Chauffeur service in Hammersmith, W6

Hammersmith is the point where the A4 stops being a London street and becomes the road to Heathrow. Useful on a Sunday morning; less so at half past five.

Chauffeur service in Hammersmith — summary

Covering the W6 district and the streets either side of it, First Class Chauffeurs works the last mile of a first-class itinerary rather than the middle of it. Most bookings from Hammersmith are one of three things: a car to Heathrow, an indicative 25-45 minutes and about 11 miles on Fulham Palace Road (A219); a meet at the arrivals barrier on the way home; or a chauffeur held for a day that runs between Riverside Studios and Furnival Gardens. Luggage is loaded at the Hammersmith kerb, waiting time is built into the transfer, and nothing is metered. Nothing is published as a price list, and your written Hammersmith quotation fixes the price.

01Opening on Hammersmith

Chauffeur service in Hammersmith

Most Hammersmith journeys begin within a few hundred metres of the flyover, which is why the pick-up address matters more here than almost anywhere in west London. A car heading for Heathrow wants the westbound A4; a car heading for the City wants the opposite carriageway. Getting on the wrong side of the gyratory costs ten minutes before you have moved.

We cover the whole of W6, including the streets behind Ravenscourt Park, the Fulham Palace Road side near Charing Cross Hospital, and the flats on the river below the bridge. Hammersmith Bridge has been shut to motor traffic since 2019, so anything crossing to Barnes goes by Chiswick or Putney instead.

03The area

Turnings, one-ways and Fulham Palace Road (A219)

The parts of Hammersmith that decide a pick-up, listed without flattery.

Four big roads meet at Hammersmith and none of them behave. The flyover carries the A4 over the top; underneath, the gyratory feeds King Street, Fulham Palace Road, Shepherd’s Bush Road and Talgarth Road round a one-way loop that only works in one direction. King Street itself is bus-heavy and slow through the middle of the day. The residential grid either side of it, Brook Green to the east and Ravenscourt Park to the west, is calmer, though parking is tight and several roads are closed at one end.

04Demand

Who books a chauffeur in Hammersmith

Business, family and the occasional long night out of Hammersmith.

Bookings here split three ways. Charing Cross Hospital sends steady daytime work, often people who cannot face a train after a procedure. The office buildings by the river and around the Broadway generate early airport runs, usually Heathrow before eight. And the Eventim Apollo puts a line of cars on Queen Caroline Street on a show night, most of them arranged weeks ahead by people with no intention of queueing for the Piccadilly line at eleven.

05Road time

When Hammersmith moves and when it stops

How much spare time a Hammersmith booking is given, and why.

Westbound on the A4 the difficulty starts around 15:30 and does not really clear until seven. Eastbound it is worse in the morning, from about 07:15, with the flyover queueing back past the Hogarth Roundabout on a bad day. A 06:30 departure for Heathrow is comfortable; an 08:00 departure for the same flight is not. Weekends are mild through the gyratory except when there is football at Craven Cottage or Stamford Bridge, when Fulham Palace Road fills in both directions.

06The kerb

Loading, waiting and Fulham Palace Road (A219)

Where we hold the car when Fulham Palace Road (A219) will not take a stationary one.

Almost nothing around the Broadway is a legal stop. The bus station is off limits, Talgarth Road and the flyover approaches are red route, and Fulham Palace Road has double reds outside the hospital entrance. What works instead: the side streets off King Street, Queen Caroline Street for the Apollo, and the loading bays on Glenthorne Road outside restricted hours. For riverside flats the chauffeur parks in a nearby residential street and walks to the door rather than sit on a red line.

Collection notes for Hammersmith

  • 01For Broadway addresses we set down and collect on Queen Caroline Street or Beadon Road, never on the bus station approach.
  • 02Charing Cross Hospital collections are from the Fulham Palace Road main entrance; the car waits in the hospital car park and the chauffeur walks in, because the frontage is double red.
  • 03Apollo shows empty onto a closed road, so we agree a holding point on Hammersmith Bridge Road before the doors open.
  • 04Riverside addresses west of the bridge have no through road; we name a cross street and the chauffeur walks down to meet you.

What the Hammersmith to Heathrow figure covers

  • 01

    What the Hammersmith price includes

Nothing is metered on the way to Heathrow. The run from Hammersmith costs what the quotation says it costs, whether the traffic on Fulham Palace Road (A219) is kind that morning or not.

  • 02

    The Heathrow handover

A board with your name on it, held by the chauffeur who will drive you to Hammersmith. If the flight into Heathrow is two hours late the board is still there two hours later, because the chauffeur left Hammersmith on the aircraft rather than on the schedule.

  • 03

Ravenscourt Park arrivals tracked as well

We reschedule the Heathrow pick-up ourselves when the aircraft slips, and the car simply leaves Hammersmith later. What you agreed in writing before you left Hammersmith is what you pay when you get back to it.

  • 04

Hand luggage, or eight cases from Hammersmith

Golf bags out of Hammersmith are the classic miscount. Four sets of clubs and four passengers out of Hammersmith does not go in a saloon, and it is a cheap thing to establish in advance.

  • 05

Knows which end of Fulham Palace Road (A219) to avoid

You get the same person for the whole journey out of Hammersmith, in a suit, who opens the door, loads the boot and says very little unless you start the conversation.

