Chauffeur service in Stockport — summary

Around Stockport Air Raid Shelters the roads were laid out long before anyone was reversing a long wheelbase into them, and a chauffeur in Stockport plans the last two hundred yards rather than the last two miles. This page covers how that works: the Stockport pick-up, the run to Manchester at an indicative 20-40 minutes and about 10 miles, the meet inside arrivals on the way back, and hourly hire in between. Stations at Cheadle Hulme, Bramhall and Hazel Grove are used for rail-then-road itineraries. Neighbouring coverage includes Manchester. Every vehicle class is quoted individually; the written quotation for Stockport confirms the price, what it includes and any applicable tax.

01Stockport at a glance

Chauffeur service in Stockport

Built on a gorge with a viaduct across the middle of it, Stockport is a town of steep brows and sudden one-way streets. The market and the Underbanks sit above the modern centre on a slope that surprises people arriving on foot. For a car, the practical map is the A6, the M60 and the relief road that opened along the southern edge in 2018.

That relief road, the A555, is the single most useful piece of local knowledge here. It gives Hazel Grove, Bramhall and Cheadle Hulme a run to Manchester Airport that avoids the ring road altogether. From the town centre the choice between the M60 and the A34 changes with the hour, and we make it on the day rather than in advance.

03The area

Where Stockport is wide, and where it is not

The practical version of Stockport: turnings, one-ways and the places a car can actually stop.

Two things dominate the driving. The first is gradient: the climb from Mersey Square up to the Market Place is short and steep, and the setts at the top are unforgiving. The second is junction 1 of the M60, where the motorway, the A6 and the town's own traffic all try to occupy the same space between seven and nine. South of the centre the suburbs are wide, leafy and easy, and the A555 runs across them like a bypass that was thirty years late but is genuinely good.

04Demand

A normal week in Stockport

Airports first, hourly work second, long runs third: roughly the order Stockport calls in.

Stepping Hill generates consultant and patient work through the week. The offices at Stockport Exchange beside the station have brought a visitor flow that did not exist a decade ago. Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme and Woodford are heavily residential and heavily travelled, so an early airport run from a driveway is the everyday booking. Add weddings at Bramall Hall, county cricket at the edge of the borough, and the theatre crowd at the Plaza, and the week fills out.

05Road time

The hours that matter in Stockport

The timing we would use if the booking out of Stockport were our own.

The airport is fifteen minutes from Bramhall by way of the A555 and thirty-five from the town centre in the peak. Wellington Road South queues from the college in both directions at school times, and the M60 anticlockwise from junction 1 is best avoided entirely between half seven and nine. Evening runs are easier. For an early flight from the SK7 and SK8 postcodes we tend to leave later than clients expect, because that relief road really does work.

06The kerb

Doors, boots and the Stockport pavement

Standing, waiting and loading around Davenport.

Stockport Exchange has a proper drop-off beside the station and it is the best pick-up point in the town by some distance. The Market Place is cobbled, on a slope, and carries loading restrictions that bite in the morning, so we collect from St Petersgate instead. Mersey Square is bus interchange and should be treated as such. In the residential south, driveways are usually the answer, and the driver will reverse in the night before if the road is narrow.

Collection notes for Stockport

  • 01Stockport Exchange, beside the station, is the cleanest collection point in town. The driver parks and meets you at the barrier.
  • 02The Market Place is cobbled and restricted in the morning. St Petersgate is the workable alternative a minute away.
  • 03For SK7 and SK8 addresses we use the A555 to the airport, which usually saves a quarter of an hour over the ring road.
  • 04Mersey Square is a bus interchange, not a set-down. We meet on Heaton Lane or in the station car park instead.

07Included as standard

Part of the price on every Stockport journey

  • 01

We watch the aircraft into Manchester

If the aircraft holds over the airfield for half an hour, the chauffeur stays put and the drive into Stockport starts later. Nothing on the written Stockport quotation moves because of it.

  • 02

Hand luggage, or eight cases from Stockport

Child seats take up boot space as well as needing fitting before the car reaches Stockport. Tell us the ages when you enquire from Stockport and the seat is in the car when it arrives, rather than in the boot beside your luggage.

  • 03

The car stays with you across Stockport

Two collections in Stockport on one run is ordinary: a house, then a colleague at Merseyway, then out to the airport. One car, one chauffeur, one figure covering the whole run from A6 Wellington Road to Manchester.

  • 04

A chauffeur who knows the Stockport kerb

Punctuality in Stockport means being in position before the booked time rather than at it. The chauffeur is standing on the street in Stockport with the engine off while you are still finding your passport.

  • 05

    Manchester arrivals, in person

Groups are met the same way, with one chauffeur per car and a single point to gather at inside Manchester before the run into Stockport. Four people and eight cases across two saloons into Stockport is usually calmer than everyone waiting at Manchester for one large vehicle.

