Chauffeur service in Soho, W1D and W1F

Soho does not let a car near most of its addresses after dark. The answer is a named corner on the edge of the grid and a driver who is already standing on it.

Chauffeur service in Soho — summary

Two kinds of booking come out of Soho. The first is a flight: a car to London City on an indicative 30-60 minutes, roughly 9 miles, timed backwards from when check-in closes rather than forwards from a Soho postcode. The second is a day with too many fixed points to book as separate journeys, where the chauffeur holds the car near Palace Theatre and moves when you do. Both are quoted per vehicle, in writing, before a car is allocated to Soho. Coverage runs on to Covent Garden and Fitzrovia, and London City, Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton are all driven from here. No standing price list is published, and nothing on a Soho booking is metered.

01Opening on Soho

Chauffeur service in Soho

Almost nothing in Soho is more than four hundred yards from somewhere a car can legally stand, and almost nothing is reachable by car at nine in the evening. The grid is narrow, the loading bays are occupied from six in the morning, and Westminster keeps a version of the al fresco closures that shut several streets to traffic through the warmer months.

Work here is short-notice and late. Post-production houses on Wardour Street sending someone to a screening, clubs on Dean and Greek Street at closing, theatre parties on Shaftesbury Avenue, and the occasional five o'clock airport run from a flat above a restaurant. Soho sits inside the Congestion Charge zone and the ULEZ applies around the clock.

03The area

Soho on the ground

The geometry of Soho: where a saloon fits and where it does not.

Think of it as a box bounded by Oxford Street, Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road, with almost no through traffic inside. Oxford Street is closed to general traffic for most of the working day, buses and black cabs only, so a private car cannot use it as an approach at all. The north-south streets are mostly one-way and they alternate, which is why an address on Dean Street is reached differently from one on Frith Street. Carnaby Street and much of the eastern edge is paved and takes no vehicles whatsoever.

04Demand

The bookings Soho actually makes

Who needs a car in Soho, and at what hour.

Media is the backbone, the editing and grading houses between Wardour Street and Golden Square, which book cars for talent arriving for a session and again at midnight when the session overruns. Restaurants add a second layer: parties of four leaving after service, usually identified by a table booking name rather than an address. Theatre work concentrates on Shaftesbury Avenue and Cambridge Circus. Airport jobs exist here but are the smallest share of the diary.

05Road time

Soho to London City, by the clock

When to be ready in Soho, and what we allow on top of it.

The quiet window runs from about half past nine in the morning until midday, once the deliveries have cleared and before the lunch trade. From five the pavements spill into the roadway and progress is measured in single car lengths. Friday and Saturday nights are the extreme case: between eight and one, assume the car cannot reach the door at all and plan the meeting point accordingly. Sunday mornings, by contrast, are the easiest driving anywhere in the West End.

06The kerb

Where a car can legally stop in Soho

Kerb space in Soho is finite. Here is how a collection on Great Marlborough Street works with that.

Legal standing inside the grid effectively means a loading bay outside its hours, and there are not many of those. The reliable edges are Golden Square, which has bays around the garden, the western side of Soho Square, Great Marlborough Street by Liberty, and the Shaftesbury Avenue frontage on a theatre night. Ham Yard has a hotel forecourt that will take a car. Everything else is a walk of two or three minutes, which is why the meeting point is agreed at the time of booking rather than argued about in the street.

Collection notes for Soho

  • 01Oxford Street is buses and taxis only through the working day, so a meeting point on a side street is worth more than a shopfront number.
  • 02For a restaurant collection the booking name is more use than the street number. Staff will walk a party out to the corner if they know a car is waiting there.
  • 03In summer, assume Old Compton Street and its neighbours are shut to traffic in the evening and work from Charing Cross Road or Wardour Street instead.
  • 04Golden Square is the most dependable place to hold a car inside Soho and it is under five minutes on foot from almost anywhere in the grid.

What the boot takes on a London City run

Luggage is sized at the quotation stage, before a car is allocated to Soho. Skis, golf bags and flight cases all change the vehicle, and it is cheaper to know that in advance than to discover it on Great Marlborough Street.

  • 02

Where the chauffeur stands at London City

The chauffeur has left Soho and is inside London City before the belt starts moving. That is not politeness, it is the only way the meet works: through the doors, find the board, hand over the cases, and be back in Soho without having thought about parking once.

  • 03

Priced before the car sets off for Soho

Tell us the shape of a job around Chinatown and the figure comes back before you commit to anything. The written quotation for a Soho booking confirms the final figure and what sits inside it.

  • 04

The clock moves, the Soho price does not

Every arrival into London City is watched rather than assumed from Soho. The chauffeur leaves Soho on the revised time, which keeps the car off the airport clock and the cost where it was quoted.

  • 05

The same chauffeur, Soho to London City

Every chauffeur working Soho is licensed for private hire and drives one of our own vehicles. Beyond that, what matters here is that they know Soho: the turnings, the loading bays and the two minutes it takes to walk from Cambridge Circus.

