Rolls-Royce Ghost — summary

Rolls-Royce Ghost chauffeur hire from First Class Chauffeurs. The quieter Rolls-Royce. Coach doors that open backwards, a cabin that goes almost silent at speed, and none of the ceremony of the Phantom. It seats up to 3 passengers with 3 large cases and sits in the Suite class of this fleet. As-directed hire is booked in a block of hours with the car held for you between stops; airport transfers are quoted as a single fixed fare for the run. No standing price list. Send the journey on WhatsApp and the written quotation confirms the price, what it includes and any applicable tax. Booked across the United Kingdom, with airport arrivals met inside the terminal rather than telephoned from a car park.

The Ghost, plainly described

The Ghost is the Rolls-Royce for people who want the car rather than the event. It is shorter than a Phantom, plainer inside, and considerably easier to place at a hotel entrance, while keeping the two things that make a Rolls-Royce what it is: rear doors hinged at the back, and a cabin so quiet that at seventy miles an hour there is nothing much to listen to.

It is quoted identically to the Maybach. Between the two, the Ghost is the better car to arrive in and the Maybach the better car to travel a long way in, and that is genuinely the whole of the difference for most bookings.

Coach doors, and the way you get out

LF-01Coach doors, and the way you get out

Coach doors, and the way you get out

The rear doors are hinged at the back, which means the aperture opens towards the front of the car and you step out facing forwards rather than swinging your legs round and pushing up. In ordinary clothes it is a small convenience. In a long coat, a dress or anything that does not fold neatly, it is the difference between stepping out and clambering out.

The doors close under power from a control by the seat or from the chauffeur’s position, so nobody has to reach back and haul a heavy door shut. That sounds like a detail and is the single feature passengers comment on most after a first journey in one.

Inside, the rear bench is broad, upright and firm in the way a good armchair is firm. It seats three at a push and two properly. There is no reclining function of the sort the Maybach has, and the Ghost does not pretend otherwise.

LF-02The Ghost is the restrained one

The Ghost is the restrained one

Set beside a Phantom, the Ghost is shorter, lower and far less theatrical. It looks like an extremely well-made saloon rather than a state car, and a great many bookings are made specifically for that reason: the passenger wants a Rolls-Royce and does not want to arrive at a business address in something that stops the street.

The cabin follows the same logic. It is beautifully finished and comparatively plain, without the sense of occasion the Phantom manufactures the moment you sit down. Some people find that a relief and others find it a disappointment, and it is worth knowing which of the two you are before you book.

What it does not give away is refinement. Below about fifty miles an hour it is arguably the quietest car in this fleet, and the way it deals with a poor road surface is close to uncanny. You feel that the road was bad without feeling the road.

A Rolls-Royce at an airport, which is less odd than it sounds

LF-03A Rolls-Royce at an airport, which is less odd than it sounds

A Rolls-Royce at an airport, which is less odd than it sounds

Airport work in a Ghost is more common than people assume, and it splits into two kinds. The first is somebody arriving for an occasion that starts the moment they land, where the car is part of the day rather than the way to it. The second is a long domestic leg from a regional airport, where the quiet cabin does the work.

The mechanics do not change for the car. The flight is tracked, the chauffeur waits inside the terminal with a name board, and the luggage is loaded rather than carried. What changes is where the car waits: a Ghost does not sit in a tight short-stay bay for an hour, so the collection is planned around a designated pick-up point.

One practical note. Three large cases is the honest ceiling, so a Ghost is a poor choice for a family coming home from three weeks away, and a good one for two people arriving with an overnight bag each and somewhere to be at eight.

LF-04The booking that wants a Rolls-Royce without the Phantom

The booking that wants a Rolls-Royce without the Phantom

Weddings are the largest single use, and within that the Ghost is chosen by the couples who want the car in the photographs without the car dominating them. It also fits down more driveways and through more gateways than a Phantom, which matters at a country venue with a stone arch and a gravel turn.

Second come the evening bookings: dinners, openings, awards, the night of a premiere. A car that is quiet, easy to get out of and recognised without being shouted about is exactly what those evenings ask for, and the coach doors make the twelve feet between the kerb and the entrance considerably more dignified.

Third are the long private legs. Two people going to the coast or across to the west country on a Friday, where nothing about the day requires a Rolls-Royce and the journey is simply better in one. That is a legitimate reason to book a car and we will not pretend otherwise.

How the Ghost is driven, and how it is not

LF-05How the Ghost is driven, and how it is not

How the Ghost is driven, and how it is not

A Ghost is driven slowly in the last hundred metres and unhurriedly everywhere else. There is a great deal of power available and using any noticeable fraction of it wastes the point of the car; the whole design intent is that speed arrives without the passenger being told about it. A chauffeur builds pace gradually and sheds it earlier than in any other car here.

