Chauffeur service in Motherwell and the Clyde valley

Motherwell is a railway town before it is anything else, with a station that half of Scotland changes at and a motorway junction a couple of minutes away.

Chauffeur service in Motherwell — summary

Ground time is the part of a Motherwell journey nobody plans and everybody feels. In Motherwell that means the walk to the car, the wait at the kerb on M74 and the queue at the drop-off, none of which appear on a ticket. First Class Chauffeurs takes that half: transfers to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle, an indicative 30-50 minutes to Glasgow over roughly 20 miles, arrivals met inside the terminal, hourly hire around Strathclyde Country Park, and station collections at Motherwell. Vehicles are matched to passengers and cases rather than to the occasion, whether the pick-up is Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility or a private address. Nothing is published as a price list, and the written quotation confirms what your Motherwell booking costs.

01Motherwell, the short version

Chauffeur service in Motherwell

The station here is a genuine junction, with services to Glasgow, Edinburgh, the west coast main line south and the branches into Lanarkshire, so a good deal of our work starts with meeting a train rather than a flight. It has a proper forecourt too, which is more than can be said for a lot of Scottish stations.

Around it, the town has changed considerably since the steelworks closed, with the Ravenscraig site redeveloped and new roads built across it. Strathclyde Park sits to the north-west, shared with Hamilton, and the M74 runs past the eastern side. Both airports are inside the hour.

03The area

Where Motherwell is wide, and where it is not

What M74 and the roads around it do to a timetable.

A working town on a slope above the Clyde valley. The centre around Brandon Parade and Merry Street is compact with a one-way arrangement and a good deal of bus movement. The roads around the station and the civic centre are the busiest. North-west towards Strathclyde Park the ground drops away to the loch. On the Ravenscraig side the roads are new and wide, built for a development that is still filling in, and they are among the easiest in the area to drive.

04Demand

The reasons a car leaves Motherwell

What Motherwell books when the itinerary already has a flight in the middle of it.

Rail connections generate a lot of it, particularly people arriving from the south on the west coast line and needing the last leg by road. University Hospital Wishaw nearby serves a wide catchment. The council offices and civic buildings bring official travel. Football at Fir Park has its own pattern. And, as everywhere in Lanarkshire, there is a steady flow of airport work to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

05Road time

The hours that matter in Motherwell

Morning, evening and the quiet middle, as M74 sees them.

The M74 in both peaks is the main constraint, along with the A723 into the town at school times. Match days at Fir Park close and congest the streets immediately around the ground for a couple of hours. Strathclyde Park events, watersports competitions in particular, put concentrated traffic onto the junction 5 and 6 approaches. Rail replacement weekends fill the station forecourt with coaches, which is worth knowing before you arrive.

06The kerb

Finding the car in Motherwell

Permit bays, loading bays and the Motherwell kerb.

Motherwell station has a forecourt with a proper set-down and a rank, and it is one of the easier collection points in Lanarkshire. The town centre streets are short-stay with enforcement, so a longer wait uses a car park. Fir Park has no useful standing on match days and we meet several streets away. On the Ravenscraig side the new roads have space to wait, and the leisure centre there has its own parking.

Collection notes for Motherwell

  • 01Motherwell station has a proper forecourt with a set-down and a rank, and it works well for meeting west coast main line services.
  • 02On rail replacement weekends the forecourt fills with coaches, so we collect from the road outside instead.
  • 03Match days at Fir Park congest the surrounding streets; we arrange a meeting point several streets back from the ground.
  • 04The new roads across the Ravenscraig site have room to wait and are the easiest addresses in the area.
  • 05Town centre bays are short-stay and enforced, so a longer wait goes into a car park.

07Included as standard

What comes with a car in the ML1 district

  • 01

Tracked from the tail number into Glasgow

If the aircraft holds over the airfield for half an hour, the chauffeur stays put and the drive into Motherwell starts later. Nothing on the written Motherwell quotation moves because of it.

  • 02

    Luggage, properly handled in Motherwell

Child seats take up boot space as well as needing fitting before the car reaches Motherwell. Tell us the ages when you enquire from Motherwell and the seat is in the car when it arrives, rather than in the boot beside your luggage.

  • 03

One car, one price, two Motherwell addresses

Two collections in Motherwell on one run is ordinary: a house, then a colleague at University Hospital Wishaw, then out to the airport. One car, one chauffeur, one figure covering the whole run from M74 to Glasgow.

  • 04

The driver, not just a car, in Motherwell

Punctuality in Motherwell means being in position before the booked time rather than at it. The chauffeur is standing on the street in Motherwell with the engine off while you are still finding your passport.

  • 05

The welcome on the Glasgow concourse

Groups are met the same way, with one chauffeur per car and a single point to gather at inside Glasgow before the run into Motherwell. Four people and eight cases across two saloons into Motherwell is usually calmer than everyone waiting at Glasgow for one large vehicle.

