Chauffeur services: summary

First Class Chauffeurs runs chauffeur services across the United Kingdom, organised into five families: airports and terminals, business travel, private and personal hire, occasions, and distance and touring. Every service is driven by a chauffeur who is briefed before the day, in a car from a published fleet with published guide hourly rates. Bookings are quoted in writing before anything is confirmed, and the same standard of welcome applies in Aberdeen as in Mayfair.

01Overview

Start with the journey, not the car

Nearly everyone who lands on this page already knows the shape of their trip. There is a flight, or a meeting, or a wedding at two o’clock, and the question is what happens in the gap between the front door and the thing itself. That gap is the ground segment, and it is the part of a first class journey that most often lets the rest of it down.

So the catalogue is arranged the way a reservations desk actually thinks. Find the group that matches your reason for moving, open the service inside it, and the page will tell you how the booking is planned, what is included before anyone talks about money, and which cars are usually sent. If none of them is an exact fit, message the desk with a description in plain English.

08How to choose

Four questions that settle it

Answer these and the right service is usually obvious before you have opened a single page.
  1. 01

Does it start at a gate?

If a flight or a train governs the timing, book from the airports group. Those pages are built around arrival times that move.

  2. 02

    Will the car wait?

If you need it held between stops, that is hourly work. Minimum blocks are set by vehicle and listed on your quotation.

  3. 03

How many people, how many cases?

Six passengers with full luggage is a different car from two with cabin bags. The fleet pages state both figures.

  4. 04

Is the arrival part of the event?

Weddings, premieres and race days are timed to a moment rather than a journey, and are planned differently for it.

How this index is organised

LF-01How this index is organised

How this index is organised

Chauffeur work divides less neatly than a price list suggests. A flight arrival and a wedding are both a car and a driver, but the two jobs are planned in completely different ways: one is built around a landing time that moves, the other around a ceremony time that does not. So the services below are grouped by how the day is planned rather than by what the car costs.

Start with the group that matches your reason for travelling. Airports and terminals covers anything that begins or ends at a gate. Business travel is the working day. Private and personal is a car held for you by the hour or the day. Occasions covers the fixtures and celebrations where the arrival matters, and distance and touring is anything that leaves the city behind for a few hours.

If two groups seem to fit, either page will get you to the same reservations desk, and the quotation will cover the whole itinerary rather than the piece you happened to click on.

Choosing how to book

Hourly hire or point to point

LF-02Hourly hire or point to point

Hourly hire or point to point

Most enquiries come down to this one choice. A point-to-point booking is a single run with a start and an end, priced on the journey. Hourly hire keeps the car and the chauffeur with you for a block of time, so you can stop, wait, change your mind and go somewhere that was not on the plan at nine in the morning.

The rule of thumb we use: if you will make more than two stops, or if any stop lasts under an hour, hourly hire usually costs less than stringing separate transfers together, and it certainly involves less waiting on a pavement. A single airport run with nothing either side of it is almost always cheaper booked as a transfer.

Minimum blocks apply to as-directed work, and they vary by vehicle rather than by service. Your quotation names the one that applies.

11Vehicles

The cars behind every service

Rates are set by vehicle, not by service, so the same car costs the same whatever it is booked for.

The fleet in full gives cabin detail and boot capacity for each car.

The common ground

What every one of these services has in common

LF-03What every one of these services has in common

What every one of these services has in common

The chauffeur has the address, the postcode and the door before they set off, not while they are circling. Where a job starts at an airport, the flight is watched from the tail number and the arrival time in the diary follows the aircraft rather than the schedule. Where it starts at a hotel or a private house, the car is on the road early enough to absorb one bad junction.

Luggage is handled by the chauffeur unless you would rather do it yourself. Bottled water sits in the door pocket. The boot has been checked for space against the number of cases you told us about, which is why we ask.

None of that is a premium extra. It is the ordinary shape of the work, and it is the reason the ground half of a journey stops being the part that goes wrong.

Booking a whole trip

When one booking turns into two

LF-04When one booking turns into two

When one booking turns into two

Itineraries rarely arrive whole. A client books a Heathrow collection, then remembers the dinner in Oxford the following evening and the return flight on Thursday morning. Sent as one enquiry, those three movements are quoted together, driven by the same chauffeur where the hours allow, and appear on a single written quotation.

Split across three separate bookings they cost more and read worse, because each one carries its own positioning mileage. Tell us the whole trip, even the parts you have not fixed yet, and the quotation will say which pieces are firm and which are indicative.

16Answers

Choosing a chauffeur service

Six answers about the catalogue itself. Service pages carry the questions specific to each job.

Which service should I book if my journey does not fit any of them neatly?

Pick the one closest to the start of your journey and send the rest as notes. Reservations reads the whole itinerary before quoting, so a booking that begins as an airport transfer and turns into a day of meetings is quoted as one job rather than three.

Does the price change between services?

No. Rates are set by vehicle, not by service, so a Mercedes-Benz S-Class costs the same per hour whether it is driven to a wedding or to a board meeting. What changes between services is the shape of the booking: minimum hours, waiting allowances and how far the car travels before it reaches you.

Can one chauffeur cover several services on the same trip?

Usually, and it is generally the better answer. Continuity means the chauffeur already knows where your luggage sits, which entrance you prefer and how long you take at a hotel desk. Driving-hours rules govern how long any one chauffeur can stay with a booking, and the quotation says plainly where a second chauffeur is needed.

How far in advance should a service page booking be made?

Airport and business work is often confirmed the day before without difficulty. Weddings, race meetings and anything landing on a fixture weekend are worth booking weeks ahead, because the vehicles that suit those days are the first to go. Send the enquiry as soon as the date is fixed, even if the times are not.

Is there a service for journeys that start outside London?

Yes. The coverage index lists every town with a page of its own, from the Heathrow corridor out to Aberdeen and Belfast, and any service on this page can start from any of them. Long-distance and intercity work is quoted on the run itself rather than on an hourly block.

What is the difference between a chauffeur service and a private hire booking?

A chauffeur is booked for a person and a plan, not for a ride. The car is held for the duration you have asked for, the route is worked out before the engine starts, and the chauffeur waits rather than moving on to the next fare. That is what the hourly and half-day structures on your quotation are describing.
