Mercedes-Maybach S-Class — summary

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class chauffeur hire from First Class Chauffeurs. An S-Class stretched where it counts, with two rear seats that recline properly and a footrest that changes what a two-hour journey feels like. It seats up to 3 passengers with 3 large cases and sits in the Suite class of this fleet. As-directed hire is booked in a block of hours with the car held for you between stops; airport transfers are quoted as a single fixed fare for the run. No standing price list. Send the journey on WhatsApp and the written quotation confirms the price, what it includes and any applicable tax. Booked across the United Kingdom, with airport arrivals met inside the terminal rather than telephoned from a car park.

The Maybach, plainly described

The Maybach is the long version of the S-Class, and the extra length goes entirely into the rear compartment. Most are built as four-seat cars with two individual rear seats rather than a bench, and the seat behind the front passenger reclines far enough, with a footrest raised from the seat in front, that a passenger can genuinely sleep on a long leg rather than doze upright.

Against the standard S-Class it is a substantial step in both directions, and it is worth booking for the journeys where the rear compartment is the point rather than the means.

The rear seats a Maybach is built around

LF-01The rear seats a Maybach is built around

The rear seats a Maybach is built around

The reclining seat is the whole argument. Set right back, with the footrest up and the front passenger seat wound forward, a passenger lies at something close to the angle of a business class seat. Two hours in that position is restful in a way no upright seat manages, and it is the reason this car gets booked for the leg home from a long flight.

The two rear seats are separate and generously wide, with a fixed console between them holding controls, cup holders and storage. Some cars carry a refrigerated compartment and folding tables; whether the vehicle on your booking does is confirmed on the quotation rather than promised here.

A third passenger can travel in the front, and that is the honest arrangement. This is a rear compartment for two people, and treating it as a three-seat car misses what it is for. If three of you are travelling together, the standard S-Class is the more sensible car and costs less than half as much.

LF-02Long wheelbase, short list of drawbacks

Long wheelbase, short list of drawbacks

There are three, and they are all consequences of length. It is a little over five and a half metres, so tight mews turns need planning, some hotel forecourts have to be entered rather than swept through, and the rear overhang means kerbs are approached at a shallow angle. None of that affects a passenger; all of it affects how the last two hundred metres are driven.

The second is the boot, which is a saloon boot despite everything ahead of it. Three large cases is the ceiling and the aperture is the limiting factor, so the car takes fewer bags per pound spent than anything else in the Suite class.

The third is that it attracts attention. A Maybach parked outside a restaurant is noticed, and for some bookings that is precisely the point while for others it is exactly what was not wanted. It is a fair question to ask yourself before choosing between this and a plain S-Class.

Terminal work in a car this long

LF-03Terminal work in a car this long

Terminal work in a car this long

The Maybach is a common booking for two specific airport journeys. The first is the overnight arrival, where somebody has crossed several time zones and has an hour of motorway ahead of them before anything is asked of them. Reclined, with the cabin dark and quiet, that hour is genuinely recovered rather than merely endured.

The second is the outbound leg before a long flight, which people underrate. Arriving at a terminal already tired makes the flight worse, and a car that lets you finish waking up slowly is worth more at that end of the trip than at the other.

Practically, the collection runs like every airport booking here: flight watched, chauffeur inside the building with a board, luggage loaded rather than dragged. The length means the car uses a designated pick-up point rather than a tight short-stay bay, which is a routing detail your chauffeur handles rather than something you notice.

LF-04Who books a Maybach, and why

Who books a Maybach, and why

A good share of these bookings are made on behalf of a guest. Somebody is being collected before a conference, a speaker is being brought in from an airport, a client is visiting from abroad and the person arranging it wants the ground half of that trip to be the easy part. The Maybach is a clear signal without anybody having to say anything.

Then there are the long domestic legs. London to Birmingham, London to the south coast, a run across to the Cotswolds on a Friday afternoon: journeys where two hours of reclined seat is worth considerably more than it would be on a twenty-minute hop.

And there are evenings. Dinner, a premiere, an anniversary, a night where the car is part of the plan rather than the transport to it. In that use, the S-Class is entirely adequate and the Maybach is what people actually want, which is a distinction worth being honest about.

Driving five and a half metres through a city

LF-05Driving five and a half metres through a city

Driving five and a half metres through a city

A long car is easy on a motorway and demanding in a city. The rear wheels track well inside the fronts, so a turn into a narrow entrance is taken wider and later than instinct suggests, and a chauffeur who cuts it fine will put a rear wheel on a kerb, which a reclined passenger feels through the whole car.

