Chauffeur service in Llandudno and the Great Orme

A Victorian resort laid out on a grid between two headlands, which makes Llandudno one of the few Welsh towns where a chauffeur can genuinely pull up outside the front door.

Chauffeur service in Llandudno — summary

Llandudno sits in Wales, and a chauffeur here spends more time on A546, B5115 and A55 than anywhere else. First Class Chauffeurs covers the whole of Llandudno for airport transfers, private aviation runs, executive travel and hourly work, with flights tracked from the tail number so a delay changes our arrival time rather than yours. Liverpool John Lennon is an indicative 1 hour 20 minutes-1 hour 50 minutes and about 65 miles from Llandudno. Landmarks used as reference points for pick-ups include West Shore, Great Orme Tramway and Happy Valley. Neighbouring coverage runs to Conwy, Colwyn Bay and Bangor. Nothing here is published as a price list; the written quotation for Llandudno is what fixes the price.

01Llandudno, briefly

Chauffeur service in Llandudno

The town was planned, and it shows. The streets run in straight lines between the Great Orme and the Little Orme, the hotels face the bay along a broad crescent, and Mostyn Street runs parallel behind them. For a car that means clear sightlines, sensible turning and hotel frontages with room to stand, which is not something we can say about most of Wales.

The A55 passes a couple of miles inland at Llandudno Junction, so getting out towards Chester, Liverpool or Manchester is quick. Getting up the Great Orme is a different matter: the Marine Drive is a one-way toll road around the headland, narrow in places, and it is a scenic route rather than a way of getting anywhere.

03The area

A working map of Llandudno

The geometry of Llandudno: where a saloon fits and where it does not.

Wide streets, big hotels and a promenade that curves for the best part of a mile. The North Parade and the Promenade have space for a car to draw up outside a hotel, which governs how most collections work here. Behind that, Mostyn Street is the main shopping run with sections restricted to buses and loading, and the residential streets on the West Shore side are quieter with room to park. The Great Orme road above the town is steep, narrow and one-way for much of its length.

04Demand

What Llandudno needs a chauffeur for

What people in Llandudno actually ask a chauffeur to do.

Conference and event work at Venue Cymru is the largest single strand, bringing delegates in from Manchester and Liverpool and moving them again at the end. The hotels along the front generate a steady flow of arrivals and departures throughout the season. Weddings are common here. There is also a lot of touring work: people using Llandudno as a base and wanting a car for a day into Snowdonia, Anglesey or Chester.

05Road time

The hours that matter in Llandudno

Counting backwards from check-in at Liverpool John Lennon to a door in Llandudno.

Summer Saturdays are the pressure point on the A55, with the westbound queue towards the Conwy Tunnel building through the morning. Locally, the promenade fills from mid-morning on a fine day and the Orme road is busy with visitors. Venue Cymru event finishes put a lot of people onto the same few streets at once, so we position early. Out of season the town is quick to move around at almost any hour.

06The kerb

The kerb in Llandudno, and what it allows

Where a car can legally wait near West Shore, and where it cannot.

Hotel forecourts and the parade itself are the normal collection points, and most of the larger hotels have a proper set-down. Mostyn Street has restrictions through the middle section. Llandudno station is at the end of a cul-de-sac with a small forecourt that works well. Venue Cymru has its own parking and a covered entrance, which is a good deal easier than the alternatives on a wet evening. The Great Orme summit has a car park; the Marine Drive is toll and one-way.

Collection notes for Llandudno

  • 01Most seafront hotels have a set-down at the door, so we collect at the entrance rather than asking you to walk to a car park.
  • 02Venue Cymru has covered access and its own parking, which we use for event arrivals and departures.
  • 03The Great Orme Marine Drive is one-way and tolled, so it is a scenic option rather than a route between two points.
  • 04Llandudno station sits at the end of its own approach road with a small forecourt that takes a car comfortably.
  • 05On summer Saturdays we allow extra for the A55 westbound queue towards the Conwy Tunnel.

The things nobody should have to ask for in Llandudno

  • 01

From wheels-up to the Llandudno kerb

A delay at Liverpool John Lennon is our problem to solve. We move the chauffeur's start time in Llandudno, hold the car, and the price on your written quotation does not move because the airline's did.

  • 02

    Four cases out of Llandudno

The chauffeur lifts and loads at the Llandudno kerb. In the rain on A546 with a laptop bag under one arm, that is worth more than most of the things chauffeur companies get compared on.

