Chauffeur hire in Brighton, BN1 and BN2, seafront to Preston Park

Brighton is built on a slope with a pedestrian core at the bottom of it, so the practical question here is which street above the Lanes a car can actually stop in.

Written quotation, usually within the hour

Chauffeur service in Brighton — summary

Gatwick is an indicative 35-60 minutes from Brighton, about 28 miles by road, and that one figure explains most of the work on this page. Chauffeur service across Brighton and East Sussex: outbound transfers timed backwards from the check-in desk, arrivals met at the barrier, hourly hire that holds the car near Theatre Royal Brighton between appointments, and long-distance runs that leave before Western Road fills. Collections are agreed at a named kerb, because in Brighton the legal stopping point is not always the front door. The fleet runs from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class up to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, all of it driven into Brighton. No price list is published; the written Brighton quotation confirms the final price and any applicable tax.

01Brighton, to begin with

Chauffeur service in Brighton

The Lanes and the North Laine take no vehicles worth speaking of, and the streets that do are narrow, one-way and parked solid. The seafront road carries everything east to west and closes for events more often than visitors expect. Above the centre the roads climb steeply to Seven Dials and Preston Park, and the A23 north begins there.

Gatwick is twenty-eight miles up that road and accounts for a large share of the work, along with conference traffic at the Brighton Centre and the marina, hospital journeys to the Royal Sussex and a great many London runs. In summer the seafront is slow from mid-morning, which changes every timing on the list.

03The area

What Brighton is like to drive

The practical version of Brighton: turnings, one-ways and the places a car can actually stop.

Steep, dense and busy at almost every hour. The one-way system around the Old Steine is the pivot, and getting it wrong means a long loop. Parking is controlled everywhere central, and the residential streets in Hanover and Kemptown are narrow with cars on both sides. The A23 out of town is the only fast road, and the Preston Park stretch is slow in the morning.

04Demand

Who books a chauffeur in Brighton

Who needs a car in Brighton, and at what hour.

Conferences, events and airports, with a strong late-night element. The Brighton Centre and the hotels along the front produce business bookings; the marina and the stadium bring event work; and the Royal Sussex generates hospital journeys. Gatwick transfers run throughout the day, and much of the London work happens after the last useful train.

05Road time

When Brighton moves and when it stops

The difference between 35-60 minutes and the same drive out of Brighton at eight in the morning.

The seafront is the local barometer: on a sunny weekend it is slow from ten in the morning until evening, and event closures push everything onto Western Road and the Lewes Road. Weekday peaks are eight to nine and half past four to six. For a Gatwick flight we allow eighty minutes from BN1, and more on a summer Friday.

06The kerb

Where the car holds around Theatre Royal Brighton

Kerb space in Brighton is finite. Here is how a collection on Western Road works with that.

Central Brighton is a set-down city. The Lanes take no cars, the seafront has limited loading and the hotel forecourts are small. We use the streets off Western Road, the Old Steine side and the station approach on Trafalgar Street. Residential collections in Hanover and Kemptown are made from the nearest wider road. The Royal Sussex has a marked drop-off.

Collection notes for Brighton

  • 01Central collections are set-downs off Western Road, at the Old Steine or on Trafalgar Street by the station.
  • 02We check seafront event closures before the day, because they push everything onto Western Road.
  • 03In Hanover and Kemptown the car waits on the nearest wider road and the chauffeur walks down.
  • 04The Royal Sussex has a marked drop-off, and we agree the department before an appointment.

07Included as standard

Included as standard in Brighton, not as an upgrade

  • 01

Knows which end of Western Road to avoid

The knowledge that earns its keep in Brighton is not the fastest route. It is which kerb tolerates a stationary car at half past seven, where the permit bays stop, and which entrance at Brighton Centre is used for loading.

  • 02

    Four cases out of Brighton

The return leg into Brighton follows the same rule in reverse. Whatever left Brighton plus whatever was bought has to fit, so if the way home is heavier than the way out, put it on the booking.

  • 03

Tracked from the tail number into Gatwick

The point of tracking is that the chauffeur's start time in Brighton is ours to move and not yours. You do not message us from the aisle, and no Brighton booking is charged for the hour the airline lost before it ever reached Gatwick.

  • 04

The welcome on the Gatwick concourse

A meet is a person inside Gatwick, holding a board with your name on it and a car pointed at Brighton. Not a pin on a map and not a call from the roadside on Western Road. The distinction sounds small until you are the one at Gatwick with three cases, a dead phone and a Brighton address to reach.

  • 05

Where the car waits near Brighton Palace Pier

Short stops on the way out of Brighton are worth mentioning when you enquire: a pharmacy, a school gate, ten minutes at Theatre Royal Brighton to collect something. They cost nothing to plan into a Brighton booking and time to improvise.

  • 06

    What the Brighton price includes

Nothing about the Brighton price should be a surprise afterwards. The quotation is the reference point: time, address in Brighton, vehicle, figure. If any of those changes, a new Brighton quotation is sent.

