Chauffeur service in Rochester, ME1 to ME3, castle and cathedral

Rochester's High Street runs for the best part of a mile between the castle and the station and is too narrow at almost every point for a car to stop on.

Chauffeur service in Rochester — summary

Two kinds of booking come out of Rochester. The first is a flight: a car to Biggin Hill on an indicative 35-60 minutes, roughly 25 miles, timed backwards from when check-in closes rather than forwards from a Rochester postcode. The second is a day with too many fixed points to book as separate journeys, where the chauffeur holds the car near Chatham and moves when you do. Both are quoted per vehicle, in writing, before a car is allocated to Rochester. Coverage runs on to Chatham and Gillingham, and Biggin Hill, London City, London Southend and Gatwick are all driven from here. No standing price list is published, and nothing on a Rochester booking is metered.

01Rochester first

Chauffeur service in Rochester

The old city sits on the eastern bank of the Medway with the bridge at one end and the station at the other. In between, the High Street is a conservation area, part-pedestrian and lined with buildings that come right to the kerb. The A2 crosses to the north and the M2 to the south, and both are how anything leaves.

Heritage brings the visitors and the festivals bring the crowds, twice a year in costume and with roads closed for it. The rest of the diary is airport transfers, business collections along the riverside and a share of the Medway towns' hospital work. Rochester is the smallest of the three towns and the hardest to park in.

03The area

Rochester from behind the windscreen

A working description of Rochester, not a tourist one.

Compact and old, with a castle keep at one end of the High Street and a Norman cathedral beside it. Vehicle access along the street is restricted and enforced; the parallel roads are narrow and residential. Star Hill climbs away to the east. Across the river Strood is more modern and much easier to drive, and the two are joined by a bridge that queues at peak.

04Demand

The reasons a car leaves Rochester

Early flights, late returns and the days in between, out of Rochester.

Visitor and heritage work, plus the ordinary business of a Medway town. Weddings at the cathedral and the castle grounds, festival weekends, and a steady base of airport transfers where Gatwick is nearly fifty miles away. Riverside offices and the university campus nearby add corporate and term-date journeys.

05Road time

Peak, off-peak and Corporation Street

How we set the collection time in Rochester, and why it is earlier than you expect.

The bridge over the Medway and the Strood approach are the local delays, worst between eight and nine. Festival weekends close the High Street entirely and fill every car park by mid-morning. The M2 at Junction 1 backs up in the evening. For a Gatwick flight we allow an hour and three-quarters from ME1.

06The kerb

Where the car holds around Chatham

One message, naming the exact spot on Corporation Street. That is the whole of the Rochester system.

The High Street is not a place to wait, so collections happen at either end, on the streets behind or from the car parks near the station. Rochester station has a set-down that works well. For a cathedral wedding we agree a point on the Esplanade side. Residential roads up Star Hill are steep and narrow with no turning space.

Collection notes for Rochester

  • 01Vehicle access along the High Street is restricted and enforced, so we collect at either end or from a car park.
  • 02For a cathedral wedding we agree a set-down and a return point on the Esplanade side in advance.
  • 03Festival weekends close the street and fill the car parks by mid-morning, and departures allow for it.
  • 04Star Hill and the roads above it are steep and narrow with no turning space, so we arrive facing outwards.

07Included as standard

Included as standard in Rochester, not as an upgrade

  • 01

Where the chauffeur stands at Biggin Hill

A meet is a person inside Biggin Hill, holding a board with your name on it and a car pointed at Rochester. Not a pin on a map and not a call from the roadside on Corporation Street. The distinction sounds small until you are the one at Biggin Hill with three cases, a dead phone and a Rochester address to reach.

  • 02

    Written, not estimated, for Rochester

Nothing about the Rochester price should be a surprise afterwards. The quotation is the reference point: time, address in Rochester, vehicle, figure. If any of those changes, a new Rochester quotation is sent.

  • 03

What the boot takes on a Biggin Hill run

The first question on any Rochester booking is how many cases, because that decides the vehicle. Everything else about a Rochester journey is easier to change afterwards than the size of the boot.

  • 04

The clock moves, the Rochester price does not

The point of tracking is that the chauffeur's start time in Rochester is ours to move and not yours. You do not message us from the aisle, and no Rochester booking is charged for the hour the airline lost before it ever reached Biggin Hill.

  • 05

    Holding the car in Rochester

Stops along Corporation Street are built into the quotation. A pharmacy, a school gate in Rochester or twenty minutes at Upnor Castle all go into the plan before the car sets off.

  • 06

One chauffeur for the whole Rochester journey

The knowledge that earns its keep in Rochester is not the fastest route. It is which kerb tolerates a stationary car at half past seven, where the permit bays stop, and which entrance at Upnor Castle is used for loading.

