Chauffeur service in Newmarket — summary

Trains do the middle of a lot of Newmarket journeys and a car does the ends. We collect at Kennett and Newmarket on the side of the station where a car can legally stand, watch the service the way we watch a flight, and carry the bags from the barrier. The same standard applies to Stansted, an indicative 40-60 minutes from Newmarket over roughly 30 miles, where the chauffeur meets you inside the hall. Hourly hire, airport transfers and long-distance driving are all booked from Newmarket on the same terms. Nothing on this page carries a figure; the written quotation confirms what your own Newmarket journey costs.

01Starting in Newmarket

Chauffeur service in Newmarket

Newmarket is a town built around horses, and the traffic arrangements follow. Horse crossings interrupt the Bury Road and the Moulton Road in the early morning, and a car stops for them, no argument. The gallops on Warren Hill and the Limekilns are working ground, not parkland, and the roads around them behave accordingly.

For a chauffeur the town has two rhythms. Ordinary days are quiet and easy, with Cambridge fifteen miles west and Stansted thirty miles south. Race days and sales weeks are entirely different, and if you have not planned the collection point in advance you will spend a long time in a field.

03The area

How Newmarket behaves around a car

What Newmarket does to a long wheelbase.

One long High Street, a clock tower, and two racecourses on the western edge. The town is compact and the parking is tight, but the surrounding roads are wide and fast because they were built for horseboxes. Tattersalls sits behind the High Street with its own access, and the studs to the north and east sit behind long walls on lanes that are quiet until a sale week fills them.

04Demand

Airport runs and long days out of Newmarket

Demand across Suffolk is not evenly spread. This is where it clusters in Newmarket.

Racing drives almost all of it. Owners and trainers travel constantly, buyers arrive from Ireland, France and the Gulf for the sales, and the Guineas Festival, the July Festival and the autumn meetings each fill the town. Outside racing there is stud business, veterinary specialists at the equine hospital, and the ordinary airport work of a well-off small town.

05Road time

Timing the run to Stansted

Traffic in Newmarket is predictable if you know the hour. This is the hour A1304 turns on.

Early mornings belong to the horses; expect to stop at the crossings between about half six and half nine. On race days the approaches to the Rowley Mile and the July Course fill from ninety minutes before the first, and the exit afterwards is single file for a good while. During Tattersalls sales weeks the High Street and the roads around the sale ring are busy all day.

06The kerb

Standing, waiting and the pick-up point in Newmarket

Why a Newmarket pick-up is described by kerb rather than by postcode.

Racecourse car parks are workable for a drop-off but slow to leave, so we usually arrange to collect from a point on the approach road once the crowd has thinned. The High Street has short-stay bays only. Studs and yards have their own gates and most prefer a call ahead. Newmarket station is small and a little out of the centre, with a short set-down.

Collection notes for Newmarket

  • 01Horses have priority at the road crossings in the morning; the car waits and we build the delay into the timing.
  • 02After racing we collect from a point on the approach road rather than the car park, which saves a long crawl.
  • 03Studs and training yards prefer a call ahead, and most have a specific gate for visiting cars.
  • 04During Tattersalls sales weeks the High Street is busy all day, not just at the usual peaks.

07Included as standard

The standard, from Newmarket to wherever you are going

  • 01

    A price that ignores A1304

The airport columns on the card are the published London reference fares rather than Newmarket ones. A run from Newmarket to Stansted is priced against its own 30 miles, and the quotation says as much.

  • 02

A delay at Stansted is our problem

The tail number is watched from departure, so a diversion or a two-hour hold changes when we leave Newmarket for Stansted and not what you booked. The same applies to a train into Kennett when rail is doing the middle of the journey.

  • 03

    Multi-stop journeys out of Newmarket

If the plan changes halfway across Newmarket the chauffeur simply drives where you ask, and we requote in writing afterwards. Nothing is added to the Newmarket price without you seeing it first.

  • 04

    Landing back into Newmarket

After a long flight the last thing worth doing is negotiating the Stansted short-stay barrier with Newmarket still ahead of you. The chauffeur handles the Stansted end of it and you are pointed at A1304 within a few minutes of clearing customs.

  • 05

Room for what you are taking out of Newmarket

Boot space is quoted honestly against the number of passengers leaving Newmarket. A full E-Class boot with three adults aboard is not the same as an empty one leaving Newmarket for Stansted, and the written quotation reflects that.

  • 06

    Briefed on your Newmarket collection

Nothing about the driving out of Newmarket should be memorable. Steady on A1304, no hurry, no phone, and an arrival at Stansted that matches the time you were given when you booked.

