EVFive days in late May

The Chelsea Flower Show, and the streets around the Royal Hospital

The show sits in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, in the middle of Chelsea, where the roads are red routes and the parking is residents only. It is the most central event we drive to and one of the hardest to stop near.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show: chauffeur hire summary

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is held over five days in late May in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea on Royal Hospital Road in SW3. First Class Chauffeurs collects across London and the home counties and sets down close to the gates on whichever street is workable that day, since the roads immediately around the site are red routes with residents parking behind them. Cars wait outside the area and return on call. On the final afternoon plants bought at the show need real boot space. Quoted per journey and are confirmed in a written quotation.

01Overview

Getting to The RHS Chelsea Flower Show

For five days in late May the Royal Hospital grounds hold a very large temporary town, and the streets around it absorb the consequences. Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea Embankment and Chelsea Bridge Road all carry restrictions in ordinary weeks and rather more during the show, and the gates funnel a great many people into a small number of points.

The advantage, against every other event on this site, is that it is in central London. There is no motorway, no field and no forty-mile drive. The whole problem is the last three hundred yards, which turns out to be a bigger problem than it sounds.

Where the cars actually go at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show

The practical constraints, as they are on the day rather than as a map suggests.
  1. 01

Royal Hospital Road and Chelsea Embankment are red routes with no stopping through most of the day, and the residential streets behind them are permit-controlled. The workable set-down points change between days depending on where the barriers go.

  2. 02

The main gates sit on Chelsea Bridge Road and the Embankment side, and which one you want depends on your ticket and where you are meeting people. Being dropped at the wrong end of the site costs ten minutes on foot around a long wall.

  3. 03

Sloane Square is the nearest station and a great many visitors walk down from there, which puts a steady stream of people along Lower Sloane Street through the morning.

  4. 04

On the last afternoon the show sells its plants, and visitors leave carrying them. A car with a real boot is worth considerably more at four o clock on the final day than at any other point in the week.

04The hours

A The RHS Chelsea Flower Show day, from the driver's side

What the chauffeur is doing while you are inside, and why the timings are set where they are.
The morning
Early entry is quieter and the roads around Chelsea still work. A collection that puts you at the gate for opening is the easiest version of this day by a wide margin, particularly on the public days.
The drop
On whichever street is workable that morning, with a short walk to the gate on your ticket. Your chauffeur checks the barrier layout before setting off, because it is not the same on every day of the show.
Through the visit
Four to six hours is a normal visit, longer if you are eating there. The car clears the area and waits within ten minutes, which in this part of London means somewhere towards Battersea or Pimlico rather than round the corner.
Leaving
The exit is steady rather than sudden, except on the final afternoon when the plant sell-off empties the site with everyone carrying something. That is the one departure worth planning carefully.

The things that decide a The RHS Chelsea Flower Show day

A red route is a red route, show or no show

EV-01A red route is a red route, show or no show

A red route is a red route, show or no show

Chelsea Embankment and Royal Hospital Road do not relax their restrictions because there is an event on. If anything the enforcement is firmer, because the pavements are full and the traffic needs to keep moving.

So the car does not wait, and any driver who tells you otherwise is planning to collect a penalty. Set down, clear the area, return on call: it is the same discipline as Wimbledon, applied to a considerably more central postcode.

EV-02Which gate, and why it matters

Which gate, and why it matters

The site is large and enclosed by a long wall, so the difference between two entrances can be ten minutes on foot. Tickets specify an entrance in some cases, and parties meeting inside frequently discover they have come in at opposite ends.

We ask which gate before the day rather than at the junction. It takes a moment at the booking stage and saves a walk around the perimeter of the Royal Hospital in the sun.

The plant sell-off, and what it does to the boot

EV-03The plant sell-off, and what it does to the boot

The plant sell-off, and what it does to the boot

On the final afternoon the exhibitors sell their plants, and a great many visitors leave with more than they intended to carry. Trees in pots, trays of perennials, a shrub that seemed reasonable at the time.

