Chauffeur service in Kilburn — summary

Half past four in the morning is an ordinary start in Kilburn. That is what the first wave of departures out of London City asks for, and an empty Belsize Road is the closest thing to a predictable drive time anyone gets. We cover Kilburn and Queen's Park for airport transfers, private aviation runs, collections at Kilburn High Road and days held by the hour between Shoot-Up Hill and Brondesbury. Reckon on an indicative 40-75 minutes out of Kilburn to London City, roughly 13 miles. Waiting from touchdown at London City, the meet inside arrivals and tracking from the tail number are all part of the Kilburn transfer. No standing price list is published; the written quotation for Kilburn confirms the price.

01Opening on Kilburn

Chauffeur service in Kilburn

The A5 runs dead straight from Maida Vale up through Kilburn to Cricklewood, and almost every Kilburn address is a few streets off it. The road itself has red-route sections, bus lanes and no useful waiting, so collections happen on the turnings east and west, which are permit-controlled but perfectly manageable for a car with a driver in it.

Three stations carry the Kilburn name on three different railways, which causes more confusion here than anywhere else we cover. Kilburn on the Jubilee line is up at Shoot-Up Hill. Kilburn High Road is on the Overground and the West Coast slow lines. Kilburn Park is on the Bakerloo, a mile south. We always ask which.

Driving Kilburn: the practical version

Shoot-Up Hill looks straightforward on a map. The kerb outside it is another matter in Kilburn.

The High Road carries everything and carries it slowly, with a bus lane, frequent crossings and constant deliveries. Off it, the streets climbing towards Brondesbury are narrow at the top. Belsize Road and Kilburn Lane run east and west and both give a quieter way out. Shoot-Up Hill at the northern end is where the A5 finally begins to move at something like a road’s proper speed.

04Demand

The journeys that start in Kilburn

Airports first, hourly work second, long runs third: roughly the order Kilburn calls in.

A dense residential district with a very mixed pattern of work. Airport runs at all hours, including a good many late returns from Heathrow and Luton. The Kiln Theatre adds evening bookings. St John’s Wood and the West End are close enough that a car held for the evening is a common request. Long-distance journeys north on the M1 start here naturally, since the A5 points that way.

05Road time

What the traffic does in Kilburn, and when

The difference between 40-75 minutes and the same drive out of Kilburn at eight in the morning.

The A5 southbound is heavy from 07:00 and stays that way until half past nine; northbound the evening runs 16:00 to 19:30. Saturday is busy on the High Road all day. The useful thing about Kilburn is that the M1 is twenty minutes north at a quiet hour, so a Luton departure before six is genuinely quick. Heathrow, in the other direction, is the longer run.

06The kerb

Where the car holds around Kilburn (Jubilee line)

Where a car can legally wait near Shoot-Up Hill, and where it cannot.

There is no waiting on the High Road at any hour worth using, and enforcement is constant. Collections are made on the side streets, most of them permit bays that tolerate a car with a chauffeur at the wheel. For the Kiln Theatre we hold on a turning off Willesden Lane. Kilburn High Road station has a narrow approach with no set-down, so we meet a short walk away from it.

Collection notes for Kilburn

  • 01Name the station: Kilburn, Kilburn High Road and Kilburn Park are on three different railways and a mile apart.
  • 02The A5 has red-route sections and constant enforcement, so we collect from the turnings east and west of it.
  • 03Kiln Theatre collections are held on a turning off Willesden Lane rather than outside the doors.
  • 04For a Luton or Stansted departure the car goes north on the A5 to the M1, which is quicker than any route through town.

  • 01

The person at the wheel in Kilburn

Knowing Kilburn from the driver's seat is a different thing from knowing it from a map. In Kilburn it means knowing that the obvious turning off Belsize Road is banned between certain hours and the unobvious one is not.

  • 02

Inside the hall at London City

Coming back into Kilburn at one in the morning is when this matters most. The hall at London City is quiet, the trains into Kilburn High Road have stopped, and the chauffeur is standing exactly where they said they would be with the car a short walk away.

  • 03

No meter, no surge on a Kilburn run

The figure quoted for Kilburn covers the drive, the waiting and the meet. It is confirmed in writing, so there is nothing to argue about on a Kilburn doorstep at the end of a long day.

  • 04

The stops between Kilburn and London City

Journeys with more than one address on Belsize Road are normal. Collect in Kilburn, pick up a colleague in West Hampstead, then run to London City: one car, one price, one chauffeur.