  • 06

    Holding the car in Soho

Hourly bookings hold the car in Soho for the whole period. It waits near Chinatown between appointments with your coat and your papers still in it, which is the point of taking a chauffeur rather than a taxi.

09In detail

How a Soho journey actually runs

Four hours, six hours, a Soho day

LF-01Four hours, six hours, a Soho day

Four hours, six hours, a Soho day

Some Soho days do not fit a transfer. Three appointments between Chinatown and Cambridge Circus, a lunch that overruns, a change of plan at four: booking the car by the hour costs less thought than booking four separate journeys and hoping they line up.

The car can be released early anywhere in Soho. If a Soho day finishes at four rather than six we do not invent work for the rest of it, and the quotation sets out how the minimum block applies.

Ten minutes early on Great Marlborough Street, engine off, boot unlocked. The chauffeur has already worked out whether Great Marlborough Street will let a car stand outside your door at that hour, or whether the answer is the side street behind Cambridge Circus.

Where a second passenger joins in Covent Garden, that stop is already on the booking and the chauffeur has the address. Nobody is telephoning anybody from a Soho kerb to ask where they have got to.

  • Indicative 30-60 minutes from Soho to London City, given once and then left alone
  • Pick-ups at Piccadilly Circus made on the side that tolerates a stationary car
  • Collections from Palace Theatre arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
  • The car holds on Wardour Street when the kerb outside your door will not take it
9 miles to the terminal

LF-039 miles to the terminal

9 miles to the terminal

The car is loaded and moving before Great Marlborough Street has decided what kind of morning it intends to be. That margin on Great Marlborough Street is not padding. It is the difference between a calm departure from Soho and a fast one.

Where the flight is private, the drive from Soho ends airside at the London City FBO rather than at a terminal door, and the timings compress accordingly. Say so when you enquire from Soho and the quotation is built round the handling agent's slot instead of a check-in desk.

Reaching London City at one in the morning

Landing at London City after a long flight, with Soho still to come, is the point at which most ground arrangements fall over. A Soho return is built for it. The chauffeur is inside arrivals, the car is close, and the drive back into Soho starts within a few minutes of you clearing customs.

Some returns into Soho finish at a hotel rather than a house. The chauffeur takes the cases into Ronnie Scott's, hands them over at the desk, and the booking closes there instead of on the kerb outside it.

  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Soho
  • The same chauffeur who drove you out of Soho

When Soho arrives by rail

When Soho arrives by rail

Some journeys into Soho genuinely are best done by rail for the long middle. What they still need is somebody at the end of the Piccadilly Circus platform, and that is the part no timetable covers.

For a journey into Soho where rail covers the distance and the car covers the ends, book both legs at once. The quotation then names the collection at Piccadilly Circus and the run into Soho as a single price.

Arriving in Soho by other means

Sizing the vehicle for a Soho booking

LF-06Sizing the vehicle for a Soho booking

Sizing the vehicle for a Soho booking

The honest starting point is that every class leaves Soho and reaches London City in the same 30-60 minutes. Choosing between them for a Soho booking is a question about the boot and the back seat rather than about the engine.

Where one car does a whole day across Soho, comfort compounds. Six hours in a First Saloon across Soho is a materially different day from six hours in something smaller, and the hourly rates reflect that.

What to send us about Soho

Booking a Soho car for somebody else is common. Give us their name and number and the chauffeur deals with them directly at the Soho end, while the confirmation still comes to you.

Repeat journeys out of Soho are handled the same way as a single booking, with the price agreed in writing each time rather than accruing quietly. Nothing on a Soho booking is charged that you have not seen first.

17Answers

Soho chauffeur questions

The questions Soho bookings actually raise, answered without hedging.

Where can a car actually collect me in Soho on a Friday night?

Not from the door on most streets. The workable points are Golden Square, the Soho Square side, Great Marlborough Street and the Shaftesbury Avenue kerb. Your driver picks whichever is closest to your address, sends the exact spot before you leave, and waits there rather than driving in circles through streets that are effectively pedestrian by then.

Can you collect a party leaving a Soho edit or screening after midnight?

Yes, and it is routine here. Late finishes are the norm in the post-production streets, so the booking is normally taken with an approximate finish time and the driver holds nearby. Once the session ends a call brings the car forward, usually to Wardour Street or Great Marlborough Street depending on which building you are in.

Do the evening street closures in Soho affect a booked pickup?

They change the meeting point, not the booking. Through the warmer months several of the restaurant streets close to traffic from late afternoon, so a driver who would otherwise pull up outside will suggest the nearest through road instead. It usually adds a ninety-second walk and saves fifteen minutes of waiting.

How long should I allow from Soho to Heathrow for an evening flight?

Between about 45 and 75 minutes on the road for roughly eighteen miles, and more if you are leaving between four and seven. Because getting the car to you inside Soho can itself take a few minutes at that hour, the sensible plan is to be at the meeting point on time rather than expecting the car at a doorstep.
