Rolls-Royce Phantom — summary

Rolls-Royce Phantom chauffeur hire from First Class Chauffeurs. The largest car on this pricing page and the least practical. Booked for the days where arriving is half of what the day is about. It seats up to 3 passengers with 3 large cases and sits in the Signature class of this fleet. As-directed hire is booked in a block of hours with the car held for you between stops; airport transfers are quoted as a single fixed fare for the run. No standing price list. Send the journey on WhatsApp and the written quotation confirms the price, what it includes and any applicable tax. Booked across the United Kingdom, with airport arrivals met inside the terminal rather than telephoned from a car park.

The Phantom, plainly described

The Phantom is a very long, very quiet car built around a rear compartment that is closer to a small room than a back seat. It is the car people picture when they say Rolls-Royce, and almost every booking for one is made because of what happens in the thirty seconds between the car stopping and the passenger reaching the door.

It is the top of this fleet and it is quoted accordingly, with a longer minimum block on as-directed days than anything below it. It is worth saying plainly before you enquire that for a great many bookings the Ghost is the better answer, and a quotation from here will say so.

Stepping out forwards, not sideways

LF-01Stepping out forwards, not sideways

Stepping out forwards, not sideways

The Phantom’s rear doors are hinged at the back, so you step out forwards rather than swinging your legs round, which matters more in a long coat than it sounds. The floor is flat, the aperture is enormous, and the seat is high enough that standing up is a single movement made facing the right direction.

The rear compartment is built to be occupied rather than passed through. The seats are set back from the doors with a great deal of space in front of them, tables fold out of the seat backs, and the whole thing is quiet enough that a normal speaking voice carries across it without effort at any legal speed.

The details do the work. An umbrella lives in each rear door. The headlining can be specified with fibre-optic lighting. The doors close under power from a control beside the seat, so nobody has to reach across and pull a door that weighs what these weigh.

LF-02What a Phantom is not the right car for

What a Phantom is not the right car for

Airport runs with luggage, first of all. Three large cases is the ceiling in a car close to six metres long, which is a worse ratio than anything else here. A family coming home from a fortnight abroad will be better served by a V-Class costing a fifth as much.

Tight city work is the second. It needs room to turn, room to stop and a clear kerb to open the rear doors into, and central London supplies none of those reliably. A day of five meetings across the West End is a poor use of this car and a frustrating one for whoever is driving it.

Third, anything where you would rather not be looked at. A Phantom stops a street. Some bookings want exactly that, and for the ones that do not, the Ghost delivers the same badge and the same silence in a car people glance at rather than stare at.

LF-03Airport work in a Phantom, and when to say no

Airport work in a Phantom, and when to say no

It does happen, and it works in a specific set of circumstances: two passengers, light luggage, and a reason for the car to be a Phantom at the other end. Somebody flying in for a wedding the same afternoon, a guest being collected before an event, a milestone trip where the collection is the beginning of the occasion rather than a transfer.

What does not work is the ordinary version of that journey. A Phantom on a Heathrow run is a great deal of money for forty minutes on the M4, and if the passenger simply wants to be comfortable and quiet, the Maybach does that for less and the S-Class does most of it for a fraction.

When a Phantom is booked for a terminal, the collection is planned rather differently. The car does not use short-stay levels, it uses a designated pick-up point with space to open the coach doors, and the chauffeur meets the party inside the building and walks them out rather than describing where to find it.

LF-04Weddings, and the other days that ask for it

Weddings, and the other days that ask for it

Weddings are what this car does most. The six-hour minimum suits the shape of the day rather than fighting it: a collection, a wait, a short run to the venue, a longer wait, and a departure that everybody is watching. The car is on site for the photographs whether or not anyone plans for it to be.

Two practical points about venues. The Phantom is close to six metres and needs a wide gateway and a real turning area, so a stone arch or a narrow bridge on the approach has to be checked in advance rather than discovered by a driver on the day. And gravel is fine; a rutted farm track to a marquee is not.

Beyond weddings it goes to premieres, awards evenings, significant birthdays and the occasional corporate day where a principal is being moved between three appearances. In all of those the car spends more time stationary than moving, which is exactly what it is best at.

Driving two and a half tonnes gently

LF-05Driving two and a half tonnes gently

Driving two and a half tonnes gently

Everything in a Phantom happens slowly and deliberately, and a chauffeur who hurries it makes the car worse rather than faster. Speed is gathered gradually because the point is that the passenger never notices it arriving, and it is given back even earlier, so the car comes to rest without the final nod that a late brake produces.

