Chauffeur coverage across the London Borough of Camden, Holborn to Hampstead

Camden the borough is not Camden Town the neighbourhood. It runs from the edge of the Strand to the top of Hampstead Heath, and the two ends are five miles apart.

Chauffeur service in Camden — summary

A chauffeur service for Camden, working the part of a journey either side of the flight. Cars collect from addresses across Camden in WC1, WC2, NW1, NW3, NW5, NW6, N6 and N19, from Coal Drops Yard, University College Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital, and from Hampstead when a train is the first leg. The drive to London City is an indicative 30-60 minutes over about 10 miles, and Finchley Road (A41) is the route that usually decides how long it takes. Arrivals at London City are met inside the terminal at the barrier, then driven into Camden. The fleet runs from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and the Camden price is confirmed in writing before you travel.

01Camden in brief

Chauffeur service in Camden

This needs saying plainly, because it causes genuine confusion: the London Borough of Camden includes Holborn, Bloomsbury, King’s Cross, Euston, Somers Town, Fitzrovia east of Great Portland Street, Camden Town, Kentish Town, Gospel Oak, Belsize Park, Swiss Cottage, West Hampstead, Hampstead, Dartmouth Park and Primrose Hill. Camden Town is one high street inside all that.

The borough is long and narrow, running roughly south-east to north-west, and it contains two mainline termini, four major hospitals, the British Library, the British Museum and University College London. Almost nowhere in Britain generates more ground journeys per square mile, and almost nowhere is harder to park a car in.

03The area

The ground plan of Camden

Written from the driver's side of the windscreen, about Camden rather than about the guidebook.

The southern half is central London: Euston Road across the middle as an unbroken red route, Kingsway and Southampton Row running north from the Strand, and squares that are one-way and permit-controlled throughout. The middle belt around Camden Town and Kentish Town is Victorian high street and terrace. The northern end, above Belsize Park, becomes steep, narrow and eighteenth century, with lanes that will not take a long wheelbase. One borough, three entirely different driving problems.

04Demand

What gets asked for around Senate House

Why the ground half of a Camden trip is the part people call about.

Rail connections first: Euston, King’s Cross and St Pancras between them produce a constant flow of clients wanting a car at one end of a train journey. Then the hospitals, University College Hospital, Great Ormond Street, the Royal Free and the National Hospital at Queen Square, which generate appointment and discharge work at all hours. Then the universities, the museums, the venues, and the residential airport trade in the north.

05Road time

The Camden clock

Road time in Camden, stated plainly rather than optimistically.

Euston Road is the borough’s bottleneck and is congested from seven in the morning until seven at night, worse westbound in the evening. Camden Town is a weekend problem rather than a weekday one, because of the market. The northern residential half moves reasonably at most hours. Anything crossing the borough from south-east to north-west should expect the middle third to be the slow part.

06The kerb

The stopping point, and how Camden decides it

Why a Camden pick-up is described by kerb rather than by postcode.

Almost the entire borough is a controlled parking zone, and the southern half is red route and bus lane on every main road. Practical waiting happens on residential side streets, hotel forecourts and hospital set-downs, and we identify which before the job. The northern lanes above Hampstead High Street will not take a large vehicle at all. Camden Town and King’s Cross both need an agreed meeting point rather than a kerbside guess.

Collection notes for Camden

  • 01Camden the borough is five miles long. Tell us the neighbourhood, not just the council area, or the chauffeur will be at the wrong end of it.
  • 02Euston Road is a red route with no stopping at any point. Collections near it happen on the streets behind or at a hotel forecourt.
  • 03For St Pancras and Euston we use the designated set-down and the chauffeur meets you inside rather than phoning from a car park.
  • 04North of Belsize Park, several lanes will not take a long wheelbase. We check the street before assigning the vehicle.

07Included as standard

Inside the price of a Camden booking

  • 01

What goes in the boot before Finchley Road (A41)

Where the collection is at Great Ormond Street Hospital rather than a private address, the chauffeur takes the cases from the porter or the front desk, and they are in the boot before the goodbyes are finished.

  • 02

The aircraft, not the timetable, into London City

A diversion away from London City is the awkward case for a Camden booking. If the flight comes down somewhere other than London City, tell us where and the car leaves Camden for that airport instead, requoted in writing rather than argued about over the phone.

  • 03

London City to Camden, door to door

Where the flight into London City lands early, the car has already left Camden and is waiting. Where it lands two hours late, the London City board is still up and the Camden run is unchanged. That costs us time and costs you nothing, because the waiting sits inside the Camden transfer rather than beside it.

  • 04

Finchley Road (A41) in the rain, already driven

They wear a suit, hold the door on Finchley Road (A41), load the boot and then leave you alone. Conversation is available and not compulsory, which at five in the morning on the way out of Camden is the setting most people want.

