Chauffeur service in Port Talbot and Aberavon

Few British towns have a motorway on stilts through the middle of them. Port Talbot does, and it means the M4 is never more than a minute or two away from wherever you are standing.

Chauffeur service in Port Talbot — summary

Trains do the middle of a lot of Port Talbot journeys and a car does the ends. We collect at Baglan and Briton Ferry on the side of the station where a car can legally stand, watch the service the way we watch a flight, and carry the bags from the barrier. The same standard applies to Cardiff, an indicative 45-70 minutes from Port Talbot over roughly 35 miles, where the chauffeur meets you inside the hall. Hourly hire, airport transfers and long-distance driving are all booked from Port Talbot on the same terms. Nothing on this page carries a figure; the written quotation confirms what your own Port Talbot journey costs.

01Port Talbot, up front

Chauffeur service in Port Talbot

The viaduct carrying the M4 over the town centre is the defining piece of infrastructure here, and it is genuinely useful. Junctions 38, 40 and 41 put you on the motorway almost immediately, so an airport run from Port Talbot starts moving faster than one from a town with a long approach road. Cardiff is thirty-five miles, Bristol seventy-five.

Below the viaduct the town is compact, with the station on one side and Aberavon beach a mile away on the other. The steelworks site dominates the shoreline and shapes the local roads around it. Most of our collections here are residential or at the seafront hotels, and both are straightforward once you know which side of the motorway you want.

03The area

Baglan Bay and the streets that reach it

Wide stretches, tight turnings, and everything Port Talbot has in between.

Compressed is the word. The town sits on a narrow shelf between the hills and the sea, with the motorway, the railway and the main road all running through the same gap. The centre is small and easily walked, with limited parking and a one-way section. Aberavon has a long promenade with a wide road behind it, which is one of the easier places in south Wales for a car to stand. Behind the town the Afan valley climbs into forest with a single road up it.

04Demand

What gets asked for around Baglan Bay

Demand across Neath Port Talbot is not evenly spread. This is where it clusters in Port Talbot.

Industrial and contracting work forms a large part of the pattern, with visiting engineers and managers flying into Cardiff or Bristol and needing moving. The seafront hotels bring conference and leisure business. There is also mountain biking in the Afan Forest, which produces its own group bookings, and a steady stream of long-distance private journeys eastward because the M4 is right there.

05Road time

Timing the run to Cardiff

Road time in Port Talbot, stated plainly rather than optimistically.

The motorway junctions are the pressure points rather than the town. Junction 41 has restricted movements and the local roads take the overflow, so the approach from the east is worth thinking about. Shift changes at the works site put a lot of vehicles onto the same roads at once, morning and evening. Summer weekends fill the seafront car parks by late morning, and the Afan valley road is busy with bikes and vehicles carrying them on a Saturday.

06The kerb

Access and loading in the SA12 district

What the chauffeur does in the ten minutes before you come out of Afan Forest Park.

Port Talbot Parkway has a modern forecourt with a set-down and a short-stay area, which makes it one of the better stations in the region for a collection. Aberavon seafront has proper parking along the promenade and space for a car to wait, in season and out. The town centre streets are short-stay and tight. In the Afan valley the trailheads have car parks that work well as meeting points, and the lanes above them do not.

Collection notes for Port Talbot

  • 01Port Talbot Parkway has a proper set-down and short-stay area, which makes it a rare station where a car can genuinely wait.
  • 02Aberavon promenade has room to stand outside the summer peak, and marked parking behind it when the front is busy.
  • 03Junction 41 has restricted movements, so we plan the motorway approach from the east before setting out.
  • 04Afan valley collections are made at a named trailhead car park rather than on the forest lanes above.
  • 05Works shift changes put heavy traffic on the local roads twice a day; we shift a departure by fifteen minutes to miss them.

07Included as standard

Six things every Port Talbot booking carries

  • 01

    Trolley to boot at Cardiff

Landing at Cardiff ends with a person, not a text message from a Port Talbot number. The chauffeur is inside the hall before the belt starts, takes the cases, and walks you out to the car for the run back into Port Talbot.

  • 02

    Diversions away from Cardiff

Inbound flights are monitored to Cardiff and, where the first leg is rail, to Baglan. You do not have to message us from the aisle to say the flight into Cardiff is running late on us in Port Talbot.

  • 03

Familiar with the streets by Baglan Bay

Someone who has driven A4107, A4241 and A483 in the rain at rush hour, rather than an app deciding a stranger is four minutes away. The chauffeur is briefed on your journey before the car leaves for Port Talbot.

  • 04

One message, then a Port Talbot quotation

One price, in writing, before the car is allocated to your Port Talbot collection. If the journey from Port Talbot to Cardiff changes we requote in writing rather than adjusting an invoice afterwards.

