Chauffeur hire in Manchester and across the M postcodes

The ground half of a Manchester itinerary is short but rarely simple: nine miles of motorway, then a city with more bus gates than through routes.

Chauffeur service in Manchester — summary

Two kinds of booking come out of Manchester. The first is a flight: a car to Manchester Airport on an indicative 25-45 minutes, roughly 10 miles, timed backwards from when check-in closes rather than forwards from a Manchester postcode. The second is a day with too many fixed points to book as separate journeys, where the chauffeur holds the car near Manchester Central Convention Complex and moves when you do. Both are quoted per vehicle, in writing, before a car is allocated to Manchester. Coverage runs on to Salford and Stockport, and Manchester Airport, Liverpool John Lennon, Leeds Bradford and Heathrow are all driven from here. No standing price list is published, and nothing on a Manchester booking is metered.

01Manchester in brief

Chauffeur service in Manchester

Manchester sits close enough to its airport that people underestimate the run. Nine miles of M56 is the easy part; the last mile into the city, through the Mancunian Way and a centre rebuilt around bus priority, is where the minutes go. We plan the kerb before the car leaves, because a hotel entrance on Deansgate is not the same address as its loading bay.

Most of our Manchester work is the ground segment either side of a flight, and most of it runs through Terminal 2 or Terminal 3. Airlines have been moving between terminals as the airport rebuilds, so we confirm which building you are actually in the day before, then meet you inside it rather than telephoning from a car park.

03The area

M56, and everything that hangs off it

Written from the driver's side of the windscreen, about Manchester rather than about the guidebook.

Driving here means knowing which streets still work. Deansgate has been narrowed and part-closed, Oxford Road runs as a bus corridor for most of the day, and Portland Street carries restrictions a satnav will cheerfully ignore. The inner ring road and the Mancunian Way take the through traffic; inside them it is short blocks, tram tracks and one-way loops. The city has spent years revising its air quality plans and the signage has changed with them. What has not changed is that a car needs a legal stopping place, and in this centre those are specific rather than plentiful.

04Demand

Who calls from Manchester, and what for

Who we collect from Bridgewater Hall and the streets around it.

Bookings come from the working quarters more than the tourist ones. Spinningfields and St Peter's Square produce early airport runs; the university and hospital corridor along Oxford Road brings visiting clinicians and academics; the arenas empty at eleven, when the trams are already full. Conference weeks at Manchester Central add several hundred separate ground movements, and the two football grounds add their own. It is a city that books ground transport in bursts rather than evenly through the week.

05Road time

Timing the run to Manchester Airport

Traffic in Manchester is predictable if you know the hour. This is the hour M56 turns on.

Reckon on twenty-five minutes to the airport at four in the morning and double that at eight. The M56 backs up from junction 5 through the peak, the M60 between junctions 1 and 5 is unreliable in both directions, and the Mancunian Way slip roads queue back onto the surface streets. Matchdays close roads on a published schedule. Arena nights put several thousand people onto Great Ducie Street inside ten minutes. We build the collection time backwards from your gate rather than forwards from your postcode.

06The kerb

Standing, waiting and the pick-up point in Manchester

The small choreography of a Manchester collection.

Waiting is the constraint, not driving. Most of the centre is double yellow or loading-only, the hotel frontages on Deansgate and Peter Street hold two cars at best, and the ranks are enforced properly. At Piccadilly the London Road ramp is a taxi rank with a short-stay behind it, so we normally meet on the Fairfield Street side or level with the station car park. Where there is no legal kerb the driver holds a street away and comes forward as you reach the door, which is why he asks for a mobile number.

Collection notes for Manchester

  • 01Piccadilly: the ramp off London Road is a rank. We collect from the Fairfield Street entrance or level with the short-stay, and come up to the platform if you would rather not carry bags.
  • 02Manchester Central and the Bridgewater Hall share Lower Mosley Street, which turns into one long set-down at the end of an event. We use the Windmill Street side instead.
  • 03Deansgate hotels have no forecourt. The car holds nearby and pulls up when you are at the door.
  • 04On matchdays we agree a collection point outside the road closure ring before you go in, not after.

07Included as standard

What you get when you book from Manchester

  • 01

What we do while Manchester Airport holds you

Airlines republish a schedule; from Manchester we watch the aeroplane instead. The two diverge often enough that a car leaving Manchester on the printed time would spend half its life waiting at Manchester Airport and the other half arriving late.

  • 02

Local enough to park in Manchester

Chauffeurs are briefed before they set off: the address in Manchester, the entrance, the flight, and anything you have told us about the door you will come out of. None of it is discovered on the Manchester pavement.

  • 03

No car park hunt at Manchester Airport

Collections from Manchester Airport back to Manchester are met inside the building. Trolley to the boot, boot to M56, and you are in Manchester without having negotiated a short-stay car park with three suitcases.

