Chauffeur coverage across the London Borough of Merton, Wimbledon to Mitcham

Merton is built around one very famous fortnight. For two weeks in summer the borough runs to a different timetable, and we run to it too.

Chauffeur service in Merton — summary

First Class Chauffeurs drives Merton in London boroughs, and most of the work here is the ground half of a longer journey: the run out to Heathrow before a flight, the car waiting when one lands, and days held by the hour between the All England Lawn Tennis Club and Wimbledon Common and the Windmill. Collections are made from private addresses, from Cherry Red Records Stadium, and from the taxi rank side of Colliers Wood rather than the drop-off lane. Heathrow is an indicative 35-65 minutes from Merton, about 15 miles by road, using A219 Wimbledon Hill Road and Parkside. Vehicles run from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class up to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, whichever Merton address the car is going to. Every class is quoted individually; the written quotation for Merton confirms the final price, what it covers and any applicable tax.

01Setting out from Merton

Chauffeur service in Merton

The borough covers Wimbledon and Wimbledon Village, South Wimbledon, Merton Park, Raynes Park, Colliers Wood, Mitcham, Morden and Motspur Park. Merton Civic Centre is on London Road in Morden, at the southern end of the Northern line, which puts the administrative centre a good way from the borough’s best-known corner.

We cover all of it. The two things worth knowing are the tennis, which reshapes the roads around Church Road for a fortnight from late June, and the trams, which run through Mitcham and Morden Road and change how junctions behave in a way that surprises drivers from north of the river.

03The area

Turnings, one-ways and A219 Wimbledon Hill Road and Parkside

the All England Lawn Tennis Club looks straightforward on a map. The kerb outside it is another matter in Merton.

Wimbledon Village at the top of the hill is narrow, expensive and short of parking, with the common beyond it. Wimbledon town centre at the bottom is a full-scale shopping district around a station that carries tube, tram and mainline services. Raynes Park and Merton Park are quiet suburbia with driveways. Mitcham in the east is flatter and more industrial, with the tram running through and a common in the middle. Morden at the south is a busy junction town.

04Demand

The bookings Merton actually makes

Airports first, hourly work second, long runs third: roughly the order Merton calls in.

The borough sits almost exactly between Heathrow and Gatwick, so the airport work divides in roughly equal measure. Tennis fortnight brings a distinct stream of guests, hospitality and players’ parties needing collection at specific gates. AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane produces matchday work. The theatres in the town centre generate evening bookings, and Wimbledon Village adds restaurant and event returns.

05Road time

What A219 Wimbledon Hill Road and Parkside does, and when it does it

How much spare time a Merton booking is given, and why.

Wimbledon Hill Road and the Broadway are slow from eight to nine and four to six, and the town centre is busy through Saturday. During the Championships, Church Road, Somerset Road and the approaches from the Village are subject to a managed traffic scheme with restricted access, and journeys across that part of the borough take far longer than usual. Tram crossings add short delays at several junctions in Mitcham.

06The kerb

Finding each other at the Merton kerb

One message, naming the exact spot on A219 Wimbledon Hill Road and Parkside. That is the whole of the Merton system.

Wimbledon Village has short-stay bays and very little else, so a car collects and moves rather than waits. The town centre station has a set-down that works outside peak times. Suburban Merton has driveways almost everywhere. During the tennis, access to the streets around the All England Club is controlled and we set down at agreed points outside the restricted area rather than attempting the gates.

Collection notes for Merton

  • 01During the Championships the streets around Church Road are managed and restricted. We set down outside the controlled area and agree a gate for collection.
  • 02Wimbledon Village has short-stay bays only, so the car collects and moves rather than waits on the hill.
  • 03Tram crossings in Mitcham and on Morden Road hold traffic briefly at several junctions; we allow for them rather than treating them as ordinary lights.
  • 04Wimbledon station is a tube, tram and mainline interchange. Tell us which service you arrive on and we will meet you at the right exit.

07Included as standard

Not extras: what a Merton car comes with

  • 01

Luggage sized before the Merton booking

Cabin bags only is a different Merton booking from a family moving house. Both are ordinary work out of Merton. They are simply different cars, and the quotation names which one is coming to Merton.

  • 02

    The Heathrow handover

Nobody has to send a message from the aisle to say the flight into Heathrow is late and Merton will have to wait. We know when the aircraft touched down at Heathrow, we know roughly how long that hall takes at that hour, and the chauffeur times the walk in against it before the drive to Merton.