  • 05

Boot space quoted honestly for Port Talbot

We ask about luggage because it decides which car reaches Port Talbot. Two cabin bags to Cardiff is a different booking from a family relocating with eight cases, and both are ordinary work in Port Talbot.

  • 06

Twenty minutes at Neath Port Talbot Hospital

An hourly booking holds the car for the whole period, so the boot becomes somewhere to leave a coat and a bag while you walk into Afan Lodge carrying nothing.

08Terminals

Cardiff, Bristol and the rest

These are drives we make regularly from Port Talbot, timed door to terminal rather than motorway junction to motorway junction. Add the walk from your Port Talbot door to the car and the queue at the Cardiff drop-off, then work backwards from the check-in desk. We do that sum for you on the written Port Talbot quotation.

Two fixed points in Port Talbot is a transfer. Four is an hourly Port Talbot booking. Somewhere between them the sums change, and in Port Talbot the crossover usually arrives at about the third stop.

Where the day crosses into Neath or beyond, that is simply mileage on the same booking. There is no boundary at the edge of Port Talbot past which a different arrangement begins.

We plan the collection backwards from A48, not forwards from the postcode. A48 decides which direction the car should be facing when you get in, and turning a long saloon round in Port Talbot afterwards wastes five minutes nobody has.

Everything after the Port Talbot door closes is designed to be uneventful. The chauffeur takes A48 if it is moving and the back way past Aberavon Beach if it is not, and either way the arrival time you were given is the one we are driving to.

The alternative to being met is a phone call from a Cardiff car park, a walk with a trolley, a lift you cannot find, and Port Talbot still an hour away. We do the other thing: a person inside the terminal holding a board, who then carries the bags to the car and drives you to Port Talbot.

Bags come out of the boot and go to the door rather than onto the A48 pavement. At one in the morning in Port Talbot that matters considerably more than it sounds like it should.

  • Cardiff car park found and paid for before the Port Talbot chauffeur walks in
  • Indicative 45-70 minutes back into Port Talbot
  • Waiting from touchdown at Cardiff built into the Port Talbot transfer
  • Bags taken from the Cardiff trolley to the boot and on to Port Talbot

Trains, stations and the last mile into Port Talbot

Trains solve distance and create a last mile into Port Talbot. Arriving at Baglan with luggage at seven in the evening is precisely the problem a chauffeur is for, and the car is on the rank side before the train stops.

We use Baglan, Briton Ferry and Pyle regularly and know which of them tolerate a stationary car and which do not. Where the answer is a short-stay bay at Baglan, the parking is paid before you arrive.

Long-haul out of Cardiff means an earlier desk, more luggage and a longer walk, all of it paid for at the Port Talbot end. All three change the collection time in Port Talbot, and all three appear on the quotation rather than being assumed.

If there is a group leaving Port Talbot together, two cars leaving at the same minute is usually calmer than one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. We will say which we think is right when we quote the Port Talbot collection.

The SUV classes exist for weather, gravel and drives a good deal longer than the 35 miles out of Port Talbot. Around Port Talbot that is a smaller share of the work than the brochures imply, and we will say so rather than steering you into one.

Send the date, the pick-up address in Port Talbot, where you are going and how many people and cases are travelling. That is enough for a written Port Talbot quotation. A flight number or a tail number helps, and so does the airline, because it decides which Cardiff terminal the car leaves Port Talbot for.

Return legs into Port Talbot are worth booking at the same time. The same chauffeur meets the flight at Cardiff and drives back into Port Talbot, both halves agreed at once and neither arranged in a hurry.

17Answers

Port Talbot chauffeur questions

What a first-time Port Talbot booking usually wants to check.

How quickly can a car reach the M4 from central Port Talbot?

Within two or three minutes from most addresses, which is unusual. The motorway crosses the town on a viaduct with junctions at either end, so there is no long approach road to negotiate first. In practical terms a collection here starts making progress towards Cardiff or Bristol almost immediately, and that shows up in the total journey time.

Can you collect groups for mountain biking in the Afan valley?

Yes, and we do it with a people carrier rather than a saloon where there is kit involved. Bikes themselves need arranging in advance because they will not go in a car boot. We meet at the named trailhead car parks rather than on the forest roads above them, which are unsurfaced in places and awkward for a low vehicle.

Is Aberavon seafront a workable meeting point?

One of the better ones on this coast. There is a wide road behind the promenade with marked parking, so a car can stand without obstructing anything, and the hotels along the front have their own approaches. On a hot summer Sunday it fills like anywhere else, and then we use a named car park entrance instead of the front itself.

What is the timing from Port Talbot to Cardiff Airport?

Thirty-five miles and typically forty-five minutes to an hour and ten, taking the M4 east and coming off for the A4226 down to Rhoose. The junction 33 to Culverhouse Cross stretch is where the variation happens in the morning peak. Outside that window it is a straightforward run and one of the more predictable airport journeys we do in this part of Wales.
