Chauffeur service in St Ives — summary

Booked from St Ives for the journeys that bracket a flight or a meeting: an early car to Bristol, a late one back, or a chauffeur held for the day while you move between The Island, Porthminster Beach and wherever the diary sends you next. St Ives is in Cornwall, and A3071 governs how the car gets in and out of it. Indicative drive from St Ives to Bristol is 190-260 minutes, about 175 miles. Waiting at Bristol, the meet inside the hall and flight tracking are part of the St Ives transfer rather than extras bolted on afterwards. No standing price list is published; the figure is confirmed on a written quotation for your own St Ives booking.

01Setting out from St Ives

Chauffeur service in St Ives

St Ives was built for boats and pack ponies, not vehicles. The Digey, Fore Street and the lanes around the harbour are too narrow for a car in any practical sense, and the sensible arrangement is to collect from the edge and let you walk down. Everyone who lives here does the same thing.

There is also only one road in. The A3074 comes down from Lelant and Carbis Bay, and on a summer afternoon it queues. The branch line from St Erth is genuinely the better way into the town in August, and we run a good many relays to and from that station rather than fighting the hill.

03The area

Reading St Ives before the pick-up

From A3071 inwards, this is what the car is dealing with.

Granite, whitewash and steep cobbled lanes running down to a harbour beach. Porthmeor faces the Atlantic on the other side with the Tate above it. Above the town, Trenwith sits on the hill with the main car park and the practical vehicle access. Carbis Bay, a mile east, is a different proposition: hotels with drives and a road a car can actually use.

04Demand

The work that comes out of St Ives

Business, family and the occasional long night out of St Ives.

Gallery and holiday visitors year-round, with a summer that is relentless. Hotel and wedding work, particularly at Carbis Bay. Long-distance arrivals: guests flying into Newquay or coming down on the sleeper to Penzance and needing the last leg. And a steady trade in day trips out to Zennor, Land's End and the north coast on roads that reward a driver who knows them.

05Road time

The hours that matter in St Ives

The timing we would use if the booking out of St Ives were our own.

From late morning through the afternoon in July and August the A3074 queues from Carbis Bay down, and the town car parks fill before midday. Saturday changeover is the worst. Out of season it is quick and quiet. For Newquay Airport allow an hour; for Bristol Airport, three and a half hours; for Heathrow, five hours or more.

06The kerb

Where a car can legally stop in St Ives

Kerb space in St Ives is finite. Here is how a collection on A3071 works with that.

Cars do not go into the old town, and we would not try. Collections happen at Trenwith car park, the top of the hill, or at the harbour end where the road allows. Carbis Bay hotels have their own drives. St Erth station has a car park and is the practical rail interchange for the branch. Porthmeor and the Tate end have very limited vehicle access.

Collection notes for St Ives

  • 01The old town lanes take no cars at all, so we collect from Trenwith car park or the top of the hill.
  • 02There is one road in on the A3074 and it queues from late morning through the summer afternoon.
  • 03St Erth is the practical rail interchange, and in August the branch train beats the road into town.
  • 04Carbis Bay hotels have their own drives, which makes them far easier to collect from than the town itself.

07Included as standard

The things nobody should have to ask for in St Ives

  • 01

Tracked from the tail number into Bristol

Tracking a flight into Bristol from St Ives is quiet work. You will normally see one message, giving the time the chauffeur now expects to be standing at the Bristol barrier, and nothing after that until you are in the car for St Ives.

  • 02

Luggage, properly handled in St Ives

The return leg into St Ives follows the same rule in reverse. Whatever left St Ives plus whatever was bought has to fit, so if the way home is heavier than the way out, put it on the booking.

  • 03

One car, one price, two St Ives addresses

Short stops on the way out of St Ives are worth mentioning when you enquire: a pharmacy, a school gate, ten minutes at Carbis Bay to collect something. They cost nothing to plan into a St Ives booking and time to improvise.

  • 04

The driver, not just a car, in St Ives

If the collection in St Ives is genuinely awkward, a gated entrance or a courtyard behind The Island, the chauffeur will have looked at it before the day rather than at the moment it starts to matter.

  • 05

The welcome on the Bristol concourse

Your chauffeur parks at Bristol, walks in, and stands at the arrivals barrier with a board naming you and St Ives. Nobody calls you from a Bristol car park and asks you to find a pillar before the run to St Ives. The luggage goes on the trolley to the car, and the car is already pointed at A3071.

