Chauffeur service in Lincoln — summary

A158 decides most of what happens on a Lincoln booking, which is why the collection time on your confirmation is worked from it rather than from a postcode. First Class Chauffeurs drives the ground half of the journey here: out to Birmingham in the morning, back from it late, and hourly work in between that starts at Lincoln Castle and finishes wherever the day ends. The airport run out of Lincoln is an indicative 1 hour 55 to 2 hours 40 over about 100 miles. Arrivals at Birmingham are met inside the hall with a name board before the drive back into Lincoln. Vehicles run from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and the Lincoln price is confirmed in writing before you travel.

01The Lincoln summary

Chauffeur service in Lincoln

Steep Hill is cobbled, one in seven and closed to traffic for most of its length, so reaching the cathedral means going round by Lindum Road or Michaelgate rather than straight up. Anyone booking a car to the Bailgate is generally surprised by the route and never surprised by the time.

Downhill, the High Street is crossed on the level by the railway right beside Lincoln Central. The barriers come down often enough that we treat the crossing as a scheduled delay rather than a risk, and we plan collections on the side of it you actually need.

03The area

Driving Lincoln: the practical version

The Bailgate looks straightforward on a map. The kerb outside it is another matter in Lincoln.

A cathedral on a limestone edge above a flat city, with a Roman gate you still drive under at Newport Arch. The uphill streets are narrow, cobbled in places and have residents parking throughout. Downhill is Victorian and commercial around the High Street and Brayford Pool, with the university on the water. The eastern bypass took a good deal of through traffic away from the middle. Beyond the city the county opens out into some of the flattest and emptiest roads in England, where the limits are high and the junctions are not.

04Demand

The Lincoln diary, in outline

Who needs a car in Lincoln, and at what hour.

The cathedral and the castle bring visitors all year, with the Christmas market being the single busiest weekend. The university has grown quickly and generates parents and conference traffic. The county hospital serves an enormous rural catchment. RAF stations across the county add a steady professional flow. And there is a distinct long-distance airport pattern here, because nothing is close and people would rather be driven than leave a car somewhere for two weeks.

05Road time

What the traffic does in Lincoln, and when

The timing we would use if the booking out of Lincoln were our own.

The High Street level crossing barriers are the local currency of lost minutes, and they matter most between four and six. Canwick Hill and Lindum Road are slow uphill at peak. During the Christmas market the whole uphill area is closed to traffic and the park and ride carries everything. On the county roads a tractor or a slow-moving load costs ten minutes, and the A15 and A46 have no way round.

06The kerb

Where a long car can stand near The Bailgate

Permit bays, loading bays and the Lincoln kerb.

Lincoln Central has a forecourt with a set-down on the station side and a car park behind. The Bailgate and Steep Hill area is pedestrian or permit-only, so uphill collections happen on Lindum Road, Eastgate or the Castle Square end. The county hospital on Greetwell Road has a main entrance drop-off. In the villages, addresses on the fen roads are often a mile from the nearest named turning, so we ask for the direction of approach as well as the address.

Collection notes for Lincoln

  • 01The High Street level crossing beside the station closes often; we plan the collection on the side you actually need.
  • 02Uphill collections are on Lindum Road, Eastgate or Castle Square — Steep Hill and the Bailgate are not for cars.
  • 03During the Christmas market the uphill area is closed entirely and we work from the park and ride sites.
  • 04Fen addresses can be a mile from the nearest named turning, so we agree the direction of approach in advance.

07Included as standard

Not extras: what a Lincoln car comes with

  • 01

The welcome on the Birmingham concourse

A meet is a person inside Birmingham, holding a board with your name on it and a car pointed at Lincoln. Not a pin on a map and not a call from the roadside on A158. The distinction sounds small until you are the one at Birmingham with three cases, a dead phone and a Lincoln address to reach.

  • 02

    Luggage, properly handled in Lincoln

The first question on any Lincoln booking is how many cases, because that decides the vehicle. Everything else about a Lincoln journey is easier to change afterwards than the size of the boot.

  • 03

Knows which end of A158 to avoid

The knowledge that earns its keep in Lincoln is not the fastest route. It is which kerb tolerates a stationary car at half past seven, where the permit bays stop, and which entrance at Lincolnshire Showground is used for loading.

  • 04

    What the Lincoln price includes

Nothing about the Lincoln price should be a surprise afterwards. The quotation is the reference point: time, address in Lincoln, vehicle, figure. If any of those changes, a new Lincoln quotation is sent.

  • 05

Tracked from the tail number into Birmingham

The point of tracking is that the chauffeur's start time in Lincoln is ours to move and not yours. You do not message us from the aisle, and no Lincoln booking is charged for the hour the airline lost before it ever reached Birmingham.

  • 06

One car, one price, two Lincoln addresses

Stops along A158 are built into the quotation. A pharmacy, a school gate in Lincoln or twenty minutes at Lincolnshire Showground all go into the plan before the car sets off.

