Henley Royal Regatta, and the single bridge everything crosses

Henley-on-Thames is a small market town with one bridge across the river. For six days a year it holds a great many more people than it was built for, and the bridge does not get any wider.

Henley Royal Regatta: chauffeur hire summary

Henley Royal Regatta is rowed on the Thames at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire over six days from late June into the first week of July. First Class Chauffeurs drives guests from London, Oxford, Reading and the Thames Valley, approaching from whichever side of the river suits the enclosure they are attending, setting down before the bridge and waiting outside the town. Henley’s road network is small and the single bridge is the constraint that governs the whole day. Enclosure dress codes are published by the regatta and should be checked before travelling. Rates on this page are guide figures.

01Overview

Getting to Henley Royal Regatta

The racing runs upstream from Temple Island to the finish near the town, along a stretch of the Thames with enclosures on the Berkshire bank. Guests arrive from London along the A4130 through Maidenhead or the M4, from Reading on the A4155, and from Oxford down the A4074 and A4130. All of those approaches converge on the same few streets.

What makes Henley particular is the combination of a village-sized road network and a determinedly civilised event. The car parks are fields. The walk from most of them crosses the bridge. And the enclosures have dress codes and conventions of their own, which affects what has to travel in the boot rather more than people expect.

03On the ground

Where the cars actually go at Henley Royal Regatta

The practical constraints, as they are on the day rather than as a map suggests.
  1. 01

Which bank you need decides the approach. The enclosures sit on the Berkshire side, and coming in from Maidenhead on the A4130 puts you there without crossing. Arriving from Oxford or Reading means the bridge, and the bridge is the slowest two hundred yards in the county that week.

  2. 02

Set-down happens short of the town on whichever side you need. It is a short walk, and it is a great deal shorter than the walk from a field car park on the wrong bank.

  3. 03

Regatta parking is in meadows beside the river, sold in advance and released at the organisers’ pace at the end of the day. A chauffeured car has no reason to be in one.

  4. 04

Racing runs from morning to early evening across the six days, and the crowd builds through the afternoon. Guests arriving before eleven have a materially easier journey than those arriving at one.

04The hours

A Henley Royal Regatta day, from the driver's side

What the chauffeur is doing while you are inside, and why the timings are set where they are.
Mid-morning
A collection that puts you into Henley before eleven. The town works reasonably well early and stops working around midday, particularly on the Friday and Saturday when the crowd is at its largest.
The drop
Short of the bridge on the correct bank, with a named collection point agreed before anyone gets out. Mobile signal in the town is unreliable when it is full, so a spot and a time beat a phone call every time.
The afternoon
The chauffeur waits outside the town, often towards Remenham or Hurley, and returns on call. Racing, lunch and a long afternoon in an enclosure typically runs to six or seven hours, and the car is fifteen minutes away throughout.
The evening
Henley empties slowly and pleasantly rather than all at once, but the bridge still meters everything. Guests leaving before six are away cleanly; after that, allow half an hour to clear the town whatever the distance.

The things that decide a Henley Royal Regatta day

One bridge, and what it does to a day

EV-01One bridge, and what it does to a day

One bridge, and what it does to a day

Henley Bridge is an eighteenth-century stone crossing carrying a single lane in each direction, and it is the only way across the river for several miles. During the regatta it carries the town’s ordinary traffic, the event traffic and a steady flow of people on foot.

Everything else about driving to Henley follows from that. We work out which bank you need before the day and approach from that side, which sounds simple and is the difference between a fifteen-minute arrival and a fifty-minute one.

Dress codes and what goes in the boot

EV-02Dress codes and what goes in the boot

Dress codes and what goes in the boot

The enclosures publish their own dress requirements, and they are taken seriously. That has a practical consequence for a car: guests arrive dressed for the enclosure and want somewhere to put the things they are not carrying into it, from a change of shoes to a jacket that becomes unbearable by two in the afternoon.

We would say plainly that we are not the authority on what the enclosures require, and the regatta publishes the current rules. What we can do is make sure that whatever you decide to bring and not bring has somewhere sensible to live for the day.

Coming from London, Oxford or the Thames Valley

EV-03Coming from London, Oxford or the Thames Valley

Coming from London, Oxford or the Thames Valley

From central London it is around forty miles on the M4 to junction 8 or 9 and then the A4130 through Maidenhead, which takes an hour when the road is clear and closer to two on a regatta Friday. From Oxford it is under an hour down the A4074, and from Reading twenty minutes on the A4155.

