Chauffeur service in Torquay — summary

Trains do the middle of a lot of Torquay journeys and a car does the ends. We collect at Paignton and Newton Abbot on the side of the station where a car can legally stand, watch the service the way we watch a flight, and carry the bags from the barrier. The same standard applies to Bristol, an indicative 110-155 minutes from Torquay over roughly 95 miles, where the chauffeur meets you inside the hall. Hourly hire, airport transfers and long-distance driving are all booked from Torquay on the same terms. Nothing on this page carries a figure; the written quotation confirms what your own Torquay journey costs.

01Torquay, to begin with

Chauffeur service in Torquay

Torquay's difficulty is vertical. The town rises sharply from the harbour and the grand hotels sit on terraces above it, approached by drives that turn back on themselves and roads that were laid out for carriages. A car can reach almost all of them, but not quickly, and not by guessing.

The other consideration is the season. Between late July and the end of August the A380 and the roads into the bay carry holiday traffic at a crawl, and Saturday is changeover day. Any transfer with a flight or a train at the end of it is planned around that rather than around the mileage.

03The area

Reading Torquay before the pick-up

Cockington Village looks straightforward on a map. The kerb outside it is another matter in Torquay.

Palms, terraces and steep hairpins. The harbour and Torre Abbey Sands sit at the bottom; Wellswood, Warberry and Babbacombe are up on the hills with long views and narrow lanes. The seafront road is flat and pleasant out of season. The A3022 climbs inland to meet the A380, which since the Kingskerswell bypass opened has been a far better road than it used to be.

04Demand

The journeys that start in Torquay

What people in Torquay actually ask a chauffeur to do.

Conference business at the Riviera International Centre, hotel transfers all year, and a steady stream of visitors following the Agatha Christie connections around the bay and out to Greenway. Torbay Hospital serves the whole area. And there is genuine long-distance work: guests arriving at Exeter or Bristol and being driven down, which is a lot more comfortable than three changes on a train.

05Road time

Traffic, timing and A3022

The timing we would use if the booking out of Torquay were our own.

Summer Saturdays are the worst day of the week on the A380 and the approach roads, from mid-morning to late afternoon. The seafront slows from lunchtime in season. Out of season the town is quick. For Exeter Airport allow forty-five minutes; for Bristol, two hours; for Heathrow, three and a half, which means a departure in the small hours.

06The kerb

Where a car can legally stop in Torquay

Standing, waiting and loading around Riviera International Centre.

Hillside hotel driveways are steep and often single track with a passing place, so we ask which entrance and approach from the side that works. The harbour has pay and display bays that fill early. Torquay station on Rathmore Road has a small forecourt. For the terraces at Wellswood and Babbacombe there is limited turning space, so we position rather than reverse blind.

Collection notes for Torquay

  • 01Hillside hotel drives are steep and often single track, so tell us which entrance and we will approach accordingly.
  • 02Harbour bays fill early in season; we hold above and come down when you call.
  • 03Summer Saturdays are changeover day and the A380 crawls from mid-morning to late afternoon.
  • 04On the Wellswood and Babbacombe terraces there is little turning space, so we position the car in advance.

07Included as standard

Not extras: what a Torquay car comes with

  • 01

We watch the aircraft into Bristol

We reschedule the Bristol pick-up ourselves when the aircraft slips, and the car simply leaves Torquay later. What you agreed in writing before you left Torquay is what you pay when you get back to it.

  • 02

    Bristol arrivals, in person

A board with your name on it, held by the chauffeur who will drive you to Torquay. If the flight into Bristol is two hours late the board is still there two hours later, because the chauffeur left Torquay on the aircraft rather than on the schedule.

  • 03

What sits inside the Torquay quotation

Nothing is metered on the way to Bristol. The run from Torquay costs what the quotation says it costs, whether the traffic on A3022 is kind that morning or not.

  • 04

A chauffeur who knows the Torquay kerb

You get the same person for the whole journey out of Torquay, in a suit, who opens the door, loads the boot and says very little unless you start the conversation.

  • 05

    Holding the car in Torquay

The chauffeur waits wherever Torquay allows it, which is not always within sight of the door. You get one message naming the spot in Torquay, and the car is at the kerb by the time you reach it.

  • 06

What the boot takes on a Bristol run

Golf bags out of Torquay are the classic miscount. Four sets of clubs and four passengers out of Torquay does not go in a saloon, and it is a cheap thing to establish in advance.

08Terminals

Terminals, drive times and A3022

Reading the table: the drive is door to terminal from a Torquay address, and the mileage is what the car will actually cover on A3022 and the roads beyond it. Return legs into Torquay are met inside the arrivals hall at Bristol.

