Chauffeur hire in Rochdale and the OL postcodes

Most of what happens here is decided by the M62, and the M62 above Rochdale is the highest and least predictable motorway in England.

Chauffeur service in Rochdale — summary

Chauffeur service in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, booked mainly for airport runs, hourly hire and long-distance driving. The car is held where it can legally stand near the uncovered River Roch, the chauffeur walks in to meet you, and the boot is loaded before you reach the kerb. From here Manchester is an indicative 40-65 minutes, roughly 28 miles on A58; A664 carries the return. Regular collection points include the stadium at Spotland, Touchstones and Mills Hill, and the same standard of welcome applies whether the pick-up is a house in Rochdale or a hotel forecourt. No standing price list is published, and a written quotation confirms the price for your journey out of Rochdale.

01Rochdale, up front

Chauffeur service in Rochdale

The town has one of the finest Victorian town halls in the country and a river that was buried under a road for eighty years and then uncovered again. The centre is small, walkable and now has tram track running through the middle of it, which changes where a car can legally pause. Most of the borough, though, is the valleys running up toward the moor.

Airport work from here goes south on the M62 and M60, about twenty-eight miles, and the honest figure is forty minutes at six in the morning and an hour and more at eight. Leeds Bradford is a genuine alternative for some routes, forty miles east over the top, provided the weather on the summit is behaving itself.

03The area

A58, and everything that hangs off it

Written from the driver's side of the windscreen, about Rochdale rather than about the guidebook.

Rochdale drives on two levels. Down in the valley the A58 and A664 carry the traffic, the tram runs on street through the centre, and the one-way system around the town hall takes a moment to learn. Up on the tops, Blackstone Edge and the road across to Littleborough are exposed and get closed for snow and for wind. Hollingworth Lake sits between the two and fills its lanes with parked cars every sunny weekend. The M62 summit near Windy Hill is the highest point of any motorway in England, and it behaves accordingly.

04Demand

Who takes a car from the OL11 district

From Mills Hill to Manchester: the runs that repeat.

Kingsway Business Park has brought distribution and manufacturing to the eastern edge, with visiting managers who fly in and out of Manchester. Rochdale Infirmary handles a steady flow of appointments. Weddings at the halls up the valleys run all summer. There is also a strong strand of family travel where the practical need is a van with proper luggage space rather than a saloon, and a driver who will do a five in the morning start without complaint.

05Road time

The Rochdale clock

Traffic in Rochdale is predictable if you know the hour. This is the hour A58 turns on.

Westbound on the M62 in the morning is the problem, and it starts before seven. Junction 20 and the A627(M) queue in both directions at peak, and the merge onto the M60 at Simister is the pinch point for anyone heading to the airport. Over the tops toward Yorkshire the issue is weather rather than volume: fog and crosswind on the summit, and gates that close the moor roads first. We check the summit forecast for anything crossing to Leeds in winter.

06The kerb

The pick-up point on A58

Why a Rochdale pick-up is described by kerb rather than by postcode.

The tram track through the town centre has taken away much of the old kerb space, so collections happen at the interchange or on the ring road side. Number One Riverside has a set-down that works outside office start and finish times. The station sits a little way from the centre with its own car park, which is the easiest place to meet a train. Around Hollingworth Lake on a summer weekend there is no parking at all, and we agree a point up the hill rather than at the water.

Collection notes for Rochdale

  • 01Town centre kerb space is limited by the tram track. The interchange or the ring road side of Number One Riverside are the workable points.
  • 02Rochdale station has its own car park a short walk from the platforms, which is the simplest place to meet an arriving train.
  • 03Hollingworth Lake has no spare parking on a fine weekend, so we agree a collection point on the approach road instead.
  • 04For winter crossings to Yorkshire we check the M62 summit before setting off and will route by the M60 and M61 if it is shut.

07Included as standard

What you get when you book from Rochdale

  • 01

The car sized to the cases, not to Rochdale

Awkward items are worth naming: a cello, a wheelchair, a set of display boards for a stand at Touchstones. None of them are a problem, and all of them change which car we send to Rochdale.

  • 02

Rescheduled without a call from Manchester

The tail number is watched from departure, so a diversion or a two-hour hold changes when we leave Rochdale for Manchester and not what you booked. The same applies to a train into Mills Hill when rail is doing the middle of the journey.

  • 03

Met before you reach the Manchester kerb

After a long flight the last thing worth doing is negotiating the Manchester short-stay barrier with Rochdale still ahead of you. The chauffeur handles the Manchester end of it and you are pointed at A58 within a few minutes of clearing customs.

  • 04

Local enough to park in Rochdale

Nothing about the driving out of Rochdale should be memorable. Steady on A58, no hurry, no phone, and an arrival at Manchester that matches the time you were given when you booked.

  • 05

The figure agreed before you left Rochdale

The airport columns on the card are the published London reference fares rather than Rochdale ones. A run from Rochdale to Manchester is priced against its own 28 miles, and the quotation says as much.