Speed humps are the other test. Taken square and slow, the air suspension makes them disappear; taken at an angle, the long body pitches and the passenger is reminded that they are travelling. On residential approaches a chauffeur will often take a longer route with fewer of them rather than the direct one.

The last part is the stop. A reclined seat has to be brought upright before the door opens, which takes a few seconds, so the car is stopped a little earlier and more gently than usual to give the passenger time to arrive rather than be arrived.

LF-06Maybach and Ghost, side by side

Maybach and Ghost, side by side

They are quoted identically, they carry the same three passengers and three cases, and they are chosen for entirely different reasons. The Maybach is the better car to lie down in: the reclining seat and footrest have no equivalent in the Ghost, which has a superb rear bench but a fundamentally upright one.

The Ghost is the better car to arrive in and the quieter of the two at low speed. Its rear doors are hinged at the back, so you step out forwards rather than swinging your legs round, and that changes how getting out of a car looks and feels, particularly in a long coat.

The rule of thumb we would offer: for the journey, the Maybach. For the arrival, the Ghost. Where a booking has both a long motorway leg and an occasion at the end of it, most people choose the Ghost and are right to, because two hours in a very good upright seat costs less than they fear and an awkward arrival in front of an audience is remembered for considerably longer.

06Capacity

Passengers, cases and the honest limit

Luggage is counted before passengers when a job is priced here, because a vehicle that is one case short at the kerb is a problem nobody can fix at the terminal.

Three cases, and the boot that limits them

LF-07Three cases, and the boot that limits them

Three cases, and the boot that limits them

Three large cases go in, which is the same as the standard S-Class and less than the Jet Class at a lower rate. The extra length in this car is all in the wheelbase rather than behind the rear axle, so nothing about the Maybach improves the luggage position over the car it is based on.

In practice that suits how it gets used. Two passengers with a case each and hand baggage is the common load, and at that level the boot is comfortable rather than full. It is the third passenger with a third case that takes it to the limit, and a fourth bag does not fit whatever is tried.

If your party genuinely needs more than that, the Jet Class carries five large cases and four passengers and is quoted below this car. Being sold a Maybach for a luggage-heavy trip is the wrong outcome for everybody, and a quotation from here should say so rather than take the larger figure and leave you to discover the problem at the kerb.

07Compared

Maybach or Jet Class

The section most people actually want, written the way we would answer it on the telephone.

The Jet Class is quoted below the Maybach and carries four people and five cases against three and three. For a party of four, or anyone with real luggage, the cheaper vehicle is simply the better one and the Maybach cannot be argued into the job. It is also the better answer for a working journey, because four people with a fixed table between them can do things no saloon allows. Where the Maybach earns the difference is with one or two passengers on a long leg: it is far quieter, it rides in a way a converted van never will, and a reclined rear seat with a footrest is a different proposition from a good upright chair. Two people going a long way, choose the Maybach. Four people, or five cases, choose the Jet Class and spend less.

13Answers

Questions about the Maybach

Six things people ask before booking this one, answered without the marketing.

Do the rear seats in a Maybach really recline?

On the four-seat rear layout, yes. The seat behind the front passenger reclines a long way and a footrest lifts out of the seat in front, so a passenger can lie at close to a business class angle. It is the main reason the car is booked for long legs.

How many people can travel in a Maybach?

Three, with one of them in the front. The rear compartment is designed around two, and treating it as a three-seat car misses the point of the vehicle. For three passengers travelling together the standard S-Class is more sensible and much cheaper.

Does the Maybach carry more luggage than a standard S-Class?

No. The extra length is all in the wheelbase, so the boot is the same and three large cases remains the ceiling. If you need more than that, the Jet Class takes five cases at a lower hourly rate.

Is a Maybach worth it for a short airport transfer?

Honestly, rarely. On a forty-minute run you get no chance to use the reclining seat, and the standard S-Class does the same journey for a fraction of the money. Book the Maybach when the journey is long or the arrival matters.

Does the Maybach have a refrigerator and folding tables?

Those are options on the model rather than fixtures, so we confirm what the allocated vehicle actually carries on your written quotation instead of promising it on a web page. Ask in your enquiry if it matters to the booking.

Will a Maybach fit down a narrow London street?

It will go almost anywhere an S-Class goes, but at over five and a half metres some mews turns need a two-part manoeuvre and a few forecourts are impractical. Your chauffeur plans the final approach separately and picks a workable stop at the door.