  • 06

The written quotation for St Ives

Extra time on an hourly St Ives booking is charged at the published rate and confirmed in writing afterwards. It is not applied at the roadside in St Ives and it is not a penalty.

08Terminals

St Ives to Bristol

Reading the table: the drive is door to terminal from a St Ives address, and the mileage is what the car will actually cover on A3071 and the roads beyond it. Return legs into St Ives are met inside the arrivals hall at Bristol.

Departures from St Ives, and what time to be ready

A pre-dawn departure out of St Ives is easier to plan than a nine o'clock one. A3071 is empty, the drive sits close to its lower bound, and the only variable left is how long you take to reach the car.

Early departures are the ordinary case in St Ives. A 4am pick-up from St Ives is booked the same way as a midday one, and the empty road that early is the closest thing to a guaranteed drive time we ever get.

The chauffeur reaches St Ives with a margin, parks, and then does nothing at all. That waiting on a St Ives street is deliberate. It is what turns a time printed on a confirmation into a car genuinely standing in St Ives when the door opens.

Leaving St Ives carries most of the variables. Once the car is past A3071 the rest of the run is arithmetic, and the arithmetic was done before your collection time was set.

  • One message naming exactly where the car is standing in St Ives
  • Luggage loaded at the St Ives kerb, doors held, no waiting on the pavement
  • The stopping point on A3071 agreed before the morning rather than during it
  • No meter and no waiting charge on a residential collection in St Ives

The board goes up before the Bristol doors begin producing passengers, and comes down when you are standing in front of it with St Ives ahead of you. None of that depends on you having a working phone between Bristol and St Ives.

From the barrier it is a short walk to the car and then an indicative 190-260 minutes back to St Ives, usually by A3071. The boot takes the cases, the cabin is warm, and nobody asks you a question between Bristol and St Ives.

  • Bristol car park found and paid for before the St Ives chauffeur walks in

Where the journey out of St Ives is short, the choice matters less than people think. Where it is 175 miles of road from St Ives, the seat you spend that time in is worth a moment of thought.

Two saloons leaving St Ives at the same minute usually beats one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. Everyone gets a door, the luggage splits, and neither car starts the St Ives day already behind.

The awkward part of arriving at Lelant is not the walk. It is the walk with luggage, in the dark, into a St Ives taxi queue with eleven people already in it.

Rail into St Ives and a car onward to Bristol is a common shape, and it is one booking rather than two. The chauffeur holds the Lelant train number and the Bristol flight number together.

As-directed driving around The Island

Some St Ives days do not fit a transfer. Three appointments between The Island and Porthminster Beach, a lunch that overruns, a change of plan at four: booking the car by the hour costs less thought than booking four separate journeys and hoping they line up.

Where the chauffeur waits depends on which St Ives street you are on. Near Porthminster Beach that might be a side road two minutes away rather than the front door, and the message you get says which. When you are ready the car is at the St Ives kerb before you have finished your coat.

Send the St Ives details however suits you. WhatsApp and email both arrive in the same place, and a St Ives enquiry gets a written figure back rather than a call-back offering a range.

The car is allocated to St Ives only once the price is agreed. That order matters: no car is sent to The Island on your behalf without you seeing a figure first.

17Answers

St Ives chauffeur questions

The practical ones: where the car waits in St Ives, when it leaves, and what it costs.

Can a car reach my accommodation in the old town?

Almost certainly not to the door. The Digey, Fore Street and the harbour lanes are granite-walled and barely wide enough for a handcart, let alone a saloon. We collect from Trenwith car park or the top of the hill and carry bags down or up with you, which is what everybody who lives here does.

Is the branch line from St Erth worth using?

In summer, absolutely. The train runs along the estuary and into the town in about ten minutes and it does not queue. On an August afternoon, when the A3074 is backed up from Carbis Bay, it is comfortably the faster way in. We are happy to run you to St Erth and meet you at the other end another day.

When is St Ives worth avoiding by car?

Between about eleven and five on any July or August day, and on summer Saturdays in particular, when holiday changeover fills the single approach road and the car parks are full by midday. Early morning and evening are fine. Out of season it is a quick and easy town to work in.

Can you take us to Land's End and Zennor?

Yes, and the B3306 coast road out through Zennor and Pendeen is one of the great drives in England, narrow and slow with the Atlantic on one side. Land's End is about forty minutes that way, or half an hour by the A30. We treat it as an unhurried half day rather than a run.
