Chauffeur service in Downpatrick and the Lecale

Downpatrick has a cathedral on a hill, a racecourse below it and a heritage railway that goes a short and enjoyable distance in the wrong direction for a flight.

Chauffeur service in Downpatrick — summary

Collections from Downe Hospital and Downpatrick Racecourse make up a good share of the Downpatrick diary, alongside private addresses and the odd early start from Lanyon Place. The pattern is consistent: out of Downpatrick to Belfast City on an indicative 45-70 minutes covering about 25 miles, back from it met at the barrier, and hourly hire that keeps your coat and your papers in the cabin while you are inside. Chauffeurs know A22, A7 and A25 well enough to choose between them on the morning rather than on the map. The fleet runs from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and all of it is driven in Downpatrick. Nothing is published as a price list; the figure is confirmed in writing for your Downpatrick journey.

01The Downpatrick basics

Chauffeur service in Downpatrick

The town sits on rising ground above the Quoile marshes in the Lecale, the flat green country between Strangford Lough and the Irish Sea. Down Cathedral occupies the summit of the hill, with the older streets falling away from it towards the market place and the newer housing spreading out beyond that onto easier ground.

There is no scheduled rail service here. The Downpatrick and County Down Railway is a preserved line and a good day out, but it is not a way of getting to Belfast, so every journey from this town starts and ends by road. Belfast is around twenty-three miles north on the A7.

03The area

The ground plan of Downpatrick

What a chauffeur learns by the third collection in Downpatrick.

A hill town looking out over marsh and water. English Street and the streets around the cathedral are narrow and climb steeply, with limited parking and a good deal of pedestrian movement. Down below, the market area and the newer roads are more generous. Out of town the Lecale roads run flat and straight across the marshes towards Strangford and Ardglass, and the ferry at Strangford is the short way to the Ards peninsula.

04Demand

Downpatrick bookings, by type

Where the work comes from around Inch Abbey, and what it asks for.

Down Cathedral and the St Patrick sites bring visitors throughout the season. Downe Hospital serves the district. Racing at Downpatrick produces its own days, a small course with a loyal following. And there is steady airport and long-distance work, because from here every terminal is an hour or more and driving yourself means leaving a car somewhere for a fortnight.

05Road time

Getting the departure time right in Downpatrick

Departure planning for Downpatrick, without the optimism.

The A7 to Belfast is a good road and rarely a problem outside the morning peak on its approach to the city. Race days fill the roads around the course. The Strangford ferry runs to a timetable and queues on summer weekends. In the town, English Street and the cathedral approaches are busy at school times and during services. Otherwise this is a quiet place to drive.

06The kerb

The last two hundred yards in Downpatrick

Why a Downpatrick pick-up is described by kerb rather than by postcode.

The market area car parks are the practical waiting places, since the streets up to the cathedral are narrow and steep. Down Cathedral has a set-down at the gates. Downe Hospital has a drop-off at the main entrance. The racecourse has its own parking and a gate arrangement on race days. Out at Strangford the ferry slip has a small waiting area, and Ardglass harbour has room to turn.

Collection notes for Downpatrick

  • 01The Downpatrick and County Down Railway is a heritage line, not a scheduled service, so every journey from here begins by road.
  • 02Belfast City is around twenty-five miles north and International closer to forty, so we confirm which is needed.
  • 03The streets up to the cathedral are steep and narrow; we set down at the gates and wait in the market car parks.
  • 04The Strangford ferry runs to a timetable and queues on summer weekends, so we plan around the sailings.
  • 05Race days at Downpatrick fill the roads around the course, and we agree a gate for the return.

07Included as standard

Six things every Downpatrick booking carries

  • 01

    Practised at the Downpatrick handover

The chauffeur arrives early, finds the legal stopping point nearest your Downpatrick door, and waits there. In Downpatrick that is sometimes obvious and sometimes it is fifty yards round the corner on A7.

  • 02

One price for the whole Downpatrick journey

Sizing a Downpatrick job takes one message. If a Downpatrick booking looks like an E-Class and a single transfer to Belfast City, say so and the figure comes straight back.

  • 03

Belfast City to Downpatrick, door to door

Where the flight into Belfast City lands early, the car has already left Downpatrick and is waiting. Where it lands two hours late, the Belfast City board is still up and the Downpatrick run is unchanged. That costs us time and costs you nothing, because the waiting sits inside the Downpatrick transfer rather than beside it.

  • 04

The aircraft, not the timetable, into Belfast City

A diversion away from Belfast City is the awkward case for a Downpatrick booking. If the flight comes down somewhere other than Belfast City, tell us where and the car leaves Downpatrick for that airport instead, requoted in writing rather than argued about over the phone.

  • 05

What goes in the boot before A22

Boot space is quoted honestly against the number of passengers leaving Downpatrick. A full E-Class boot with three adults aboard is not the same as an empty one leaving Downpatrick for Belfast City, and the written quotation reflects that.