Being met when you land at Bristol

LF-01Being met when you land at Bristol

Being met when you land at Bristol

We treat the arrival as the harder half of a Torquay job. Anyone can drive from Torquay to Bristol; being in the right hall at the right minute after a delayed flight is the part that takes attention.

The car leaves Bristol by whichever exit is moving, which is not always the one the signs suggest, and comes into Torquay on A379. You will be at your Torquay door within the time the confirmation gave you.

  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Torquay
  • The same chauffeur who drove you out of Torquay
  • Board held at Bristol until you are standing in front of it, Torquay bound

Hourly hire around Torquay

The minimum block is four hours in most classes and six in the largest, stated on your quotation rather than discovered on a Torquay pavement afterwards. In Torquay that buys a morning with the car standing by.

Where the chauffeur waits depends on which Torquay street you are on. Near Babbacombe Cliff Railway that might be a side road two minutes away rather than the front door, and the message you get says which. When you are ready the car is at the Torquay kerb before you have finished your coat.

Finding each other on A3022

LF-03Finding each other on A3022

Finding each other on A3022

Ten minutes early on A3022, engine off, boot unlocked. The chauffeur has already worked out whether A3022 will let a car stand outside your door at that hour, or whether the answer is the side street behind Babbacombe Cliff Railway.

The route out of Torquay is chosen for the hour rather than for the map. Sometimes that means the long way round past Babbacombe Cliff Railway, and the chauffeur takes it without announcing how clever it was.

  • The stopping point on A3022 agreed before the morning rather than during it
  • No meter and no waiting charge on a residential collection in Torquay
  • Route out of Torquay chosen for the hour rather than for the map
  • Gated entrances and courtyards in Torquay checked in advance

If your address sits nearer Paignton than the middle of Torquay, the drive is a different length. We say so and quote it, rather than using the middle of Torquay and hoping the difference is small.

Return legs into Torquay get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Bristol and drives you back to the same door in Torquay.

LF-05Paignton, Newton Abbot and Torquay, and the cars that meet them

Paignton, Newton Abbot and Torquay, and the cars that meet them

Some journeys into Torquay genuinely are best done by rail for the long middle. What they still need is somebody at the end of the Paignton platform, and that is the part no timetable covers.

If the train into Paignton is cancelled entirely, the car can meet you wherever you end up instead. That flexibility is easier to arrange in advance than at the moment it is needed, so mention it when you book the Torquay leg.

Cabin, saloon, SUV or MPV in Torquay

Most Torquay bookings are an E-Class or an S-Class, because most bookings are one or two people with hand luggage and a flight to catch. The choice starts mattering when the passenger count out of Torquay rises, or the cases do.

Whatever class arrives, the welcome is identical: the same loading at the Torquay kerb, the same meet inside Bristol, the same chauffeur holding the door at both ends.

Booking from Torquay is deliberately short. Date, time, Torquay address, destination, passengers, luggage. If it is a run to Bristol, add the flight. We do the rest and send the Torquay price back in writing.

Repeat journeys out of Torquay are handled the same way as a single booking, with the price agreed in writing each time rather than accruing quietly. Nothing on a Torquay booking is charged that you have not seen first.

17Answers

Torquay chauffeur questions

About Torquay specifically, including the bits that are awkward to admit.

Can a car get up to the hillside hotels in Torquay?

Almost always, but not at speed and not without knowing which entrance. Several drives are single track with one passing place and a turn that needs planning. Tell us the hotel and we will arrive by the approach that works rather than the one a satnav prefers, which is often the one with a locked gate at the top.

How bad is the traffic on a summer Saturday?

It is the worst day of the week here. Changeover for holiday lets and parks fills the A380 and the roads into the bay from mid-morning until late afternoon, and a journey that takes twenty minutes in February takes an hour in August. If you are flying that day we leave far earlier than the distance suggests.

Do you do Agatha Christie tours around the bay?

We are asked for them regularly. Torre Abbey, the Grand Hotel, Burgh Island further along the coast and Greenway at Galmpton all feature, and Greenway in particular has restricted parking that has to be booked. It makes a full and pleasant day, and the lanes on the Dart side are narrow enough to enjoy slowly.

Which airport do people use from Torquay?

Exeter for domestic and a handful of European routes, at about forty-five minutes. Bristol for a wider choice, at two hours. Heathrow only when the flight is genuinely there, because it is three and a half hours each way. We will always say if a nearer airport makes the whole trip easier.