08Terminals

What the drive to Birmingham involves

Reading the table: the drive is door to terminal from a Lincoln address, and the mileage is what the car will actually cover on A158 and the roads beyond it. Return legs into Lincoln are met inside the arrivals hall at Birmingham.
Birmingham

1 hour 55 to 2 hours 40 is the mid-morning figure. A Friday afternoon out of Lincoln is not that.

The working detail of a Lincoln booking

The outbound run to Birmingham

LF-01The outbound run to Birmingham

The outbound run to Birmingham

A pre-dawn departure out of Lincoln is easier to plan than a nine o'clock one. A158 is empty, the drive sits close to its lower bound, and the only variable left is how long you take to reach the car.

Return legs into Lincoln get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Birmingham and drives you back to the same door in Lincoln.

Cars, cases and A158

LF-02Cars, cases and A158

Cars, cases and A158

The honest starting point is that every class leaves Lincoln and reaches Birmingham in the same 1 hour 55 to 2 hours 40. Choosing between them for a Lincoln booking is a question about the boot and the back seat rather than about the engine.

Where one car does a whole day across Lincoln, comfort compounds. Six hours in a First Saloon across Lincoln is a materially different day from six hours in something smaller, and the hourly rates reflect that.

The ten minutes before you leave Lincoln

LF-03The ten minutes before you leave Lincoln

The ten minutes before you leave Lincoln

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Lincoln and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere A158 will tolerate. In Lincoln the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

The handover in Lincoln takes about forty seconds and then the car is gone. Where the run continues from Lincoln to Birmingham, the chauffeur will tell you the indicative arrival once and then leave you alone with it.

  • Collections from Lincolnshire Showground arranged through the desk, not the forecourt
  • The car holds on Lincoln Eastern Bypass when the kerb outside your door will not take it
  • Cases carried from the door in Lincoln rather than watched
  • Chauffeur briefed on the Lincoln address before the car sets off

Getting home to Lincoln after a long flight

Landing at Birmingham after a long flight, with Lincoln still to come, is the point at which most ground arrangements fall over. A Lincoln return is built for it. The chauffeur is inside arrivals, the car is close, and the drive back into Lincoln starts within a few minutes of you clearing customs.

Late arrivals into Birmingham get the same standard as morning ones, and the same drive into the LN1 district. Nothing reduces after midnight, and the drive into Lincoln is planned with the same care whether or not anyone is awake at the far end.

  • Late landings still end with the cases at your door in Lincoln
  • Return route into Lincoln chosen at the airport exit rather than in advance
  • A second drop in Newark-on-Trent priced into the same booking

Rail into Lincoln, car for the rest

LF-05Rail into Lincoln, car for the rest

Rail into Lincoln, car for the rest

The awkward part of arriving at Lincoln Central is not the walk. It is the walk with luggage, in the dark, into a Lincoln taxi queue with eleven people already in it.

If the train into Lincoln Central is cancelled entirely, the car can meet you wherever you end up instead. That flexibility is easier to arrange in advance than at the moment it is needed, so mention it when you book the Lincoln leg.

The paperwork behind a Lincoln journey

Hourly hire around Lincoln

LF-06Hourly hire around Lincoln

Hourly hire around Lincoln

Days built round Lincoln tend to sprawl. Hourly hire absorbs that: the chauffeur waits near The Bailgate, the boot holds whatever you are carrying, and you stop planning the transport between the things you are actually doing.

The chauffeur will ask for a mobile number and then use it about once per stop, which is the right amount of communication for a day spent moving around Lincoln.

We would rather have too much detail than too little about Lincoln. One sentence about where you will actually be standing in Lincoln saves more time on the day than anything else you could tell us.

Regular bookings out of Lincoln run on the same written basis as one-off journeys. Each Lincoln journey is priced before it happens rather than totted up somewhere and presented afterwards.

17Answers

Lincoln chauffeur questions

Timing, kerbs and price, as they apply in Lincoln.

Can a car take me up to Lincoln Cathedral?

Not up Steep Hill, which is cobbled, one in seven and closed to traffic. We go round by Lindum Road or Michaelgate and set down at Castle Square or on Eastgate, both of which are level and a short walk from the west front.

How much does the High Street level crossing hold traffic up?

Enough to plan around. The barriers come down frequently through the day and the queue reaches back into the one-way system in the evening peak. We treat it as a scheduled delay and pick the side of it you need.

Which airport do you use from Lincoln?

It depends on the flight, because nothing is close. Leeds Bradford is around ninety miles, Birmingham a hundred and Manchester a hundred and five. All are two hours or more, so we set the pickup by the check-in time rather than the mileage.

Do you cover the villages out towards Sleaford and Market Rasen?

Yes, along with Bardney, Nettleham and the Cliff villages. Fen and wold addresses often sit a long way from a named turning, so we ask which direction to approach from and confirm a gate or a farm name.