  • 05

    What a Camden booking costs

Where a journey has more than one leg, a stop in Camden Town on the way to London City, the whole thing is quoted as one figure rather than assembled from parts at the end.

  • 06

Waiting, drop-offs and stops in Camden

Plans change halfway out of Camden more often than anyone admits. The chauffeur drives where you ask in Camden, and anything that alters the price is requoted in writing rather than added quietly at the end.

08Terminals

Indicative drives from Camden to each terminal

Where an area is large the two ends of it can differ by twenty minutes, and Camden is no exception. These are worked from Camden itself. If your address sits in the WC1 district rather than the far edge, the figure shifts a little and the quotation says by how much.

Most of the work in a Camden collection happens before anyone appears. Where to stop in Camden, which way to face, how long the car can sit there, and what to do when a delivery van is already in the only space.

From the moment the car leaves Camden, the arrival time is ours to manage. If the arrival at London City moves you hear about it once, with a number attached, rather than in a series of updates sent to you in Camden.

  • Engine off and boot open before you reach the car in Camden
  • Indicative 30-60 minutes from Camden to London City, given once and then left alone
  • Pick-ups at Hampstead made on the side that tolerates a stationary car
  • Collections from Great Ormond Street Hospital arranged through the desk, not the forecourt

Days that start in Camden and end elsewhere

Hourly hire suits Camden days where the destination list is still provisional. Start at an address in Camden, aim at Senate House, and change it twice before lunch without anyone having to rebook anything.

If the Camden day overruns, it overruns. Additional time is charged at the published hourly rate and confirmed afterwards in writing, not applied as a penalty on a Camden roadside.

Groups leaving Camden together are usually calmer in two cars than in one large vehicle collecting from three addresses. We will say which of those we think is right when the Camden journey is quoted.

At London City the chauffeur pulls into the drop-off, takes the cases that were loaded in Camden out, and puts them on a trolley. If you are travelling with someone who is not, the car can go on afterwards to Camden Town or back into Camden as part of the same booking.

Coming home to Camden

Coming home to Camden

A meet is a person inside the London City building holding a board for Camden. That is the entire definition of a Camden meet, and it is why the chauffeur parks properly rather than holding on a forecourt at London City hoping to be waved through.

The last thirty seconds are the ones people remember: cases at the door in Camden, the car pulling away, nothing left to arrange. That is what the 10 miles along Finchley Road (A41) were for.

  • London City car park found and paid for before the Camden chauffeur walks in
  • Indicative 30-60 minutes back into Camden
  • Waiting from touchdown at London City built into the Camden transfer
  • Bags taken from the London City trolley to the boot and on to Camden

What we would send to Camden

Group travel out of Camden splits two ways. Two saloons out of Camden gives everyone a door and a share of the boot; one larger vehicle keeps the party together. Both get quoted for Camden so the choice is yours.

For an arrival that is itself part of the event — a wedding at The Royal Free Hospital, a milestone dinner, a photograph that will outlive the day — the Suite and Signature classes exist. For the run out of Camden to London City at half past five in the morning, they are not necessary and we will say so.

A car waiting at Kentish Town

Business travel in and out of Camden often runs rail for the distance and car for the ends. It is quicker than driving the whole way, and a good deal less trouble than parking in Camden at the end of it.

The drive from Hampstead into Camden is usually short. What makes it worth booking is that it happens without you queueing, negotiating, or explaining to anybody where in Camden you are standing.

Changes, cancellations and Camden

If the journey out of Camden is unusual, say so. A pre-dawn start from Camden, an address with no obvious entrance, an overnight wait: all of it is ordinary work, and all of it is easier to price honestly in advance.

Once the Camden booking is confirmed there is nothing left for you to arrange. The chauffeur has the Camden address, the route, the flight and the notes, and the next thing that happens is a car outside your door.

17Answers

Camden chauffeur questions

What people want to know before a car is booked from Camden.

Is Camden the borough the same as Camden Town?

No, and the difference is large. The borough runs from Holborn and the edge of the Strand up through King’s Cross, Camden Town and Kentish Town to Hampstead and the top of the Heath. Camden Town is a single neighbourhood within it, and has its own page on this site.

Which hospitals in Camden do you cover?

University College Hospital on Euston Road, Great Ormond Street, the National Hospital at Queen Square and the Royal Free in Hampstead, along with the smaller clinics around Harley Street’s eastern edge. Appointment work is usually booked hourly, because discharge times move and a fixed transfer cannot flex.

Can you meet a Eurostar arrival at St Pancras?

Yes. The chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals area with your name rather than telephoning from a car park, and the car uses the designated set-down. Send the service number and he tracks the actual arrival, which matters more on Eurostar than most people expect.

How different is the north of the borough from the south for driving?

Entirely different. The south is red routes, bus lanes and one-way squares with no waiting anywhere. The north is steep Georgian lanes where the question is whether a long car physically fits. A journey from Holborn to Hampstead crosses both problems and needs planning at each end.