  • 06

    Waiting at Heathrow from touchdown

The chauffeur waits wherever Hammersmith allows it, which is not always within sight of the door. You get one message naming the spot in Hammersmith, and the car is at the kerb by the time you reach it.

The part of a Hammersmith trip nobody plans

The ten minutes before you leave Hammersmith

LF-01The ten minutes before you leave Hammersmith

The ten minutes before you leave Hammersmith

The chauffeur reaches Hammersmith with a margin, parks, and then does nothing at all. That waiting on a Hammersmith street is deliberate. It is what turns a time printed on a confirmation into a car genuinely standing in Hammersmith when the door opens.

What you should notice about a collection in Hammersmith is that there is nothing to notice. The bags are handled, the route out of Hammersmith is settled, and the only decision you make is whether you want to talk.

  • The stopping point on Fulham Palace Road (A219) agreed before the morning rather than during it
  • No meter and no waiting charge on a residential collection in Hammersmith
  • Route out of Hammersmith chosen for the hour rather than for the map
  • Gated entrances and courtyards in Hammersmith checked in advance
Ravenscourt Park to your door in Hammersmith

LF-02Ravenscourt Park to your door in Hammersmith

Ravenscourt Park to your door in Hammersmith

Plenty of journeys into Hammersmith are best done by rail for the long middle and by car for the ends. We collect from Ravenscourt Park and Barons Court, on the side of the station where a car can actually stop rather than the entrance the signs point at.

Where Ravenscourt Park has more than one entrance, the booking names which. In Hammersmith that single detail saves more time than any route decision the chauffeur makes afterwards.

The welcome at Heathrow

LF-03The welcome at Heathrow

The welcome at Heathrow

Landing at Heathrow after a long flight, with Hammersmith still to come, is the point at which most ground arrangements fall over. A Hammersmith return is built for it. The chauffeur is inside arrivals, the car is close, and the drive back into Hammersmith starts within a few minutes of you clearing customs.

Once the cases are in, the return into Hammersmith is deliberately dull. If you want to sleep between Heathrow and Hammersmith, sleep. If you want the fastest way to Lyric Hammersmith rather than the shortest, say so and it happens.

  • Bags taken from the Heathrow trolley to the boot and on to Hammersmith
  • A diversion away from Heathrow requoted for Hammersmith in writing, not argued about
  • Late landings still end with the cases at your door in Hammersmith
  • Return route into Hammersmith chosen at the airport exit rather than in advance

A pre-dawn departure out of Hammersmith is easier to plan than a nine o'clock one. Fulham Palace Road (A219) is empty, the drive sits close to its lower bound, and the only variable left is how long you take to reach the car.

Return legs into Hammersmith get booked at the same time as often as not. The same chauffeur meets the inbound flight at Heathrow and drives you back to the same door in Hammersmith.

Some Hammersmith days do not fit a transfer. Three appointments between Lyric Hammersmith and Riverside Studios, a lunch that overruns, a change of plan at four: booking the car by the hour costs less thought than booking four separate journeys and hoping they line up.

Long Hammersmith days are quoted with the chauffeur's own hours in mind, and where a day runs from dawn to midnight we will say plainly whether that is one chauffeur or two.

Sizing the vehicle for a Hammersmith booking

Sizing the vehicle for a Hammersmith booking

We would rather send the right car to Hammersmith than the most expensive one. If your run from Hammersmith is two people and a weekend bag, the E-Class does it properly and the difference stays in your pocket.

If you are undecided, describe the journey: passengers, cases, where it starts in Hammersmith and where it ends. We will recommend a class for Hammersmith, and the recommendation is usually cheaper than the one people expect.

We would rather have too much detail about the Hammersmith collection than too little. If the collection in Hammersmith is awkward — a gated entrance, a narrow turning off Fulham Palace Road (A219), a building with two doors — say so, and the chauffeur is briefed before the day.

Once the Hammersmith booking is confirmed you get the chauffeur's name, the vehicle and the registration before the day. On the morning itself you get one message when the car is in position on Fulham Palace Road (A219) or wherever it can legally stand.

17Answers

Hammersmith chauffeur questions

What people ask before booking a car in Hammersmith, and the honest answers.

Can a chauffeur drive across Hammersmith Bridge to Barnes?

No. Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to motor vehicles since April 2019 and only pedestrians and cyclists cross it. A car going from W6 to Barnes uses Chiswick Bridge or Putney Bridge, which adds roughly ten to twenty minutes depending on the hour.

How early should the car leave Hammersmith for a 10am flight from Heathrow Terminal 5?

For a 10:00 long-haul departure we would normally be outside your door between 06:15 and 06:45. That allows for the westbound A4 tightening after seven, the run down the M4 spur, and enough time at T5 to check bags without hurrying.

Where does the car wait for a show at the Eventim Apollo?

Queen Caroline Street is closed or heavily controlled around the end of a performance, so we set a meeting point before you go in, usually on Hammersmith Bridge Road or Fulham Palace Road, and the chauffeur holds there rather than joining the crush at the doors.

Do you cover Brook Green and Barons Court as well as the Broadway?

Yes. Anything in W6 and the W14 streets around Barons Court and Queen’s Club is normal coverage. Those streets are permit-controlled, so the chauffeur will either stand where a short wait is allowed or come to the door on a call from you.