  • 06

Waiting, drop-offs and stops in Downpatrick

If the plan changes halfway across Downpatrick the chauffeur simply drives where you ask, and we requote in writing afterwards. Nothing is added to the Downpatrick price without you seeing it first.

08Terminals

Downpatrick to the airports

These are timed from a Downpatrick door to the terminal, because that is the number you can plan against. The walk to the car in Downpatrick, the queue at the Belfast City drop-off and the walk to the desk all sit outside it. The written quotation for Downpatrick puts them back in.

What a chauffeur does in Downpatrick

Matching the car to the Downpatrick run

LF-01Matching the car to the Downpatrick run

Matching the car to the Downpatrick run

Ask about luggage out of Downpatrick before comfort. Two people and two cases out of Downpatrick is a saloon question; four people and four cases is not, and that is the one mistake which cannot be fixed at the kerb.

Long-distance work from Downpatrick is where the cabin justifies itself. Four hours out of Downpatrick in the right car is uneventful. The same four hours in the wrong one is a long afternoon out of Downpatrick.

Check-in, drop-off and the 45-70 minutes between

LF-02Check-in, drop-off and the 45-70 minutes between

Check-in, drop-off and the 45-70 minutes between

Long-haul out of Belfast City means an earlier desk, more luggage and a longer walk, all of it paid for at the Downpatrick end. All three change the collection time in Downpatrick, and all three appear on the quotation rather than being assumed.

Drop-off lanes at Belfast City are short-stay by design, so the goodbye happens at that kerb rather than the one in Downpatrick. If you would rather have longer, we park properly at Belfast City and walk in with you, and the Downpatrick quotation allows for it.

Coming home to Downpatrick

LF-03Coming home to Downpatrick

Coming home to Downpatrick

Coming into Belfast City off a night flight, with Downpatrick still to reach, is when the difference shows. You are tired, the Belfast City hall is long, Downpatrick is still to come, and the useful thing is not a discount but somebody taking the trolley off you.

The route into Downpatrick is chosen at the airport exit and not before it. What A22 is doing at that moment is knowable; what it was doing when the booking was made is not.

  • Waiting from touchdown at Belfast City built into the Downpatrick transfer
  • Bags taken from the Belfast City trolley to the boot and on to Downpatrick
  • A diversion away from Belfast City requoted for Downpatrick in writing, not argued about
  • Late landings still end with the cases at your door in Downpatrick

11Longer bookings

Holding a car across Downpatrick

The start of a Downpatrick journey

LF-04The start of a Downpatrick journey

The start of a Downpatrick journey

A collection in Downpatrick starts with the chauffeur finding the stopping point rather than the address. On A22 that can mean the loading bay fifty yards down, or the side street behind Quoile Pondage, and the message you get names the spot in plain English.

What happens after that on A22 is deliberately unremarkable. Water in the door, a charger that fits your phone, a cabin at whatever temperature you ask for, and a chauffeur who says nothing between Downpatrick and the motorway unless you begin.

  • Gated entrances and courtyards in Downpatrick checked in advance
  • A second collection in Newtownards priced into the same booking
  • Engine off and boot open before you reach the car in Downpatrick

Rail, then road, into Downpatrick

Rail, then road, into Downpatrick

Where the itinerary is a flight into Belfast City, then a train into Lanyon Place, then a car, all three legs get watched. The last one starts at Lanyon Place and finishes at a door in Downpatrick, at a price fixed before you set out.

Luggage is the reason most people book a car at Lanyon Place. Two large cases across the Lanyon Place concourse is unpleasant; the same two cases handed to a chauffeur at the barrier is not a problem at all.

17Answers

Downpatrick chauffeur questions

Short answers about Downpatrick, with no hedging in them.

Can I get a train from Downpatrick to Belfast?

Not a scheduled one. The Downpatrick and County Down Railway is a preserved line running a short distance towards Inch Abbey, and it is a genuinely good afternoon out, but it is not transport. The scheduled network does not reach this part of County Down at all, so the whole journey to Belfast or an airport is by road.

How long does it take to reach Belfast from Downpatrick?

Around twenty-three miles on the A7 and typically forty to sixty minutes. It is a decent road through Ballynahinch and Carryduff, with the approach into the city the only part that regularly slows. For a flight from the City Airport we would allow an hour and a half door to terminal, and rather more for Aldergrove.

Do you use the Strangford ferry for journeys north?

When it suits the destination. Crossing to Portaferry and driving up the Ards peninsula is often quicker than going round the head of Strangford Lough, and the crossing itself takes about ten minutes. It runs to a timetable and can queue in summer, so we check the sailings before committing rather than joining the line and hoping.

What is there to see around Downpatrick for a day with a car?

A good deal within twenty minutes. The cathedral and the Saint Patrick Centre are in the town, Inch Abbey is just across the river, and Strangford, Ardglass and the Lecale coast are all short drives. Castle Ward sits by the lough near Strangford with its own parking, which makes it an easy stop on the way through.
