RAF Northolt chauffeur transfers: summary

First Class Chauffeurs provides chauffeur transfers at RAF Northolt in South Ruislip, west London. Northolt is a Royal Air Force station that accepts civil business aviation movements by prior permission only, within a movement allowance, and military operations take priority over civil traffic. Access to the station is controlled by the RAF, so vehicle and driver details are submitted in advance through the handling arrangements and nothing is assumed on the day. Bookings run against an aircraft registration and an estimated time of arrival rather than a flight number. The station lies roughly fifteen miles from central London off the A40, which makes it the closest business aviation airfield to the West End; the drive indicatively takes forty to seventy minutes into central London and rather less to Ealing, Harrow, Uxbridge and the western suburbs. Fixed fares appear on the pricing page and the written quotation confirms the final price, what it includes and any applicable tax.

01Overview

Arriving at Northolt

RAF Northolt sits at South Ruislip in west London, off the A40, and it is closer to the middle of the capital than any other airfield handling business aircraft. It is a working military station first; civil movements are accepted by prior permission, within a movement allowance, and they give way to Service requirements.

For a chauffeur that means the usual private aviation habits are not enough. Access is controlled by the station, passes and vehicle details are submitted in advance, and nobody drives through a gate because they have a passenger name. We plan Northolt jobs earlier than any other airfield we work at, and we plan them with the handler.

03Handling

Handling and where the car waits

Business aviation has handlers rather than halls, and the handler decides how close a car may get. Here is how each part of that works.
  • 01

    The civil passenger facility

Civil movements are handled in a small building on the station rather than in anything resembling a terminal. Your chauffeur reports as directed by the handling arrangement and waits where the station permits.

  • 02

    Station access and passes

This is a military site, so vehicle registration, driver details and timings are submitted ahead of the movement. A car that turns up unannounced does not get in, however good the reason.

  • 03

    The landside meeting point

Where airside access is not granted, a meeting point outside the station is agreed in advance and named in your confirmation. It is a short transfer, and it is agreed before the day rather than improvised at a barrier.

04The meet

How a Northolt collection runs

Four steps, in the order they happen. Most of them are finished before you are on the ground.
  1. Step 01

    Details submitted well in advance

Vehicle registration, chauffeur name and timings go to the handler ahead of the movement. Northolt is the one airfield where late notice can simply mean no access.

  2. Step 02

    Movement confirmed with the handler

The estimated arrival comes from the operator and the handling arrangement rather than any public source. It is checked on the morning and again as the aircraft approaches.

  3. Step 03

Access position confirmed before you land

You are told whether the car is meeting you inside the station or at the agreed point outside it. That answer is settled before the aircraft arrives, not afterwards.

  4. Step 04

    Straight onto the A40

The station sits beside the A40, which is the fastest road into the West End from anywhere west of the North Circular. The ground leg from Northolt is genuinely short.

A military station that takes civil movements

LF-01A military station that takes civil movements

A military station that takes civil movements

Northolt is not a private airport with a military tenant; it is an RAF station that permits a limited number of civil business aviation movements. Service operations come first, permission is required in advance, and the allowance is finite.

That ordering explains everything a passenger notices on the ground: the gate, the checks, the fact that a car cannot simply pull up. None of it is obstruction. It is a working air station applying its own rules to a visitor, which is entirely reasonable.

Prior permission, and what we submit for it

LF-02Prior permission, and what we submit for it

Prior permission, and what we submit for it

Ahead of a Northolt movement we provide the vehicle registration, the chauffeur’s details and the expected timings through the handling arrangement, and we do it early. Same-day changes are possible but they are not comfortable, and a substituted car at short notice is a genuine problem here rather than a minor one.

If you know a week ahead that a movement is happening, tell us then rather than the night before. It costs nothing to hold a booking and it removes the only failure mode this airfield really has.

The closest apron to the West End

LF-03The closest apron to the West End

The closest apron to the West End

Northolt’s advantage is geographic and considerable. It is roughly fifteen miles from the middle of London with the A40 running most of the way, which makes the ground leg to Mayfair or Marylebone shorter than from any other airfield handling business aircraft.

Out of the peaks that drive is forty minutes and pleasant. In the thick of a weekday afternoon the A40 into Paddington is slower, and we quote the honest range rather than the best-case one.