The suspension reads the road ahead and adjusts, which means it is at its best when the car is held at a steady speed on a settled line. Constant small corrections work against it. On a motorway that translates into picking a lane and staying in it rather than moving up and back through traffic.

The coach doors change the stop. They open into the space in front of the door rather than behind, so the car has to be brought up with room ahead of the rear door and a clear kerb, not simply squeezed into a gap. Getting that right is the difference between a graceful exit and an awkward one.

LF-06One class, three very different vehicles

One class, three very different vehicles

The Suite class puts the Ghost alongside the Maybach at the same figure, with the Jet Class below both. The Jet Class is the only one of the three that takes four people or five cases, so if either of those numbers describes your booking, the choice is already made.

Between the Ghost and the Maybach, quoted the same, the split is between arrival and journey. Coach doors, near silence at town speeds and a car people recognise on one side; a reclining seat, a footrest and two hours of genuine rest on the other. Neither is the better car in the abstract.

Above this class sits the Signature class, where the Phantom offers everything the Ghost does with considerably more ceremony and a longer body. That step is examined properly on the Phantom’s own page, and for a good number of bookings the Ghost is the more practical of the two.

06Capacity

Passengers, cases and the honest limit

Luggage is counted before passengers when a job is priced here, because a vehicle that is one case short at the kerb is a problem nobody can fix at the terminal.

What actually goes in a Ghost’s boot

LF-07What actually goes in a Ghost’s boot

What actually goes in a Ghost’s boot

Three large cases, and that is a firm three rather than an optimistic one. The boot is deep and well shaped, the lid is powered, and the loading lip is low enough that a heavy case goes in without a heave. What it is not is large in absolute terms, and there is no version of this car with more space.

For the journeys the Ghost is actually booked for, that is usually plenty. Two people with a case each and a garment bag laid flat covers most weddings, evenings and weekend runs. It becomes a problem on airport work with a full family load, and the answer there is a different vehicle rather than a roof box.

Anything long is out. A set of golf clubs will not go through the aperture, and skis are not a conversation worth having. If the booking involves either, the V-Class or the Defender takes them and the Ghost takes the people, which is a combination we quote reasonably often.

07Compared

Ghost or Phantom

The section most people actually want, written the way we would answer it on the telephone.

The Phantom sits a class above the Ghost and is quoted well above it, and it carries the same three passengers and three cases. Everything the extra buys is atmosphere and length: a bigger, more ceremonial car, a rear compartment with more theatre in it, and an arrival that genuinely stops people. For a wedding where the car is in every photograph, or an evening built around the arrival itself, that is worth paying for and the Ghost is the lesser choice. For almost everything else, the Ghost is the better booking. It has the same coach doors, the same near-silent cabin and the same badge, in a car that fits through a stone gateway, turns in a normal driveway and does not need the last two hundred metres surveyed in advance. If you want a Rolls-Royce rather than an occasion, the Ghost is the one to book, and the saving on a Heathrow run is considerable.

13Answers

Questions about the Ghost

Six things people ask before booking this one, answered without the marketing.

Does the Rolls-Royce Ghost have rear-hinged doors?

Yes. The rear doors are hinged at the back and close under power, so a passenger steps out forwards rather than swinging their legs round and pushing up out of the seat. It is the feature people notice first and comment on afterwards.

How is the Ghost different from the Phantom?

It is shorter, lower, plainer inside and considerably easier to place at an entrance or through a gateway. Both are near-silent and both have coach doors. The Phantom is the more ceremonial car and is quoted a class above.

Can a Rolls-Royce Ghost be booked for a wedding?

It is one of the most common reasons it is booked. It fits down more driveways than a Phantom and photographs well without dominating the frame. Tell us the venue in your enquiry so the approach and the turning space are checked in advance.

How many passengers does the Ghost carry?

Three at a push and two comfortably. The rear bench is broad and upright, with no reclining function of the sort the Maybach offers. For three adults on a long journey we would suggest the S-Class or the Jet Class instead.

Is the Ghost quiet enough to take a call in?

Below about fifty miles an hour it is arguably the quietest cabin in this fleet, and at motorway speed it stays very quiet. In practice a call works throughout the journey, which is not true of most cars once tyre noise takes over.

Will golf clubs or skis fit in a Ghost?

No. The boot takes three large cases and the aperture will not accept anything long and rigid. For those trips we would quote a V-Class or a Defender for the equipment, or simply put the whole booking in a vehicle that carries both.
