The 05:40 arrival, and how to make it survivable

What is open, what is not, how the border behaves at that hour, and the hotel that will not give you a room until three in the afternoon. The overnight arrival is its own category of travel misery and it has almost nothing to do with the flight. You have slept badly for five hours, you land at twenty to six, and the airport is at its emptiest and least helpful. Nothing is open, the border is running on a skeleton, and whatever you were planning to do next almost certainly cannot be done for another nine hours. The compensations are real, though, and worth planning around. The roads are empty, the drive into London takes half what it would at nine, and a chauffeur collecting a 05:40 arrival can have you at a door in the West End before the traffic starts. Getting the most out of a dawn landing is a matter of arranging the next few hours rather than the transfer itself.

01The short version

The 05:40 arrival, and how to make it survivable

What the border is like at five in the morning

GD-01What the border is like at five in the morning

What the border is like at five in the morning

The long-haul arrivals bank at Heathrow builds through the early morning, and the terminals go from empty to extremely busy in about forty minutes. Land at 05:10 and you may walk straight through with nobody in front of you. Land at 06:20 into the middle of the bank and the staffed desks can be twenty-five minutes deep, because the number of officers on duty at that hour was set before anybody knew how many aircraft would be early.

E-gate banks are also not always fully open at that time. It is a small thing with a real effect: a passenger who expects to walk through in three minutes and finds four of twelve gates operating has lost fifteen. The overall effect is that early arrivals are more variable than mid-morning ones, not less, which is the opposite of what most people assume.

GD-02What is actually open in the terminal

What is actually open in the terminal

Less than you would like. Arrivals-side catering at most UK terminals starts opening from around five, but the choice at half past five is a coffee and something wrapped in plastic. Car hire desks, currency counters and information desks frequently do not open until six or later, and at regional airports later still.

What this means practically is that the terminal is a poor place to wait. If your onward plan involves waiting for something to open, do the waiting somewhere else. A car that takes you to a hotel lobby with a decent breakfast at half past six is a considerably better proposition than three hours on an arrivals-hall bench, and it costs less than most people expect.

GD-03The roads are the compensation

The roads are the compensation

This is the genuine upside. Heathrow to central London between five and half past six is thirty to forty minutes, against an hour and ten in the morning peak. Gatwick to the City at six is an hour and ten rather than two hours. Manchester Airport to the centre is twenty minutes. Every drive is at its best at exactly the hour you have landed.

It also means an onward long-distance leg is worth doing rather than postponing. A 05:40 landing at Heathrow with a run to Birmingham puts you there by half past eight with the M40 empty, which is a journey that would take three hours later in the day. If your day has a fixed start somewhere else in the country, the dawn arrival is the one that makes it possible.

  • Heathrow to central London: thirty to forty minutes at that hour
  • Gatwick to the City: about an hour and ten
  • The M40, M1 and M4 are all clear until roughly 06:30
  • A long onward drive is quicker at dawn than at any other time
The hotel problem

GD-04The hotel problem

The hotel problem

Standard check-in at most hotels is between two and three in the afternoon, and arriving at seven in the morning does not change that. Some will hold your bags, some will let you into a lounge, and a few will release a room early if it happens to be free, but none of them can promise it. Planning a dawn arrival around an early check-in is planning around a favour.

There are three fixes. Book the room for the previous night, which guarantees it is yours when you walk in and costs a night. Book a day room somewhere near the airport, use it for a shower and a few hours, and travel on later. Or accept the morning as it is, have breakfast somewhere decent, and let the car take you to whatever you actually came for. All three are better than sitting in a lobby.

GD-05When a dawn arrival is the wrong flight to book

When a dawn arrival is the wrong flight to book

If your reason for the overnight service is a morning meeting, think about it again. Landing at 05:40 and going straight into something at nine sounds efficient and works badly: you have had five hours of poor sleep, no shower, and a cabin bag full of yesterday. The version that works is landing the evening before, and where the fare difference is small it is the better purchase.

The second case is a family arrival. A dawn landing with young children produces a day that nobody enjoys, because the children will sleep in the car and then be awake at two in the afternoon when the adults have collapsed. Where there is a choice, an afternoon arrival is worth paying for with children in the party.

The third is any itinerary with a tight onward connection. Early arrivals are more variable than mid-morning ones because of the staffing pattern at the border, so an itinerary that depends on being out in twenty minutes is more fragile at dawn than at noon.

What we do differently at that hour

GD-06What we do differently at that hour

What we do differently at that hour

The car is warm before you get into it, which sounds trivial and is not, in January at half past five. There is water in the door and the cabin is set for someone who has been in a dry aircraft for nine hours rather than for the chauffeur who has been driving for forty minutes. If you want to sleep, say so at the door and nobody will talk to you for the next hour.

The chauffeur will also have checked whether the far end is awake. A residential address at half past six is a doorbell nobody wants rung twice, and a hotel where the night porter has to be found takes five minutes that are better spent before you arrive than after. Where the destination is a private house, we would rather know whether to help with the cases to the door or leave them on the step.

  • Cabin warm on arrival, water in the car
  • Say if you would rather not be talked to
  • The chauffeur checks the far end is reachable before arriving
  • A quiet drive at that hour is genuinely the best of the day

GD-07One useful trick for the wasted morning

One useful trick for the wasted morning

If you land at dawn with nowhere to be until the afternoon, the most useful thing a car can do is not take you anywhere in particular. Hourly hire from the airport, taken as a block rather than as a transfer, gives you the luggage in the boot, a breakfast somewhere better than a terminal, and a stop at a house or an office before the room is ready. It costs more than a straight transfer and it turns a dead morning into a usable one.

The alternative that people underuse is going somewhere pleasant instead of somewhere convenient. Windsor at half past seven on a summer morning, or a walk by the river before the day starts, is a considerably better use of two hours than a hotel lobby, and the car is already paid for either way.

06Answers

Questions this guide gets asked

The same answers we would give on the phone, written down.

Are early morning arrivals quicker to clear than daytime ones?

Not reliably. Between five and half past six the long-haul bank builds quickly at Heathrow, and border staffing is set in advance rather than adjusted for early arrivals. Landing at 05:10 you may walk straight through; landing at 06:20 you may queue for twenty-five minutes. Early arrivals are more variable, not less.

How long is the drive into London at six in the morning?

From Heathrow, thirty to forty minutes to a central address, against an hour and ten in the morning peak. From Gatwick, about an hour and ten. The roads stay clear until roughly half past six, after which the difference disappears quickly. It is the single genuine advantage of a dawn arrival.

What can I do about a hotel that will not check me in until three?

Three options: book the previous night so the room is already yours, take a day room near the airport for a shower and a few hours, or spend the morning doing something useful and check in later. A car booked by the hour, from four hours, covers the third version with your luggage staying in the boot.

Will the chauffeur mind if I sleep in the car?

Not remotely, and most passengers on a dawn arrival do. Say so at the door and the conversation stops there. The cabin will be warm rather than cool, there is water in the car, and a run into London at that hour is quiet enough to sleep through properly.
