Chauffeur service in Northfields — summary

First Class Chauffeurs drives Northfields in West London, and most of the work here is the ground half of a longer journey: the run out to Heathrow before a flight, the car waiting when one lands, and days held by the hour between Northfields station and Lammas Park. Collections are made from private addresses, from Ealing Studios, and from the taxi rank side of Ealing Broadway rather than the drop-off lane. Heathrow is an indicative 20-40 minutes from Northfields, about 8 miles by road, using A4 Great West Road. Vehicles run from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class up to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, whichever Northfields address the car is going to. Every class is quoted individually; the written quotation for Northfields confirms the final price, what it covers and any applicable tax.

01Where Northfields starts

Chauffeur service in Northfields

The area runs from Northfield Avenue down to Little Ealing Lane and across to Lammas Park, and it is almost entirely residential. That has one useful consequence: nearly every pick-up is a house or a low block with a driveway or a workable kerb, and the car can stand outside without anybody minding. Through traffic goes elsewhere.

For airports the route is simple. South Ealing Road and Boston Manor Road drop straight onto the A4 at Boston Manor, and from there Heathrow is a clean run west. The same road takes you the other way to Chiswick and the M4 spur, which is the sensible option when the A4 slows near the Hogarth Roundabout.

03The area

How a long car moves through Northfields

The street plan of Northfields, described by someone reversing into it.

Northfield Avenue is the busy one, especially the parade by the station where the buses stop and the bays are permanently full. Everything east and west of it is a quiet residential grid with speed humps and permit bays. The station has no forecourt worth the name. Northfields depot sits behind the line and its access road takes more traffic than you would guess, particularly at shift change.

04Demand

Who takes a car from the W5 district

Demand across Greater London is not evenly spread. This is where it clusters in Northfields.

Household bookings dominate: airport runs, hospital appointments at Ealing and West Middlesex, and the annual expedition to a wedding somewhere in the Home Counties. There is a strong line in early Heathrow work from the streets between Lammas Park and Little Ealing, where the flight is long-haul and the passengers want a car at the door rather than a walk to the Tube in the dark.

05Road time

Timing the run to Heathrow

Leaving Northfields at four in the morning is a different journey from leaving at eight.

Northfield Avenue is slow between 08:00 and 09:15 and again at school pick-up. The A4 at Boston Manor queues eastbound from about 07:15, though westbound towards Heathrow it holds up well until mid-afternoon. Evening congestion is short-lived compared with Ealing Broadway. A car leaving Northfields at six will normally be at Terminal 5 inside half an hour.

06The kerb

Standing, waiting and the pick-up point in Northfields

The stopping place is the whole problem in Northfields. This is how a booking near Northfields station solves it.

This is one of the easier parts of west London to wait in. Residential bays are permit-controlled during the working day, but a car standing with the chauffeur at the wheel causes no trouble, and outside those hours the streets are open. The parade on Northfield Avenue is the exception, with single yellow, loading restrictions and constant bus movements. For station meets we use the corner of Northcroft Road rather than the shop frontage.

Collection notes for Northfields

  • 01Station collections are made at the Northcroft Road corner, since the shop parade opposite is single yellow with loading bans.
  • 02Most houses here have room for the car directly outside, so we confirm the door number rather than a nearby junction.
  • 03For the A4 we use Boston Manor Road rather than South Ealing Road when the junction at the top is backing up.
  • 04The depot access road gets busy at shift change; we plan around it for early-morning collections nearby.

07Included as standard

Every Northfields booking, as standard

  • 01

Heathrow to Northfields, door to door

The meet happens inside the Heathrow terminal, not on the way back to Northfields. That is the whole point of it: you come through the doors, someone is there, the cases are taken, and the drive to Northfields starts without a phone call.

  • 02

Waiting, drop-offs and stops in Northfields

A second pick-up in Ealing or a stop at Boston Manor House on the way is arranged when the journey is quoted rather than negotiated at the kerb. Add it to the enquiry and it appears on the written Northfields price.

  • 03

The aircraft, not the timetable, into Heathrow

Tracking runs from the moment the aircraft pushes back, long before the car leaves Northfields. If it lands early the car is already at Heathrow; if it lands late the chauffeur waits, and the waiting is part of the Northfields transfer.

  • 04

One price for the whole Northfields journey

The quotation states the price, the vehicle class, the waiting allowance at Heathrow, and any applicable tax on the Northfields journey. There is no multiplier for a Friday out of Northfields and no surcharge that turns up afterwards.

  • 05

What goes in the boot before A4 Great West Road

Boot capacity is quoted against passengers rather than in the abstract, on every Northfields booking. Three adults and a full boot out of Northfields is a real constraint, and the written quotation treats it as one.

