Chauffeur service in Highgate, N6, from the Village down to Archway Road

Highgate sits on top of a hill with three roads down it, all of them slow. Knowing which one to use at which hour is most of the job here.

Chauffeur service in Highgate — summary

Kerb space in Highgate is finite, and most of what makes a collection here go smoothly happens before you open the door. The car is in position early, parked where it is legal to stand near Highgate Village, and one message tells you where. From there Luton is an indicative 35-65 minutes and about 26 miles, usually by Archway Road (A1) with Highgate Hill as the alternative. We also cover station work at Crouch Hill, hourly hire across Greater London and long-distance runs out of Highgate. Every vehicle class on this page is quoted individually, and the written quotation confirms the final price for the run out of Highgate.

01Highgate at a glance

Chauffeur service in Highgate

The Village is a hundred yards of Georgian frontage around Pond Square, and everything below it drops away sharply in three directions. Highgate Hill towards Archway, Swains Lane towards the Heath and North Hill towards East Finchley all behave differently, and the right one depends on the hour and the direction of travel.

A great deal of the work here is early airport departures from the large houses on The Grove, Bishopswood Road and Broadlands Road, plus school and college running during term. The Archway Road below gives quick access to the A1, which is why Luton and the north are usually the easier direction out of N6.

03The area

What the streets around Highgate Village allow

The practical version of Highgate: turnings, one-ways and the places a car can actually stop.

Swains Lane is the one that surprises people. It is steep, walled on both sides, effectively single file where it passes the cemetery, and a poor choice for anything long in the wheelbase. Highgate Hill is wide enough but slow, with buses and the hospital traffic at the bottom. The Village streets themselves are narrow and cobbled in places, with residents’ bays taking every inch. North Hill is the easy route and the one we default to.

04Demand

The reasons a car leaves Highgate

What people in Highgate actually ask a chauffeur to do.

Large households with international travel, academics and media people, and a run of school-related work from the independent schools on the hill. Highgate Cemetery brings a steady trickle of visitors who want a car for the day rather than a transfer. Corporate work skews towards the City and Canary Wharf, both of which are a straightforward run down the Archway Road and Holloway Road.

05Road time

Road time from Highgate, honestly stated

The difference between 35-65 minutes and the same drive out of Highgate at eight in the morning.

The hill is worst between eight and nine, when school traffic, buses and the Archway approach all coincide, and the queue on Highgate Hill can run back to Pond Square. Weekend afternoons bring Heath and cemetery visitors and the Village parking fills entirely. Snow and ice matter here more than in most of London, because all three routes off the hill are gradients and the side streets are salted last.

06The kerb

Loading, waiting and Archway Road (A1)

One message, naming the exact spot on Archway Road (A1). That is the whole of the Highgate system.

Residents’ bays cover the Village and the streets around it, with double yellows on the tightest corners. On The Grove and the larger avenues there is room for a car to stand while bags come out. For addresses on Swains Lane we agree the meeting point at the top or the bottom rather than halfway, because there is nowhere in between where a vehicle can pull in without blocking the lane completely.

Collection notes for Highgate

  • 01Swains Lane addresses are met at the top or the bottom of the lane. There is no safe pull-in on the walled stretch and a stopped car closes the road.
  • 02The Grove and the wider avenues take a waiting vehicle comfortably, so early departures from those addresses are collected at the door.
  • 03For anything going north we drop to the Archway Road and take the A1, which is quicker than crossing to the A41 from the top of the hill.
  • 04In freezing weather we start from the flatter approach on North Hill rather than climbing Highgate Hill from Archway.

07Included as standard

Part of the price on every Highgate journey

  • 01

The car stays with you across Highgate

Short stops on the way out of Highgate are worth mentioning when you enquire: a pharmacy, a school gate, ten minutes at East Finchley to collect something. They cost nothing to plan into a Highgate booking and time to improvise.

  • 02

The walk out of Luton, with help

A meet is a person inside Luton, holding a board with your name on it and a car pointed at Highgate. Not a pin on a map and not a call from the roadside on Archway Road (A1). The distinction sounds small until you are the one at Luton with three cases, a dead phone and a Highgate address to reach.

  • 03

Knows where to stand near Highgate Cemetery

The same person drives you out of Highgate to Luton and, on a return booking, meets the flight. By the second journey they already know which side of Highgate Village you would rather be dropped on.

  • 04

From wheels-up to the Highgate kerb

The point of tracking is that the chauffeur's start time in Highgate is ours to move and not yours. You do not message us from the aisle, and no Highgate booking is charged for the hour the airline lost before it ever reached Luton.

  • 05

Hand luggage, or eight cases from Highgate

The return leg into Highgate follows the same rule in reverse. Whatever left Highgate plus whatever was bought has to fit, so if the way home is heavier than the way out, put it on the booking.

