Personal chauffeur service: summary

A personal chauffeur from First Class Chauffeurs is a standing arrangement in which one household is driven regularly by the same person rather than by whoever is free. Typical arrangements cover school runs, clinic and hospital appointments, weekly standing journeys and errands the client is not in the car for. The chauffeur becomes familiar with the household routine, the access codes and the route choices that work at particular times of day. Child seats and booster seats are fitted where they are needed, family members can travel without the account holder present, and a personal assistant or house manager can book and amend journeys. Work is quoted on the same hourly and half-day basis as all other bookings, and confirmed in writing.

01Overview

What this covers

A personal chauffeur booking is a standing arrangement rather than a series of separate jobs. The same person drives you, learns the household's rhythm, and stops needing to be told the things everybody in the family already knows. It suits people who travel locally and often, where the friction is not the driving but the endless re-explaining.

Arrangements are built around whatever the week actually contains. Three mornings, two full days, every Thursday for a year: all of it is quoted from the same hourly and half-day figures as our other work, so nothing about the pricing becomes opaque simply because the booking repeats.

03Included as standard

What personal chauffeur includes

  • 01

    A regular chauffeur

One person assigned to the arrangement, with a named second who already knows the routine for the weeks the first is away.

  • 02

    The routine written down

Gate codes, school pickup point, which door the clinic uses, where the car may and may not wait. Recorded once rather than repeated weekly.

  • 03

    Child and booster seats

Fitted before collection and checked, in the right stage for each child rather than a spare from the boot.

  • 04

    Journeys without you

Family members, guests and unaccompanied older children driven on your instruction, with a message when they are safely in and out.

  • 05

    Errands on the way

A prescription collected, a suit picked up, a parcel delivered while the car is already out and nobody is in the back.

  • 06

    One point of contact

The same number for booking, moving and cancelling, with changes confirmed in writing so nothing rests on a remembered conversation.

04Who books it

Who asks for this

Four kinds of enquiry arrive for this work, and each wants something slightly different from it.
  • 01

Families with a fixed weekly shape

School at eight, ballet on Wednesday, grandparents on Sunday. The same journeys, driven by someone who already knows them.

  • 02

    People who have stopped driving

Clients who have given up a licence, or been asked to, and want their independence back without a different stranger each week.

  • 03

    Households running two diaries

Two adults, overlapping commitments and one car that has to be in two places, coordinated by a PA rather than by argument.

  • 04

Patients on a course of treatment

Weekly appointments over months, where the same driver, the same car and the same seat make a difficult routine easier.

05How it works

From the first message to the last mile

The same sequence every time, so nobody is left guessing what happens next.
  1. Step 01

    A conversation about the week

What repeats, what varies, who else travels, and which journeys are fixed. This takes twenty minutes and saves months of instructions.

  2. Step 02

    A chauffeur is matched

We put forward a chauffeur suited to the work, and a second who will cover the weeks the first is off.

  3. Step 03

    The standing booking is held

Recurring slots are blocked in the diary ahead of general bookings so the Tuesday morning is genuinely yours.

  4. Step 04

    It runs, and it adapts

Half terms, holidays, appointments that move. You send a message and the pattern shifts without renegotiating the arrangement.

In detail

A regular driver rather than a different one each time

LF-01A regular driver rather than a different one each time

A regular driver rather than a different one each time

The difference between a personal chauffeur and a well-run car service is repetition. With one regular chauffeur nobody has to explain that the gate needs holding for four seconds after the code, that the youngest gets travel sick facing backwards, or that the third turning is closed on market days.

We assign a chauffeur to an arrangement rather than to a journey, and we assign a named second at the same time. That second person shadows one or two runs early on, which is unglamorous but means the week your regular chauffeur is on leave does not feel like starting again.

None of this means the same face forever. If the fit is wrong, tell us and we will change it without any awkwardness. A personal chauffeur arrangement only works when the household is genuinely comfortable, and that is a matter of temperament as much as anything else.

Standing arrangements: the school gate, the clinic, the Tuesday train

Recurring journeys get held in the diary as a block rather than booked one at a time. A Tuesday nine o'clock that repeats for a term is protected from the general run of bookings, which is what stops a busy Tuesday in October quietly becoming somebody else's.

School runs are the most common standing work and the most exacting. Pickup points move, the road outside is usually a controlled zone at exactly the wrong time, and being four minutes late matters to a nine-year-old in a way it does not to an adult. The pickup arrangement is agreed with the school where the school wants it agreed.

Medical courses run the other way: long, repetitive and often unpredictable in length. The car waits rather than leaving, because a patient who has just finished an infusion should not be standing outside a hospital waiting for a return call.

What to expect

Learning a household's habits

LF-03Learning a household's habits

Learning a household's habits

Small preferences add up. The cabin at nineteen degrees rather than twenty-two. Radio off in the mornings. The rear left seat because it is the one furthest from the pavement on your side of the street. Water in the door, not the console.