  • 06

School gates and pharmacies in Rochdale

At a wedding or an event in Rochdale the car is usually wanted at both ends of the day rather than continuously. We quote that as one held Rochdale booking, not two jobs with a gap you end up paying for twice.

Manchester, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool John Lennon are all driven from Rochdale. Which one your booking uses is usually decided by the airline rather than by the map, so send the flight number and we will quote a Rochdale collection against the right terminal.

Coming home to Rochdale

LF-01Coming home to Rochdale

Coming home to Rochdale

In the forty minutes before you land, the chauffeur has already left Rochdale and is at Manchester. The car goes into the Manchester car park, the parking is paid, and the walk to the arrivals barrier is timed so the board is up before the first passengers bound for Rochdale come through. None of that is your problem, but it is the reason the Manchester meet works and Rochdale is reached on time.

When your flight lands into Manchester alongside three others, the exit roads towards Rochdale take all of it at the same moment. The chauffeur waits ten minutes instead of joining that, and you still reach Rochdale sooner.

  • A diversion away from Manchester requoted for Rochdale in writing, not argued about
  • Late landings still end with the cases at your door in Rochdale
  • Return route into Rochdale chosen at the airport exit rather than in advance
  • A second drop in Oldham priced into the same booking
Timing a flight from Rochdale

Timing a flight from Rochdale

Getting out of Rochdale cleanly depends on A58. On a good morning the car is past A58 in minutes; on a bad one it is the whole problem, and the chauffeur will have chosen the alternative before you get in.

A run of 28 miles out of Rochdale is not long enough to need a break and long enough that the cabin matters. Water, quiet and a temperature you chose is the whole specification between Rochdale and the terminal.

A pick-up near Mills Hill has rules of its own, because station kerbs are enforced properly and a rank is not a waiting bay. We use the side of Mills Hill that tolerates a stationary car, and you are told which side that is.

The boot closes, the door closes, and the car is moving out of Rochdale. Where the run is to Manchester the chauffeur has already chosen between A58 and A664 for that hour and will not be reconsidering it at the first junction.

  • A written price agreed before the car is allocated to Rochdale
  • Chauffeur, vehicle and registration on the Rochdale confirmation before the day
  • Car in position ahead of the booked time, parked legally near the uncovered River Roch
  • One message naming exactly where the car is standing in Rochdale

From four hours to a full Rochdale day

A car held for the day in Rochdale

As-directed work starts wherever you want it to start — a house in Rochdale, the stadium at Spotland, or Mills Hill off a train — and runs until you release the car. In between the chauffeur finds somewhere legal to wait in Rochdale and stays contactable.

Most hourly bookings in Rochdale start as something smaller. A transfer becomes a transfer plus a wait, then plus a second Rochdale address, and at that point holding the car is simpler and usually cheaper.

Rail, then road, into Rochdale

LF-05Rail, then road, into Rochdale

Rail, then road, into Rochdale

Business travel in and out of Rochdale often runs rail for the distance and car for the ends. It is quicker than driving the whole way, and a good deal less trouble than parking in Rochdale at the end of it.

Short connections at Mills Hill are worth flagging. If you have twenty minutes between arriving at Mills Hill and being somewhere in Rochdale, we will say honestly whether A58 makes that realistic.

Cabin class covers the everyday work: the E-Class does the 40-65 minutes from Rochdale to Manchester as capably as anything else in the fleet, and the rear seat is a perfectly good place to spend it.

For a run out of Rochdale to Manchester with two cabin bags, the cheapest class on the card is the correct one. We are not going to pretend otherwise to move a Rochdale booking up a line.

Luggage is the detail left out most often, and the one most likely to change which car reaches Rochdale. Two cabin bags from Rochdale and four large cases are different bookings even on an identical route.

Where a flight into Manchester moves after the Rochdale booking is confirmed, send us the new number rather than the new time. We take the terminal and the landing from it and adjust the Rochdale collection ourselves.

17Answers

Rochdale chauffeur questions

Answers about Rochdale, not general ones. If yours is missing, ask about your own address on A58.

How reliable is the M62 over the Pennines in winter?

Less than people assume. The summit near Windy Hill is the highest motorway in England and it collects fog, crosswind and snow that the valleys never see. For a flight from Leeds Bradford in bad weather we leave earlier or route the long way round, and we tell you which before the day.

Where does a car wait in Rochdale town centre?

The tram track has removed most of the old kerb, so the interchange and the ring road side of Number One Riverside are the two that work. On the streets around the town hall the loading restrictions are enforced and there is nowhere sensible to sit.

Do you carry families with a lot of luggage from Rochdale?

Regularly. Where four people are travelling with four full cases a saloon simply will not do it, so we quote a van with proper boot space instead. Far better to settle that at the booking than to discover it on the driveway at five in the morning.

Is Leeds Bradford a sensible airport from Rochdale?

For some routes, yes. It is about forty miles east and the drive is straightforward when the M62 is clear. Manchester is nearer, has far more destinations and is the default, but we will price both if your flight only leaves from one of them.