  • 06

    Per vehicle out of Highgate

The written figure covers the drive out of Highgate, the waiting at Luton and the meet inside the hall. What it does not cover is listed as plainly as the drive out of Highgate and the Luton waiting that it does.

Highgate to Luton

Return legs into Highgate matter as much as outbound ones. Coming back into Highgate from Luton at six in the evening is not the same journey as the reverse at six in the morning, and one table cannot show both. Tell us the flight into Luton and we will say which applies to your Highgate address.

Meeting a flight into Luton properly

LF-01Meeting a flight into Luton properly

Meeting a flight into Luton properly

The failure mode of ordinary ground transport is familiar: a text message, a Luton car park you cannot find, a trolley that will not fit in the lift, and Highgate still ahead of you. That is not how a return into Highgate is meant to go.

Some returns into Highgate finish at a hotel rather than a house. The chauffeur takes the cases into Channing School, hands them over at the desk, and the booking closes there instead of on the kerb outside it.

  • Chauffeur inside the Luton arrivals hall with a board naming you and Highgate

The minimum block is four hours in most classes and six in the largest, stated on your quotation rather than discovered on a Highgate pavement afterwards. In Highgate that buys a morning with the car standing by.

Where the chauffeur waits depends on which Highgate street you are on. Near Highgate Cemetery that might be a side road two minutes away rather than the front door, and the message you get says which. When you are ready the car is at the Highgate kerb before you have finished your coat.

Getting into the car on Archway Road (A1)

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Highgate and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere Archway Road (A1) will tolerate. In Highgate the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

On a return booking the same chauffeur comes back for you, which by the second journey means they already know which side of Highgate Village works for the drop and how long your door takes to answer.

  • The stopping point on Archway Road (A1) agreed before the morning rather than during it
  • No meter and no waiting charge on a residential collection in Highgate
  • Route out of Highgate chosen for the hour rather than for the map
  • Gated entrances and courtyards in Highgate checked in advance

Most missed flights out of Luton are lost somewhere in the N6 district rather than in the air. Out of Highgate the ground problem is Archway Road (A1) between about seven and half past nine, and the answer is leaving before it rather than driving harder through it.

Return legs into Highgate get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Luton and drives you back to the same door in Highgate.

Crouch Hill to your door in Highgate

Crouch Hill to your door in Highgate

Rail solves distance and then hands you a problem at the Crouch Hill end of it. Standing outside Crouch Hill with two cases at seven in the evening is that problem, and it is exactly what a car is for.

Pick-ups at Crouch Hill are quoted like any other journey, with the train number on the booking so the chauffeur can watch it. If you miss the train and take the next one into Crouch Hill, tell us and the car simply waits.

The fleet against a Highgate journey

The car is chosen against the run out of Highgate rather than against the occasion. The same Highgate booking to Luton can want a saloon on Tuesday and an MPV on Friday because the number of cases changed and nothing else did.

Child seats, extra luggage, skis and golf bags all change the answer for a Highgate booking. Tell us what is going in the boot when you enquire from Highgate and we will name the class that takes it rather than the one that nearly does.

What we need to know about your Highgate journey

We answer with a price, a vehicle class and a Highgate collection time we would genuinely recommend, usually inside the hour. If that time looks early for a Highgate address, it is early on purpose.

Once the Highgate booking is confirmed you get the chauffeur's name, the vehicle and the registration before the day. On the morning itself you get one message when the car is in position on Archway Road (A1) or wherever it can legally stand.

17Answers

Highgate chauffeur questions

The questions Archway Road (A1) and Luton between them tend to raise.

Can a chauffeur car get down Swains Lane?

A saloon can, carefully, and an MPV is a poor idea. The lane narrows between the cemetery walls with nowhere to pass, and meeting a delivery van halfway means one of you reverses uphill. For addresses on the lane we agree a meeting point at one end and walk the difference.

What is the fastest way out of Highgate for a morning flight?

North Hill down to the Archway Road, then the A1. It avoids the Highgate Hill queue and the Archway junction, and it puts you on a dual carriageway within a few minutes. For Heathrow we then cross on the North Circular or drop through Hampstead, depending on the hour.

Do you cover Highgate Cemetery visits and tours?

Yes, usually as hourly hire rather than a transfer. Tours run to a fixed start and an uncertain finish, and Swains Lane has no waiting space at all, so the car stands in the Village and returns to the gate on a call. It is a short walk and considerably less trouble.

Is Highgate difficult in snow?

It can be. Every way off the hill is a gradient, and the residential streets are gritted after the main roads. When conditions are poor we start earlier, use North Hill rather than Highgate Hill, and would rather tell you the honest position the night before than at six in the morning.