A good many guests stay in the Thames Valley for the week, in Marlow, Maidenhead, Sonning or Henley itself. Those journeys are short in distance and still need planning, because the last mile is the same last mile for everybody.

Planning around Henley Royal Regatta

The long lunch, and the long afternoon

EV-04The long lunch, and the long afternoon

The long lunch, and the long afternoon

Henley is not a fixture people attend for ninety minutes. Lunch in an enclosure or a marquee, an afternoon of racing and a drink afterwards runs to six or seven hours easily, and a good many parties stay considerably longer.

That makes hourly hire the natural arrangement. The alternative is a return transfer with a time set in the morning, which nobody keeps, and a series of phone calls in the afternoon that could have been avoided by booking the day.

Getting a party of eight to the same place

EV-05Getting a party of eight to the same place

Getting a party of eight to the same place

Corporate and family groups at Henley tend to be larger than at most events, and eight to twelve people is unremarkable. In a town this size, a single large vehicle is harder to place than two saloons, and the set-down options for a minibus are further out.

For a group that must arrive together, the V-Class is the largest vehicle we would recommend here. Beyond that, two or three cars in sequence get closer and leave faster, and the extra flexibility on departure times is usually welcome by six in the evening.

08What it costs

Pricing a day at Henley Royal Regatta

A fixture like this is priced by the hour rather than as two transfers, because the useful part of the arrangement is the car being available in between. A day usually runs from the collection to the last drop, and the figure covers the whole of it rather than each leg separately.

The figures on your quotation on this page are the same ones on the pricing page, and they are a starting point rather than a quotation. Distance from your collection point, the size of the party and how long the day runs all move the number, which is why we put it in writing before anybody travels.

09Worth knowing

Small things that change a Henley Royal Regatta day

Rain on a river bank

EV-06Rain on a river bank

Rain on a river bank

A wet regatta day is a particular kind of miserable, because most of the day is spent outdoors on grass with limited cover. Umbrellas, a spare pair of shoes and something warm for the evening all earn their place in the boot in a way they do not at an indoor fixture.

The other effect is on the walk. Meadow parking becomes slow and unpleasant in the wet, which is another argument for a set-down on tarmac and a car that waits somewhere with a made-up road under it.

EV-07Combining Henley with Ascot or a stay

Combining Henley with Ascot or a stay

The regatta falls within a fortnight of Royal Ascot, and a fair number of visitors do both in the same trip. They are twenty-five miles apart across the Thames Valley, which makes a combined stay in Windsor, Bray or Marlow entirely practical.

Where guests are here for several days, the same car and chauffeur across the run is worth arranging. By the third day the driver knows which approach is working, where the cones have moved and how long the bridge is taking, which is not knowledge that transfers from a briefing.

14Answers

Henley Royal Regatta: what we are asked

The five questions that come up on nearly every enquiry for this fixture.

How long is the drive from London to Henley during the regatta?

An hour without traffic for around forty miles, and between ninety minutes and two hours on the busier days. The M4 and A4130 run normally; the delay is concentrated in the last two miles and at the bridge. Arriving before eleven avoids most of it.

Which side of the river should we be dropped on?

The side your enclosure is on, and it matters a great deal. Crossing Henley Bridge on foot is easy; crossing it in a car during the regatta is not. Tell us which enclosure you are attending when you book and we plan the approach so you do not need to cross at all.

Does the chauffeur wait in the regatta car parks?

No. The meadow car parks are released at the organisers’ pace, which means a car parked there leaves when they say rather than when you do. The vehicle waits outside the town on a made-up road and comes back to an agreed point, usually within fifteen minutes of a call.

What are the dress requirements in the enclosures?

The regatta publishes them and they are the authority, not us. What we would say is that they are observed properly, and that a chauffeured party should plan for a spare pair of shoes and a jacket in the boot rather than assuming everything can be carried. Check the current rules before you travel.

Can you cover several days of the regatta with the same driver?

Yes, and for a multi-day booking it is the arrangement we prefer. The Henley road pattern changes as the week goes on and the crowd grows, and a driver who has done the Wednesday knows something useful about the Saturday. Multi-day bookings are quoted as a block rather than day by day.
