a time printed on a confirmation into a car genuinely standing in Carrickfergus when the door opens.

Leaving Carrickfergus carries most of the variables. Once the car is past A8 the rest of the run is arithmetic, and the arithmetic was done before your collection time was set.

  • A second collection in Larne priced into the same booking

Private arrivals into Belfast City compress all of this before A8. At Belfast City the car meets you at the handling agent, the bags go from the aircraft to the boot, and the drive into Carrickfergus starts within a couple of minutes.

A stop on the way in is easy to arrange: someone dropped in Larne, a detour past Loughshore Park, or a supermarket before you reach an empty fridge. Put it on the Carrickfergus booking and it appears in the price.

Where the itinerary is rail then road into Carrickfergus, we track the train the same way we track a flight. A twenty-minute delay into Carrickfergus moves the chauffeur's arrival, not your booking.

For a journey into Carrickfergus where rail covers the distance and the car covers the ends, book both legs at once. The quotation then names the collection at Carrickfergus and the run into Carrickfergus as a single price.

Hourly hire around Carrickfergus

LF-06Hourly hire around Carrickfergus

Hourly hire around Carrickfergus

Visiting Carrickfergus for a day from elsewhere is the classic case: train into Carrickfergus, car waiting on the right side of the station, four hours of moving about, then back to the platform with a margin.

Long Carrickfergus days are quoted with the chauffeur's own hours in mind, and where a day runs from dawn to midnight we will say plainly whether that is one chauffeur or two.

How to book a chauffeur in Carrickfergus

LF-07How to book a chauffeur in Carrickfergus

How to book a chauffeur in Carrickfergus

We would rather have too much detail about the Carrickfergus collection than too little. If the collection in Carrickfergus is awkward — a gated entrance, a narrow turning off A8, a building with two doors — say so, and the chauffeur is briefed before the day.

Very early and very late Carrickfergus bookings go through the same process with more margin built in. A car leaving Carrickfergus before dawn is confirmed in writing exactly like one leaving at noon.

17Answers

Carrickfergus chauffeur questions

Everything below applies to Carrickfergus and to the addresses immediately around it.

Which Carrickfergus station should my chauffeur meet me at?

Whichever you are alighting at, and it is worth saying. The town has four stops on the Larne line — Carrickfergus, Downshire, Clipperstown and Trooperslane — spread along a couple of miles of shore. Carrickfergus is the one closest to the castle and the centre. Guessing here means a car in the right town and the wrong place.

How long is the drive from Carrickfergus to Larne Harbour?

About fifteen miles north on the A2 coast road and typically twenty-five to forty minutes. It is a straightforward run with the lough on one side for much of it. For a sailing we work backwards from the check-in deadline rather than the departure time, since ferries close their gates and do not reopen them.

Is the castle area a workable place for a car to wait?

It is one of the better ones on this coast. There is proper parking along the seafront and around the marina, with room to stand without obstructing anything, and it stays usable outside the summer weekends. On a busy marina event day we would move a little along the front rather than sit in the middle of it.

Do you cover the commuter run into Belfast from here?

Regularly, and the choice of route matters. The M5 is quicker when it is flowing and the A2 shore road is the fallback when it is not. Eleven miles takes twenty-five minutes at nine at night and closer to fifty at half eight in the morning, so for a fixed appointment we leave earlier rather than optimistically.
