Chauffeur service in Perth — summary

Chauffeur hire in Perth, Scotland, for people whose journey already has a premium cabin in the middle of it and who have noticed that the ground half is the part that goes wrong. The car takes you from your Perth door to the terminal at Edinburgh, an indicative 55-85 minutes and about 45 miles, and it is standing in arrivals when you come back. Between flights it works by the hour around Perth Bridge, St John’s Kirk and Branklyn Garden. Pick-ups are made from private addresses in the PH1 district, from Perth Royal Infirmary, and from the rank side of Perth. Nothing is published as a price list; the figure is confirmed on a written quotation for Perth.

01Perth at a glance

Chauffeur service in Perth

Perth is a compact city on the Tay with a national road junction attached. From Broxden the M90 runs south to Edinburgh, the A9 north to Inverness and south-west to Stirling, and the A85 west to Crieff. That position gives it airport access far better than its size implies, with Edinburgh under an hour and Glasgow a little over.

The city itself is Georgian in layout, laid out between two large open inches beside the river, with a grid of streets that is easy to navigate and heavily restricted for parking. The bridges over the Tay are the local constraint, and the A9 north of here is the road that everybody underestimates.

03The area

Where Perth is wide, and where it is not

The parts of Perth that decide a pick-up, listed without flattery.

Orderly and small. The centre is a grid between the North and South Inch, with pedestrianised sections on the main shopping streets and residents’ bays on most of the rest. The bridges across the Tay funnel traffic and back up at the peaks. Out at Broxden the roads are modern and fast, and the A9 north climbs quickly into open country where the average-speed cameras begin and the pace settles.

04Demand

The reasons a car leaves Perth

The pattern of a normal week in Perth.

Gleneagles is twenty minutes away and generates a steady stream of arrivals from Edinburgh and Glasgow, particularly around golf and events. The city has a substantial insurance and financial employer base of its own. Whisky and country pursuits bring visitors to Perthshire generally, and the hospital at the edge of the city serves a wide rural area. There is also a good deal of onward travel to Highland Perthshire, which is slower than people expect.

05Road time

Perth to Edinburgh, by the clock

Counting backwards from check-in at Edinburgh to a door in Perth.

The bridges over the Tay are congested from half eight and again from half four. Broxden itself flows well but its approaches queue in the peak. Northbound on the A9 the average-speed cameras mean the traffic moves at a steady rather than a variable pace, so estimates are actually more reliable there than on many roads. Big events at Gleneagles and Scone put concentrated traffic on the A9 and A93 for a few hours.

06The kerb

Where a long car can stand near Huntingtower Castle

Permit bays, loading bays and the Perth kerb.

Perth station has a forecourt with set-down and a rank. The city centre streets are largely pedestrian or residents’ parking, so a waiting car uses one of the multi-storeys. Gleneagles has a long private drive with a proper covered entrance, which is one of the easier arrivals in Scotland. Scone Palace has its own approach and event parking. Riverside addresses near the inches have limited on-street space and are best served from a nearby through road.

Collection notes for Perth

  • 01Gleneagles has a private drive and a covered entrance, so arrivals and departures happen at the door rather than a car park.
  • 02The Tay bridges queue in both peaks, and a collection on the far side needs a few minutes more than the map suggests.
  • 03City centre streets are pedestrian or residents’ bays, so a waiting car uses one of the multi-storey car parks.
  • 04North of Perth the A9 runs under average-speed cameras, which makes the timing predictable and the pace steady.
  • 05Perth station has a set-down beside the rank, which works well outside the commuter peaks.

The same chauffeur, Perth to Edinburgh

Every chauffeur working Perth is licensed for private hire and drives one of our own vehicles. Beyond that, what matters here is that they know Perth: the turnings, the loading bays and the two minutes it takes to walk from Scone Palace.

  • 02

Loaded before you leave Perth Royal Infirmary

The first question on any Perth booking is how many cases, because that decides the vehicle. Everything else about a Perth journey is easier to change afterwards than the size of the boot.

  • 03

    Late landings at Edinburgh, absorbed

A delay at Edinburgh is our problem to solve. We move the chauffeur's start time in Perth, hold the car, and the price on your written quotation does not move because the airline's did.

  • 04

    Inside the hall at Edinburgh

We watch the flight from the tail number, so the chauffeur is standing in Edinburgh arrivals when you clear customs rather than circling on the way in from Perth. Waiting time from touchdown is built into the Perth transfer.

  • 05

Stops added to the Perth quotation

Stops along A85 are built into the quotation. A pharmacy, a school gate in Perth or twenty minutes at Perth Royal Infirmary all go into the plan before the car sets off.

