Where does the chauffeur wait at Heathrow Terminal 5?

Inside the arrivals concourse, at the meeting point, holding a name board. The car is in the Terminal 5 short stay car park, which sits directly opposite the terminal and is reached on foot, so the walk out with your luggage is short and entirely under cover.

01The short answer

Inside the arrivals concourse, at the meeting point, holding a name board. The car is in the Terminal 5 short stay car park, which sits directly opposite the terminal and is reached on foot, so the walk out with your luggage is short and entirely under cover.

Terminal 5 is British Airways' base at Heathrow, which means the arrivals pattern is heavy in the early morning as the long-haul flights land together. That timing shapes how a T5 collection is planned more than anything about the building itself.

The geography of a T5 arrival

QA-01The geography of a T5 arrival

The geography of a T5 arrival

You come through immigration and baggage reclaim and emerge into the arrivals concourse on the lower level of the main terminal building. The chauffeur is standing where arriving passengers actually appear rather than at a general information desk on another floor.

From there the walk to the short stay car park is a matter of minutes on a level route. It is one of the better arrangements at Heathrow, and it is why a T5 meet feels quicker than the equivalent at some of the older terminals.

QA-02Why the chauffeur is not on the forecourt

Why the chauffeur is not on the forecourt

Heathrow's terminal forecourts are drop-off only, with a charge, and waiting is not permitted. A car cannot sit outside T5 until a passenger appears, so the choice is a car park meet or a call-when-outside arrangement from the designated pickup area.

That constraint is the whole reason meet and greet exists in the form it does. It is not a premium add-on invented by operators; it is the practical response to a terminal frontage that will not let a car stop for more than a few minutes.

  • Meet inside the arrivals concourse, at the meeting point
  • Car parked in the T5 short stay car park, opposite the terminal
  • Terminal forecourt is drop-off only, with a charge and no waiting
  • Kerbside collection uses the designated pickup area instead
  • Car park fee passed through at cost on the invoice

QA-03Departures from T5

Departures from T5

Going out is simpler. The car drops on the departures level, the chauffeur takes the bags to the trolleys or the door, and that is that. The drop-off charge applies and is passed through at cost.

Timing is the thing to get right. T5 has its own security and its own rhythm, and a long-haul departure at a busy hour wants more margin than the flight app suggests. We build the collection time backwards from the flight rather than from a rule of thumb.

QA-04If your flight arrives at a different terminal

If your flight arrives at a different terminal

It happens, particularly on codeshares and after a rebooking. Heathrow's terminals are far apart and not interchangeable, so tell us the terminal rather than the airline if you know it, and tell us the flight number if you do not.

Where a flight is diverted or moved, the chauffeur relocates rather than the booking failing. Terminal 3 and Terminal 5 are a genuine drive apart, so there may be a short delay while the car moves and reparks, and you will be told rather than left waiting.

04Answers

Follow-up questions

The things people ask straight after this one.

How long before landing does the chauffeur arrive at T5?

Around forty minutes ahead of the scheduled touchdown, parked and inside the building before you clear immigration. On an early morning bank of long-haul arrivals it is earlier still, because the immigration hall can move faster than the queue would suggest.

Can I be collected from the T5 designated pickup area instead?

Yes, and it avoids the car park fee. You call or message the chauffeur once you are through with your bags, and the car comes to the pickup area. It works best for passengers who know the terminal and are travelling light.

What if I am flying into Heathrow from Dublin or another preclearance route?

Some arrivals route differently and emerge into a different part of the building. Tell us the flight number and the arrangement is set accordingly. Where there is any doubt, the chauffeur will confirm the exact meeting point in the message sent the day before.
