Chauffeur service in Datchet — summary

A chauffeur service for Datchet, working the part of a journey either side of the flight. Cars collect from addresses across Datchet in SL3, from Datchet Village Hall, Ditton Park and The Royal Stag, and from Datchet when a train is the first leg. The drive to Heathrow is an indicative 12-30 minutes over about 5 miles, and The Green is the route that usually decides how long it takes. Arrivals at Heathrow are met inside the terminal at the barrier, then driven into Datchet. The fleet runs from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and the Datchet price is confirmed in writing before you travel.

01Datchet at a glance

Chauffeur service in Datchet

The village works around the Green, and almost every route in or out uses the B470. Trains to Windsor cross the road on the level beside the station, and when the barriers drop the queue reaches back past the shops within a minute. Five miles to Terminal 5 is nothing; the first four hundred yards are the variable.

Most journeys from here are airport journeys. Residents on the roads towards Horton and Wraysbury fly often enough to book weeks ahead, and the houses backing onto Home Park generate early departures where the point of the exercise is not standing on a pavement in the dark. Ditton Park adds a steady stream of business collections.

03The area

Where Datchet is wide, and where it is not

A working description of Datchet, not a tourist one.

Small, flat and bounded by water on two sides, Datchet gives a driver very few choices. The Green is the pivot; from it the roads run to Windsor, to Horton and to Slough, and that is more or less the whole network. Parked cars narrow the residential streets, and the riverside lanes towards Old Windsor are single width with passing places. In flood conditions the low roads near the river close first.

04Demand

The bookings Datchet actually makes

Who needs a car in Datchet, and at what hour.

Airport work, and a great deal of it. The village is full of people who commute by air rather than by rail, and the pattern is early out, late back. Ditton Park and the offices on the Slough side add weekday business runs. There is also steady traffic into Windsor for hotel and restaurant evenings, where the appeal is not having to find a space on a Saturday night.

05Road time

What the traffic does in Datchet, and when

When The Green works, when it does not, and how far ahead we build in.

Barrier downtime at the crossing is the local unit of delay, and at peak the Windsor branch runs frequently enough that two or three closures in a row are ordinary. Add the school run on the B470 and the Slough Road approach between eight and nine. We build ten extra minutes into any weekday morning collection, and rather more if the M4 at Junction 5 is already showing red.

06The kerb

Where the car holds around Sunnymeads

One message, naming the exact spot on The Green. That is the whole of the Datchet system.

Residential kerbs in Datchet are generally usable, which simplifies things. The Green has short-stay bays that work for a set-down, and the station forecourt is small and better avoided at commuting times. For riverside addresses we ask about the driveway, since several are shared and turning a long saloon in one is not always possible. Where it is not, the chauffeur waits on the lane and walks in.

Collection notes for Datchet

  • 01We add time for the level crossing on any collection that has to pass the station, and more at peak when the Windsor trains run back to back.
  • 02The Green has short bays suitable for a set-down; we avoid the station forecourt at commuting times.
  • 03Shared driveways on the riverside lanes are tight for a long saloon, so tell us if turning space is limited.
  • 04Because the run itself is under fifteen minutes, we confirm the collection time the evening before rather than leaving it to the morning.

What comes with a car in the SL3 district

  • 01

    The meet inside Heathrow

We watch the flight from the tail number, so the chauffeur is standing in Heathrow arrivals when you clear customs rather than circling on the way in from Datchet. Waiting time from touchdown is built into the Datchet transfer.

  • 02

Nothing lifted on the Datchet pavement

The chauffeur lifts and loads at the Datchet kerb. In the rain on The Green with a laptop bag under one arm, that is worth more than most of the things chauffeur companies get compared on.

  • 03

The driver, not just a car, in Datchet

Every chauffeur working Datchet is licensed for private hire and drives one of our own vehicles. Beyond that, what matters here is that they know Datchet: the turnings, the loading bays and the two minutes it takes to walk from Home Park.

  • 04

    The written quotation for Datchet

Tell us the shape of a job around Datchet Green and the figure comes back before you commit to anything. The written quotation for a Datchet booking confirms the final figure and what sits inside it.

  • 05

Your Datchet booking, unaffected by the airline

A delay at Heathrow is our problem to solve. We move the chauffeur's start time in Datchet, hold the car, and the price on your written quotation does not move because the airline's did.