  • 05

Late landings at London City, absorbed

Trains into Kilburn High Road get the same treatment. If the service into Kilburn High Road loses twenty minutes somewhere before it reaches you, the chauffeur leaves Kilburn twenty minutes later and nothing else about the booking changes.

  • 06

Cases loaded at the Kilburn kerb

Cases are carried from the door in Kilburn to the boot, and from the boot into the terminal. You should not be lifting anything at London City or on Belsize Road unless you want to.

We ask for the flight number rather than the landing time into London City, because only one of those tells us when to leave Kilburn. From it we know the aircraft, the terminal, when to leave Kilburn, and when to start the walk in from the car park.

Once the cases are in, the return into Kilburn is deliberately dull. If you want to sleep between London City and Kilburn, sleep. If you want the fastest way to Shoot-Up Hill rather than the shortest, say so and it happens.

The advantage is not the car; it is not having to think about the car while you are crossing Kilburn. Your bag stays in the boot, your coat stays on the seat, and the chauffeur is outside Kilburn Grange Park when you come back out of it.

Overruns on a Kilburn day are charged at the published hourly rate and confirmed in writing afterwards. Nothing is added at the roadside in Kilburn and nothing turns up later that you have not already seen.

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Kilburn and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere Belsize Road will tolerate. In Kilburn the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

The route out of Kilburn is chosen for the hour rather than for the map. Sometimes that means the long way round past Brondesbury, and the chauffeur takes it without announcing how clever it was.

  • Indicative 40-75 minutes from Kilburn to London City, given once and then left alone
  • Pick-ups at Kilburn High Road made on the side that tolerates a stationary car
  • Collections from Kilburn Grange Park arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
  • The car holds on Salusbury Road when the kerb outside your door will not take it

If your address sits nearer Queen's Park than the middle of Kilburn, the drive is a different length. We say so and quote it, rather than using the middle of Kilburn and hoping the difference is small.

Nothing about a Kilburn departure should feel rushed even when it is early. The chauffeur has the London City terminal, the entrance, and a fair idea of which door puts you closest to your desk before the car leaves Kilburn.

Where a service into Kilburn High Road is replaced by a bus for part of the route, say so. The car can meet you at whichever station the train genuinely terminates at, rather than at Kilburn High Road because the ticket said so.

Where a station kerb genuinely will not take a car, the chauffeur holds a street away on Salusbury Road and comes forward once you are through the barrier. One message tells you where on Salusbury Road that is.

Choosing between classes for Kilburn

We would rather send the right car to Kilburn than the most expensive one. If your run from Kilburn is two people and a weekend bag, the E-Class does it properly and the difference stays in your pocket.

If you are undecided, describe the journey: passengers, cases, where it starts in Kilburn and where it ends. We will recommend a class for Kilburn, and the recommendation is usually cheaper than the one people expect.

For a run out of the NW6 district to London City, add the flight number. It gives us the terminal at London City, the landing time, and whether the collection in Kilburn needs to be earlier than the arithmetic alone suggests.

The quotation states what the Kilburn figure covers, including the waiting at London City and the meet, and any applicable tax. Nothing on this page carries a figure; the quotation is where the Kilburn price is stated.

17Answers

Kilburn chauffeur questions

The practical ones: where the car waits in Kilburn, when it leaves, and what it costs.

There are three Kilburn stations — which one do you collect from?

Any of them, but we need the name. Kilburn is on the Jubilee line at Shoot-Up Hill, Kilburn High Road is on the Overground, and Kilburn Park is on the Bakerloo a mile to the south. A car sent to the wrong one is fifteen minutes from the right one.

Can a car stop on Kilburn High Road itself?

Not usefully. It is red route in stretches, bus lane elsewhere, and enforced closely all day. We use the residential turnings on either side, which put the chauffeur within a minute of most addresses without risking a penalty on your journey.

How long is Kilburn to Luton Airport?

Forty to seventy minutes for around twenty-eight miles, up the A5 to the M1 and out at Junction 10. Before six in the morning it is at the shorter end. The M1 between Junctions 6 and 9 is what stretches it later in the day.

Do you handle late pick-ups after a play at the Kiln?

Yes. The theatre sits on a stretch of the High Road with nowhere to stop, so the chauffeur waits on a turning off Willesden Lane and comes forward when you are outside. It is a thirty-second walk and it saves circling the block.
