Chauffeur service in Mayfair — summary

Mayfair sits next to Marble Arch, St James's and Piccadilly, and bookings frequently pick up in two of them on the same run. Chauffeur service in Mayfair covers airport transfers, station collections, hourly hire and long-distance work, with the drive to London City taking an indicative 35-60 minutes over about 10 miles. The chauffeur finds the legal stopping point near Burlington Arcade before the booked time, sends one message naming it, and waits. Flights into London City are tracked from the tail number, so a delay moves our clock rather than your Mayfair booking. Vehicles run from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, all quoted per journey rather than per passenger, and the Mayfair quotation confirms the figure.

01First things about Mayfair

Chauffeur service in Mayfair

Most of what makes Mayfair difficult is invisible on a map. The squares are wide and the mews behind them are barely a car and a half across, the kerbs are almost entirely resident permit bay, and a hotel forecourt that looks open is often full of a delivery van. A chauffeur working here plans the last two hundred yards, not the last two miles.

Bookings out of W1 skew towards the airports and towards long days: a car held from breakfast at Claridge's through meetings on Grosvenor Street and out to a flight in the evening. The area sits inside the Congestion Charge zone, and Park Lane along its western edge is one of the roads you can use without entering it.

03The area

Mayfair from behind the windscreen

A working description of Mayfair, not a tourist one.

Grosvenor and Berkeley squares set the pattern: garden in the middle, a roadway running one way around the outside, permit bays on both kerbs. The Grosvenor estate laid the streets out, but the kerb belongs to Westminster, and its controls run later here than most people expect. Mount Street and South Audley Street are tight enough that a stopped car blocks the lane, so drivers hold on Farm Street or in a mews and come forward when the passenger appears. Shepherd Market is the exception, a genuine village grid where nothing larger than a saloon is comfortable after seven in the evening.

04Demand

The journeys that start in Mayfair

The regular work out of the W1J district.

The bookings come from three directions. Hotel guests at Claridge's, the Connaught and the Park Lane houses wanting a car to Heathrow or a private terminal; the funds and family offices on Curzon Street and Berkeley Square running half-day and full-day hire between meetings; and the galleries and auction previews around Cork Street and Bruton Street, which generate short evening movements rather than airport work. Weekend demand is thinner and almost entirely restaurant and theatre.

05Road time

Road time from Mayfair, honestly stated

How much spare time a Mayfair booking is given, and why.

Between about eight and ten in the morning, Park Lane southbound backs from Hyde Park Corner and Piccadilly is barely moving, so a car leaving for Heathrow often does better north through Marble Arch and out along the Bayswater Road than south into the Knightsbridge crawl. The evening squeeze starts earlier than people think, roughly half past four, and holds until seven. Late-night Mayfair has its own problem: Berkeley Square and Bruton Street fill with parked cars from the clubs and the running lane narrows to one.

06The kerb

Finding each other at the Mayfair kerb

Kerb space in Mayfair is finite. Here is how a collection on Mount Street works with that.

There is no such thing as an open kerb on Mount Street in the working day. The permit bays run the length of it, the loading bays are timed, and camera enforcement is constant. What works is a forecourt where a building has one, the Dorchester's in-and-out driveway, the turning space at Carlos Place outside the Connaught, Claridge's short frontage on Brook Street, and a mews behind everywhere else. Adam's Row and Three Kings Yard will take a car for the minute a handover needs, provided nothing is being delivered.

Collection notes for Mayfair

  • 01The Dorchester's forecourt is on the eastern, hotel side of Park Lane. Arrive northbound and you are on the park carriageway with no way across, so the approach is made southbound from Marble Arch or in from Deanery Street.
  • 02Claridge's frontage on Brook Street holds two cars at most. If the door is busy the car waits on Davies Street and comes forward on a call.
  • 03Mews addresses need the mews name, not the street it opens off. Adam's Row and Three Kings Yard are easy to drive straight past.
  • 04For a Bond Street collection, give a cross street. Nothing stops on New Bond Street itself between ten and six.

What the boot takes on a London City run

  • 02

Where the chauffeur stands at London City

Groups are met the same way, with one chauffeur per car and a single point to gather at inside London City before the run into Mayfair. Four people and eight cases across two saloons into Mayfair is usually calmer than everyone waiting at London City for one large vehicle.

  • 03

    Written, not estimated, for Mayfair

Ask for a figure and you get a figure, usually within the hour, for the journey you described from Mayfair rather than a range with a caveat hanging off it.

  • 04

The clock moves, the Mayfair price does not

If the aircraft holds over the airfield for half an hour, the chauffeur stays put and the drive into Mayfair starts later. Nothing on the written Mayfair quotation moves because of it.

  • 05

One chauffeur for the whole Mayfair journey

The chauffeur driving you has made the Mayfair to London City run before and knows which end of Mount Street is worth avoiding at eight in the morning. That is a practical Mayfair skill, not a sales line.

  • 06

    Holding the car in Mayfair

Two collections in Mayfair on one run is ordinary: a house, then a colleague at The Dorchester, then out to the airport. One car, one chauffeur, one figure covering the whole run from Mount Street to London City.

