Can a wheelchair user travel by chauffeur?

Written quotation, usually within the hour

Can a wheelchair user travel by chauffeur?

Yes, where the passenger is able to transfer from the chair to a car seat. The chair folds into the boot and the chauffeur helps with the transfer as much or as little as you want. A passenger who must remain seated in their chair needs a specialist vehicle rather than a saloon.

01The short answer

Yes, where the passenger is able to transfer from the chair to a car seat. The chair folds into the boot and the chauffeur helps with the transfer as much or as little as you want. A passenger who must remain seated in their chair needs a specialist vehicle rather than a saloon.

That distinction is the honest one, and it is better established at the booking stage than at a doorstep. Almost everything else, step height, door choice, how much help is wanted, is a matter of arranging the journey properly rather than of what is possible.

What we need to know

QA-01What we need to know

What we need to know

Whether the passenger can transfer, what kind of chair it is and whether it folds, how much assistance is welcome, and anything about the pickup and drop-off that affects access. A kerb, a step, a gravel drive: all of it changes how the car is positioned.

Say also which side is easier. Many passengers can manage one side of a car considerably better than the other, and a chauffeur who knows that parks accordingly rather than making somebody walk round the vehicle.

  • Whether the passenger transfers to a seat, or must stay in the chair
  • Chair type, and whether it folds
  • How much assistance is wanted, and from whom
  • Access at both ends: kerbs, steps, gates, surfaces
  • The preferred side of the car for boarding

QA-02The vehicles that suit best

The vehicles that suit best

A Mercedes-Benz V-Class is usually the better choice than a saloon, because the step-in height is closer to standing and the sliding door gives a wide opening without a long swing into traffic. It also takes a folded chair without fighting the luggage.

A low saloon seat is the hardest thing to get out of, which is why an S-Class is not automatically the right answer despite being the more expensive car. The Range Rover sits higher again and suits some passengers well.

QA-03Airports and stations

Airports and stations

Airport assistance is booked with the airline and starts at the aircraft, working through to the arrivals hall. The chauffeur meets that handover point rather than a general meeting area, so nobody is waiting in two different places.

At a station, the car is positioned for the shortest possible route from the platform rather than at the most obvious set-down point. Tell us the platform if you know it, since the difference at a large terminus is several hundred metres.

QA-04Where a specialist vehicle is needed

Where a specialist vehicle is needed

If the passenger cannot transfer out of the chair, a wheelchair accessible vehicle with a ramp and restraints is required, and that is a specialist arrangement rather than something a chauffeur saloon can improvise. We will say so plainly rather than take a booking we cannot do well.

Where that is the case, tell us anyway. Part of the day may still work as a chauffeur booking, for example a companion travelling separately or luggage going ahead, and it is better to plan the whole movement than to solve half of it.

04Answers

Follow-up questions

The things people ask straight after this one.

Will the chauffeur help me in and out of the car?

As much as you want and no more. Some passengers want an arm, some want the door held and nothing else, and some want the chauffeur to stand back entirely. Saying which at the booking stage means nobody has to guess at the kerb.

Can a mobility scooter be carried?

A folding one, usually, in a V-Class or a larger vehicle. A rigid scooter is generally too heavy and too bulky for a chauffeur vehicle, and that is worth establishing when booking rather than on a pavement. Give the weight and folded dimensions.

Can the same chauffeur be booked for regular medical appointments?

Yes, and for repeated journeys it is the arrangement worth having. Familiarity does more for an anxious or unwell passenger than anything else, and the access details stay attached to the booking rather than being explained each fortnight.
