Chauffeur service in Preston — summary

A chauffeur service for Preston, working the part of a journey either side of the flight. Cars collect from addresses across Preston in PR1, PR2, PR3, PR4 and PR5, from Royal Preston Hospital, the University of Central Lancashire and Preston Guild Hall, and from Preston when a train is the first leg. The drive to Manchester is an indicative 55-85 minutes over about 45 miles, and M55 is the route that usually decides how long it takes. Arrivals at Manchester are met inside the terminal at the barrier, then driven into Preston. The fleet runs from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and the Preston price is confirmed in writing before you travel.

01Preston first

Chauffeur service in Preston

The Preston bypass opened in 1958 and became part of the M6, and the town has been a road junction ever since. The M55 goes west to the coast, the M61 south-east to Manchester, the M65 east into the mill towns. Add a West Coast Main Line station with fast trains in both directions and you have the best-connected place in Lancashire by a wide margin.

That makes Preston a natural starting point for long journeys and a natural meeting point for people coming from several directions. Manchester Airport is around forty-five miles south, an hour on a good run and rather longer at the wrong time. Liverpool is a little nearer and often quicker.

03The area

Preston on the ground

The practical version of Preston: turnings, one-ways and the places a car can actually stop.

Compact and hilly, the centre drops to the Ribble on its southern side, where Avenham and Miller Parks give it an unexpectedly grand setting. The bus station, a listed piece of concrete architecture, sits at the top. Fishergate is the main street and has been narrowed and part-pedestrianised. Beyond the centre, the road system is generous: ring roads, dual carriageways and the docks development to the south-west. Broughton and Fulwood to the north are prosperous and easy to reach.

04Demand

The journeys that start in Preston

Business, family and the occasional long night out of Preston.

Royal Preston is a major trauma centre with a very wide catchment and it generates a constant flow. The university brings student and academic movement, heavy in September. Legal and professional firms in the centre produce business travel. There is a strong pattern of rail meets, since Preston is where people from Blackpool, the Fylde and much of Lancashire join the main line. Deepdale on a matchday adds its own crowd.

05Road time

What M55 does, and when it does it

The half-hour that decides whether the run from Preston to Manchester is calm.

Junctions 31 and 32 on the M6 are the local pinch point and both are poor at either end of the day. The M55 is usually clear except on a summer Friday heading to the coast. In town, Ringway and the approaches to Fishergate slow from eight, and the hospital roundabouts at Fulwood are busy through the middle of the day. To Manchester Airport we allow an hour outside peak and up to eighty-five minutes inside it.

06The kerb

Doors, boots and the Preston pavement

Where the car stands in Preston, how long it can stand there, and what happens if it cannot.

Butler Street carries the station set-down, with a car park behind it, and the driver meets arrivals on the concourse. Fishergate is restricted, so central collections happen on Corporation Street or from a multi-storey. Royal Preston has a large site with several entrances and the right one matters. Hotel car parks north of the centre are easy. On residential streets in the PR2 postcode, driveways are the norm and there is no difficulty.

Collection notes for Preston

  • 01Preston station sets down on Butler Street. For arrivals the driver meets you on the concourse rather than in the car park.
  • 02Fishergate is restricted, so central collections happen on Corporation Street or from a multi-storey a short walk away.
  • 03Royal Preston has several entrances across a large site; tell us the department and the driver will be at the right one.
  • 04On a summer Friday the M55 to the coast is heavy from mid-afternoon, which matters if your route crosses it.

07Included as standard

The things nobody should have to ask for in Preston

  • 01

    Arrivals at Manchester, covered

Coming back into Preston at one in the morning is when this matters most. The hall at Manchester is quiet, the trains into Preston have stopped, and the chauffeur is standing exactly where they said they would be with the car a short walk away.

  • 02

Size the job before you enquire from Preston

Prices are per vehicle rather than per passenger, so a Preston collection with four people in it costs what the same car would cost with one. Luggage changes the class of car sent to Preston, not the arithmetic.

  • 03

Loaded before you leave the University of Central Lancashire

Cases are carried from the door in Preston to the boot, and from the boot into the terminal. You should not be lifting anything at Manchester or on M55 unless you want to.

  • 04

    Held for you at Manchester

Trains into Preston get the same treatment. If the service into Preston loses twenty minutes somewhere before it reaches you, the chauffeur leaves Preston twenty minutes later and nothing else about the booking changes.

  • 05

Stops added to the Preston quotation

Journeys with more than one address on M55 are normal. Collect in Preston, pick up a colleague in Blackpool, then run to Manchester: one car, one price, one chauffeur.

