Lisburn sits on the M1 eight miles from Belfast, which puts both airports, the city centre and the road south all within half an hour of most addresses.

Chauffeur service in Lisburn — summary

Half past four in the morning is an ordinary start in Lisburn. That is what the first wave of departures out of Belfast City asks for, and an empty M1 is the closest thing to a predictable drive time anyone gets. We cover Lisburn and Belfast for airport transfers, private aviation runs, collections at Derriaghy and days held by the hour between Lisburn Cathedral and Market Square. Reckon on an indicative 20-35 minutes out of Lisburn to Belfast City, roughly 12 miles. Waiting from touchdown at Belfast City, the meet inside arrivals and tracking from the tail number are all part of the Lisburn transfer. No standing price list is published; the written quotation for Lisburn confirms the price.

01Setting out from Lisburn

Chauffeur service in Lisburn

Position is the thing here. The motorway runs along the northern edge of the city, the A1 to Newry and Dublin branches off nearby, and Belfast is a quarter of an hour up the road outside the peaks. That makes Lisburn one of the easiest places in Northern Ireland to start a journey from, whichever direction you are going.

The centre itself is compact, built around Market Square and the cathedral, with a modern shopping development beside it and a good deal of pedestrianisation. Around that the city spreads into large residential areas of post-war housing, and out towards Hillsborough and Moira the countryside starts almost immediately, which is why so many of the wedding and country house collections in this district begin here.

03The area

Driving Lisburn: the practical version

A working description of Lisburn, not a tourist one.

A tight historic core inside a much larger modern spread. Market Square, Bow Street and the streets around the cathedral are pedestrian or short-stay, with the shopping centre car parks taking most of the traffic. The ring of roads around the middle carries everything else. Residential areas out towards Lambeg, Derriaghy and Ballymacash are post-war and generous. Hillsborough, four miles south, is a village of Georgian streets with very limited parking.

04Demand

The shape of demand in Lisburn

Early flights, late returns and the days in between, out of Lisburn.

Commuters into Belfast make up a large share of the airport work, since a car from here to Aldergrove or Sydenham is a short and predictable run. Business travel from the Lisburn and Sprucefield commercial areas is steady. Hillsborough Castle brings events and visitors. And there is a good deal of cross-border traffic joining the A1 here for Newry and Dublin.

05Road time

Road time from Lisburn, honestly stated

The timing we would use if the booking out of Lisburn were our own.

The M1 into Belfast queues from half seven to nine and back again from four, with the Sprucefield and Stockman’s Lane sections the usual trouble. Locally the roads into the centre slow at school times. Sprucefield retail traffic fills the junction on Saturdays and through December. Events at Hillsborough Castle put concentrated traffic on the village roads, which have very little capacity to absorb it.

06The kerb

Finding the car in Lisburn

Handover notes for Lisburn, written by people who have stood there.

Lisburn station has a forecourt with a set-down, and it sits close enough to the centre to be walkable. The pedestrianised core cannot be driven, so collections happen from the surrounding streets or a shopping centre car park. Hillsborough village has narrow streets and limited parking, so we agree a meeting point rather than a house frontage. Business park units generally have visitor parking at the door.

Collection notes for Lisburn

  • 01Belfast International is around twenty miles north-west and Belfast City about twelve east, so we confirm which before the day.
  • 02The pedestrianised core cannot be driven; collections happen from the ring of streets or a shopping centre car park.
  • 03Hillsborough village has narrow Georgian streets with very little parking, so we agree a meeting point in advance.
  • 04Lisburn station has a workable forecourt with a set-down and is a short walk from the centre.
  • 05The A1 south starts from here, which makes Lisburn a practical joining point for a Dublin run.

07Included as standard

What comes with a car in the BT27 district

  • 01

Where the chauffeur stands at Belfast City

A board with your name on it, held by the chauffeur who will drive you to Lisburn. If the flight into Belfast City is two hours late the board is still there two hours later, because the chauffeur left Lisburn on the aircraft rather than on the schedule.

  • 02

Priced before the car sets off for Lisburn

Nothing is metered on the way to Belfast City. The run from Lisburn costs what the quotation says it costs, whether the traffic on M1 is kind that morning or not.

  • 03

What the boot takes on a Belfast City run

Tell us how many cases are leaving Lisburn and we allocate a car that takes them with the seats still usable. Four people and four large cases out of Lisburn is a V-Class job, not a saloon one, and we would rather say so before the day.

  • 04

The clock moves, the Lisburn price does not

We reschedule the Belfast City pick-up ourselves when the aircraft slips, and the car simply leaves Lisburn later. What you agreed in writing before you left Lisburn is what you pay when you get back to it.

  • 05

    Holding the car in Lisburn

Overnight waits and very early releases are normal Lisburn work. Both are easier to price honestly in advance than at two in the morning on M1, so put them in the enquiry.