A saloon boot holds a surprising amount if the plants are packed properly and the driver has thought about it. An MPV holds considerably more with the rear seats folded, and for anyone attending on the last day with intent, that is the vehicle to book.

Planning around The RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Members days and public days

EV-04Members days and public days

Members days and public days

The early days of the week are for RHS members and are noticeably quieter, both inside the show and on the roads outside it. The public days at the end are busier in every respect, and the difference in the surrounding streets is real.

Guests with a choice of day generally have a better time earlier in the week, and the car gets closer. It is the same pattern as every event on this site: the quiet day is the one where the ground logistics disappear.

Combining the show with lunch or an evening

EV-05Combining the show with lunch or an evening

Combining the show with lunch or an evening

Chelsea is surrounded by places to eat, and a great many visits turn into a longer day with lunch in Sloane Square or dinner afterwards. Because the car is already booked by the hour, adding that costs nothing beyond the time.

It also solves a small practical problem. Nobody wants to carry a tray of plants into a restaurant, and the boot is a considerably better place for them than a cloakroom.

08What it costs

Pricing a day at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show

A fixture like this is priced by the hour rather than as two transfers, because the useful part of the arrangement is the car being available in between. A day usually runs from the collection to the last drop, and the figure covers the whole of it rather than each leg separately.

The figures on your quotation on this page are the same ones on the pricing page, and they are a starting point rather than a quotation. Distance from your collection point, the size of the party and how long the day runs all move the number, which is why we put it in writing before anybody travels.

09Worth knowing

Small things that change a The RHS Chelsea Flower Show day

Coming in from outside London

EV-06Coming in from outside London

Coming in from outside London

A large share of Chelsea visitors travel in for the day from Surrey, Hampshire, Sussex and the Cotswolds, and for them the journey is a long drive followed by the hardest three hundred yards in London.

Being driven in removes the part that people find genuinely stressful, which is not the motorway but the arrival. From Guildford, Oxford or Tunbridge Wells the run in is an hour to ninety minutes, and the difference is entirely at the Chelsea end.

Accessibility and a long day on your feet

EV-07Accessibility and a long day on your feet

Accessibility and a long day on your feet

The show is a great deal of walking on temporary surfaces, and for anyone who finds that difficult, where the car stops matters more than usual. A drop as close to the correct gate as the restrictions allow can be the difference between a good day and an exhausting one.

Tell us at the booking stage if that applies. We will plan the set-down and the collection around it, and choose a vehicle that is easy to get into and out of rather than the one that looks best on the street.

14Answers

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show: what we are asked

The five questions that come up on nearly every enquiry for this fixture.

How close can a car get to the Chelsea Flower Show entrances?

Close enough for a two to five minute walk on most days, depending on where the barriers are that morning. Royal Hospital Road and the Embankment are red routes, so it is a set-down rather than a wait, and the exact street is chosen on the day rather than promised in advance.

Can the car take plants bought at the show?

Yes, and on the final afternoon that is half the reason people book one. A saloon boot takes a reasonable amount if the plants are packed sensibly. If you are attending the last day and intend to buy properly, book the V-Class and fold a row of seats down.

Which day of the show is easiest for traffic?

The earlier days in the week, which are quieter both inside and outside. By the final weekend the streets around the Royal Hospital carry a much heavier flow of people on foot, and the workable set-down points move further from the gates.

Does the chauffeur wait nearby during our visit?

Not immediately outside, because there is nowhere legal to do it. The car waits within about ten minutes of the show, typically towards Battersea or Pimlico, and returns when you call. In practice you wait no longer than you would for a car parked round a corner in a street that does not exist.

Is it worth being driven when the show is so central?

It depends where you are coming from. From within London it is a convenience. From Surrey, Sussex or further, it removes the two hardest parts of the day, which are parking anywhere near SW3 and carrying what you have bought back to wherever you left the car.