08Terminals

Distance out of Newmarket first, then time. From Newmarket it is roughly 30 miles to Stansted, and the indicative 40-60 minutes is what that mileage costs at an ordinary hour on A1304. Every other row in the Newmarket table follows the same rule.

Before the engine starts in Newmarket

Before the engine starts in Newmarket

Most of the work in a Newmarket collection happens before anyone appears. Where to stop in Newmarket, which way to face, how long the car can sit there, and what to do when a delivery van is already in the only space.

From the moment the car leaves Newmarket, the arrival time is ours to manage. If the arrival at Stansted moves you hear about it once, with a number attached, rather than in a series of updates sent to you in Newmarket.

  • Luggage loaded at the Newmarket kerb, doors held, no waiting on the pavement
  • The stopping point on A1304 agreed before the morning rather than during it
  • No meter and no waiting charge on a residential collection in Newmarket

Groups leaving Newmarket together are usually calmer in two cars than in one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. We will say which of those we think is right when the Newmarket journey is quoted.

Terminal choice at Stansted matters more than people leaving Newmarket expect. Tell us the airline when you book and the chauffeur takes the right spur off A1304, which at Stansted can be the difference between a two-minute walk and a fifteen-minute one with a trolley.

A full day out of Newmarket usually runs from a breakfast meeting to an evening flight, with three or four stops in between and at least one of them moved at short notice.

If the Newmarket day needs two cars we say so, rather than putting six people and their luggage into one and hoping. Two saloons moving across Newmarket is often the cheaper answer as well as the calmer one.

Where a booking is rail into Newmarket and road afterwards, both halves are planned together. The train number goes on the booking, the chauffeur watches it, and the car is on the right side of Kennett before it pulls in.

Where a car into Newmarket and a train are on the same itinerary, one written quotation covers both from our side. You are not assembling a Newmarket journey out of separate arrangements that each assume the others went well.

Stansted to your door in Newmarket

Where a group bound for Newmarket lands together, one gathering point inside Stansted works better than several. The chauffeurs stand together, the cases split sensibly, and the cars leave for Newmarket at the same minute.

For late arrivals the practical question is whether anyone in Newmarket is still awake at the other end. The chauffeur will carry the bags to the door in Newmarket rather than leaving them on the pavement, which at one in the morning matters more than it sounds.

  • Trains into Kennett watched the same way as flights
  • Private arrivals met airside at the Stansted handling agent, then driven to Newmarket
  • No telephone call from an Stansted car park before the run to Newmarket
  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Newmarket

Choosing the car for a Newmarket journey

LF-06Choosing the car for a Newmarket journey

Choosing the car for a Newmarket journey

Cabin class is the working default in Newmarket: two passengers, two cases, an early flight, and nothing about the car that asks to be noticed on the way out of the street.

Where the choice is genuinely close, tell us what the Newmarket day is for. A board meeting near The Clock Tower and a family holiday to Stansted pull in different directions, and rarely towards the same car.

If the journey out of Newmarket is unusual, say so. A pre-dawn start from Newmarket, an address with no obvious entrance, an overnight wait: all of it is ordinary work, and all of it is easier to price honestly in advance.

Return legs into Newmarket are worth booking at the same time. The same chauffeur meets the flight at Stansted and drives back into Newmarket, both halves agreed at once and neither arranged in a hurry.

17Answers

Newmarket chauffeur questions

What people want to know before a car is booked from Newmarket.

What are the horse crossings and do they affect my journey?

They are marked crossings where strings of racehorses walk from the yards to the gallops, mainly between about half past six and half past nine. Traffic stops for them, and a string can take a couple of minutes to pass. It is a genuine and pleasant part of a Newmarket morning, and we simply allow for it in the schedule.

Can you collect from the Rowley Mile after racing?

Yes, though rarely from inside the car park, which empties slowly and in one direction. We agree a point on the approach road and meet you there once the first rush has gone, which usually means walking a few hundred yards and saving half an hour. For hospitality guests we can time it to the last race.

Do you work the Tattersalls sales weeks?

We do, and they are among the busiest weeks in our calendar here. Buyers arrive through Stansted and Heathrow and often need moving between the sale ring, the studs and their hotel several times a day. Booking the car for the day rather than journey by journey works far better when the schedule is fluid.

How do I get from Newmarket to Heathrow?

By the A14 and M11 to the M25, about eighty-five miles and between an hour and three-quarters and two and a half hours. There is no faster route and no useful rail alternative with luggage. For a morning long-haul departure we normally leave between three and four in the morning.
