Chauffeur service in Roehampton — summary

First Class Chauffeurs drives Roehampton in West London, and most of the work here is the ground half of a longer journey: the run out to Heathrow before a flight, the car waiting when one lands, and days held by the hour between Roehampton Lane and Priory Lane. Collections are made from private addresses, from Richmond Park Golf Course, and from the taxi rank side of Wandsworth Town rather than the drop-off lane. Heathrow is an indicative 30-50 minutes from Roehampton, about 12 miles by road, using A3 at Robin Hood roundabout. Vehicles run from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class up to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, whichever Roehampton address the car is going to. Every class is quoted individually; the written quotation for Roehampton confirms the final price, what it covers and any applicable tax.

01The Roehampton summary

Chauffeur service in Roehampton

Roehampton Lane runs the length of the district, from the Upper Richmond Road up to Roehampton Gate, and nearly everything sits on it or a few metres off it. The university colleges are spread along the western side, Queen Mary’s Hospital is halfway up, and the Alton estate climbs the hill behind. One road, several very different destinations.

The A3 at the southern end gives a fast run down to the M25 and Gatwick, and a slower one north into town. Heathrow goes the other way, through Barnes and Chiswick or out on the A316. Richmond Park’s Roehampton Gate is a useful shortcut in daylight and no use whatever once the gates have closed for the night.

03The area

Roehampton on the ground

A working description of Roehampton, not a tourist one.

Roehampton Lane is two lanes carrying a bus route, a hospital entrance, a university crossing and a run of speed tables, which is a great deal for one road. Clarence Lane and Priory Lane lead off into quieter, greener territory with the golf clubs and the Priory. The Alton estate’s roads are wide but disorientating, and several blocks are reached only on foot from a parking court.

04Demand

What Roehampton needs a chauffeur for

Early flights, late returns and the days in between, out of Roehampton.

Three distinct threads run through the diary. The university generates term-start and term-end journeys with heavy luggage, plus airport runs for international students and visiting academics. Queen Mary’s Hospital brings appointment and discharge work through the day. And the large houses on Priory Lane and around the village book the usual private mixture of departures and days out.

05Road time

Peak, off-peak and A3 at Robin Hood roundabout

The difference between 30-50 minutes and the same drive out of Roehampton at eight in the morning.

Roehampton Lane is slow from 08:00 to 09:15, chiefly because of the schools and the hospital, and again from 15:30. The A3 at the Robin Hood roundabout backs up towards Putney in the evening. Journeys south are quick outside those hours: the M25 at Junction 10 is around twenty minutes away on a clear road, which makes Gatwick more manageable here than from most of our west London coverage.

06The kerb

Finding the car in Roehampton

Standing, waiting and loading around Roehampton Gate, Richmond Park.

The hospital has a car park where the chauffeur can wait and walk in, far better than stopping on Roehampton Lane, which has no waiting near the entrance. University collections are made at the college gate rather than the halls, since several colleges have barriers. On the Alton estate we agree a parking court by name, because block numbers are not readable from the road. Priory Lane addresses have their own drives.

Collection notes for Roehampton

  • 01Queen Mary’s Hospital has a car park, so the chauffeur waits there and walks to the department rather than stopping on Roehampton Lane.
  • 02University collections are made at the named college gate; the halls sit behind barriers and are not reachable by car.
  • 03On the Alton estate we agree a parking court by name, since block numbers cannot be read from the road.
  • 04Roehampton Gate closes at dusk, so evening journeys are planned round the outside of Richmond Park.

07Included as standard

Included as standard in Roehampton, not as an upgrade

  • 01

From wheels-up to the Roehampton kerb

We reschedule the Heathrow pick-up ourselves when the aircraft slips, and the car simply leaves Roehampton later. What you agreed in writing before you left Roehampton is what you pay when you get back to it.

  • 02

Hand luggage, or eight cases from Roehampton

Golf bags out of Roehampton are the classic miscount. Four sets of clubs and four passengers out of Roehampton does not go in a saloon, and it is a cheap thing to establish in advance.

  • 03

The car stays with you across Roehampton

The chauffeur waits wherever Roehampton allows it, which is not always within sight of the door. You get one message naming the spot in Roehampton, and the car is at the kerb by the time you reach it.

  • 04

Knows the loading bays around Roehampton Lane

Knowing Roehampton from the driver's seat is a different thing from knowing it from a map. In Roehampton it means knowing that the obvious turning off A3 at Robin Hood roundabout is banned between certain hours and the unobvious one is not.