  • 06

The same chauffeur, Lisburn to Belfast City

You get the same person for the whole journey out of Lisburn, in a suit, who opens the door, loads the boot and says very little unless you start the conversation.

08Terminals

Getting from Lisburn to a gate

Every figure below is indicative and measured from a Lisburn door to the terminal, which is the number that matters when you are deciding what time to be ready. It assumes M1 is moving normally. On a bad morning it will not be, which is why the collection time on a Lisburn confirmation is usually earlier than the arithmetic suggests.

Departures from Lisburn, and what time to be ready

LF-01Departures from Lisburn, and what time to be ready

Departures from Lisburn, and what time to be ready

We would rather sit outside your Lisburn door for ten minutes than arrive at Belfast City with none. The collection time on a Lisburn booking is set with that bias, and it is why the drive itself is usually unremarkable.

Return legs into Lisburn get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Belfast City and drives you back to the same door in Lisburn.

Getting into the car on M1

LF-02Getting into the car on M1

Getting into the car on M1

The car arrives before the time on your confirmation and parks where it is legal to stand, which near Lisburn Cathedral is not always outside the door. The chauffeur sends one short message naming where in Lisburn the car is standing, and then waits. You are not being timed, and nothing on the Lisburn booking starts running.

Where a second passenger joins in Belfast, that stop is already on the booking and the chauffeur has the address. Nobody is telephoning anybody from a Lisburn kerb to ask where they have got to.

  • Collections from Lagan Valley Hospital arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
  • The car holds on A1 when the kerb outside your door will not take it
  • Cases carried from the door in Lisburn rather than watched
  • Chauffeur briefed on the Lisburn address before the car sets off
Reaching Belfast City at one in the morning

LF-03Reaching Belfast City at one in the morning

Reaching Belfast City at one in the morning

Immigration queues at Belfast City are the wildcard nobody can price into a Lisburn booking. They are also why waiting runs from touchdown rather than from a scheduled landing, so a slow hall at Belfast City costs a Lisburn booking nothing at all.

Late arrivals into Belfast City get the same standard as morning ones, and the same drive into the BT27 district. Nothing reduces after midnight, and the drive into Lisburn is planned with the same care whether or not anyone is awake at the far end.

  • Late landings still end with the cases at your door in Lisburn
  • Return route into Lisburn chosen at the airport exit rather than in advance
  • A second drop in Belfast priced into the same booking
  • Trains into Derriaghy watched the same way as flights

Saloon or MPV out of Lisburn is usually a luggage question rather than a comfort one. The boot of a saloon takes two large cases with three people aboard; beyond that the V-Class earns its keep on any run out of Lisburn.

The classes below are the ones sent to Lisburn, and each is quoted on the journey rather than read off a table. The written quotation for a Lisburn booking names the vehicle and the price together.

The last mile from Derriaghy

LF-05The last mile from Derriaghy

The last mile from Derriaghy

The awkward part of arriving at Derriaghy is not the walk. It is the walk with luggage, in the dark, into a Lisburn taxi queue with eleven people already in it.

Rail into Lisburn and a car onward to Belfast City is a common shape, and it is one booking rather than two. The chauffeur holds the Derriaghy train number and the Belfast City flight number together.

As-directed work from Lisburn

As-directed work from Lisburn

Days built round Lisburn tend to sprawl. Hourly hire absorbs that: the chauffeur waits near Lisburn Cathedral, the boot holds whatever you are carrying, and you stop planning the transport between the things you are actually doing.

Waiting near Lisburn Cathedral is not idle time from our side. The chauffeur is watching the clock, the traffic on M1 and your next address, so the car is moving before you have finished asking for it.

17Answers

Lisburn chauffeur questions

The questions Lisburn bookings actually raise, answered without hedging.

How far is Lisburn from Belfast International Airport?

Around twenty miles and typically half an hour to forty minutes, taking the M1 and then the A26 or the motorway north. Belfast City is closer at about twelve miles and twenty to thirty minutes through the city. Both are comfortable runs from here, which is one of the reasons Lisburn suits people who fly regularly.

Can you provide cars for an event at Hillsborough Castle?

Yes, and the village is the part that needs planning rather than the castle. Hillsborough has narrow Georgian streets and very limited parking, so on an event day the roads fill and a car cannot simply wait outside. We agree a set-down at the gate and hold the vehicle at an arranged point until you are ready to leave.

Is Lisburn a sensible place to join the A1 for Dublin?

It is a natural starting point. The A1 branches off the M1 just south of the city, and from there it is dual carriageway almost the whole way to the border and on to the M1 south. Dublin is around ninety miles and generally under two hours, which makes it a shorter run than a lot of people expect.

Do you collect from Sprucefield and the business parks?

Regularly. Most units there have visitor parking at the front, so the car can wait at the door rather than at a barrier, and the junction gives quick access to both the M1 and the A1. The one thing to allow for is Saturday and December retail traffic, which fills the junction and slows everything around it.
