Hourly chauffeur hire, as directed: summary

Hourly chauffeur hire from First Class Chauffeurs holds one car and one chauffeur for a block of time rather than for a single journey, so the route can change as often as the day does. Bookings start at a minimum block and run to a full day or longer, in anything from a Mercedes E-Class up to the Signature class. Between stops the chauffeur stays within a few minutes of the door, keeps luggage and coats in the car, and returns on a message rather than on a schedule. Coverage is London and the rest of the United Kingdom, reservations are answered around the clock, and the price is confirmed in writing before the block begins.

01Overview

What this covers

Hourly hire is the booking people make when the day has more than one address in it. The chauffeur arrives at the start time, stays for the block you reserved, and drives whatever the hours turn out to need. Nothing is priced by the mile. The clock is the unit, which means the plan can change six times without a single conversation about money.

Most as-directed work runs between four and ten hours: a morning of viewings, an afternoon across three postcodes, an evening that finishes at a hotel. The written quotation confirms the block, the vehicle, the minimum that applies and how any hours beyond it are handled.

03Included as standard

What hourly hire includes

  • 01

    One named chauffeur

The same person from the first pickup to the last drop. No handover mid-block, no second car sent because the first was reassigned.

  • 02

    Waiting inside the hours

Time spent parked outside a meeting is time you already booked. Nothing is added for standing still.

  • 03

    Route changes at no notice

Give the next address to the chauffeur in the car. There is no re-quote and no call to an office.

  • 04

    Doors, bags and the kerb

Cases into the boot, doors opened on the pavement side, and a hand with anything awkward on the way in.

  • 05

    Parking and city charges

Your chauffeur deals with bays, tolls and clean-air charges as they arise. The quotation states which of them sit inside the hourly figure.

  • 06

Water and charging in the cabin

Chilled still water, Lightning and USB-C leads, and a cabin already at the temperature you asked for.

04Who books it

Who asks for this

Four kinds of enquiry arrive for this work, and each wants something slightly different from it.
  • 01

    Buyers on a viewing day

Six properties, four agents and a schedule that slips from the second appointment onward. The car carries the paperwork and absorbs the slippage.

  • 02

    Visitors without a car

People in the country for two days with a diary full of addresses they have never been to and no wish to learn the parking rules.

  • 03

    Production and press days

Crews, contributors and talent moving between locations on a call sheet that changes hourly.

  • 04

Families running a long errand day

A hospital appointment, a school pickup and a supermarket run stitched into one block rather than three separate fares.

05How it works

From the first message to the last mile

The same sequence every time, so nobody is left guessing what happens next.
  1. Step 01

Tell us the block, not the route

Start time, rough finish, number of passengers, first address. The rest of the day can stay undecided.

  2. Step 02

We quote the hours and the car

A written figure for the block, the vehicle it applies to and the minimum it carries. Nothing is estimated per mile.

  3. Step 03

    The brief the evening before

You receive the chauffeur name, the registration and a direct number. Anything you already know about the day goes on the job sheet.

  4. Step 04

    The chauffeur holds the day

Car at the door for the start time, then within a few minutes of you for the rest of the block.

  5. Step 05

    Extra hours settled afterwards

If the day runs long, the additional time is billed at the same hourly figure after the event rather than negotiated at the kerb.

What "as directed" actually means

LF-01What "as directed" actually means

What "as directed" actually means

As directed is the trade term for a booking where the passenger sets the route on the day. You reserve the chauffeur and the car for a block of hours, and where they go inside that block is entirely yours to decide. There is no destination on the job sheet, no mileage band, and no conversation about a supplement when the third stop turns into the fifth.

The practical difference shows up when a meeting finishes early. On a point-to-point booking, an early finish means standing on a pavement waiting for a car that was told four o'clock. On an as-directed booking the car is already there, because it never went anywhere else. That single fact is why most clients move to hourly hire once their days stop being predictable.

One limit deserves stating plainly. Hourly hire is priced on time, so a day that spends most of its hours covering distance is usually better quoted as a long-distance job. If the plan is Manchester and back, say so at the enquiry and the price will be built that way instead.

Working the ground segment

How the clock is counted

LF-02How the clock is counted

How the clock is counted

The block starts at the time you asked the car for, not at the moment you come downstairs. Book ten o'clock and appear at twenty past, and the clock still began at ten; the chauffeur was outside from around a quarter to. It runs until the last passenger is dropped, and part hours are rounded to the whole hour above.

Overruns happen on perhaps half of all day bookings and we do not treat them as a fault. A four-hour block that becomes five is charged at the same hourly figure and added afterwards. What helps is a message the moment you know. A chauffeur who discovers at five fifty-five that a six o'clock finish has become eight has already made plans for the evening.

Positioning sits outside the block. Getting the car to your first address, and getting it home afterwards, is our time rather than yours, unless the start or finish is a long way from base and the quotation says otherwise.

What to expect

Where the car waits while you are inside

LF-03Where the car waits while you are inside

Where the car waits while you are inside

This is the part of hourly hire nobody asks about and everybody notices. In central London the honest answer is that the car rarely waits directly outside. Red routes, loading bays and residents' parking make a stationary car impossible on most streets for more than a few minutes, so the chauffeur finds somewhere legal within a short drive and comes back when you call.

What we promise is a short wait rather than a scramble. Your chauffeur will name the holding spot before you walk in and will be at the door within roughly five minutes of a message. A two-hour stop goes to a car park and the ticket comes with the job. A twenty-minute stop is usually handled by circling.