  • 05

The walk out of Heathrow, with help

A board with your name on it, held by the chauffeur who will drive you to Roehampton. If the flight into Heathrow is two hours late the board is still there two hours later, because the chauffeur left Roehampton on the aircraft rather than on the schedule.

  • 06

    Nothing added after Heathrow

The figure quoted for Roehampton covers the drive, the waiting and the meet. It is confirmed in writing, so there is nothing to argue about on a Roehampton doorstep at the end of a long day.

Most missed flights out of Heathrow are lost somewhere in the SW15 district rather than in the air. Out of Roehampton the ground problem is A3 at Robin Hood roundabout between about seven and half past nine, and the answer is leaving before it rather than driving harder through it.

Where somebody is staying behind, the car carries on afterwards: back into Roehampton, on to Richmond, or held for a later collection. It remains one Roehampton booking and one price either way.

Finding each other on A3 at Robin Hood roundabout

Finding each other on A3 at Robin Hood roundabout

Ten minutes early on A3 at Robin Hood roundabout, engine off, boot unlocked. The chauffeur has already worked out whether A3 at Robin Hood roundabout will let a car stand outside your door at that hour, or whether the answer is the side street behind Priory Lane.

The route out of Roehampton is chosen for the hour rather than for the map. Sometimes that means the long way round past Priory Lane, and the chauffeur takes it without announcing how clever it was.

  • Collections from Richmond Park Golf Course arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
  • The car holds on Roehampton Lane (A306) when the kerb outside your door will not take it

Meeting a flight into Heathrow properly

A proper meet at Heathrow begins while you are still in the air and the car is still in Roehampton. We watch the aircraft, adjust for the actual landing time rather than the printed one, and the chauffeur leaves Roehampton in time to be inside the Heathrow hall with a name board when the doors open.

A stop on the way in is easy to arrange: someone dropped in Putney, a detour past Richmond Park Golf Course, or a supermarket before you reach an empty fridge. Put it on the Roehampton booking and it appears in the price.

  • Chauffeur inside the Heathrow arrivals hall with a board naming you and Roehampton
  • Heathrow car park found and paid for before the Roehampton chauffeur walks in
  • Indicative 30-50 minutes back into Roehampton
  • Waiting from touchdown at Heathrow built into the Roehampton transfer

MPVs leaving Roehampton earn their keep on luggage rather than passengers. Three adults with real suitcases out of Roehampton is a V-Class booking, even though three adults on their own would sit in a saloon perfectly happily.

Child seats, extra luggage, skis and golf bags all change the answer for a Roehampton booking. Tell us what is going in the boot when you enquire from Roehampton and we will name the class that takes it rather than the one that nearly does.

The awkward part of arriving at Wandsworth Town is not the walk. It is the walk with luggage, in the dark, into a Roehampton taxi queue with eleven people already in it.

Rail into Roehampton and a car onward to Heathrow is a common shape, and it is one booking rather than two. The chauffeur holds the Wandsworth Town train number and the Heathrow flight number together.

Keeping the car between appointments in Roehampton

Visiting Roehampton for a day from elsewhere is the classic case: train into Wandsworth Town, car waiting on the right side of the station, four hours of moving about, then back to the platform with a margin.

The chauffeur will ask for a mobile number and then use it about once per stop, which is the right amount of communication for a day spent moving around Roehampton.

17Answers

Roehampton chauffeur questions

Answered for Roehampton rather than for chauffeur hire in general.

Can you collect students from the University of Roehampton at the end of term?

Yes, and it is one of the busier weeks in the local calendar. Tell us the college and the number of cases; four students with eight bags needs a van-bodied vehicle, and the pick-up happens at the college gate rather than outside the halls.

Is there anywhere to wait at Queen Mary’s Hospital?

There is a car park on site, which the chauffeur uses so that he can meet you inside at the department door. Roehampton Lane has no waiting near the entrance, and a car standing there gets moved on quickly.

Does Roehampton Gate stay open into the evening?

Not reliably. Most Richmond Park vehicle gates close at dusk, so a route that used the park on the way out may not be available on the way back. We plan evening returns round the outside as a matter of course.

How long is Roehampton to Gatwick?

Fifty to ninety minutes for around twenty-eight miles, down the A3 to the M25 and round to the M23. The A3 south of the Robin Hood roundabout is the section that decides it, and after four in the afternoon it decides badly.
