Chauffeur hire in St Helens and the WA postcodes

Glass built this town and two motorways now bound it, which is why so much of the work here is long-distance rather than local.

Chauffeur service in St Helens — summary

Chauffeur service in St Helens, Merseyside, booked mainly for airport runs, hourly hire and long-distance driving. The car is held where it can legally stand near Sankey Valley Park, the chauffeur walks in to meet you, and the boot is loaded before you reach the kerb. From here Liverpool John Lennon is an indicative 25-45 minutes, roughly 15 miles on A58; M6 junction 23 carries the return. Regular collection points include St Helens Hospital, the World of Glass and Lea Green, and the same standard of welcome applies whether the pick-up is a house in St Helens or a hotel forecourt. No standing price list is published, and a written quotation confirms the price for your journey out of St Helens.

Chauffeur service in St Helens

St Helens sits in the gap between the M6 and the M62 with the East Lancashire Road running through the middle, so getting out is easy in every direction. Liverpool Airport is about fifteen miles south-west, Manchester thirty miles east. For a town without a mainline station of its own, that road position does a great deal of useful work.

The other thing worth knowing is Haydock Park, on the borough's eastern edge beside M6 junction 23. On a raceday the junction and the A580 approach fill for hours, and a journey that normally takes twenty minutes can take an hour. We check the fixture list before quoting anything that passes that way.

03The area

Turnings, one-ways and A58

Roads, kerbs and turning circles in St Helens.

Wide arterial roads and a compact centre. The A570 Linkway takes traffic around the town and the A58 heads north-east toward Wigan. The old industrial sites have largely become retail and housing, and a colossal sculpture of a face rises out of the ground at Sutton Manor where the colliery used to be. Out toward Rainford and Billinge the land rises and the lanes narrow. The centre itself is easy enough, with a bus station, a shopping area and the rugby ground close together.

04Demand

The St Helens diary, in outline

What St Helens books when the itinerary already has a flight in the middle of it.

Rugby league is a serious business here and matchdays fill the ground at Peasley Cross. Whiston Hospital, just over the boundary, takes a large catchment. The glass industry still generates technical visitors. Haydock Park brings racegoers, hospitality and the airport runs that follow the next morning. Beyond that the everyday work is residential airport transfers and long-distance business travel, helped enormously by having both motorways within ten minutes.

05Road time

When to leave St Helens

Counting backwards from check-in at Liverpool John Lennon to a door in St Helens.

Away from race days the roads are good. The M6 southbound queues from Haydock in the morning, the M62 at Rainhill is heavy at peak, and the A580 carries a great deal of freight. On a raceday, junction 23 and everything feeding it becomes a car park from about two hours before the first race until well after the last. We route by junction 24 or the A58 instead, and we say so when the booking is made.

06The kerb

Doors, boots and the St Helens pavement

Where we hold the car when A58 will not take a stationary one.

Straightforward almost everywhere. The stadium has parking on the site and marshals on matchdays. The town centre has short-stay bays and multi-storeys. Housing estates have off-street parking as a rule. Haydock Park has its own car parks and a set-down area, but on a busy day the marshalling changes and we agree the collection point with you before you go in, because standing at a gate ringing a driver is not a plan.

Collection notes for St Helens

  • 01Check the Haydock fixture list before travelling east; on a raceday we route by junction 24 or the A58 instead of 23.
  • 02At the racecourse we agree the collection point before you go in, because the marshalling changes through the afternoon.
  • 03The rugby ground has on-site parking and marshals, so match collections are simple if we pick a corner in advance.
  • 04St Helens Central has a small forecourt; for an evening arrival the driver waits in the car park and comes forward.

  • 01

Knows which end of A58 to avoid

Every chauffeur sent to St Helens is licensed for private hire and drives one of our vehicles rather than their own. What is more useful to you is that they know where a long car can turn round near Taylor Park.

  • 02

    The Liverpool John Lennon handover

The board goes up before the first passengers come through the Liverpool John Lennon doors, and stays up until you are in front of it and pointed at St Helens. Then the bags are taken and the drive into St Helens begins, which is the whole of the arrangement.

  • 03

What the St Helens price includes

Prices are per vehicle rather than per passenger, so a St Helens collection with four people in it costs what the same car would cost with one. Luggage changes the class of car sent to St Helens, not the arithmetic.

  • 04

Waiting at Liverpool John Lennon from touchdown

Where the day has no fixed shape, book the car from the first address in St Helens and release it when you have finished. Everything between that and Sankey Valley Park can be decided as it happens.

  • 05

Lea Green arrivals tracked as well

On the way out of St Helens the checking runs the other way. We confirm the Liverpool John Lennon terminal against your flight number the day before the car leaves St Helens, because airlines move between buildings and a satnav is the last thing to find out.

  • 06

Skis, clubs and flight cases from St Helens

The chauffeur lifts and loads at the St Helens kerb. In the rain on A58 with a laptop bag under one arm, that is worth more than most of the things chauffeur companies get compared on.

