Chauffeur service in Harrogate, HG1 and the roads round the Stray

Two hundred acres of common land wrap round the southern side of Harrogate, and no road crosses it that was not already there. That shapes every journey in.

Chauffeur service in Harrogate — summary

Harrogate sits next to Leeds, Otley and Ilkley, and bookings frequently pick up in two of them on the same run. Chauffeur service in Harrogate covers airport transfers, station collections, hourly hire and long-distance work, with the drive to Leeds Bradford taking an indicative 25-45 minutes over about 12 miles. The chauffeur finds the legal stopping point near The Stray before the booked time, sends one message naming it, and waits. Flights into Leeds Bradford are tracked from the tail number, so a delay moves our clock rather than your Harrogate booking. Vehicles run from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, all quoted per journey rather than per passenger, and the Harrogate quotation confirms the figure.

01The Harrogate summary

Chauffeur service in Harrogate

The Stray forces traffic round rather than through, so approaching from the south or east means following its edge along Slingsby Walk or Otley Road. It is not a delay so much as a fixed route, and once you know it the town is easy. Parking on the Stray itself is not permitted, which rules out the obvious waiting spot.

The convention centre sits behind the Royal Hall on Kings Road with the main hotels within walking distance, and when a large conference is on the town fills completely. Leeds Bradford is twelve miles down the A658, which makes delegate transfers short and frequent, and they arrive in blocks rather than singly.

03The area

What Harrogate is like to drive

Why the last two hundred yards in Harrogate take longer than the two miles before them.

A spa town that kept its proportions: broad streets, stone terraces, gardens and a good deal of green. Parliament Street and James Street form the retail core and are busy but manageable. The Montpellier quarter is tighter with angled parking. Out west the Duchy estate has wide roads and long drives; east towards Starbeck and Knaresborough the pattern is more ordinary. The A61 north to Ripon and the A59 west over Blubberhouses are the two long roads out, and the second of them is exposed and snow-prone.

04Demand

The reasons a car leaves Harrogate

The pattern of a normal week in Harrogate.

The convention centre is the engine. Large exhibitions and conferences fill the hotels and produce airport transfers in blocks, usually to Leeds Bradford and Manchester. The Great Yorkshire Show in July does the same at the showground on the eastern side. The Old Swan, Rudding Park and the Crown take weddings and residential events. And Harrogate itself is affluent and well travelled, so the everyday early-morning airport diary is unusually full.

05Road time

Road time from Harrogate, honestly stated

Counting backwards from check-in at Leeds Bradford to a door in Harrogate.

Parliament Street and the Prince of Wales roundabout slow at both peaks. Conference weeks put hotel traffic onto Kings Road and Ripon Road from early morning. Great Yorkshire Show days fill the A661 and the showground approaches. The A59 over Blubberhouses closes in snow and is the first road round here to do so. For a Leeds Bradford flight we allow forty-five minutes, since the A658 descent and the airport approach both slow at peak.

06The kerb

Doors, boots and the Harrogate pavement

Where we hold the car when A661 will not take a stationary one.

Station Parade holds the set-down, with the bus station alongside and the shopping centre built over part of the site. Parking on the Stray is not permitted at all. In the centre, Parliament Street has short-stay bays with enforcement, so we collect on Crescent Road or the Montpellier side. The convention centre has a set-down on Kings Road that fills during a large event, and we hold on Ripon Road instead. Rudding Park and the country hotels have long drives with a set-down at the entrance.

Collection notes for Harrogate

  • 01Parking on the Stray is not permitted, so we hold on a side street and time the arrival instead.
  • 02During large conferences the Kings Road set-down fills, and we wait on Ripon Road and come in on cue.
  • 03The A59 over Blubberhouses is the first road here to close in snow, and we route via the A61 and A658 instead.
  • 04Country hotel drives at Rudding Park are long; we set down at the entrance rather than in the event parking.

Hand luggage, or eight cases from Harrogate

Cabin bags only is a different Harrogate booking from a family moving house. Both are ordinary work out of Harrogate. They are simply different cars, and the quotation names which one is coming to Harrogate.

  • 02

    Leeds Bradford arrivals, in person

Nobody has to send a message from the aisle to say the flight into Leeds Bradford is late and Harrogate will have to wait. We know when the aircraft touched down at Leeds Bradford, we know roughly how long that hall takes at that hour, and the chauffeur times the walk in against it before the drive to Harrogate.

  • 03

No meter, no surge on a Harrogate run

Extra time on an hourly Harrogate booking is charged at the published rate and confirmed in writing afterwards. It is not applied at the roadside in Harrogate and it is not a penalty.

  • 04

We watch the aircraft into Leeds Bradford

Rail-and-road itineraries into Harrogate get both legs watched: the train to Knaresborough, and where the day started at an airport, the flight before it. One Harrogate booking, one price, two things monitored.

