Chauffeur hire in Reading, from RG1 out to Thames Valley Park

Reading has an inner distribution road wrapped around the middle of it, and knowing which side of that ring you are standing on is most of the job.

Chauffeur service in Reading — summary

Reading sits next to Wokingham, Bracknell and Henley-on-Thames, and bookings frequently pick up in two of them on the same run. Chauffeur service in Reading covers airport transfers, station collections, hourly hire and long-distance work, with the drive to Farnborough taking an indicative 30-50 minutes over about 19 miles. The chauffeur finds the legal stopping point near Forbury Gardens before the booked time, sends one message naming it, and waits. Flights into Farnborough are tracked from the tail number, so a delay moves our clock rather than your Reading booking. Vehicles run from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, all quoted per journey rather than per passenger, and the Reading quotation confirms the figure.

01Starting in Reading

Chauffeur service in Reading

The IDR is a loop you cannot cross in a straight line, so a pickup two hundred yards from the station can take five minutes to reach from the wrong direction. Add a station rebuilt with north and south entrances that behave differently, and a bus-only stretch through the middle, and an address on its own is rarely enough.

The work is corporate first. Thames Valley Park, Green Park and the offices along the M4 produce Heathrow runs, visitor collections and full days for people doing three meetings in three towns. Then there is the university, the Hexagon and, for one week each summer, a festival that reorganises the roads north of the river entirely.

03The area

What A33 relief road does to a timetable

The street plan of Reading, described by someone reversing into it.

Two rivers, one ring road and a great many one-way streets. The Thames closes the town off to the north with only Caversham Bridge and Reading Bridge to cross it, both of which queue; the Kennet cuts through the middle. Friar Street and Broad Street are pedestrian, so the practical kerbs are on Station Road, Forbury Road and the streets hanging off the IDR. West of the centre the A4 is fast until it is not.

04Demand

Who we collect from Royal Berkshire Hospital

The journeys Reading books most, and the reasons behind them.

Business bookings run the diary. Thames Valley Park and Green Park book cars for visiting executives, board days and airport runs; the technology offices along the corridor generate roadshow work into London. Add the Royal Berkshire Hospital, the university's conference trade and a steady stream of racegoers heading out to Ascot and Newbury on a Saturday.

05Road time

The clock on a Reading booking

The hours Reading loses to traffic, and the ones it does not.

Caversham Bridge northbound after four is the classic Reading delay, and the A33 southbound towards Junction 11 goes with it. Mornings tighten from half past seven, particularly the A329 in from Woodley. Festival weekend in August changes everything north of the Thames for three days. For a Terminal 5 flight we usually leave a central address a hundred minutes ahead.

06The kerb

The handover point in Reading

Getting from the door of Royal Berkshire Hospital into the car without a phone call.

Reading station has a proper drop-off on the north side, off Vastern Road, and it is far better than trying to reach the south forecourt at commuting time. The Oracle car parks give a covered handover in bad weather. Business parks have visitor bays at the gatehouse. In the centre almost every kerb is loading, taxi or bus, so we set down and move rather than wait.

Collection notes for Reading

  • 01We use the north-side drop-off on Vastern Road for the station rather than the south forecourt, which is slow at peak.
  • 02Give us the building name at Thames Valley Park or Green Park; both are large sites with gatehouse visitor bays.
  • 03Broad Street and Friar Street are pedestrian, so central collections happen from Station Road or the streets off the IDR.
  • 04For Caversham addresses we allow for the bridge, which queues northbound from mid-afternoon onwards.

07Included as standard

Included whether you book from Reading or Wokingham

  • 01

Farnborough to Reading, door to door

If you are travelling with someone who needs help, say so when you book the return into Reading. The chauffeur meets you further inside Farnborough, and at the Reading end the car goes to the closest legal point rather than the convenient one.

  • 02

The aircraft, not the timetable, into Farnborough

Waiting at Farnborough is counted by us rather than added to a Reading invoice. A chauffeur sitting at Farnborough for ninety minutes because a connection failed is our problem, not a line on the Reading quotation.

  • 03

A33 relief road in the rain, already driven

On hourly work the chauffeur stays with you for the whole Reading day. By the third stop they have worked out where in Reading you like to be collected and how long you actually take, and the car is at the kerb before you reach it.

  • 04

    What a Reading booking costs

If you cancel, the terms are the ones already on the quotation, set out in plain English before you committed to the Reading booking rather than buried somewhere you have to go looking.

  • 05

What goes in the boot before A33 relief road

Roof boxes and trailers are not part of a Reading booking. What we can do is send a larger vehicle to Reading, or two cars, and quote both so the choice is yours rather than ours.

