Chauffeur service in Oban, the gateway to the isles

Oban exists to put people on boats. Every journey here is timed against a sailing, and the road in is long enough that the margin has to be real.

Chauffeur service in Oban — summary

Oban sits next to Fort William, Glasgow and Stirling, and bookings frequently pick up in two of them on the same run. Chauffeur service in Oban covers airport transfers, station collections, hourly hire and long-distance work, with the drive to Glasgow taking an indicative 2 hours 15 minutes-2 hours 55 minutes over about 95 miles. The chauffeur finds the legal stopping point near Oban Distillery before the booked time, sends one message naming it, and waits. Flights into Glasgow are tracked from the tail number, so a delay moves our clock rather than your Oban booking. Vehicles run from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, all quoted per journey rather than per passenger, and the Oban quotation confirms the figure.

Chauffeur service in Oban

The ferry terminal is the centre of gravity. Sailings run to Mull, Colonsay, Barra, South Uist and Lismore, and the check-in deadlines are firm, so we work backwards from those rather than from the departure time. The town wraps around the bay in a horseshoe with McCaig’s Tower on the hill above it.

Getting here is the part people underestimate. Glasgow is about ninety-five miles by the A82 along Loch Lomond and then the A85 through Glen Lochy, and that is comfortably two and a quarter hours in good conditions. In summer, behind coaches and campervans, it can be considerably more.

03The area

A82, and everything that hangs off it

Where the streets are wide, where they are not, and what that means for a car in Oban.

A small town on a steep bay with almost no flat ground to spare. The seafront from the ferry terminal round to the north pier is the main road, and in summer it is busy with pedestrians, coaches and cars looking for spaces that do not exist. The streets climbing behind are narrow and residential. Out of town the A85 runs east through Connel and the A816 south towards Lochgilphead, both single carriageway and slow.

04Demand

Who takes a car from the PA34 district

The three or four bookings that make up most of a Oban month.

Island travel dominates: passengers heading for Mull, Iona, Colonsay and the Outer Hebrides who need the road leg from Glasgow or Edinburgh. The distillery and the seafood trade bring visitors. Hotels around the bay and out along the coast generate arrivals and departures. And there is a steady flow of long-distance private work, because from Oban every airport is a serious drive and nobody enjoys doing it twice in a day.

05Road time

Leaving Oban at the right hour

Leaving Oban at four in the morning is a different journey from leaving at eight.

Sailing times govern everything locally, with the roads around the terminal busiest in the hour before a departure and briefly after an arrival. On the routes in, the A82 along Loch Lomond is the constraint: it is narrow, twisting and heavily used in season, and a single slow vehicle holds a queue for miles. Winter brings closures on the higher sections and the Rest and Be Thankful on the A83 has its own history of landslips.

06The kerb

Standing, waiting and the pick-up point in Oban

Getting from the door of Oban Distillery into the car without a phone call.

The ferry terminal has a foot passenger set-down separate from the vehicle marshalling lanes, and that is where collections work. Seafront parking is limited and heavily used from May onwards, so a waiting car uses one of the town car parks. Oban station sits beside the terminal, which makes rail and ferry connections straightforward. Hotels around the bay mostly have their own parking, though the approaches are narrow.

Collection notes for Oban

  • 01Ferry collections use the foot passenger set-down rather than the vehicle marshalling lanes at the terminal.
  • 02We time departures against the sailing check-in deadline and add a margin for the A82 along Loch Lomond.
  • 03Oban station sits beside the ferry terminal, which makes a rail and boat connection unusually simple.
  • 04Seafront parking is scarce from May onwards, so a waiting car uses a town car park and comes forward on your call.
  • 05The A85 and A82 are single carriageway throughout and slow behind coaches in summer; the mileage understates the time.

  • 01

A delay at Glasgow is our problem

The tail number is watched from departure, so a diversion or a two-hour hold changes when we leave Oban for Glasgow and not what you booked. The same applies to a train into Connel Ferry when rail is doing the middle of the journey.

  • 02

    The Oban to Glasgow figure

The quotation states the price, the vehicle class, the waiting allowance at Glasgow, and any applicable tax on the Oban journey. There is no multiplier for a Friday out of Oban and no surcharge that turns up afterwards.

  • 03

    Landing back into Oban

After a long flight the last thing worth doing is negotiating the Glasgow short-stay barrier with Oban still ahead of you. The chauffeur handles the Glasgow end of it and you are pointed at A82 within a few minutes of clearing customs.

  • 04

Changing the plan halfway across Oban

If the plan changes halfway across Oban the chauffeur simply drives where you ask, and we requote in writing afterwards. Nothing is added to the Oban price without you seeing it first.

  • 05

A chauffeur for Oban, not a rideshare

Chauffeurs working Oban know where a car can legally stand near Oban Distillery, which entrance at Oban Distillery is used for loading, and how long the lights on A82 actually take.

  • 06

Cases to the trolley at Glasgow

Boot space is quoted honestly against the number of passengers leaving Oban. A full E-Class boot with three adults aboard is not the same as an empty one leaving Oban for Glasgow, and the written quotation reflects that.