  • 06

    The written quotation for Motherwell

A price you have to ask for is only a price that moves if the answer changes with who is asking. It does not here: the same Motherwell journey is quoted the same way for everybody, and the written quotation adds the specifics of your own run.

08Terminals

Flights out of Glasgow and back into Motherwell

The figures are the ones we plan our own cars around in Motherwell. They are not padded to look impressive, and not trimmed to make Glasgow look closer to Motherwell than it is. On a wet Monday out of Motherwell, the higher end of each range is the honest one.

We would rather sit outside your Motherwell door for ten minutes than arrive at Glasgow with none. The collection time on a Motherwell booking is set with that bias, and it is why the drive itself is usually unremarkable.

Return legs into Motherwell get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Glasgow and drives you back to the same door in Motherwell.

We would rather send the right car to Motherwell than the most expensive one. If your run from Motherwell is two people and a weekend bag, the E-Class does it properly and the difference stays in your pocket.

Where one car does a whole day across Motherwell, comfort compounds. Six hours in a First Saloon across Motherwell is a materially different day from six hours in something smaller, and the hourly rates reflect that.

Loading the boot in Motherwell

LF-03Loading the boot in Motherwell

Loading the boot in Motherwell

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Motherwell and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere M74 will tolerate. In Motherwell the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

Leaving Motherwell carries most of the variables. Once the car is past M74 the rest of the run is arithmetic, and the arithmetic was done before your collection time was set.

  • Water, a charger and a cabin set for whatever Motherwell is doing that morning
  • A written price agreed before the car is allocated to Motherwell
  • Chauffeur, vehicle and registration on the Motherwell confirmation before the day
  • Car in position ahead of the booked time, parked legally near Strathclyde Country Park

Getting home to Motherwell after a long flight

A proper meet at Glasgow begins while you are still in the air and the car is still in Motherwell. We watch the aircraft, adjust for the actual landing time rather than the printed one, and the chauffeur leaves Motherwell in time to be inside the Glasgow hall with a name board when the doors open.

Late arrivals into Glasgow get the same standard as morning ones, and the same drive into the ML1 district. Nothing reduces after midnight, and the drive into Motherwell is planned with the same care whether or not anyone is awake at the far end.

  • Private arrivals met airside at the Glasgow handling agent, then driven to Motherwell
  • No telephone call from an Glasgow car park before the run to Motherwell
  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Motherwell

Rail into Motherwell, car for the rest

A collection at Motherwell has a small choreography to it: the right entrance, the right side of the barrier, and a chauffeur standing on the concourse rather than sending a map pin and hoping.

Rail into Motherwell and a car onward to Glasgow is a common shape, and it is one booking rather than two. The chauffeur holds the Motherwell train number and the Glasgow flight number together.

Hourly hire, Motherwell to Hamilton

Hourly hire, Motherwell to Hamilton

Visiting Motherwell for a day from elsewhere is the classic case: train into Motherwell, car waiting on the right side of the station, four hours of moving about, then back to the platform with a margin.

Common shapes for this work: a morning of meetings, a day between Strathclyde Country Park and Hamilton, a wedding where the car is needed at both ends, or an evening that begins at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility and ends somewhere nobody has decided yet.

Making a Motherwell booking

We answer with a price, a vehicle class and a Motherwell collection time we would genuinely recommend, usually inside the hour. If that time looks early for a Motherwell address, it is early on purpose.

Once the Motherwell booking is confirmed you get the chauffeur's name, the vehicle and the registration before the day. On the morning itself you get one message when the car is in position on M74 or wherever it can legally stand.

17Answers

Motherwell chauffeur questions

What people ask before booking a car in Motherwell, and the honest answers.

Do you meet trains at Motherwell station?

Frequently, and it is one of the better stations in Lanarkshire for it. There is a real forecourt with a set-down area rather than a kerb on a busy road, so the car can stand while you come out. Tell us the service you are on and the chauffeur watches it rather than the timetable, which matters on the west coast main line.

How long does it take to reach Edinburgh Airport from Motherwell?

Around forty miles and usually fifty minutes to an hour and twenty, taking the A725 and M8 east or the M74 and A71 depending on traffic. It is one of the few places where both central belt airports are genuinely comparable, so we would pick on the flight and the hour rather than assume Glasgow every time.

Can you collect near Strathclyde Park for an event?

Yes, and naming the car park is the thing that makes it work. The park is large, wraps around a loch and has several separate entrances shared with Hamilton on the other side, so the general postcode is not much use on a busy day. With a specific car park and gate we get to you rather than to the wrong end of the water.

Is Wishaw covered from the same base as Motherwell?

It is, and the two run into one another. University Hospital Wishaw is a regular destination for us, with a drop-off at the main entrance separate from the visitor parking. From Wishaw the M74 is a few minutes further east than from Motherwell, so airport timings are effectively the same with perhaps five minutes in it.