Coming back into Mayfair from London City at six in the evening is not the same journey as the reverse at six in the morning, and one table cannot show both. Four hours, six hours, a Mayfair day

LF-01Four hours, six hours, a Mayfair day

Four hours, six hours, a Mayfair day

Some Mayfair days do not fit a transfer. Three appointments between Burlington Arcade and Farm Street Church, a lunch that overruns, a change of plan at four: booking the car by the hour costs less thought than booking four separate journeys and hoping they line up.

Common shapes for this work: a morning of meetings, a day between Burlington Arcade and Marble Arch, a wedding where the car is needed at both ends, or an evening that begins at Brown's Hotel and ends somewhere nobody has decided yet.

We ask for a mobile number for one reason: so the chauffeur can say exactly where in Mayfair the car is without you having to guess. In Mayfair that single message is often the difference between leaving on time and not.

What you should notice about a collection in Mayfair is that there is nothing to notice. The bags are handled, the route out of Mayfair is settled, and the only decision you make is whether you want to talk.

  • Chauffeur, vehicle and registration on the Mayfair confirmation before the day
  • Car in position ahead of the booked time, parked legally near Burlington Arcade
  • One message naming exactly where the car is standing in Mayfair
  • Luggage loaded at the Mayfair kerb, doors held, no waiting on the pavement
The morning run out of Mayfair

The morning run out of Mayfair

Most missed flights out of London City are lost somewhere in the W1J district rather than in the air. Out of Mayfair the ground problem is Mount Street between about seven and half past nine, and the answer is leaving before it rather than driving harder through it.

The car stops at the London City terminal your airline uses, not the first one signposted off Mount Street. Cases come out, the chauffeur checks you have everything, and that is the end of the Mayfair ground half until you land somewhere else.

The board goes up before the London City doors begin producing passengers, and comes down when you are standing in front of it with Mayfair ahead of you. None of that depends on you having a working phone between London City and Mayfair.

A stop on the way in is easy to arrange: someone dropped in Marble Arch, a detour past Brown's Hotel, or a supermarket before you reach an empty fridge. Put it on the Mayfair booking and it appears in the price.

  • A quiet cabin for the 10 miles back into Mayfair
  • Aircraft tracked into London City from the tail number, so Mayfair is reached on time
  • Chauffeur inside the London City arrivals hall with a board naming you and Mayfair
  • London City car park found and paid for before the Mayfair chauffeur walks in
Bond Street to your door in Mayfair

LF-05Bond Street to your door in Mayfair

Bond Street to your door in Mayfair

Bond Street is the usual meeting point for anyone coming into Mayfair by rail. The car waits where Bond Street allows it, and the chauffeur walks in to find you if the platform is a long way from the road.

If the train into Bond Street is cancelled entirely, the car can meet you wherever you end up instead. That flexibility is easier to arrange in advance than at the moment it is needed, so mention it when you book the Mayfair leg.

13Practicalities

The last mile into Mayfair, and the paperwork

The fleet against a Mayfair journey

LF-06The fleet against a Mayfair journey

The fleet against a Mayfair journey

Suite and Signature classes are for arrivals that are themselves part of the event: a wedding at Brown's Hotel, a milestone dinner, a photograph that outlives the day. For a five o'clock run out of Mayfair to London City they are unnecessary.

Two saloons leaving Mayfair at the same minute usually beats one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. Everyone gets a door, the luggage splits, and neither car starts the Mayfair day already behind.

Making a Mayfair booking

LF-07Making a Mayfair booking

Making a Mayfair booking

We would rather have too much detail about the Mayfair collection than too little. If the collection in Mayfair is awkward — a gated entrance, a narrow turning off Mount Street, a building with two doors — say so, and the chauffeur is briefed before the day.

If the journey is unusual — a very early start from Mayfair, a run to somewhere with no obvious address, an overnight wait — say so at the enquiry stage. Those are all ordinary Mayfair work, and all easier to price honestly in advance.

17Answers

Mayfair chauffeur questions

The questions Mount Street and London City between them tend to raise.

Can a chauffeur wait outside a Mayfair address while I finish a meeting?

Rarely at the door. Almost every kerb in W1J and W1K is a resident permit bay or a timed loading bay with camera enforcement, so the car waits nearby, in a mews, on a side street off Davies Street or in a car park, and comes to the door when you call. With a mobile number it is a two-minute wait rather than a hunt.

Which airport is quickest from Mayfair for an early flight?

London City is the shortest run at roughly ten miles, and before seven in the morning it moves well through the City. Heathrow is about seventeen miles and usually 40 to 70 minutes depending on the A4. For a first departure of the day out of Heathrow, leaving Mayfair before six changes the journey completely.

Do you collect from Mayfair members' clubs late at night?

Yes. The practical part is where the car stands. The streets around Berkeley Square and Bruton Street fill with parked cars after eleven, so the driver holds on a nearby corner rather than circling. Tell us the club and the door and the meeting point is agreed before you go in.

Is Mayfair inside the Congestion Charge zone?

The area east of Park Lane is inside it. Park Lane itself runs along the boundary, so a car can use it as a through route without entering the zone. The whole of W1 is also within the London-wide ULEZ, which applies at all hours.