A chauffeur working with the same household picks up most of this within a fortnight and we write down the rest so it survives a change of driver. The list looks trivial written out and makes a considerable difference to how a car feels at seven forty in the morning.

Some of it is practical rather than preference. Which of the two routes to the surgery has fewer speed humps matters if someone in the car is recovering from surgery, and it is the kind of thing only a regular driver ever learns.

Behind the booking

Errands that do not involve you being in the car

LF-04Errands that do not involve you being in the car

Errands that do not involve you being in the car

A good deal of personal chauffeur work happens with nobody in the back. Collecting a prescription, dropping a set of keys with an agent, taking a case ahead to a hotel, fetching a repaired watch. All of it is within the hours you have booked and none of it requires you to be present.

The rule we work to is simple: your chauffeur will carry, collect and deliver, and will not sign for anything of significant value or accept anything that has not been described in advance. Where a collection needs identification or a card, that is arranged before the car leaves rather than at the counter.

For households with a lot of this, an errands hour tacked onto a standing morning booking is usually more efficient than a separate job. The car is already out and the driver is already local.

On the day

Family travel and the seats that go in

LF-05Family travel and the seats that go in

Family travel and the seats that go in

Child seats are fitted before the car arrives, not wrestled into place at the kerb while a school bell goes. We ask for the age, weight and height of each child rather than just "a child seat", because the difference between a stage two and a high-back booster is not a detail you want discovered on the pavement.

Older children travelling alone are a category of their own. We drive unaccompanied minors on a parent's written instruction, with an agreed handover at both ends and a message to say the drop has happened. The chauffeur does not leave a school or a house until the child is inside.

Grandparents, nannies and guests travel on the same arrangement. Where somebody else is booking on your behalf, we confirm the journey back to you as well so there is never a car sent that the household did not expect.

Practical notes

LF-06Cancelling, moving and the notice that helps

Cancelling, moving and the notice that helps

Standing bookings move constantly and that is the nature of them. School closes for snow, an appointment shifts by two hours, half term arrives. Changes are taken by message at any hour and confirmed in writing so nobody is relying on a conversation half remembered from a car park.

Notice matters more for a cancellation than for a move. Shifting a Tuesday morning to Tuesday afternoon is usually straightforward on the day. Cancelling a Tuesday entirely at eight o'clock on Tuesday means a chauffeur who turned down other work, which is why the terms in your quotation set out the notice period for the arrangement.

Long absences are worth telling us about in advance. A household away for six weeks in the summer can pause an arrangement rather than cancel it, and the same chauffeur is there in September.

Before you confirm

Working with a PA or house manager

LF-07Working with a PA or house manager

Working with a PA or house manager

Most standing arrangements are administered by somebody other than the passenger. We take instructions from a named assistant, house manager or family office contact, and we confirm every booking and change back to that person in writing so there is a record that does not live in anyone's memory.

Where several people can book, we ask for a short list of who those people are. It avoids the situation where two members of a household independently arrange the same car for the same Thursday and neither knows.

Reporting is kept plain. Journeys, times and vehicles, sent at whatever interval suits the household. Nothing more elaborate than that unless it is asked for.

The handover when your regular chauffeur is off

LF-08The handover when your regular chauffeur is off

The handover when your regular chauffeur is off

Holidays, illness and training all happen, and an arrangement that collapses when one person is away was never an arrangement. The named second chauffeur has the same notes, has driven the route at least once, and is introduced before the week they are needed rather than on the morning.

A short written handover goes with the cover: the standing times, the access details, the preferences, and anything that has changed recently. It takes ten minutes to write and saves the household from a fortnight of instructing somebody from scratch.

If a cover week goes badly we would rather hear it plainly. The point of a personal arrangement is that it feels settled, and a cover chauffeur who does not fit is a fixable problem.

18Answers

Questions about personal chauffeur

Six answers that come up on almost every enquiry of this kind.

Will I have the same chauffeur every time?

That is the intention of the arrangement. One chauffeur is assigned to the household, and a named second is briefed at the same time to cover leave and illness so the routine holds when the first is unavailable.

Can you hold a standing weekly booking?

Yes. Recurring slots are blocked in the diary ahead of general work, which is what protects a Tuesday nine o'clock through a busy month rather than leaving it to be claimed by whoever books first.

How much notice do you need to cancel a regular run?

Moving a journey within the same day is usually straightforward. Cancelling one outright means a chauffeur who has already turned down other work, so the notice period for your arrangement is set out in the written quotation.

Can the chauffeur drive family members without me in the car?

Yes, on your instruction. Guests, relatives and unaccompanied older children travel regularly, with an agreed handover at both ends and a message confirming the drop has happened.

Do you fit child seats?

We do, and we fit them before the car arrives. Tell us each child's age, weight and height rather than simply asking for a child seat, because the right stage of seat is not something anyone wants to work out at the kerb.

Can my assistant book and change journeys on my behalf?

Yes. We take instructions from a named assistant, house manager or family office contact and confirm each booking and amendment back in writing, so there is a written record rather than a remembered conversation.
