01The short answer

In the arrivals hall of the single terminal, with a name board and the car in the adjacent short stay car park. Birmingham is one terminal with one arrivals route, so there is no hall to choose and the walk out with luggage is short.

The airport sits beside the M42 on the eastern edge of the city, next to the National Exhibition Centre and its own railway station. That position makes it the natural gateway for the whole of the Midlands rather than just for Birmingham.

The meet, and getting to the car

QA-01The meet, and getting to the car

The meet, and getting to the car

The chauffeur is in the hall before you land, having tracked the flight from departure. The short stay car park sits close to the terminal, so the walk is a matter of minutes and largely sheltered, which is more than can be said for some larger airports.

Kerbside collection is available from the designated pickup area and avoids the car park fee. The forecourt itself is drop-off only with a charge, as at every major UK airport.

  • One terminal, one arrivals hall, no exit to choose
  • Short stay car park close to the building
  • Adjacent to the NEC and its own railway station
  • Sits on the M42, so the Midlands is quickly reachable
  • Same national hourly card as everywhere else we drive

QA-02Where Birmingham transfers go

Where Birmingham transfers go

Into the city and out across Solihull, Coventry, Warwick and Leamington, up to Stratford-upon-Avon, and out to the Cotswolds. The motorway network around the airport is dense, which makes a very wide catchment realistic.

The NEC next door generates its own pattern entirely: conference and exhibition traffic, often several cars at once, moving between the halls and the hotels. Those are booked as group movements rather than individual transfers.

QA-03Birmingham to London by road

Birmingham to London by road

Around two hours on the M40 in reasonable conditions, and longer at either end of a weekday. It is one of the more predictable intercity runs in England, which is why it is quoted against the route rather than by the hour.

It also makes Birmingham a genuine alternative arrival airport for anyone whose final destination is in the Midlands or the Cotswolds. A flight into Birmingham and a car from there frequently beats Heathrow and a two hour drive north.

QA-04Notice and positioning

Notice and positioning

Birmingham needs a little more notice than a London booking at short notice, because the density of available cars is lower. A day or two is comfortable for a standard transfer; a specific vehicle wants longer.

For a run that starts at the airport and ends a long way off, or the reverse, tell us as early as the date is known. Positioning a car overnight is straightforward when it is planned and awkward when it is not.

04Answers

Follow-up questions

The things people ask straight after this one.

Do you cover the NEC as well as the airport?

Yes, and the two are usually booked together. Exhibition and conference work at the NEC often involves several vehicles moving between the halls and the surrounding hotels, and that runs as an hourly arrangement rather than as separate transfers.

Is Birmingham a sensible airport for a Cotswolds destination?

Frequently better than a London airport. The drive south-west from the M42 is straightforward and considerably shorter than coming up from Heathrow. For anywhere north of Cirencester it is usually the better arrival point.

How far in advance should I book a Birmingham collection?

A couple of days for a standard transfer, and longer around the big NEC events, which pull cars out of the region for whole days. If your arrival falls on a major exhibition date, book as soon as the flight is ticketed.