  • 04

The boot, and what fits in it for Manchester Airport

Cases leaving Manchester are carried rather than watched. From the door in Manchester to the boot, and from the boot to the trolley at Manchester Airport, without you handling anything you would rather not.

  • 05

Waiting time on the Manchester clock

A dinner near Manchester Town Hall that runs ninety minutes over is not a crisis. On hourly hire in Manchester the clock simply runs at the published rate, and the total is confirmed in writing afterwards.

  • 06

The figure agreed before you left Manchester

Traffic risk on M56 sits with us. A bad morning on M56 makes the journey longer and the price identical, which is most of the practical difference between a chauffeur and a metered car.

Four classes for Manchester work

LF-01Four classes for Manchester work

Four classes for Manchester work

Cabin class covers the everyday work: the E-Class does the 25-45 minutes from Manchester to Manchester Airport as capably as anything else in the fleet, and the rear seat is a perfectly good place to spend it.

For an arrival that is itself part of the event — a wedding at Manchester Royal Infirmary, a milestone dinner, a photograph that will outlive the day — the Suite and Signature classes exist. For the run out of Manchester to Manchester Airport at half past five in the morning, they are not necessary and we will say so.

What time to leave Manchester

LF-02What time to leave Manchester

What time to leave Manchester

The arithmetic is simple and people still get it wrong: 25-45 minutes of road, plus the walk from the drop-off, plus the queue at the desk, plus whatever M56 adds on the day. We do that sum before quoting a Manchester collection.

On a very early start the streets around Piccadilly Gardens are the easiest they will be all day, which is why a five o'clock collection is quoted with more confidence than an afternoon one.

Coming home to Manchester

LF-03Coming home to Manchester

Coming home to Manchester

Where a group bound for Manchester lands together, one gathering point inside Manchester Airport works better than several. The chauffeurs stand together, the cases split sensibly, and the cars leave for Manchester at the same minute.

If the onward journey is by rail, the car runs to Manchester Victoria instead of home, with the cases carried to the barrier and enough margin left for the train you actually intend to take.

  • Waiting from touchdown at Manchester Airport built into the Manchester transfer
  • Bags taken from the Manchester Airport trolley to the boot and on to Manchester
  • A diversion away from Manchester Airport requoted for Manchester in writing, not argued about
  • Late landings still end with the cases at your door in Manchester

Most of the work in a Manchester collection happens before anyone appears. Where to stop in Manchester, which way to face, how long the car can sit there, and what to do when a delivery van is already in the only space.

From the moment the car leaves Manchester, the arrival time is ours to manage. If the arrival at Manchester Airport moves you hear about it once, with a number attached, rather than in a series of updates sent to you in Manchester.

  • Gated entrances and courtyards in Manchester checked in advance
  • A second collection in Salford priced into the same booking

Manchester Victoria and Manchester Oxford Road are the usual meeting points for anyone reaching Manchester by rail. Which of them we use depends on your service and on where a car can actually stand in Manchester.

The reverse out of Manchester works too. A car from Manchester to Manchester Oxford Road for an early departure means you are on the platform rather than in a taxi queue, and the chauffeur carries the bags to the barrier.

Days that start in Manchester and end elsewhere

Hourly hire suits Manchester days where the destination list is still provisional. Start at an address in Manchester, aim at Piccadilly Gardens, and change it twice before lunch without anyone having to rebook anything.

If the Manchester day overruns, it overruns. Additional time is charged at the published hourly rate and confirmed afterwards in writing, not applied as a penalty on a Manchester roadside.

Changes, cancellations and Manchester

Awkward Manchester addresses are worth describing. A gated entrance, a narrow turning off M56, a building with two doors: none of them are problems, and all of them are better known before the day.

Where a building in Manchester has a concierge or a front desk, tell us. The chauffeur speaks to them rather than standing in the lobby at Bridgewater Hall working out who to ask.

17Answers

Manchester chauffeur questions

What a first-time Manchester booking usually wants to check.

Which Manchester Airport terminal will my chauffeur meet me in?

Whichever one your flight actually arrives at. Airlines have been shifting between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 as the airport rebuilds, so we check the terminal against your flight number the day before and confirm the meeting point in writing. The driver waits inside arrivals with a name board rather than in a car park.

How early should a car leave central Manchester for a morning flight?

For a departure before nine we usually leave the centre about two and a half hours ahead of take-off. The M56 queues from junction 5 in the morning peak and the terminal drop-off levels fill quickly, so the spare twenty minutes gets spent at the kerb rather than on a slip road.

Can a chauffeur wait outside a hotel on Deansgate?

Not for long. Deansgate has been narrowed and most of the hotel frontages there are loading bays or red-lined. The car holds on a nearby street and comes forward when you are ready, normally inside a minute or two of your call.

Do you cover Didsbury and the southern suburbs as well as the centre?

Yes. The M20 and M21 postcodes sit on the airport side of the city, which often makes them a quicker run than the centre itself. Wilmslow Road through Withington is the exception in the evening peak, so we take Princess Parkway or the A34 instead.