  • 06

    Has driven M55, M61 and A59 before

Every chauffeur sent to Preston is licensed for private hire and drives one of our vehicles rather than their own. What is more useful to you is that they know where a long car can turn round near the Harris Building.

08Terminals

Reading the table: the drive is door to terminal from a Preston address, and the mileage is what the car will actually cover on M55 and the roads beyond it. Return legs into Preston are met inside the arrivals hall at Manchester.

LF-01The drive to the Manchester terminal

The drive to the Manchester terminal

A pre-dawn departure out of Preston is easier to plan than a nine o'clock one. M55 is empty, the drive sits close to its lower bound, and the only variable left is how long you take to reach the car.

The last thing the chauffeur does at Manchester is check that nothing loaded in Preston is still in the boot. That sounds trivial until something has been left in it and you are two hundred miles from Preston.

Choosing between classes for Preston

LF-02Choosing between classes for Preston

Choosing between classes for Preston

We would rather send the right car to Preston than the most expensive one. If your run from Preston is two people and a weekend bag, the E-Class does it properly and the difference stays in your pocket.

Where one car does a whole day across Preston, comfort compounds. Six hours in a First Saloon across Preston is a materially different day from six hours in something smaller, and the hourly rates reflect that.

Loading the boot in Preston

LF-03Loading the boot in Preston

Loading the boot in Preston

The chauffeur reaches Preston with a margin, parks, and then does nothing at all. That waiting on a Preston street is deliberate. It is what turns a time printed on a confirmation into a car genuinely standing in Preston when the door opens.

The route out of Preston is chosen for the hour rather than for the map. Sometimes that means the long way round past the Harris Building, and the chauffeur takes it without announcing how clever it was.

  • A second collection in Chorley priced into the same booking
  • Engine off and boot open before you reach the car in Preston
  • Indicative 55-85 minutes from Preston to Manchester, given once and then left alone
  • Pick-ups at Preston made on the side that tolerates a stationary car

Getting home to Preston after a long flight

Landing at Manchester after a long flight, with Preston still to come, is the point at which most ground arrangements fall over. A Preston return is built for it. The chauffeur is inside arrivals, the car is close, and the drive back into Preston starts within a few minutes of you clearing customs.

On the way back the chauffeur gives the indicative arrival in Preston once and then leaves you alone with it. If the arrival into Preston moves, you hear that once as well, with a number rather than an apology.

  • Late landings still end with the cases at your door in Preston
  • Return route into Preston chosen at the airport exit rather than in advance

Rail into Preston, car for the rest

Rail into Preston, car for the rest

A collection at Preston has a small choreography to it: the right entrance, the right side of the barrier, and a chauffeur standing on the concourse rather than sending a map pin and hoping.

For a journey into Preston where rail covers the distance and the car covers the ends, book both legs at once. The quotation then names the collection at Preston and the run into Preston as a single price.

The car that waits near Preston Docks

Some Preston days do not fit a transfer. Three appointments between Preston Docks and the Harris Building, a lunch that overruns, a change of plan at four: booking the car by the hour costs less thought than booking four separate journeys and hoping they line up.

An evening that begins at the University of Central Lancashire and ends somewhere nobody has decided yet is an ordinary booking rather than a difficult one. That is more or less the whole reason for holding a car in Preston.

A quotation needs four things: when, from where in Preston, to where, and how many of you. Everything else about a Preston booking is refinement. We come back with the price, the vehicle class and the Preston collection time we would recommend.

Regular bookings out of Preston run on the same written basis as one-off journeys. Each Preston journey is priced before it happens rather than totted up somewhere and presented afterwards.

17Answers

Preston chauffeur questions

Timing, kerbs and price, as they apply in Preston.

Why is Preston a good place to start a long journey?

Because three motorways meet here and the station is a main line interchange. Whether you are heading for Scotland, the Midlands or the coast, you are on a fast road within ten minutes of the centre, which is not true of most Lancashire towns.

Where does a car meet me at Preston station?

On Butler Street, where the set-down is, or the driver comes onto the concourse with a name board if you would rather be met inside. He tracks the train, so a late arrival simply means he is standing there a little longer.

How long to Manchester Airport from Preston?

An hour outside the peak and up to eighty-five minutes inside it, roughly forty-five miles by the M61 and M60. Junctions 31 and 32 of the M6 are the local delay, so for a morning flight we set off before they load rather than after.

Do you cover the villages north of Preston?

Yes, up through Broughton, Goosnargh and out toward Longridge. Those lanes are narrow and unlit in places, so for a dark early collection the driver arrives with time in hand and confirms the approach the evening before rather than guessing at a farm gate.
