Chauffeur hire in Sydenham, SE26

Chauffeur service in Sydenham — summary

Covering the SE26 district and the streets either side of it, First Class Chauffeurs works the last mile of a first-class itinerary rather than the middle of it. Most bookings from Sydenham are one of three things: a car to Biggin Hill, an indicative 25-50 minutes and about 9 miles on Kirkdale; a meet at the arrivals barrier on the way home; or a chauffeur held for a day that runs between Sydenham Hill Wood and Dartmouth Road. Luggage is loaded at the Sydenham kerb, waiting time is built into the transfer, and nothing is metered. Nothing is published as a price list, and your written Sydenham quotation fixes the price.

01Sydenham, briefly

Chauffeur service in Sydenham

Sydenham runs along a valley floor with the Crystal Palace ridge above it, and that shape decides most journeys. Sydenham Road is the flat part, with the shops, the station and the junction locals call Cobb’s Corner. From there Kirkdale and Sydenham Hill climb steadily. A car heading north or west has to go up; one heading for Catford or Beckenham stays down.

Two stations serve the area and they are nothing alike. Sydenham sits on Sydenham Road with a short approach and a great deal of bus traffic beside it. Sydenham Hill is most of a mile away and several hundred feet up, in a wooded cutting off College Road, with barely room for a car to turn. Which one you name changes the whole plan.

03The area

Sydenham on the ground

What Kirkdale and the roads around it do to a timetable.

Long and narrow, with everything on one road. Sydenham Road carries buses, deliveries and the shopping traffic in a corridor that is not wide, and Cobb’s Corner at its western end is where three routes meet and none of them wins. Above that the residential streets off Kirkdale are steep and quiet, with big Victorian houses and driveways, which makes them among the easier collections in SE26.

04Demand

The work that comes out of Sydenham

The pattern of a normal week in Sydenham.

Household airport work is the mainstay, and it comes with cases and children more often than not. The larger houses up Kirkdale and around Sydenham Hill produce a regular weekday commute toward the City. There is event work from the Horniman just over the boundary, and a steady flow of collections tied to the schools on the ridge, which finish at hours the traffic does not suit.

05Road time

Sydenham to Biggin Hill, by the clock

The timing we would use if the booking out of Sydenham were our own.

Sydenham Road is busy from eight to half nine and again from half three, and the school traffic on Kirkdale makes the hill worse than the flat. The route north through Forest Hill puts a car onto the South Circular, which is best avoided; the route west over the ridge is longer and generally quicker. For Gatwick we would rather leave at half five and arrive early than leave at seven and arrive anxious.

06The kerb

Waiting in Sydenham without blocking it

Standing, waiting and loading around Sydenham Hill Wood.

The station approach on Sydenham Road takes a car briefly and no longer, because the buses need the space. Most collections start on the residential turnings off Kirkdale or Dartmouth Road, both of which have room to spare. Sydenham Hill station has almost nothing at the front and a steep, narrow lane behind it, so a passenger arriving there is met at the top of the steps rather than at the platform end.

Collection notes for Sydenham

  • 01Sydenham and Sydenham Hill are a mile apart and several hundred feet different in height. Name the station and the car goes to the right one.
  • 02The approach outside Sydenham station is shared with buses, so it takes a car for a moment and not for a wait.
  • 03Kirkdale and the streets off it are steep with driveways rather than kerb parking, which makes a door collection there straightforward.
  • 04For an early Gatwick departure the car leaves before six and takes the ridge route rather than dropping down to the South Circular.

07Included as standard

Not extras: what a Sydenham car comes with

  • 01

Has driven Sydenham Hill, Perry Vale and Sydenham Road (A212) before

Every chauffeur sent to Sydenham is licensed for private hire and drives one of our vehicles rather than their own. What is more useful to you is that they know where a long car can turn round near Cobb’s Corner.

  • 02

    The meet inside Biggin Hill

The board goes up before the first passengers come through the Biggin Hill doors, and stays up until you are in front of it and pointed at Sydenham. Then the bags are taken and the drive into Sydenham begins, which is the whole of the arrangement.

  • 03

Size the job before you enquire from Sydenham

Prices are per vehicle rather than per passenger, so a Sydenham collection with four people in it costs what the same car would cost with one. Luggage changes the class of car sent to Sydenham, not the arithmetic.

  • 04

    Second pick-ups in Crystal Palace

Where the day has no fixed shape, book the car from the first address in Sydenham and release it when you have finished. Everything between that and Dartmouth Road can be decided as it happens.

  • 05

Your Sydenham booking, unaffected by the airline

On the way out of Sydenham the checking runs the other way. We confirm the Biggin Hill terminal against your flight number the day before the car leaves Sydenham, because airlines move between buildings and a satnav is the last thing to find out.

  • 06

Luggage sized before the Sydenham booking

The chauffeur lifts and loads at the Sydenham kerb. In the rain on Kirkdale with a laptop bag under one arm, that is worth more than most of the things chauffeur companies get compared on.

