Range Rover Autobiography — summary

Range Rover Autobiography chauffeur hire from First Class Chauffeurs. A high, quiet cabin that you step across into rather than drop down into. The SUV booked for the person in the back rather than the road ahead. It seats up to 4 passengers with 4 large cases and sits in the First SUV class of this fleet. As-directed hire is booked in a block of hours with the car held for you between stops; airport transfers are quoted as a single fixed fare for the run. No standing price list. Send the journey on WhatsApp and the written quotation confirms the price, what it includes and any applicable tax. Booked across the United Kingdom, with airport arrivals met inside the terminal rather than telephoned from a car park.

01First SUV

The Range Rover, plainly described

The Autobiography is the top of the Range Rover range and it behaves less like a 4x4 than anything else that shape. The cabin is close to silent at speed, the air suspension takes the edge off surfaces that would register in a saloon, and the seat height means getting in and out is a step rather than a manoeuvre. That last point brings us more bookings than any other.

It sits between the First Saloon class and the Suite class, and the fair way to describe it is as an S-Class that you sit high in, with a better boot and a slightly worse turning circle.

The rear of an Autobiography

LF-01The rear of an Autobiography

The rear of an Autobiography

The rear seats recline further than most people expect from a car this shape, and on the long-wheelbase body there is enough space behind the front seats for a tall passenger to stretch out properly. Heating and ventilation are set from the rear armrest, and the cabin holds an even temperature whatever the weather has been doing outside.

Visibility is the thing passengers mention first. The window line sits low relative to the seat, so you look out over hedges and traffic rather than at the flank of a van in the next lane, and on a country road that changes the character of the whole journey. Children stop asking how much longer, which is not something we can put a figure on and is nonetheless the most reliable effect of the seat height.

It is also the quietest place to sit in this fleet outside the Suite class. Double glazing on the side glass and a great deal of sound deadening mean a conversation at normal volume works at seventy, which is not true of any other high-sided vehicle here.

LF-02What the Range Rover is genuinely better at

What the Range Rover is genuinely better at

Three things, and they are worth separating from the general glow around the badge. It is the easiest vehicle here to get in and out of, because the seat is roughly at hip height for most adults. It takes four large cases without a negotiation. And it is unbothered by weather, whether that is a flooded lane in Somerset or a frosty drive in the Cotswolds.

What it is not is a genuine off-road tool in the way the Defender is. It will handle a gravel drive, a wet field and a farm track without complaint, but nobody is going to enjoy taking a car with this interior across a rutted shoot in February, and there is a better answer on your quotation for that.

It is also large. Five metres and a bit, tall, and wide enough that some multi-storey bays and older mews turns are marginal rather than comfortable. That has to be planned around rather than discovered on a ramp with a queue behind you, so a chauffeur working this car checks the building and the final approach before the day and picks a stopping point that will actually take it.

Standing height at a terminal kerb

LF-03Standing height at a terminal kerb

Standing height at a terminal kerb

At an airport the height works twice. Loading four cases into a Range Rover happens at waist level rather than at a stoop, which is quicker in a lane where you are being watched by a camera. And a passenger stepping out at departures steps down onto the pavement rather than levering themselves up out of a low seat with a bag in one hand.

For arrivals the run is the same as everything else here: the flight is watched from the tail number, the chauffeur is inside the building with a name board, and the car comes round once the party is together. What differs is the walk to the car, which in a high vehicle is a shorter and less awkward transition than most people realise.

It is a common booking for private aviation for the same reason. FBO aprons are open, often wet, and frequently involve moving several bags from an aircraft hold to a vehicle in a hurry, and a tall square load bay makes that a two-minute job.

The passenger who does not want to drop into a saloon

A large number of these bookings are made for someone with a hip, a knee or a back that makes a low seat genuinely painful. Nobody wants to explain that at a kerb, so it usually arrives in an enquiry as a request for a Range Rover without a reason attached, and none is needed.

The second group is the country weekend. Four people, four cases and a house two hours out of London, where the roads at the end are narrow and the drive is gravel. It is a journey that would be perfectly possible in an S-Class and is more pleasant in this.

Third are the arrivals that happen in the rain. A high vehicle stopped under a hotel canopy puts the door aperture at roughly the right height for an umbrella held by somebody standing on the pavement, and the passenger crosses about a metre of wet ground instead of three. Anyone who has climbed out of a low car in a downpour in a good coat understands the difference immediately.

Air suspension, and why the ride changes at speed

LF-05Air suspension, and why the ride changes at speed

Air suspension, and why the ride changes at speed

The car lowers itself as speed builds and raises when it is crawling, so the ride you get at seventy on the M40 is not the one you get in a car park. A chauffeur used to the car anticipates that: the vehicle needs a moment to settle after a sharp change of pace, and driving through that moment is what makes a passenger reach for the grab handle.