  • 06

    An extra address in Eton

Where the day has no fixed shape, book the car from the first address in Datchet and release it when you have finished. Everything between that and Datchet Green can be decided as it happens.

Flights out of Heathrow and back into Datchet

The figures are the ones we plan our own cars around in Datchet. They are not padded to look impressive, and not trimmed to make Heathrow look closer to Datchet than it is. On a wet Monday out of Datchet, the higher end of each range is the honest one.

How a Datchet journey actually runs

The outbound run to Heathrow

LF-01The outbound run to Heathrow

The outbound run to Heathrow

Before a flight the useful question is not how long the drive out of Datchet takes but when you need to be at the Heathrow desk. From Datchet we count 12-30 minutes of road, then the walk from the drop-off, then the queue, and set the pick-up early enough that none of it is close.

Where the flight is private, the drive from Datchet ends airside at the Heathrow FBO rather than at a terminal door, and the timings compress accordingly. Say so when you enquire from Datchet and the quotation is built round the handling agent's slot instead of a check-in desk.

Off the aircraft at Heathrow and into the car

LF-02Off the aircraft at Heathrow and into the car

Off the aircraft at Heathrow and into the car

Private arrivals into Heathrow compress all of this before The Green. At Heathrow the car meets you at the handling agent, the bags go from the aircraft to the boot, and the drive into Datchet starts within a couple of minutes.

Out of the terminal, onto The Green, into Datchet. The chauffeur takes the Heathrow exit that is moving rather than the one the signs prefer, which after eleven at night is usually The Green and at six in the evening is not.

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Datchet and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere The Green will tolerate. In Datchet the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

What you should notice about a collection in Datchet is that there is nothing to notice. The bags are handled, the route out of Datchet is settled, and the only decision you make is whether you want to talk.

  • A second collection in Windsor priced into the same booking
  • Engine off and boot open before you reach the car in Datchet
  • Indicative 12-30 minutes from Datchet to Heathrow, given once and then left alone
  • Pick-ups at Datchet made on the side that tolerates a stationary car

Suite and Signature classes are for arrivals that are themselves part of the event: a wedding at Datchet Village Hall, a milestone dinner, a photograph that outlives the day. For a five o'clock run out of Datchet to Heathrow they are unnecessary.

If you are undecided, describe the journey: passengers, cases, where it starts in Datchet and where it ends. We will recommend a class for Datchet, and the recommendation is usually cheaper than the one people expect.

Days built round Datchet tend to sprawl. Hourly hire absorbs that: the chauffeur waits near Datchet Green, the boot holds whatever you are carrying, and you stop planning the transport between the things you are actually doing.

The chauffeur will ask for a mobile number and then use it about once per stop, which is the right amount of communication for a day spent moving around Datchet.

Some journeys into Datchet genuinely are best done by rail for the long middle. What they still need is somebody at the end of the Datchet platform, and that is the part no timetable covers.

For a journey into Datchet where rail covers the distance and the car covers the ends, book both legs at once. The quotation then names the collection at Datchet and the run into Datchet as a single price.

Booking from Datchet is deliberately short. Date, time, Datchet address, destination, passengers, luggage. If it is a run to Heathrow, add the flight. We do the rest and send the Datchet price back in writing.

The confirmation names the chauffeur, the vehicle and the registration before the Datchet collection. On the morning itself you get one message, when the car is standing wherever The Green allows it to stand.

17Answers

Datchet chauffeur questions

Specific to Datchet: the kerb, the timing and the price.

How close is Datchet to Heathrow?

Around five miles to Terminal 5 and a little more to the central terminals, which is twelve to thirty minutes in practice. The level crossing at the station and the M4 Junction 5 approach are the only two things that push it towards the top of that range.

Does the Datchet level crossing really affect pickup times?

It does, and it is the single most common reason a car is held up in the village. The Windsor branch runs often at peak and two closures in succession are ordinary. Where we can, we plan the route so the car approaches from the same side of the crossing as your address.

Can you collect from houses on the Old Windsor side of the river?

Yes. The lanes there are narrow with passing places and some driveways are shared, so we ask about turning space when the booking is made. If a car cannot get in cleanly the chauffeur parks on the lane and comes to the door on foot.

Is Datchet covered for late-night arrivals into Terminal 4?

It is. We track the flight and the chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall rather than waiting in a car park, so a delayed inbound does not turn into a phone call at midnight. The run home takes about twenty minutes at that hour.