  • 03

    Per vehicle out of Merton

Extra time on an hourly Merton booking is charged at the published rate and confirmed in writing afterwards. It is not applied at the roadside in Merton and it is not a penalty.

  • 04

Colliers Wood arrivals tracked as well

Rail-and-road itineraries into Merton get both legs watched: the train to Colliers Wood, and where the day started at an airport, the flight before it. One Merton booking, one price, two things monitored.

  • 05

Knows where to stand near Cherry Red Records Stadium

If the collection in Merton is genuinely awkward, a gated entrance or a courtyard behind the All England Lawn Tennis Club, the chauffeur will have looked at it before the day rather than at the moment it starts to matter.

  • 06

    Second pick-ups in Wimbledon

Waiting at Heathrow runs from touchdown rather than from the scheduled landing, which is the only version of that arrangement that survives a delayed flight into Merton.

Your confirmation names the chauffeur, the vehicle and the registration, and the car is on the Merton street early. If the only legal space is round the corner from the All England Lawn Tennis Club, that is where it will be, and you will know before you put your coat on.

The route out of Merton is chosen for the hour rather than for the map. Sometimes that means the long way round past Wimbledon Common and the Windmill, and the chauffeur takes it without announcing how clever it was.

For a private flight the clock runs on the Heathrow handling agent's slot rather than on a check-in cut-off, which changes the Merton collection time. That usually compresses the Merton timings, and it means the car finishes airside instead of at a terminal door.

If the flight is cancelled while you are still on A219 Wimbledon Hill Road and Parkside, tell the chauffeur. The car turns round, goes back to Merton, and the rebooking is handled in writing rather than at a kerb.

Being met when you land at Heathrow

Being met when you land at Heathrow

We treat the arrival as the harder half of a Merton job. Anyone can drive from Merton to Heathrow; being in the right hall at the right minute after a delayed flight is the part that takes attention.

From the barrier it is a short walk to the car and then an indicative 35-65 minutes back to Merton, usually by A219 Wimbledon Hill Road and Parkside. The boot takes the cases, the cabin is warm, and nobody asks you a question between Heathrow and Merton.

  • Private arrivals met airside at the Heathrow handling agent, then driven to Merton
  • No telephone call from an Heathrow car park before the run to Merton
  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Merton
  • The same chauffeur who drove you out of Merton

Days built round Merton tend to sprawl. Hourly hire absorbs that: the chauffeur waits near the All England Lawn Tennis Club, the boot holds whatever you are carrying, and you stop planning the transport between the things you are actually doing.

An evening that begins at Cherry Red Records Stadium and ends somewhere nobody has decided yet is an ordinary booking rather than a difficult one. That is more or less the whole reason for holding a car in Merton.

MPVs leaving Merton earn their keep on luggage rather than passengers. Three adults with real suitcases out of Merton is a V-Class booking, even though three adults on their own would sit in a saloon perfectly happily.

Child seats, extra luggage, skis and golf bags all change the answer for a Merton booking. Tell us what is going in the boot when you enquire from Merton and we will name the class that takes it rather than the one that nearly does.

Where the itinerary is rail then road into Merton, we track the train the same way we track a flight. A twenty-minute delay into Colliers Wood moves the chauffeur's arrival, not your booking.

A station drop from Merton is quoted the same way as an airport one, with the cases carried to the barrier and enough margin that nobody is running for the platform at the end.

17Answers

Merton chauffeur questions

The practical ones: where the car waits in Merton, when it leaves, and what it costs.

Can you get a car close to the tennis during the Championships?

Close, but not to the gates. The streets around the All England Club run under a managed traffic scheme for the fortnight with restricted access and a park and ride in operation. We set down at an agreed point outside it and collect from a named gate afterwards, which is both quicker and less frustrating.

Is Merton better placed for Heathrow or Gatwick?

It sits almost equidistant, which is unusual. Heathrow is about fifteen miles by the A3 and M4 or the A24 and M25; Gatwick is about twenty-five down the A24 and M23. Traffic on the day usually decides which is quicker, and we quote both honestly rather than steering you to one.

Do the trams affect journeys through Mitcham and Morden?

They do, mildly but predictably. Tram crossings hold traffic at several junctions for longer than an ordinary signal, and the alignment along Morden Road restricts turns. It is a couple of minutes rather than a problem, but a driver who has not worked here before will misjudge it.

Which areas of Merton have their own pages?

Wimbledon, Morden, Mitcham and Raynes Park each have separate entries. This borough page covers the rest of the administrative area, including Wimbledon Village, South Wimbledon, Merton Park, Colliers Wood, Motspur Park and Wimbledon Park.