08Terminals

Airport runs from Brighton

Every figure below is indicative and measured from a Brighton door to the terminal, which is the number that matters when you are deciding what time to be ready. It assumes Western Road is moving normally. On a bad morning it will not be, which is why the collection time on a Brighton confirmation is usually earlier than the arithmetic suggests.

Southampton

London City

Waiting from touchdown at London City is part of the Brighton transfer, not an extra line.

The same runs are quoted from Hove and Lewes, adjusted for the extra distance rather than reused unchanged.

The kerb outside your Brighton door

LF-01The kerb outside your Brighton door

The kerb outside your Brighton door

Ten minutes before the booked time the car is in position in Brighton and the chauffeur is out of it. Boot open, engine off, somewhere Western Road will tolerate. In Brighton the useful skill is knowing which kerb tolerates a stationary car at that hour, and that varies street by street.

The route out of Brighton is chosen for the hour rather than for the map. Sometimes that means the long way round past the Lanes, and the chauffeur takes it without announcing how clever it was.

  • Water, a charger and a cabin set for whatever Brighton is doing that morning
  • A written price agreed before the car is allocated to Brighton
  • Chauffeur, vehicle and registration on the Brighton confirmation before the day
  • Car in position ahead of the booked time, parked legally near Brighton Palace Pier

Plenty of journeys into Brighton are best done by rail for the long middle and by car for the ends. We collect from Moulsecoomb and Hove, on the side of the station where a car can actually stop rather than the entrance the signs point at.

Pick-ups at Moulsecoomb are quoted like any other journey, with the train number on the booking so the chauffeur can watch it. If you miss the train and take the next one into Moulsecoomb, tell us and the car simply waits.

Forty minutes before you touch down at Gatwick the car has left Brighton and is already off the road. What happens after that is a walk across Gatwick, a wait, a name board and an indicative 35-60 minutes to Brighton, none of it visible from your seat.

On the way back the chauffeur gives the indicative arrival in Brighton once and then leaves you alone with it. If the arrival into Brighton moves, you hear that once as well, with a number rather than an apology.

  • Private arrivals met airside at the Gatwick handling agent, then driven to Brighton
  • No telephone call from an Gatwick car park before the run to Brighton
  • Terminal checked against your flight number before you fly home to Brighton
  • The same chauffeur who drove you out of Brighton

Most missed flights out of Gatwick are lost somewhere in the BN1 district rather than in the air. Out of Brighton the ground problem is Western Road between about seven and half past nine, and the answer is leaving before it rather than driving harder through it.

Where the flight is private, the drive from Brighton ends airside at the Gatwick FBO rather than at a terminal door, and the timings compress accordingly. Say so when you enquire from Brighton and the quotation is built round the handling agent's slot instead of a check-in desk.

As-directed driving around Brighton Palace Pier

Some Brighton days do not fit a transfer. Three appointments between Brighton Palace Pier and the Lanes, a lunch that overruns, a change of plan at four: booking the car by the hour costs less thought than booking four separate journeys and hoping they line up.

Long Brighton days are quoted with the chauffeur's own hours in mind, and where a day runs from dawn to midnight we will say plainly whether that is one chauffeur or two.

We would rather send the right car to Brighton than the most expensive one. If your run from Brighton is two people and a weekend bag, the E-Class does it properly and the difference stays in your pocket.

Child seats, extra luggage, skis and golf bags all change the answer for a Brighton booking. Tell us what is going in the boot when you enquire from Brighton and we will name the class that takes it rather than the one that nearly does.

Booking from Brighton is deliberately short. Date, time, Brighton address, destination, passengers, luggage. If it is a run to Gatwick, add the flight. We do the rest and send the Brighton price back in writing.

Regular bookings out of Brighton run on the same written basis as one-off journeys. Each Brighton journey is priced before it happens rather than totted up somewhere and presented afterwards.

17Answers

Brighton chauffeur questions

Everything below applies to Brighton and to the addresses immediately around it.

Where can a chauffeur pick up in central Brighton?

Off Western Road, on the Old Steine side, or at the Trafalgar Street end of the station, depending on where you are. The Lanes and the North Laine take no vehicles and the seafront has very little loading space, so central collections are set-downs with the car held nearby.

How long is Brighton to Gatwick?

Twenty-eight miles up the A23 and the M23, so thirty-five minutes on a clear run and an hour on a summer Friday. The slow part is usually Preston Park and the Patcham stretch rather than the motorway. We set the collection against the slower figure.

Does the seafront closing for events affect a booking?

It does, and more often than people expect. Marathons, festivals and the classic runs all close the A259, which pushes traffic onto Western Road and the Lewes Road. We check the closures before the day and agree a collection point that will still be reachable.

Do you cover Kemptown, Hanover and Patcham?

All of them, plus Withdean, Moulsecoomb and the marina. BN1 and BN2 are standard ground for us. In Hanover and Kemptown the streets are narrow with parking on both sides, so we usually collect from the nearest wider road and walk the bags down.