05The cars

What we send to Northolt

Private movements arrive with more luggage and fewer people than a scheduled flight, so the cars we send skew larger.

The A40 in and the A40 out

The A40 in and the A40 out

Western Avenue behaves in a way that repays knowing. Inbound to London it is quick until Hanger Lane and then variable; outbound it is the reverse. The Target roundabout and the Polish War Memorial junction are where the delays gather rather than on the open sections.

For an early departure from central London we leave before the A40 fills. For an afternoon arrival heading into town, the route sometimes drops off the trunk road earlier than a mapping app would suggest, and the chauffeur will already have decided that.

LF-05Heathrow, six miles away and a different world

Heathrow, six miles away and a different world

Northolt sits close to Heathrow, which makes it useful for itineraries that mix a private inbound with a scheduled long-haul outbound. The road connection between the two is short and the transfer is easy to arrange.

What is not short is the process at the far end. A Heathrow departure from a Northolt arrival still needs the check-in deadline respected, so we work the timing back from that rather than forward from the apron.

06What it costs

How a transfer fare is put together

A transfer is quoted as one fixed fare for the run rather than by the hour, and the quotation names everything that fare covers before you accept it.
01

The run itself

Both ends of the journey and the route as we intend to drive it, quoted as a single movement.

02

The cabin you choose

Seats and cases decide the car, and the car is the largest single lever on the figure.

03

The waiting allowance

Stated on the quotation, and larger on an arrival than on a hotel collection because a landing time moves.

04

Where the car starts

A car positioned for a dawn collection carries mileage nobody is sitting in, and the quotation says so.

Government, defence and the quiet end of the diary

Northolt handles movements that other airfields do not, and the ground work around them is correspondingly discreet. Chauffeurs brief on the arrangement rather than the passenger, do not discuss bookings on the station, and take direction from whoever is running the movement.

That is not a marketing position. It is how a car operates on a military site without becoming a nuisance to the people whose airfield it is.

When the answer is a meeting point outside the gate

LF-07When the answer is a meeting point outside the gate

When the answer is a meeting point outside the gate

Airside vehicle access at Northolt is not routine, and there are days when the answer is simply no. That is a fine outcome provided everybody knows it in advance, because the alternative arrangement is a named meeting point and a two-minute transfer.

What we will not do is imply in a quotation that the car will be at the aircraft steps and then explain otherwise on the day. The confirmation says which arrangement applies, and it says it before you are in the air.

Not every Northolt passenger is heading into town. Uxbridge, Harrow, Watford, Beaconsfield, Amersham and the Chilterns are all short runs from the station, and for those destinations the airfield is dramatically better placed than any of the London airports.

Those journeys are quoted fixed, with the address confirmed and the door named. On a country lane at dusk that detail is worth more than any amount of description of the vehicle.

10Answers

Northolt: questions we are asked

Six things people ask before booking a car to this airport, answered plainly.

Is RAF Northolt open to private aircraft?

It accepts civil business aviation movements by prior permission, within a limited allowance, alongside its work as a Royal Air Force station. Military operations take priority, so nothing about a civil movement there is guaranteed in the way it would be at a commercial field.

What do you need in advance for a Northolt collection?

Vehicle registration, chauffeur details and timings, submitted through the handling arrangement well before the movement. This is the one airfield where late notice can genuinely mean no access, so early booking is worth more than flexibility.

How far is Northolt from central London?

Around fifteen miles, with the A40 running most of the way, which makes it the closest business aviation airfield to the West End. The drive indicatively takes forty to seventy minutes depending on how Western Avenue is behaving.

Will the car be waiting at the aircraft?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. Airside vehicle access at a military station is not routine, so the confirmation states whether the meet is inside or at an agreed point outside the gate, and it states it before you fly rather than after you land.

Can you connect a Northolt arrival with a Heathrow departure?

Yes, and the two are only a few miles apart. We work the timing backwards from the Heathrow check-in deadline rather than forwards from the apron, because the short drive is the easy part of that itinerary and the terminal is not.

Do you cover journeys from Northolt into the Chilterns?

We do. Beaconsfield, Amersham, Chesham and the surrounding villages are close by, and the station is far better placed for them than Heathrow or Luton. Those runs are quoted as fixed journeys with the address confirmed beforehand.