  • 06

What sits inside the Stockport quotation

A price you have to ask for is only a price that moves if the answer changes with who is asking. It does not here: the same Stockport journey is quoted the same way for everybody, and the written quotation adds the specifics of your own run.

08Terminals

The airports Stockport uses

None of the figures below assume an empty road out of Stockport. They assume A6 Wellington Road behaves the way it usually behaves at the hour in question, which on a bad morning it will not. That gap is exactly why a Stockport collection time carries a margin.

Out of Stockport before A6 Wellington Road fills

Out of Stockport before A6 Wellington Road fills

We would rather sit outside your Stockport door for ten minutes than arrive at Manchester with none. The collection time on a Stockport booking is set with that bias, and it is why the drive itself is usually unremarkable.

The last thing the chauffeur does at Manchester is check that nothing loaded in Stockport is still in the boot. That sounds trivial until something has been left in it and you are two hundred miles from Stockport.

The board goes up before the Manchester doors begin producing passengers, and comes down when you are standing in front of it with Stockport ahead of you. None of that depends on you having a working phone between Manchester and Stockport.

A Stockport return booked at the same time as the outbound leg is the simplest version of this. Same chauffeur, same car, same door in Stockport, and one written price covering both halves of the trip.

  • A quiet cabin for the 10 miles back into Stockport
  • Aircraft tracked into Manchester from the tail number, so Stockport is reached on time
  • Chauffeur inside the Manchester arrivals hall with a board naming you and Stockport
  • Manchester car park found and paid for before the Stockport chauffeur walks in
Collections in Stockport, and how we set them up

Collections in Stockport, and how we set them up

Ten minutes early on A6 Wellington Road, engine off, boot unlocked. The chauffeur has already worked out whether A6 Wellington Road will let a car stand outside your door at that hour, or whether the answer is the side street behind Edgeley Park.

Leaving Stockport carries most of the variables. Once the car is past A6 Wellington Road the rest of the run is arithmetic, and the arithmetic was done before your collection time was set.

  • A second collection in Manchester priced into the same booking
  • Engine off and boot open before you reach the car in Stockport
  • Indicative 20-40 minutes from Stockport to Manchester, given once and then left alone
  • Pick-ups at Hazel Grove made on the side that tolerates a stationary car

The car is chosen against the run out of Stockport rather than against the occasion. The same Stockport booking to Manchester can want a saloon on Tuesday and an MPV on Friday because the number of cases changed and nothing else did.

Availability is confirmed when the Stockport booking is, not on a web page. What this page can tell you is which class suits which Stockport journey, and where each one sits against the others.

Keeping the car between appointments in Stockport

LF-05Keeping the car between appointments in Stockport

Keeping the car between appointments in Stockport

Between appointments the chauffeur finds somewhere legal to sit in Stockport and stays reachable. In Stockport that is sometimes directly outside and sometimes a street away on A555 airport relief road, and either way you are told which.

Waiting near Stockport Air Raid Shelters is not idle time from our side. The chauffeur is watching the clock, the traffic on A6 Wellington Road and your next address, so the car is moving before you have finished asking for it.

Cheadle Hulme, Bramhall and Hazel Grove, and the cars that meet them

The awkward part of arriving at Hazel Grove is not the walk. It is the walk with luggage, in the dark, into a Stockport taxi queue with eleven people already in it.

Where Hazel Grove has more than one entrance, the booking names which. In Stockport that single detail saves more time than any route decision the chauffeur makes afterwards.

What we need to know about your Stockport journey

What we need to know about your Stockport journey

We would rather have too much detail about the Stockport collection than too little. If the collection in Stockport is awkward — a gated entrance, a narrow turning off A6 Wellington Road, a building with two doors — say so, and the chauffeur is briefed before the day.

If the journey is unusual — a very early start from Stockport, a run to somewhere with no obvious address, an overnight wait — say so at the enquiry stage. Those are all ordinary Stockport work, and all easier to price honestly in advance.

17Answers

Stockport chauffeur questions

The questions Stockport bookings actually raise, answered without hedging.

Does the A555 really make Stockport quicker to the airport?

For the southern postcodes, yes, noticeably. From Bramhall or Hazel Grove it removes the M60 and the A34 crawl entirely and turns a thirty-five minute run into something closer to fifteen. From the town centre the advantage is smaller and we choose on the day.

Where can a car wait near Stockport station?

Stockport Exchange has a marked drop-off and short-stay right beside the platforms, and it is the easiest pick-up in the town. The old approach road is tight and gets blocked by the rank, so we avoid it where we can.

Can you collect from Bramall Hall for a wedding?

Yes. The driveway takes a saloon comfortably and there is a turning area near the house, though it fills with guest cars. We agree the collection point with the venue beforehand and hold in the park car park rather than blocking the drive.

Is Stockport town centre difficult for a large vehicle?

Parts of it are. The Underbanks and the Market Place are narrow, steep and cobbled, and an eight-seat van will not thank you for it. For those addresses we bring the vehicle to St Petersgate or Mersey Square and walk the last fifty yards with you.