08Terminals

What the drive to Biggin Hill involves

The figures are the ones we plan our own cars around in Sydenham. They are not padded to look impressive, and not trimmed to make Biggin Hill look closer to Sydenham than it is. On a wet Monday out of Sydenham, the higher end of each range is the honest one.
Biggin Hill

Departures from Sydenham, and what time to be ready

Send the airline as well as the flight number when you book from Sydenham. Terminals move, and taking the wrong spur off Kirkdale at Biggin Hill can cost fifteen minutes at the far end of a trolley.

Early departures are the ordinary case in Sydenham. A 4am pick-up from Sydenham is booked the same way as a midday one, and the empty road that early is the closest thing to a guaranteed drive time we ever get.

The kerb outside your Sydenham door

LF-02The kerb outside your Sydenham door

The kerb outside your Sydenham door

The car arrives before the time on your confirmation and parks where it is legal to stand, which near Dartmouth Road is not always outside the door. The chauffeur sends one short message naming where in Sydenham the car is standing, and then waits. You are not being timed, and nothing on the Sydenham booking starts running.

Leaving Sydenham carries most of the variables. Once the car is past Kirkdale the rest of the run is arithmetic, and the arithmetic was done before your collection time was set.

  • Collections from Mayow Park arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
  • The car holds on Dartmouth Road when the kerb outside your door will not take it
  • Cases carried from the door in Sydenham rather than watched
  • Chauffeur briefed on the Sydenham address before the car sets off

Getting home to Sydenham after a long flight

Immigration queues at Biggin Hill are the wildcard nobody can price into a Sydenham booking. They are also why waiting runs from touchdown rather than from a scheduled landing, so a slow hall at Biggin Hill costs a Sydenham booking nothing at all.

A stop on the way in is easy to arrange: someone dropped in Crystal Palace, a detour past Mayow Park, or a supermarket before you reach an empty fridge. Put it on the Sydenham booking and it appears in the price.

  • Private arrivals met airside at the Biggin Hill handling agent, then driven to Sydenham
  • No telephone call from an Biggin Hill car park before the run to Sydenham
  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Sydenham
  • The same chauffeur who drove you out of Sydenham

Suite and Signature classes are for arrivals that are themselves part of the event: a wedding at Mayow Park, a milestone dinner, a photograph that outlives the day. For a five o'clock run out of Sydenham to Biggin Hill they are unnecessary.

Two saloons leaving Sydenham at the same minute usually beats one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. Everyone gets a door, the luggage splits, and neither car starts the Sydenham day already behind.

A collection at Lower Sydenham has a small choreography to it: the right entrance, the right side of the barrier, and a chauffeur standing on the concourse rather than sending a map pin and hoping.

For a journey into Sydenham where rail covers the distance and the car covers the ends, book both legs at once. The quotation then names the collection at Lower Sydenham and the run into Sydenham as a single price.

When a single transfer will not cover Sydenham

LF-06When a single transfer will not cover Sydenham

When a single transfer will not cover Sydenham

Days built round Sydenham tend to sprawl. Hourly hire absorbs that: the chauffeur waits near Dartmouth Road, the boot holds whatever you are carrying, and you stop planning the transport between the things you are actually doing.

Waiting near Dartmouth Road is not idle time from our side. The chauffeur is watching the clock, the traffic on Kirkdale and your next address, so the car is moving before you have finished asking for it.

For a run out of the SE26 district to Biggin Hill, add the flight number. It gives us the terminal at Biggin Hill, the landing time, and whether the collection in Sydenham needs to be earlier than the arithmetic alone suggests.

The confirmation names the chauffeur, the vehicle and the registration before the Sydenham collection. On the morning itself you get one message, when the car is standing wherever Kirkdale allows it to stand.

17Answers

Sydenham chauffeur questions

Everything below applies to Sydenham and to the addresses immediately around it.

Which Sydenham station will the car come to?

Whichever you name, and it is worth naming. Sydenham is down on Sydenham Road among the shops. Sydenham Hill is nearly a mile away and a good deal higher, tucked in a cutting off College Road with almost no room outside. They are not walkable alternatives to one another.

Can a larger vehicle get up Kirkdale?

Yes. The hill is steep but the road is wide and most of the houses have driveways, so a people carrier can turn and load without holding anyone up. The tighter turnings are the short residential streets off it, and we check the approach for those when the booking is taken.

How long is Sydenham to Gatwick?

About 21 miles and usually 40 to 75 minutes. The car goes over the ridge and down the A23 through Croydon, or east to the M25 when Croydon is heavy. Before seven in the morning that run is consistently at the fast end, which is why we push early flights earlier still.

Do you cover Lower Sydenham and the Bell Green side?

Yes, the flat ground down toward the Pool River and the retail park is part of the same area. The roads there are wide and modern, so access is easy. It is a different world from the hill, and journey times from the two ends of SE26 can differ by ten minutes in the peak.
