Chauffeur service in Epping — summary

Collections from Epping Sports Centre and North Weald Airfield make up a good share of the Epping diary, alongside private addresses and the odd early start from Epping. The pattern is consistent: out of Epping to Stansted on an indicative 25-45 minutes covering about 20 miles, back from it met at the barrier, and hourly hire that keeps your coat and your papers in the cabin while you are inside. Chauffeurs know A121, M11 and M25 well enough to choose between them on the morning rather than on the map. The fleet runs from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and all of it is driven in Epping. Nothing is published as a price list; the figure is confirmed in writing for your Epping journey.

01Epping, the short version

Chauffeur service in Epping

Epping's geography is unusually kind to a car. The M11 and the M25 meet just south of the town, and the M25 itself dips into the Bell Common tunnel beneath the forest rather than cutting across it. From the High Street you can be on a motorway in four or five minutes, which very few towns in Essex can claim.

The town is also where the Underground stops, so a large part of the work here is short: home to the station, station to a dinner, station to a wedding. The rest is airport work, and with Stansted twenty minutes up the M11 it is some of the easiest in the region to schedule.

03The area

Epping from behind the windscreen

Why the last two hundred yards in Epping take longer than the two miles before them.

A wide High Street with parking down both sides, a church at the top and the forest closing in at the bottom. Traffic funnels through the middle because the B1393 is the only proper north-south route. Beyond the town, the roads into Epping Forest are narrow, unlit and full of deer and cyclists at the weekend, which is a reason to allow time rather than a reason to avoid them.

04Demand

The shape of demand in Epping

Early flights, late returns and the days in between, out of Epping.

Plenty of London commuters here use the Central line for work and a car for anything with luggage. Weddings and functions at the hotels along the forest edge. Golf traffic, restaurant runs into town, and a steady flow of families out to Stansted at dawn. There is also a fair amount of work meeting people off the tube who then need to reach somewhere the forest lanes make awkward.

05Road time

Traffic, timing and A121

Morning, evening and the quiet middle, as A121 sees them.

Monday is market day and the High Street loses its central parking, which slows everything from mid-morning. The station car park is full by 07:15 on weekdays. Southbound, the M11 queues at junction 6 for the M25, and the tunnel approach can be slow when there is an incident inside it. For a Stansted flight, half an hour is honest; for Heathrow allow an hour and a quarter and more before nine.

06The kerb

Doors, boots and the Epping pavement

Handover notes for Epping, written by people who have stood there.

The station has a small forecourt and a set-down that works outside the peak; at commuter hours we meet on Station Road instead. On the High Street the bays are short-stay and enforced, and on market day much of the middle is unavailable. Most residential addresses towards the forest have drives. For anything on the forest lanes, we ask for a house name because the numbering is patchy and there is no lighting.

Collection notes for Epping

  • 01Monday market takes out the High Street's central parking, so we collect from Hemnall Street or Station Road that day.
  • 02The station forecourt works outside the peak; from seven to nine we meet on Station Road and walk you across.
  • 03Forest lane addresses need a house name, since numbering is inconsistent and there is no street lighting.
  • 04Southbound timings should assume a queue at M11 junction 6 rather than a clear run into the tunnel.

07Included as standard

Not extras: what a Epping car comes with

  • 01

Knows which end of A121 to avoid

The knowledge that earns its keep in Epping is not the fastest route. It is which kerb tolerates a stationary car at half past seven, where the permit bays stop, and which entrance at Epping Sports Centre is used for loading.

  • 02

    Four cases out of Epping

The return leg into Epping follows the same rule in reverse. Whatever left Epping plus whatever was bought has to fit, so if the way home is heavier than the way out, put it on the booking.

  • 03

Tracked from the tail number into Stansted

The point of tracking is that the chauffeur's start time in Epping is ours to move and not yours. You do not message us from the aisle, and no Epping booking is charged for the hour the airline lost before it ever reached Stansted.

  • 04

The welcome on the Stansted concourse

A meet is a person inside Stansted, holding a board with your name on it and a car pointed at Epping. Not a pin on a map and not a call from the roadside on A121. The distinction sounds small until you are the one at Stansted with three cases, a dead phone and a Epping address to reach.

  • 05

Where the car waits near Epping Ongar Railway

Short stops on the way out of Epping are worth mentioning when you enquire: a pharmacy, a school gate, ten minutes at Theydon Bois to collect something. They cost nothing to plan into a Epping booking and time to improvise.