Outside the cities the whole problem softens. Country hotels, business parks and racecourses have space, and the car simply sits where you left it with the chauffeur in it, which is why a rural day of the same length feels calmer than a central London one.

Behind the booking

LF-04The four-hour minimum, and why it exists

The four-hour minimum, and why it exists

Every as-directed booking begins at four hours. The reason is arithmetic rather than policy. A chauffeur who takes a two-hour job in the middle of the day has effectively lost the day, because once positioning at both ends is counted nothing else fits either side of it.

Four cars carry a six-hour minimum instead of four. The Land Rover Defender 110, the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the Cullinan and the luxury Sprinter are all reserved in six-hour blocks, which is worth knowing before an afternoon gets planned around one of them.

If the day genuinely is one journey, a fixed transfer price is cheaper and we will say so at the enquiry rather than sell you hours you do not need. Hourly hire starts earning its keep somewhere around the third stop.

11Detail

On the day

Changing the plan mid-booking

LF-05Changing the plan mid-booking

Changing the plan mid-booking

Plans move on the day more often than not, and an as-directed booking is built to absorb it. Give the chauffeur the new address in the car and it simply becomes the next address. Nobody rings an office, nothing is re-quoted, and the afternoon is allowed to go somewhere the morning did not expect.

Two kinds of change do need a word with the office rather than the driver. The first is a large jump in distance, an afternoon that was Kensington to Chelsea becoming Kensington to Oxford. The second is running past the end of a block into hours the same car is already promised to. Both are usually solvable, and both are far easier at two o'clock than at six.

Unusual destinations are worth flagging when you book rather than on the approach road. Private airfields, bonded warehouses, film unit bases and secure sites all keep access lists, and those lists close earlier in the day than most people expect.

Practical notes

Luggage, coats and the things left in the car

LF-06Luggage, coats and the things left in the car

Luggage, coats and the things left in the car

On a long block the boot quietly becomes a cloakroom. Coats, a gym bag, the suit carrier for the evening, the shopping picked up at the third stop: all of it lives in the car and none of it has to be carried between appointments. An E-Class takes two large cases or the equivalent. A V-Class takes considerably more, which is why it gets booked for days with kit in them.

Things get left behind, and it is safer to assume they will be. Cars are checked between jobs and anything found is logged and held. A phone that goes down the side of a seat at eleven in the morning is usually back with its owner the same afternoon, as long as we know which car it was in.

Valuables are the exception to all of that. A car parked in a public bay is a car in a public bay, so passports, laptops and jewellery are better travelling with you than sitting in a boot for two hours in a multi-storey.

Before you confirm

Evening hire and the late finish

LF-07Evening hire and the late finish

Evening hire and the late finish

Evening blocks behave differently from daytime ones. Traffic thins after eight, but the kerb gets harder: restaurant frontages fill with waiting cars, theatre streets close to traffic, and a hotel forecourt at eleven is a queue rather than a space. Your chauffeur will usually name a pickup point a few doors along and hold there instead of joining the crush.

Late finishes are worth booking generously. Reserving until midnight and stopping at eleven costs an hour you did not use. Reserving until eleven and stopping at half past midnight means a chauffeur who started at eight in the morning driving at an hour when they should have finished. Holding the later time and releasing it is the better trade.

Overnight work runs as normal work. Reservations are answered around the clock, and a two o'clock finish is a booking rather than a favour.

Choosing the car for a day of short hops

LF-08Choosing the car for a day of short hops

Choosing the car for a day of short hops

For a day built from ten-minute legs, the best car is not always the biggest one. A Mercedes E-Class fits into kerb space an S-Class cannot, and on a day spent in the side streets of Marylebone that matters rather more than rear legroom you occupy six minutes at a time.

Where the day contains one long leg, a run to a plant in the Midlands or an hour each way to a client, the larger saloons repay the difference. The S-Class and the BMW i7 sit in the same class and are quoted the same way, and the i7 is the quieter of the two once you are on a motorway.

Groups change the answer completely. Four adults with bags belong in a V-Class rather than in two saloons, and six or more belong in the luxury Sprinter, which is reserved on a longer minimum block.

18Answers

Questions about hourly hire

Six answers that come up on almost every enquiry of this kind.

What does "as directed" mean on a chauffeur booking?

It means the car and chauffeur are reserved for a block of time rather than for a stated destination. You decide where to go as the day unfolds, and the route can change as many times as you like without altering the price of the block.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

Four hours on most vehicles. The Land Rover Defender 110, Rolls-Royce Phantom, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and the luxury Sprinter carry a six-hour minimum instead, because those cars are rarely released for short work.

Does waiting time cost extra?

No. Time parked outside your meeting is time already inside the block you booked, so a two-hour appointment in the middle of a six-hour hire costs exactly what the six hours cost.

What happens if we run over the hours we booked?

Additional time is charged at the same hourly figure and added after the event rather than settled at the kerb. A message as soon as you know helps, because the chauffeur may need to release a later commitment.

Can the car stay with us all day, or does it go away between stops?

It stays with the booking. In central London it may hold in a nearby bay or car park rather than directly outside, because most kerbs there will not tolerate a parked car, but it returns to the door within a few minutes of your call.

Are parking and congestion charges included in the hourly rate?

Your chauffeur handles them on the day so you never deal with a machine or an app. Which of those costs sit inside the hourly figure and which appear separately is set out in your written quotation before the booking starts.