  • 06

    Practised at the Northfields handover

Chauffeurs working Northfields know where a car can legally stand near Northfields station, which entrance at Ealing Studios is used for loading, and how long the lights on A4 Great West Road actually take.

What a chauffeur does in Northfields

The Northfields handover, in order

LF-01The Northfields handover, in order

The Northfields handover, in order

The chauffeur reaches Northfields with time in hand and parks. Nothing about the first ten minutes should involve you: no circling, no hazard lights outside Ealing Studios, no phone call asking which end of the street you are on.

From there the drive out of Northfields is quiet unless you want it otherwise. Water in the door, a charger that fits your phone, and a chauffeur who has already decided whether A4 Great West Road or Northfield Avenue is the better way out of Northfields this morning.

  • Engine off and boot open before you reach the car in Northfields
  • Indicative 20-40 minutes from Northfields to Heathrow, given once and then left alone
  • Pick-ups at Ealing Broadway made on the side that tolerates a stationary car
  • Collections from Ealing Studios arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
Heathrow to your door in Northfields

LF-02Heathrow to your door in Northfields

Heathrow to your door in Northfields

By the time you clear customs at Heathrow the chauffeur has been in the building a while, has the board up, and knows roughly what the 20-40 minutes back to Northfields will cost at that hour.

If the onward journey is by rail, the car runs to Ealing Broadway instead of home, with the cases carried to the barrier and enough margin left for the train you actually intend to take.

  • Aircraft tracked into Heathrow from the tail number, so Northfields is reached on time
  • Chauffeur inside the Heathrow arrivals hall with a board naming you and Northfields
  • Heathrow car park found and paid for before the Northfields chauffeur walks in
  • Indicative 20-40 minutes back into Northfields
Rail, then road, into Northfields

LF-03Rail, then road, into Northfields

Rail, then road, into Northfields

Business travel in and out of Northfields often runs rail for the distance and car for the ends. It is quicker than driving the whole way, and a good deal less trouble than parking in Northfields at the end of it.

Luggage is the reason most people book a car at Ealing Broadway. Two large cases across the Ealing Broadway concourse is unpleasant; the same two cases handed to a chauffeur at the barrier is not a problem at all.

Holding a car across Northfields

Early starts from Northfields

LF-04Early starts from Northfields

Early starts from Northfields

Weekend departures out of Northfields behave differently from weekday ones. A4 Great West Road is quieter and the Heathrow drop-off is busier, and the two do not cancel each other out as neatly as people expect them to.

On a very early start the streets around Northfields station are the easiest they will be all day, which is why a five o'clock collection is quoted with more confidence than an afternoon one.

Saloon or MPV out of Northfields

LF-05Saloon or MPV out of Northfields

Saloon or MPV out of Northfields

Ask about luggage out of Northfields before comfort. Two people and two cases out of Northfields is a saloon question; four people and four cases is not, and that is the one mistake which cannot be fixed at the kerb.

Accessibility needs change the vehicle and sometimes the Northfields collection point as well. Mention them when you enquire and the car that arrives in Northfields is one that actually works for you.

Getting into Northfields, and getting a price for it

The day the Northfields diary decides

LF-06The day the Northfields diary decides

The day the Northfields diary decides

A full day out of Northfields usually runs from a breakfast meeting to an evening flight, with three or four stops in between and at least one of them moved at short notice.

Where the day crosses into Ealing or beyond, that is simply mileage on the same booking. There is no boundary at the edge of Northfields past which a different arrangement begins.

17Answers

Northfields chauffeur questions

Written for Northfields rather than lifted from a general list.

How does a car get from Northfields onto the A4 quickest?

Down Boston Manor Road to the Boston Manor junction, which puts you on the westbound carriageway without touching the Ealing one-way system. South Ealing Road is the alternative and it is usually a minute or two slower in the morning.

Can the chauffeur park outside my house in Little Ealing?

Almost always. The residential bays are permit-controlled in the working day but a chauffeur waiting at the wheel is fine, and at the hours most airport runs start the restrictions are not in force at all.

Do you cover appointments at West Middlesex Hospital from here?

Yes. It is a short run down through Brentford and Isleworth, usually fifteen to twenty-five minutes. Because outpatient appointments overrun, we hold the car rather than book a fixed return, and you call when you are actually finished.

Is Northfields a good starting point for a very early flight?

One of the better ones in west London. At five in the morning the A4 is empty from Boston Manor to the Heathrow tunnel, and there is no one-way system, no gyratory and no bus lane in between to slow the first ten minutes.