The weight is the other thing. Well over two tonnes means everything happens slightly later than the same input in a saloon, so braking starts sooner and corners are entered a shade slower with no correction mid-way. Held properly, the car is remarkably serene; hurried, it wallows.

The turning circle deserves a mention. It is better than the length suggests but it is not a saloon, and a three-point turn in a narrow mews becomes a five-point one. That is a matter of planning the last two hundred metres, which is the part of a route that gets planned separately anyway.

LF-06Where the First SUV class sits against the saloons

Where the First SUV class sits against the saloons

The class holds this car and the Defender. Against the Defender, the Range Rover is quieter, softer and more impressive, and gives away only genuine off-road ability. That comparison is set out plainly on the Defender’s own page, including the pricing wrinkle that makes it the more expensive of the two for a short as-directed day.

Against the saloons, the picture is simpler. The S-Class and the i7 sit a class below this car and both are quieter still on a smooth motorway. What they cannot do is give you a high seat, a fourth passenger with a fourth case, or an untroubled arrival at a house with a gravel drive.

Above it sits the Suite class. That buys a rear compartment built to be sat in rather than a vehicle built to go anywhere, and if your journey is entirely on tarmac it is the more comfortable way to spend the money.

06Capacity

Passengers, cases and the honest limit

Luggage is counted before passengers when a job is priced here, because a vehicle that is one case short at the kerb is a problem nobody can fix at the terminal.

Four cases behind a split tailgate

LF-07Four cases behind a split tailgate

Four cases behind a split tailgate

Four large cases go in behind the second row and the load floor is flat, so nothing has to be balanced on anything else. Two more soft bags go on top without touching the rear glass. With four passengers aboard that is a comfortable rather than a maximum load, which is unusual on this pricing page.

The tailgate splits, and the lower half folds down into a shelf at roughly bench height. In practice that means cases are slid rather than lifted, an elderly passenger has somewhere to sit while a wheel is being looked at, and in the rain the upper half becomes a small roof over whoever is loading.

Long items are the one weakness relative to the Defender. The load bay is shaped rather than square, so a set of skis or a long rod tube usually needs the second row dropped, and at that point you are down to two passengers. If both the people and the long items are non-negotiable, the V-Class is the vehicle to ask about.

07Compared

Range Rover or S-Class

The section most people actually want, written the way we would answer it on the telephone.

The S-Class sits a class below the Range Rover and is quoted accordingly, and on a smooth road it is the quieter and better-riding car of the two. There is no version of this comparison where the Range Rover is better value on pure comfort. What the extra money actually buys is height, weather and a fourth seat with a fourth case. If your passenger struggles to get out of a low car, if the destination has an unsealed drive, if there are four of you with four bags, or if it is January and the last hour of the route is single track, the Range Rover is worth every pound of the difference. If none of those apply and the journey is A4 to Mayfair, book the S-Class. It is the more comfortable car, it parks in more places, and the difference on a Heathrow run is real money that could be spent somewhere more interesting.

13Answers

Questions about the Range Rover

Six things people ask before booking this one, answered without the marketing.

Is a Range Rover easier to get into than a saloon?

For most adults, considerably. The seat sits at around hip height, so getting in is a step across rather than a drop down and getting out does not involve pushing up from a low seat. It is the most common reason this vehicle is asked for by name.

Can a Range Rover reach a country house with an unmade drive?

Yes. Gravel, mud, a wet field and a steep drive are all within its normal range. For a genuinely rough working track or a shoot in bad weather, the Defender is the more appropriate vehicle and is quoted at a lower hourly rate.

How much luggage fits in a Range Rover with four passengers?

Four large cases behind the second row on a flat floor, plus a couple of soft bags on top. Long items such as skis or golf carriers usually need a seat dropped, which takes you to two passengers, so tell us about those in the enquiry.

Will a Range Rover fit into central London car parks?

Most modern ones, yes; some older multi-storeys and hotel undercrofts are marginal on width or height. Your chauffeur checks the building beforehand and, where it does not work, arranges a street-level stop at the entrance itself.

Is the Range Rover quieter than a Mercedes S-Class?

No. The S-Class is the quieter car at motorway speed and has the better ride on a good surface. The Range Rover is the quietest high vehicle here, which is a different claim and the one that matters if you want the seat height.

Does the split tailgate make a practical difference?

It does. The lower half drops to form a shelf, so cases are slid across rather than lifted over a lip, there is somewhere to sit while things are sorted out, and the raised upper half keeps the rain off whoever is loading.
