Is there wifi in a chauffeur car?

It can usually be arranged if you ask at the booking stage, but the honest constraint is the mobile network rather than the vehicle. Onboard connectivity is only ever as good as the signal outside, and British motorways have long stretches where there is very little of it.

01The short answer

It can usually be arranged if you ask at the booking stage, but the honest constraint is the mobile network rather than the vehicle. Onboard connectivity is only ever as good as the signal outside, and British motorways have long stretches where there is very little of it.

That is worth saying plainly, because a promise of wifi implies a reliability nobody driving between London and Leeds can offer. What a car can genuinely give you is quiet, power and time, and those are the things that make a working journey work.

What connectivity actually looks like

QA-01What connectivity actually looks like

What connectivity actually looks like

A mobile hotspot in the vehicle, which behaves exactly as your own phone does in the same place. Where there is coverage it is perfectly usable for email, documents and calls. Where there is not, it drops out in the same way and for the same reason.

Your own phone as a hotspot is often just as good and sometimes better, since it may be on a different network. On a long run, having two networks in the car between you is the closest thing to a reliable connection that exists.

  • Ask at the booking stage rather than on the day
  • Coverage, not the car, is the limiting factor
  • Power at the rear seat on the larger vehicles
  • Download anything essential before you set off
  • Two networks in the car beats one, on any long route

QA-02Where coverage fails on the main routes

Where coverage fails on the main routes

The usual places: cuttings and tunnels, the Chilterns on the M40, stretches of the M6 through the north-west hills, and almost anything in the Highlands north of Perth. None of that is new, and none of it is going to be solved by an aerial on a car.

Journey planning helps more than equipment. A call scheduled for the first hour out of London is far more likely to survive than one scheduled for the middle of a Pennine crossing, and the chauffeur can tell you which is which.

QA-03What is genuinely reliable in the car

What is genuinely reliable in the car

Power, quiet and space. An S-Class or a BMW i7 gives you a rear compartment you can work in for three hours without your back complaining, and cabin noise low enough that a call sounds like an office.

The chauffeur is the other reliable component. No conversation unless you start one, no radio unless you ask, and a route chosen to keep the ride smooth when you are typing rather than to shave two minutes off the arrival.

QA-04For a journey that depends on being online

For a journey that depends on being online

Say so when you book. Where a passenger genuinely has to hold a call for the whole run, the route can be planned around coverage rather than purely around speed, and the chauffeur will flag the dead stretches before you reach them.

For anything truly critical, a stop is more reliable than a moving car. Ten minutes at a service area with a stable connection beats forty minutes of a call breaking up, and on an hourly booking it costs nothing extra.

Follow-up questions

The things people ask straight after this one.

Can I stream video on a long journey?

Sometimes, and not dependably. Streaming is the first thing to fail when a signal thins, so on a long run it is better to download beforehand. For children on a four hour drive, downloaded content is the difference between a calm car and a fraught one.

Is there a charge for onboard connectivity?

Where it can be provided it is part of the booking rather than a separate line. What we will not do is charge for something that then fails to work in a cutting on the M40, which is why it is described as available rather than guaranteed.

Do the cars have charging points for laptops?

The larger vehicles have power at the rear seat, and it is worth confirming the connector you need at the booking stage. Bringing your own adapter is the safest approach, since sockets differ between models and a flat laptop is a wasted journey.