  • 06

    What the Epping price includes

Nothing about the Epping price should be a surprise afterwards. The quotation is the reference point: time, address in Epping, vehicle, figure. If any of those changes, a new Epping quotation is sent.

From a Epping address to the open road

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Epping and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere A121 will tolerate. In Epping the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

The whole collection should take about ninety seconds from the door in Epping to a moving car. That is the figure a Epping pick-up is built around, and everything above exists to protect it.

  • Cases carried from the door in Epping rather than watched
  • Chauffeur briefed on the Epping address before the car sets off
  • Water, a charger and a cabin set for whatever Epping is doing that morning
  • A written price agreed before the car is allocated to Epping
Departure day in Epping

For a private flight the clock runs on the Stansted handling agent's slot rather than on a check-in cut-off, which changes the Epping collection time. That usually compresses the Epping timings, and it means the car finishes airside instead of at a terminal door.

If the flight is cancelled while you are still on A121, tell the chauffeur. The car turns round, goes back to Epping, and the rebooking is handled in writing rather than at a kerb.

Being met when you land at Stansted

Being met when you land at Stansted

A proper meet at Stansted begins while you are still in the air and the car is still in Epping. We watch the aircraft, adjust for the actual landing time rather than the printed one, and the chauffeur leaves Epping in time to be inside the Stansted hall with a name board when the doors open.

The car leaves Stansted by whichever exit is moving, which is not always the one the signs suggest, and comes into Epping on M11. You will be at your Epping door within the time the confirmation gave you.

  • Board held at Stansted until you are standing in front of it, Epping bound
  • Groups gathered at one point inside Stansted, one chauffeur per car into Epping
  • A quiet cabin for the 20 miles back into Epping
  • Aircraft tracked into Stansted from the tail number, so Epping is reached on time

The advantage is not the car; it is not having to think about the car while you are crossing Epping. Your bag stays in the boot, your coat stays on the seat, and the chauffeur is outside Epping Sports Centre when you come back out of it.

Long Epping days are quoted with the chauffeur's own hours in mind, and where a day runs from dawn to midnight we will say plainly whether that is one chauffeur or two.

Most Epping bookings are an E-Class or an S-Class, because most bookings are one or two people with hand luggage and a flight to catch. The choice starts mattering when the passenger count out of Epping rises, or the cases do.

Child seats, extra luggage, skis and golf bags all change the answer for a Epping booking. Tell us what is going in the boot when you enquire from Epping and we will name the class that takes it rather than the one that nearly does.

Where a service into Epping is replaced by a bus for part of the route, say so. The car can meet you at whichever station the train genuinely terminates at, rather than at Epping because the ticket said so.

For a journey into Epping where rail covers the distance and the car covers the ends, book both legs at once. The quotation then names the collection at Epping and the run into Epping as a single price.

For a run out of the CM16 district to Stansted, add the flight number. It gives us the terminal at Stansted, the landing time, and whether the collection in Epping needs to be earlier than the arithmetic alone suggests.

The quotation states what the Epping figure covers, including the waiting at Stansted and the meet, and any applicable tax. Nothing on this page carries a figure; the quotation is where the Epping price is stated.

17Answers

Epping chauffeur questions

Timing, kerbs and price, as they apply in Epping.

How quickly can a car reach the M25 from Epping?

Four or five minutes in ordinary traffic, using the B1393 south to junction 27. The motorway runs through the Bell Common tunnel under the forest just there, which is worth knowing because a closure inside the tunnel backs traffic up onto the local roads and there is no quick way around it.

Do you collect from Epping station?

Yes, and it is one of our commonest jobs here. Outside the peak the forecourt set-down is fine. Between seven and nine in the morning it is full of commuters being dropped off, so we wait on Station Road and meet you at the top of the ramp, which is quicker than trying to get a car into the queue.

Can you drive us through Epping Forest for a day out?

We can, and it is a pleasant run down through High Beach towards Chingford. The lanes are narrow, unlit and busy with cyclists and horses at the weekend, and deer cross without warning at dusk, so the pace is unhurried by necessity. It is a drive to enjoy rather than a short cut.

What happens on Epping market day?

The Monday market occupies the centre of the High Street and removes the parking there, so the road narrows and the traffic slows from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. We collect from Hemnall Street or the station end instead, and if you have a flight that day we build in an extra ten minutes to get clear of the town.