  • 06

Waiting, drop-offs and stops in Reading

Roadshow days are the extreme version: five or six stops between Forbury Gardens and Bracknell, a car that never leaves you, and a chauffeur who has the next address before you have left the last one.

08Terminals

Drive times out of Reading

These are drives we make regularly from Reading, timed door to terminal rather than motorway junction to motorway junction. Add the walk from your Reading door to the car and the queue at the Farnborough drop-off, then work backwards from the check-in desk. We do that sum for you on the written Reading quotation.

Which class turns up in Reading

Cabin class is the working default in Reading: two passengers, two cases, an early flight, and nothing about the car that asks to be noticed on the way out of the street.

For an arrival that is itself part of the event — a wedding at The Hexagon, a milestone dinner, a photograph that will outlive the day — the Suite and Signature classes exist. For the run out of Reading to Farnborough at half past five in the morning, they are not necessary and we will say so.

Early starts from Reading

LF-02Early starts from Reading

Early starts from Reading

Weekend departures out of Reading behave differently from weekday ones. A33 relief road is quieter and the Farnborough drop-off is busier, and the two do not cancel each other out as neatly as people expect them to.

If there is a group leaving Reading together, two cars leaving at the same minute is usually calmer than one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. We will say which we think is right when we quote the Reading collection.

Coming home to Reading

LF-03Coming home to Reading

Coming home to Reading

Flight tracking runs from departure, so a hold over Farnborough or a diversion changes when the car leaves Reading, quietly. You come through the Farnborough doors and someone is there with the car for Reading, which is the whole of what you should have to think about.

The route into Reading is chosen at the airport exit and not before it. What A33 relief road is doing at that moment is knowable; what it was doing when the booking was made is not.

  • Trains into Reading watched the same way as flights
  • Private arrivals met airside at the Farnborough handling agent, then driven to Reading
  • No telephone call from an Farnborough car park before the run to Reading

In Reading the difficult part is rarely the driving. It is the two hundred yards around Forbury Gardens, where the permit bays begin, the loading bay is timed and a stopped car blocks the lane behind it.

From the moment the car leaves Reading, the arrival time is ours to manage. If the arrival at Farnborough moves you hear about it once, with a number attached, rather than in a series of updates sent to you in Reading.

  • Gated entrances and courtyards in Reading checked in advance

Reading and Reading West are the usual meeting points for anyone reaching Reading by rail. Which of them we use depends on your service and on where a car can actually stand in Reading.

Where a car into Reading and a train are on the same itinerary, one written quotation covers both from our side. You are not assembling a Reading journey out of separate arrangements that each assume the others went well.

Getting into Reading, and getting a price for it

Holding a car in Reading

LF-06Holding a car in Reading

Holding a car in Reading

A full day out of Reading usually runs from a breakfast meeting to an evening flight, with three or four stops in between and at least one of them moved at short notice.

Most hourly bookings in Reading start as something smaller. A transfer becomes a transfer plus a wait, then plus a second Reading address, and at that point holding the car is simpler and usually cheaper.

Four things we need, and a Reading price back

LF-07Four things we need, and a Reading price back

Four things we need, and a Reading price back

A Reading quotation is not a negotiation. The same journey is quoted the same way whoever is asking, and the written figure for your own run out of Reading to Farnborough settles it.

If the plan changes while the car is moving through Reading, the chauffeur drives where you ask and the price is revisited in writing afterwards. Nothing is added at the roadside in Reading.

17Answers

Reading chauffeur questions

If your Reading question is not here, the Farnborough pages and the pricing page usually have it.

Which station entrance should I meet the car at in Reading?

The north side, off Vastern Road, has a proper set-down and is easier to reach from the IDR. The south forecourt fills with taxis and buses at peak. Your chauffeur tells you which door to come out of before you arrive rather than after.

How long is the drive from Reading to Heathrow?

About twenty-six miles on the M4, so thirty-five minutes on a clear run and over an hour when Junction 4b and the M25 are busy. Terminal 5 is the closest gate from this direction. We set the collection against the slower figure and use the spare time if the road is clear.

Do you cover Caversham, Earley and Tilehurst?

Yes, along with Woodley, Shinfield and Purley on Thames. RG1 through RG31 are all standard ground. Caversham is the one worth flagging when you book, because the two bridges over the Thames are the only ways in and both queue in the afternoon.

Can you provide a car for a full day of meetings around the Thames Valley?

That is one of the commonest bookings here. A day rate covers the car and chauffeur for a set number of hours, and the route between Reading, Bracknell, Slough and Maidenhead is worked out in advance so nobody is hunting for parking between appointments.
