Chauffeur service in Poole — summary

Two kinds of booking come out of Poole. The first is a flight: a car to Southampton on an indicative 50-80 minutes, roughly 40 miles, timed backwards from when check-in closes rather than forwards from a Poole postcode. The second is a day with too many fixed points to book as separate journeys, where the chauffeur holds the car near Lighthouse Poole and moves when you do. Both are quoted per vehicle, in writing, before a car is allocated to Poole. Coverage runs on to Bournemouth and Christchurch, and Southampton, Bristol, Heathrow and Gatwick are all driven from here. No standing price list is published, and nothing on a Poole booking is metered.

Chauffeur service in Poole

Poole's geography is all water. The harbour wraps round the town, the quay is the old working heart of it, and Sandbanks runs out on a spit to a chain ferry that crosses to Studland. That ferry is the local variable: it runs on demand, it queues in summer, and occasionally it does not run at all.

The other fixed point is the ferry terminal. Sailings to Cherbourg and the Channel Islands have check-in times that do not move, so we work backwards from check-in rather than from departure. Southampton Airport is an hour east and Heathrow around two, which makes this a manageable base for flying.

03The area

Where Poole is wide, and where it is not

From A3049 inwards, this is what the car is dealing with.

The old town around the quay is Georgian and tight, with narrow streets and a level crossing on the High Street right by the station that stops traffic several times an hour. Beyond it the town spreads into Parkstone, Branksome and Canford Cliffs. Sandbanks is a single road out and back with no through route, which concentrates every vehicle onto the same tarmac.

04Demand

A normal week in Poole

What Poole books when the itinerary already has a flight in the middle of it.

Ferry transfers are a steady thread, along with marine business from the boatyards and the yacht industry. Sandbanks and Canford Cliffs generate private airport work, much of it long-haul. The hospital and the arts centre bring their own traffic. And in summer the harbour and beaches fill the roads with visitors from mid-morning onwards.

05Road time

What the traffic does in Poole, and when

The timing we would use if the booking out of Poole were our own.

The High Street level crossing near the station interrupts traffic regularly and is worth a few minutes in any timing. The Sandbanks road queues badly on warm days, particularly near the ferry slip. For the ferry terminal we work to check-in. For Southampton Airport allow an hour; for Heathrow, two hours off-peak and up to three in the morning.

06The kerb

The kerb in Poole, and what it allows

Kerb space in Poole is finite. Here is how a collection on A3049 works with that.

The quay has pay and display bays that fill early and are enforced. Poole station has a set-down and a car park, with the level crossing immediately alongside. The ferry terminal has its own approach and drop-off arrangements. On Sandbanks the road is narrow with double yellows along much of it, so we come to the drive rather than wait on the carriageway.

Collection notes for Poole

  • 01The level crossing on the High Street by the station stops traffic several times an hour; we allow for it.
  • 02Ferry check-in times are fixed, so we work backwards from check-in rather than from the sailing.
  • 03Sandbanks is one road out and back with double yellows along much of it, so we come to the drive itself.
  • 04The chain ferry queues on warm days and is occasionally out of service, so we never rely on it for a timed journey.

07Included as standard

Not extras: what a Poole car comes with

  • 01

The driver, not just a car, in Poole

Every chauffeur sent to Poole is licensed for private hire and drives one of our vehicles rather than their own. What is more useful to you is that they know where a long car can turn round near Canford Cliffs.

  • 02

    Four cases out of Poole

The chauffeur lifts and loads at the Poole kerb. In the rain on A3049 with a laptop bag under one arm, that is worth more than most of the things chauffeur companies get compared on.

  • 03

Tracked from the tail number into Southampton

On the way out of Poole the checking runs the other way. We confirm the Southampton terminal against your flight number the day before the car leaves Poole, because airlines move between buildings and a satnav is the last thing to find out.

  • 04

The welcome on the Southampton concourse

The board goes up before the first passengers come through the Southampton doors, and stays up until you are in front of it and pointed at Poole. Then the bags are taken and the drive into Poole begins, which is the whole of the arrangement.

  • 05

Where the car waits near Brownsea Island

Where the day has no fixed shape, book the car from the first address in Poole and release it when you have finished. Everything between that and Brownsea Island can be decided as it happens.