  • 03

Where the car waits near West Shore

Where the day has no fixed shape, book the car from the first address in Llandudno and release it when you have finished. Everything between that and West Shore can be decided as it happens.

  • 04

Knows the loading bays around West Shore

Every chauffeur working Llandudno is licensed for private hire and drives one of our own vehicles. Beyond that, what matters here is that they know Llandudno: the turnings, the loading bays and the two minutes it takes to walk from Great Orme Tramway.

  • 05

The walk out of Liverpool John Lennon, with help

We watch the flight from the tail number, so the chauffeur is standing in Liverpool John Lennon arrivals when you clear customs rather than circling on the way in from Llandudno. Waiting time from touchdown is built into the Llandudno transfer.

  • 06

Nothing added after Liverpool John Lennon

Tell us the shape of a job around West Shore and the figure comes back before you commit to anything. The written quotation for a Llandudno booking confirms the final figure and what sits inside it.

We treat the arrival as the harder half of a Llandudno job. Anyone can drive from Llandudno to Liverpool John Lennon; being in the right hall at the right minute after a delayed flight is the part that takes attention.

The car leaves Liverpool John Lennon by whichever exit is moving, which is not always the one the signs suggest, and comes into Llandudno on B5115. You will be at your Llandudno door within the time the confirmation gave you.

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Llandudno and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere A546 will tolerate. In Llandudno the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

Where a second passenger joins in Conwy, that stop is already on the booking and the chauffeur has the address. Nobody is telephoning anybody from a Llandudno kerb to ask where they have got to.

  • Cases carried from the door in Llandudno rather than watched

Saloon or MPV out of Llandudno is usually a luggage question rather than a comfort one. The boot of a saloon takes two large cases with three people aboard; beyond that the V-Class earns its keep on any run out of Llandudno.

Availability is confirmed when the Llandudno booking is, not on a web page. What this page can tell you is which class suits which Llandudno journey, and where each one sits against the others.

Most missed flights out of Liverpool John Lennon are lost somewhere in the LL30 district rather than in the air. Out of Llandudno the ground problem is A546 between about seven and half past nine, and the answer is leaving before it rather than driving harder through it.

Return legs into Llandudno get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Liverpool John Lennon and drives you back to the same door in Llandudno.

The advantage is not the car; it is not having to think about the car while you are crossing Llandudno. Your bag stays in the boot, your coat stays on the seat, and the chauffeur is outside Great Orme Copper Mines when you come back out of it.

An evening that begins at Great Orme Copper Mines and ends somewhere nobody has decided yet is an ordinary booking rather than a difficult one. That is more or less the whole reason for holding a car in Llandudno.

Rail into Llandudno and a car onward to Liverpool John Lennon is a common shape, and it is one booking rather than two. The chauffeur holds the Llandudno train number and the Liverpool John Lennon flight number together.

Making a Llandudno booking

A quotation needs four things: when, from where in Llandudno, to where, and how many of you. Everything else about a Llandudno booking is refinement. We come back with the price, the vehicle class and the Llandudno collection time we would recommend.

There is no running total held against a card for Llandudno work. The figure for a Llandudno journey is agreed first and settled afterwards, on the terms the quotation already set out.

17Answers

Llandudno chauffeur questions

The questions A546 and Liverpool John Lennon between them tend to raise.

Can a car pick up directly outside a hotel on Llandudno promenade?

In most cases yes, which is one of the pleasant things about working here. The parade is wide, the hotels have set-down space at their entrances and there is room to draw up without obstructing the road. On a busy summer afternoon it can take a moment to find the gap, so the chauffeur will normally arrive a few minutes early and be in position when you come out.

Do you provide cars for conferences at Venue Cymru?

Regularly, and usually in both directions: delegates in from Manchester or Liverpool at the start, and back again at the end. The venue has covered access and its own parking, so arrivals are comfortable in bad weather. For a large closing session we position cars before the hall empties rather than joining the queue that forms outside afterwards.

Is a day trip from Llandudno into Snowdonia realistic?

Very. Betws-y-Coed is around half an hour down the A470, Llanberis about an hour, and Beddgelert a little more. The roads are single carriageway and busy in season, so a full day works better than trying to fit several valleys into a morning. We would suggest picking two or three places rather than a circuit, and starting earlier than feels necessary.

How long is the drive from Llandudno to Manchester Airport?

About eighty-five miles and normally an hour and forty to two hours twenty. The A55 to Chester is quick and reliable; the M56 afterwards is the part that varies. For a departure before nine in the morning we leave Llandudno very early, because the eastbound M56 from around half six onwards can add half an hour without any incident at all.