The size dictates the route. Long approaches are preferred to short ones, right turns across traffic are avoided where a loop will do, and the last two hundred metres of any journey are worked out before the day rather than improvised. A three-point turn in this car is a five-point turn in most places.

Stopping position is the part that gets rehearsed. The coach doors need clear space ahead of the rear door and a kerb that is not blocked, so the car is placed rather than parked, and a chauffeur will circle a venue once to find the right spot rather than take the first available one.

LF-06Phantom, Cullinan and the Sprinter

Phantom, Cullinan and the Sprinter

The Signature class holds three vehicles quoted the same way, with the same longer minimum block, which is a slightly odd grouping until you look at what they have in common: all three are booked for whole days rather than transfers, and all three need their route planned in advance.

The Cullinan is the same idea as the Phantom in an SUV body. It takes four people rather than three, sits high, and reaches places the Phantom cannot, at the cost of some of the ceremony. If the venue involves a field, a farm drive or a Scottish winter, the Cullinan is the sensible one.

The Sprinter is here because a group of twelve to sixteen needs a single vehicle, and at that size no saloon is a comparison. Where a wedding party wants both, the usual booking is a Phantom for the couple and a Sprinter for everybody else, quoted together.

06Capacity

Passengers, cases and the honest limit

Luggage is counted before passengers when a job is priced here, because a vehicle that is one case short at the kerb is a problem nobody can fix at the terminal.

LF-07Luggage in a Phantom, and the honest number

Luggage in a Phantom, and the honest number

Three large cases, in a car nearly six metres long. The boot is deep but narrow relative to the body, the aperture is the constraint, and there is no configuration that improves it. Two passengers with a case each and a garment bag laid flat is a comfortable load; four bags is not a load this car takes.

For the days a Phantom is actually booked for, that is rarely a problem. Weddings and evenings involve a dress bag and a change of shoes rather than hold luggage, and the car spends the day at a venue rather than at a carousel.

When a booking does involve both a Phantom and real luggage, the answer is two vehicles. A Phantom for the passengers and a V-Class following with the bags is a common arrangement, and it is cheaper than most people expect once the numbers are written down.

07Compared

Phantom or Maybach

The section most people actually want, written the way we would answer it on the telephone.

The Maybach sits a class below the Phantom, carries a shorter minimum block, and is quoted below it on a transfer as well. It carries the same three passengers and the same three cases. On the journey itself it is arguably the better car: the rear seat reclines with a footrest, which the Phantom’s does not, so for two hours of motorway with someone trying to sleep the cheaper car does more. It also fits into places the Phantom struggles with and does not need its stopping position rehearsed. Book the Phantom when the car has to be seen — a wedding, a premiere, a day built around an arrival — because nothing else on this list does that job and the Maybach cannot be dressed up into it. For a private journey where the point is comfort rather than presence, the Maybach is the better value and the better car.

13Answers

Questions about the Phantom

Six things people ask before booking this one, answered without the marketing.

Why does the Phantom have a six-hour minimum?

Because it is almost always booked for a day rather than a journey, and a shorter block does not reflect how it gets used. Single transfers such as an airport run are quoted separately, as a fixed fare for the run.

Will a Rolls-Royce Phantom fit into my wedding venue?

Usually, but the car is close to six metres and needs a wide gateway and a genuine turning area. Send us the venue in your enquiry and the approach, the gateway and the turning space are checked before anything is confirmed rather than on the morning.

Can the Phantom be decorated with ribbons for a wedding?

Yes, and it is arranged as part of the booking rather than left to the day. Tell us the colour when you enquire. Anything that involves adhesive on the paintwork is not something we will do, and there is always a way round it.

How much luggage does a Phantom carry?

Three large cases, which is a poor ratio for a car this size. Where a booking needs a Phantom and real luggage, the usual arrangement is a second vehicle following with the bags, which is quoted alongside and costs less than most people assume.

Is the Phantom or the Ghost the better wedding car?

The Phantom if the car is central to the photographs and the venue can take its size. The Ghost if the driveway is narrow, the gateway is tight, or you want the car present rather than dominant. The Ghost is also quoted a class below.

Can a Phantom be booked for a single short journey?

Yes — a fixed-price transfer such as Heathrow to central London is quoted on the run itself. As-directed hire carries the longer minimum block. For a short private journey where nobody is watching the arrival, we would suggest the Maybach and say why.