  • 06

    The written quotation for Poole

Prices are per vehicle rather than per passenger, so a Poole collection with four people in it costs what the same car would cost with one. Luggage changes the class of car sent to Poole, not the arithmetic.

Return legs into Poole matter as much as outbound ones. Coming back into Poole from Southampton at six in the evening is not the same journey as the reverse at six in the morning, and one table cannot show both. Departures from Poole, and what time to be ready

A pre-dawn departure out of Poole is easier to plan than a nine o'clock one. A3049 is empty, the drive sits close to its lower bound, and the only variable left is how long you take to reach the car.

Business travellers leaving Poole usually want the car to move the moment the door shuts. Families usually want two minutes on the Poole pavement first. The chauffeur takes that cue from you rather than from a Poole timetable.

Suite and Signature classes are for arrivals that are themselves part of the event: a wedding at Poole Hospital, a milestone dinner, a photograph that outlives the day. For a five o'clock run out of Poole to Southampton they are unnecessary.

Whatever class arrives, the welcome is identical: the same loading at the Poole kerb, the same meet inside Southampton, the same chauffeur holding the door at both ends.

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Poole and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere A3049 will tolerate. In Poole the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

The handover in Poole takes about forty seconds and then the car is gone. Where the run continues from Poole to Southampton, the chauffeur will tell you the indicative arrival once and then leave you alone with it.

  • Pick-ups at Branksome made on the side that tolerates a stationary car
  • Collections from Poole Hospital arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
  • The car holds on B3369 when the kerb outside your door will not take it

We ask for the flight number rather than the landing time into Southampton, because only one of those tells us when to leave Poole. From it we know the aircraft, the terminal, when to leave Poole, and when to start the walk in from the car park.

From the barrier it is a short walk to the car and then an indicative 50-80 minutes back to Poole, usually by A3049. The boot takes the cases, the cabin is warm, and nobody asks you a question between Southampton and Poole.

A collection at Branksome has a small choreography to it: the right entrance, the right side of the barrier, and a chauffeur standing on the concourse rather than sending a map pin and hoping.

The chauffeur walks onto the concourse at Branksome rather than waiting in the car, particularly where the platform is a long way from the road. That is the part most people book a Branksome collection for.

Visiting Poole for a day from elsewhere is the classic case: train into Branksome, car waiting on the right side of the station, four hours of moving about, then back to the platform with a margin.

Waiting near Brownsea Island is not idle time from our side. The chauffeur is watching the clock, the traffic on A3049 and your next address, so the car is moving before you have finished asking for it.

We would rather have too much detail about the Poole collection than too little. If the collection in Poole is awkward — a gated entrance, a narrow turning off A3049, a building with two doors — say so, and the chauffeur is briefed before the day.

If the journey is unusual — a very early start from Poole, a run to somewhere with no obvious address, an overnight wait — say so at the enquiry stage. Those are all ordinary Poole work, and all easier to price honestly in advance.

17Answers

Poole chauffeur questions

Answered for Poole rather than for chauffeur hire in general.

Should I rely on the Sandbanks chain ferry?

Not for anything timed. It is a short crossing to Studland that saves a long drive round the harbour, but it queues badly in summer and it goes out of service for maintenance and in bad weather. For a flight or a sailing we take the road round through Wareham and treat the ferry as a bonus rather than a plan.

Do you do transfers to the Poole ferry terminal?

Regularly, for the Channel Islands and Cherbourg sailings. Check-in closes well before departure and the approach fills before a sailing, so we work backwards from the check-in deadline. For arrivals we track the vessel and meet foot passengers where they come out rather than sitting in a car park guessing.

How does the level crossing affect journeys in Poole?

The line crosses the High Street right beside the station, so the barriers come down several times an hour and hold traffic in the middle of town. It is a couple of minutes each time rather than a disaster, but on a tight schedule it is exactly the sort of thing worth building in rather than discovering.

Can you collect from Sandbanks and Canford Cliffs?

Yes, and it is a good share of our private work here. The Sandbanks road is narrow with restrictions along most of it, so a car waiting on the carriageway causes real trouble. We come onto the drive where there is one, and where there is not we arrive as you come out rather than sit outside.