  • 05

The person at the wheel in Harrogate

If the collection in Harrogate is genuinely awkward, a gated entrance or a courtyard behind The Stray, the chauffeur will have looked at it before the day rather than at the moment it starts to matter.

  • 06

The car stays with you across Harrogate

Waiting at Leeds Bradford runs from touchdown rather than from the scheduled landing, which is the only version of that arrangement that survives a delayed flight into Harrogate.

Return legs into Harrogate matter as much as outbound ones. Coming back into Harrogate from Leeds Bradford at six in the evening is not the same journey as the reverse at six in the morning, and one table cannot show both. Reaching Leeds Bradford at one in the morning

The failure mode of ordinary ground transport is familiar: a text message, a Leeds Bradford car park you cannot find, a trolley that will not fit in the lift, and Harrogate still ahead of you. That is not how a return into Harrogate is meant to go.

The car leaves Leeds Bradford by whichever exit is moving, which is not always the one the signs suggest, and comes into Harrogate on A1(M) Junction 47. You will be at your Harrogate door within the time the confirmation gave you.

A half day is four hours in most classes and six in the largest, wherever in Harrogate it starts. That is usually enough for a morning of meetings around The Stray with the car standing by, which is a different thing from four separate bookings and four separate waits.

An evening that begins at Rudding Park and ends somewhere nobody has decided yet is an ordinary booking rather than a difficult one. That is more or less the whole reason for holding a car in Harrogate.

Your confirmation names the chauffeur, the vehicle and the registration, and the car is on the Harrogate street early. If the only legal space is round the corner from The Stray, that is where it will be, and you will know before you put your coat on.

You are not asked to confirm the destination or read out a Harrogate postcode. It is on the booking, the route out of Harrogate is loaded, and the indicative arrival at Leeds Bradford is given once at the start and then left alone.

  • Cases carried from the door in Harrogate rather than watched
  • Chauffeur briefed on the Harrogate address before the car sets off
  • Water, a charger and a cabin set for whatever Harrogate is doing that morning
  • A written price agreed before the car is allocated to Harrogate

A pre-dawn departure out of Harrogate is easier to plan than a nine o'clock one. A661 is empty, the drive sits close to its lower bound, and the only variable left is how long you take to reach the car.

Return legs into Harrogate get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Leeds Bradford and drives you back to the same door in Harrogate.

Where a service into Knaresborough is replaced by a bus for part of the route, say so. The car can meet you at whichever station the train genuinely terminates at, rather than at Knaresborough because the ticket said so.

The chauffeur walks onto the concourse at Knaresborough rather than waiting in the car, particularly where the platform is a long way from the road. That is the part most people book a Knaresborough collection for.

Choosing between classes for Harrogate

LF-06Choosing between classes for Harrogate

Choosing between classes for Harrogate

Suite and Signature classes are for arrivals that are themselves part of the event: a wedding at Rudding Park, a milestone dinner, a photograph that outlives the day. For a five o'clock run out of Harrogate to Leeds Bradford they are unnecessary.

If you are undecided, describe the journey: passengers, cases, where it starts in Harrogate and where it ends. We will recommend a class for Harrogate, and the recommendation is usually cheaper than the one people expect.

What we need to know about your Harrogate journey

LF-07What we need to know about your Harrogate journey

What we need to know about your Harrogate journey

We would rather have too much detail about the Harrogate collection than too little. If the collection in Harrogate is awkward — a gated entrance, a narrow turning off A661, a building with two doors — say so, and the chauffeur is briefed before the day.

Very early and very late Harrogate bookings go through the same process with more margin built in. A car leaving Harrogate before dawn is confirmed in writing exactly like one leaving at noon.

17Answers

Harrogate chauffeur questions

The questions A661 and Leeds Bradford between them tend to raise.

Can you handle delegate transfers for the Harrogate Convention Centre?

Yes, and they are a large part of what we do here. Leeds Bradford is twelve miles up the A658, so airport runs are short. During big events the Kings Road set-down fills, so we hold nearby and come in when you are ready to leave.

Why can a car not wait on the Stray?

Because parking on it is not permitted, and the roads round its edge are the through routes rather than places to stop. We hold on a side street instead and time the arrival to the minute, which works better than looking for a space.

Do you cover Knaresborough, Pannal and Killinghall?

All three, plus Ripon, Boroughbridge and Spofforth. The A61 corridor links most of them and is straightforward, though the Prince of Wales roundabout in Harrogate itself is a reliable delay at both peaks.

What happens if the A59 is closed by snow?

We route via the A61 and A658 instead. The Blubberhouses stretch crosses exposed high ground and is the first road in the district to close, so in poor weather we plan around it rather than set off and hope.