The mechanics of a Oban transfer

From your door in Oban to the car

LF-01From your door in Oban to the car

From your door in Oban to the car

The chauffeur reaches Oban with time in hand and parks. Nothing about the first ten minutes should involve you: no circling, no hazard lights outside Oban Distillery, no phone call asking which end of the street you are on.

Cases go in the boot while you are still saying goodbye on the Oban doorstep. If the journey is to Glasgow the route is already loaded, the traffic on A816 has been checked once more, and the car is moving within a minute of the door closing. That minute is the entire difference between a Oban chauffeur and a cab.

  • The car holds on A816 when the kerb outside your door will not take it
  • Cases carried from the door in Oban rather than watched
  • Chauffeur briefed on the Oban address before the car sets off
  • Water, a charger and a cabin set for whatever Oban is doing that morning

Days that begin in Oban and end at Glasgow are common enough to count as a category. The car does the Oban meetings, then does the airport run, and it stays one booking with one figure.

Where the day crosses into Fort William or beyond, that is simply mileage on the same booking. There is no boundary at the edge of Oban past which a different arrangement begins.

Working backwards from check-in at Glasgow

LF-03Working backwards from check-in at Glasgow

Working backwards from check-in at Glasgow

The arithmetic is simple and people still get it wrong: 2 hours 15 minutes-2 hours 55 minutes of road, plus the walk from the drop-off, plus the queue at the desk, plus whatever A82 adds on the day. We do that sum before quoting a Oban collection.

If there is a group leaving Oban together, two cars leaving at the same minute is usually calmer than one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. We will say which we think is right when we quote the Oban collection.

11Longer bookings

The car, the day and the hours in between, in Oban

Met, not telephoned, at Glasgow

LF-04Met, not telephoned, at Glasgow

Met, not telephoned, at Glasgow

The alternative to being met is a phone call from a Glasgow car park, a walk with a trolley, a lift you cannot find, and Oban still an hour away. We do the other thing: a person inside the terminal holding a board, who then carries the bags to the car and drives you to Oban.

If the onward journey is by rail, the car runs to Connel Ferry instead of home, with the cases carried to the barrier and enough margin left for the train you actually intend to take.

  • Trains into Connel Ferry watched the same way as flights
  • Private arrivals met airside at the Glasgow handling agent, then driven to Oban
  • No telephone call from an Glasgow car park before the run to Oban
  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Oban
What we would send to Oban

LF-05What we would send to Oban

What we would send to Oban

Ask about luggage out of Oban before comfort. Two people and two cases out of Oban is a saloon question; four people and four cases is not, and that is the one mistake which cannot be fixed at the kerb.

Every car sent to Oban is a private hire vehicle driven by a licensed chauffeur. Nothing on this page claims how many there are or how old they are, because availability for a Oban date is confirmed on the quotation and not on a web page.

Trains, stations and the last mile into Oban

LF-06Trains, stations and the last mile into Oban

Trains, stations and the last mile into Oban

A station collection in Oban is a small piece of choreography: the right entrance, the right side of the barrier, and a chauffeur who is standing on the concourse rather than sending a location pin.

Short connections at Connel Ferry are worth flagging. If you have twenty minutes between arriving at Connel Ferry and being somewhere in Oban, we will say honestly whether A82 makes that realistic.

Four things make a quotation possible: the date, the address in Oban, where you are going and how many of you there are. Everything after that about the Oban journey is refinement rather than requirement.

Once the Oban booking is confirmed there is nothing left for you to arrange. The chauffeur has the Oban address, the route, the flight and the notes, and the next thing that happens is a car outside your door.

17Answers

Oban chauffeur questions

Four questions that come up on almost every Oban enquiry.

How much time should be allowed for the drive from Glasgow to Oban?

Two and a quarter to nearly three hours for around ninety-five miles. The A82 along Loch Lomond is narrow and twisting with limited overtaking, and in season it carries coaches and campervans that set the pace for everyone behind. For a ferry we would add a further half hour on top of whatever the sailing requires.

Can you meet foot passengers coming off the Mull ferry?

Yes, at the foot passenger set-down at the terminal rather than in the vehicle lanes. Disembarkation times vary with the sailing and the volume of traffic, so the chauffeur parks and waits rather than circling the seafront. Tell us the sailing and we will watch it, since CalMac timings move with the weather more than most schedules do.

Is the road from Oban to Fort William difficult?

Not difficult, but slow. It is around fifty miles on the A828 and A82 via the Connel Bridge and Ballachulish, and normally an hour and a quarter to an hour and three quarters. Single carriageway all the way with some genuinely beautiful stretches. In winter the higher sections towards Glencoe are the part to watch rather than the coast road.

What luggage can you take for an island trip?

More than a saloon boot holds, usually, which is why we ask. People travelling to the Hebrides tend to carry a fortnight of everything, and for a group we would send a people carrier rather than pretend it will fit. Tell us the number of cases when you book and we will match the vehicle to it rather than the other way round.