09In detail

The part of a St Helens trip nobody plans

The ten minutes before you leave St Helens

LF-01The ten minutes before you leave St Helens

The ten minutes before you leave St Helens

The car arrives before the time on your confirmation and parks where it is legal to stand, which near Sankey Valley Park is not always outside the door. The chauffeur sends one short message naming where in St Helens the car is standing, and then waits. You are not being timed, and nothing on the St Helens booking starts running.

The handover in St Helens takes about forty seconds and then the car is gone. Where the run continues from St Helens to Liverpool John Lennon, the chauffeur will tell you the indicative arrival once and then leave you alone with it.

  • One message naming exactly where the car is standing in St Helens
  • Luggage loaded at the St Helens kerb, doors held, no waiting on the pavement
  • The stopping point on A58 agreed before the morning rather than during it
  • No meter and no waiting charge on a residential collection in St Helens
The outbound run to Liverpool John Lennon

The outbound run to Liverpool John Lennon

Most missed flights out of Liverpool John Lennon are lost somewhere in the WA9 district rather than in the air. Out of St Helens the ground problem is A58 between about seven and half past nine, and the answer is leaving before it rather than driving harder through it.

Business travellers leaving St Helens usually want the car to move the moment the door shuts. Families usually want two minutes on the St Helens pavement first. The chauffeur takes that cue from you rather than from a St Helens timetable.

Getting home to St Helens after a long flight

LF-03Getting home to St Helens after a long flight

Getting home to St Helens after a long flight

Forty minutes before you touch down at Liverpool John Lennon the car has left St Helens and is already off the road. What happens after that is a walk across Liverpool John Lennon, a wait, a name board and an indicative 25-45 minutes to St Helens, none of it visible from your seat.

On the way back the chauffeur gives the indicative arrival in St Helens once and then leaves you alone with it. If the arrival into St Helens moves, you hear that once as well, with a number rather than an apology.

  • Private arrivals met airside at the Liverpool John Lennon handling agent, then driven to St Helens
  • No telephone call from an Liverpool John Lennon car park before the run to St Helens
  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to St Helens
  • The same chauffeur who drove you out of St Helens

Hourly hire around St Helens

LF-04Hourly hire around St Helens

Hourly hire around St Helens

Days built round St Helens tend to sprawl. Hourly hire absorbs that: the chauffeur waits near Sankey Valley Park, the boot holds whatever you are carrying, and you stop planning the transport between the things you are actually doing.

Common shapes for this work: a morning of meetings, a day between Sankey Valley Park and Wigan, a wedding where the car is needed at both ends, or an evening that begins at St Helens Hospital and ends somewhere nobody has decided yet.

Cabin, saloon, SUV or MPV in St Helens

Saloon or MPV out of St Helens is usually a luggage question rather than a comfort one. The boot of a saloon takes two large cases with three people aboard; beyond that the V-Class earns its keep on any run out of St Helens.

If you are undecided, describe the journey: passengers, cases, where it starts in St Helens and where it ends. We will recommend a class for St Helens, and the recommendation is usually cheaper than the one people expect.

Rail, road and paperwork in St Helens

The last mile from Lea Green

LF-06The last mile from Lea Green

The last mile from Lea Green

Some journeys into St Helens genuinely are best done by rail for the long middle. What they still need is somebody at the end of the Lea Green platform, and that is the part no timetable covers.

Where Lea Green has more than one entrance, the booking names which. In St Helens that single detail saves more time than any route decision the chauffeur makes afterwards.

How to book a chauffeur in St Helens

How to book a chauffeur in St Helens

Booking from St Helens is deliberately short. Date, time, St Helens address, destination, passengers, luggage. If it is a run to Liverpool John Lennon, add the flight. We do the rest and send the St Helens price back in writing.

Regular bookings out of St Helens run on the same written basis as one-off journeys. Each St Helens journey is priced before it happens rather than totted up somewhere and presented afterwards.

17Answers

St Helens chauffeur questions

Everything below applies to St Helens and to the addresses immediately around it.

How much does a Haydock raceday affect journeys?

A great deal. Junction 23 of the M6 and the A580 approach fill from about two hours before the first race and stay difficult well after the last, so a twenty-minute journey can become an hour. We check the fixture list at the quoting stage and route around it.

Which airport is nearest to St Helens?

Liverpool, at around fifteen miles south-west by way of the A570 and the M62 or the A58. Manchester is thirty miles east and carries the long-haul. Both are easy from here because the town sits between two motorways with quick access to each.

Do you cover Rainford, Billinge and the outlying villages?

Yes. The land rises out that way and the lanes narrow, particularly around Billinge Hill, so for an early collection the driver looks at the approach beforehand. Rainford is straightforward and close to the A570 for a quick run to either motorway.

Is there a mainline station in St Helens?

Not for fast intercity services. St Helens Central and St Helens Junction both serve local and regional lines, so for a London train most people go to Wigan North Western, Warrington Bank Quay or Liverpool Lime Street. We drive whichever your ticket needs.