  • 06

Priced before the car sets off for Perth

Tell us the shape of a job around Huntingtower Castle and the figure comes back before you commit to anything. The written quotation for a Perth booking confirms the final figure and what sits inside it.

Either side of the flight from Edinburgh

Out of Perth before A85 fills

LF-01Out of Perth before A85 fills

Out of Perth before A85 fills

Most missed flights out of Edinburgh are lost somewhere in the PH1 district rather than in the air. Out of Perth the ground problem is A85 between about seven and half past nine, and the answer is leaving before it rather than driving harder through it.

Return legs into Perth get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Edinburgh and drives you back to the same door in Perth.

Suite and Signature classes are for arrivals that are themselves part of the event: a wedding at Perth Royal Infirmary, a milestone dinner, a photograph that outlives the day. For a five o'clock run out of Perth to Edinburgh they are unnecessary.

The classes below are the ones sent to Perth, and each is quoted on the journey rather than read off a table. The written quotation for a Perth booking names the vehicle and the price together.

Your confirmation carries the chauffeur's name, the vehicle and the registration before the day of the Perth collection. On the morning itself you get one more message: where the car is standing in Perth, described in words rather than dropped as a map pin.

Leaving Perth carries most of the variables. Once the car is past A85 the rest of the run is arithmetic, and the arithmetic was done before your collection time was set.

  • Route out of Perth chosen for the hour rather than for the map
  • Gated entrances and courtyards in Perth checked in advance
  • A second collection in Dundee priced into the same booking
  • Engine off and boot open before you reach the car in Perth

Forty minutes before you touch down at Edinburgh the car has left Perth and is already off the road. What happens after that is a walk across Edinburgh, a wait, a name board and an indicative 55-85 minutes to Perth, none of it visible from your seat.

A Perth return booked at the same time as the outbound leg is the simplest version of this. Same chauffeur, same car, same door in Perth, and one written price covering both halves of the trip.

  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Perth
  • The same chauffeur who drove you out of Perth
  • Board held at Edinburgh until you are standing in front of it, Perth bound
  • Groups gathered at one point inside Edinburgh, one chauffeur per car into Perth
Rail into Perth, car for the rest

Rail into Perth, car for the rest

Plenty of journeys into Perth are best done by rail for the long middle and by car for the ends. We collect from Perth and Gleneagles, on the side of the station where a car can actually stop rather than the entrance the signs point at.

If the train into Perth is cancelled entirely, the car can meet you wherever you end up instead. That flexibility is easier to arrange in advance than at the moment it is needed, so mention it when you book the Perth leg.

Between appointments the chauffeur finds somewhere legal to sit in Perth and stays reachable. In Perth that is sometimes directly outside and sometimes a street away on A93, and either way you are told which.

The same chauffeur stays with you across Perth all day. By the third stop they know where you like to be dropped and which entrance at Gleneagles is quickest, which is the quiet advantage of not being reassigned every journey.

Quoting a journey out of Perth

LF-07Quoting a journey out of Perth

Quoting a journey out of Perth

We would rather have too much detail about the Perth collection than too little. If the collection in Perth is awkward — a gated entrance, a narrow turning off A85, a building with two doors — say so, and the chauffeur is briefed before the day.

Very early and very late Perth bookings go through the same process with more margin built in. A car leaving Perth before dawn is confirmed in writing exactly like one leaving at noon.

17Answers

Perth chauffeur questions

Timing, kerbs and price, as they apply in Perth.

How far is Gleneagles from Perth by road?

About sixteen miles and typically twenty to thirty minutes on the A9, coming off at Auchterarder. The hotel has a long private drive and a covered entrance, so arrivals happen at the door regardless of the weather. It is a common run for us from both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports too, at around an hour to an hour and a quarter from either.

What is the quickest way from Perth to Edinburgh Airport?

The M90 south over the Queensferry Crossing and off at the airport junction, about forty-five miles and usually under an hour and a half. It is a motorway for almost the whole distance, which makes it one of the more dependable airport runs in Scotland. The approach through the airport junction is the only part that regularly slows.

Do you drive into Highland Perthshire from Perth?

Regularly, to Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and Blair Atholl. Pitlochry is around half an hour up the A9; Aberfeldy is a similar time on smaller roads. The distances look modest and the roads are not fast, particularly west of the A9 where they narrow through the glens. We quote in time rather than in miles for anything beyond Dunkeld.

Is Perth Racecourse straightforward for a race day collection?

It is one of the easier venues, sitting in the Scone Palace grounds with its own access and generous parking. The constraint is timing rather than geography: everyone leaves within twenty minutes of the last race and the exit road takes a while to clear. We position the car in advance and agree a meeting point that is not the main gate.