08Terminals

Terminals, drive times and Corporation Street

Distances are road distances, not straight lines, and the times allow for the way Corporation Street behaves at the hour you are actually travelling. Nothing here is a guarantee; it is what we would plan around if the Rochester booking were ours.

Hourly hire, Rochester to Chatham

LF-01Hourly hire, Rochester to Chatham

Hourly hire, Rochester to Chatham

The minimum block is four hours in most classes and six in the largest, stated on your quotation rather than discovered on a Rochester pavement afterwards. In Rochester that buys a morning with the car standing by.

Long Rochester days are quoted with the chauffeur's own hours in mind, and where a day runs from dawn to midnight we will say plainly whether that is one chauffeur or two.

Finding each other on Corporation Street

LF-02Finding each other on Corporation Street

Finding each other on Corporation Street

Your confirmation names the chauffeur, the vehicle and the registration, and the car is on the Rochester street early. If the only legal space is round the corner from the Medway bridge, that is where it will be, and you will know before you put your coat on.

The route out of Rochester is chosen for the hour rather than for the map. Sometimes that means the long way round past Restoration House, and the chauffeur takes it without announcing how clever it was.

  • A second collection in Chatham priced into the same booking
  • Engine off and boot open before you reach the car in Rochester
  • Indicative 35-60 minutes from Rochester to Biggin Hill, given once and then left alone
  • Pick-ups at Rochester made on the side that tolerates a stationary car

If your address sits nearer Chatham than the middle of Rochester, the drive is a different length. We say so and quote it, rather than using the middle of Rochester and hoping the difference is small.

Where somebody is staying behind, the car carries on afterwards: back into Rochester, on to Gillingham, or held for a later collection. It remains one Rochester booking and one price either way.

The minimum hire block matters as much as the hourly figure when you are sizing a day around the Medway bridge. Both of them are on the card above, and both apply in Rochester.

LF-04Arrivals at Biggin Hill, and what happens at the barrier

Arrivals at Biggin Hill, and what happens at the barrier

We ask for the flight number rather than the landing time into Biggin Hill, because only one of those tells us when to leave Rochester. From it we know the aircraft, the terminal, when to leave Rochester, and when to start the walk in from the car park.

Some returns into Rochester finish at a hotel rather than a house. The chauffeur takes the cases into Rochester Cathedral, hands them over at the desk, and the booking closes there instead of on the kerb outside it.

  • Indicative 35-60 minutes back into Rochester
  • Waiting from touchdown at Biggin Hill built into the Rochester transfer
  • Bags taken from the Biggin Hill trolley to the boot and on to Rochester

Rail into Rochester, car for the rest

LF-05Rail into Rochester, car for the rest

Rail into Rochester, car for the rest

Rochester is the usual meeting point for anyone coming into Rochester by rail. The car waits where Rochester allows it, and the chauffeur walks in to find you if the platform is a long way from the road.

If the train into Rochester is cancelled entirely, the car can meet you wherever you end up instead. That flexibility is easier to arrange in advance than at the moment it is needed, so mention it when you book the Rochester leg.

Which vehicle for Rochester, and why

LF-06Which vehicle for Rochester, and why

Which vehicle for Rochester, and why

Where the journey out of Rochester is short, the choice matters less than people think. Where it is 25 miles of road from Rochester, the seat you spend that time in is worth a moment of thought.

Two saloons leaving Rochester at the same minute usually beats one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. Everyone gets a door, the luggage splits, and neither car starts the Rochester day already behind.

For a run out of the ME1 district to Biggin Hill, add the flight number. It gives us the terminal at Biggin Hill, the landing time, and whether the collection in Rochester needs to be earlier than the arithmetic alone suggests.

The confirmation names the chauffeur, the vehicle and the registration before the Rochester collection. On the morning itself you get one message, when the car is standing wherever Corporation Street allows it to stand.

17Answers

Rochester chauffeur questions

The questions Corporation Street and Biggin Hill between them tend to raise.

Can a chauffeur wait on Rochester High Street?

No. Vehicle access is restricted along most of it and enforced, and even where a car may pass there is nowhere to stand. We collect at either end, on the streets behind or from a car park near the station, and the chauffeur walks in for the bags.

What happens during the Rochester festivals?

The High Street closes, the car parks fill by mid-morning and the surrounding roads slow with them. It happens twice a year and it is worth planning around. We set a collection point outside the closures and allow extra time for anything leaving that day.

Do you drive to weddings at Rochester Cathedral?

Yes. Cars cannot wait outside, so we set down close by and agree a return point on the Esplanade side where there is room. For a wedding party we plan the sequence in advance rather than having several cars looking for the same piece of kerb.

How far is Rochester from Gatwick?

About forty-eight miles and an hour to an hour and a half, on the M2, the M25 and the M23. Some routes use the Dartford Crossing, which carries a charge. We allow an hour and three-quarters for a morning flight, which covers the M25 having a poor day.
